Louis L. Kiraly March 04, 1926 - April 02, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Bell Funeral Home Louis L. Kiraly passed away on April 2, 2005 at the age of 79 years. Lovingly remembered by his son Edward and his daughter-in-law Ildiko-Andrea and his grandson Christopher (all living in Austria); his sisters, Anne of Burnaby and Mariska of Slovenia; brothers Pisti (Etel) of France and Frank of Burnaby; nephews, Joey (Gina) and Frank Jr., and his cousin Joe. Fondly remembered by his many extended family and friends including great-nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his mother Mary, father Victor and brother-in-law Johnny. Louis, came to Canada in 1952 lived in Hamilton, Toronto, and eventually settled in British Columbia in 1955 working in the aluminium and later pulp and paper industry. He was a founding Partner in Lifestream, a bakery and health food concern in Richmond up until 1989, after which he dedicated his time pursuing his many passions and projects including nutrition and an advocate of organic and sustainable food ideals and principles. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, April 11th at 11:00 am from Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 525 S. Slocan Street, Vancouver. Frs. of St. Charles Celebrants. Georgina Kitchen June 19, 1920 - April 03, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Chapel Lawn Funeral Home Following courageous battles of many surgeries and illnesses over the years, mom passed away on April 3, 2005 at the age of 84. She was an amazing woman who never gave up. She came back from the edge of death time after time because of the power of prayer and her determination to live. She is survived by those who loved her dearly; Clint, her husband of 62 years; daughter Merilyn Kemp (Dayton); sons, James Kitchen (Linda), Omer Kitchen (Brenda); grandchildren, Steven, Bruce, David (Carol), Chris (Rhonda), Bryan, Jonathan, Janice and Jamie; great grandchildren, Zachary, Nathan, Naomi and Julia. Mom and dad met and fell in love during World War II. She lived on Kitson Street in Norwood for almost all her life until she and her husband, Clint, retired. They spent many retirement summers at their hobby farm “The Willows” and their winters in Florida. Mom was an organized person who enjoyed crafts, painting, and shopping with friends. She loved animals and nature. Mom had the gift of communication, conversation, and unconditional love for everyone who crossed her path. She was long suffering and a sweet, gracious lady. Thank you God for answering our prayers and letting our mother recover so many times so we could have more time with her. We will all miss her so much. The family thanks the nurses and staff of Charleswood Care Center, for their special care during this difficult week, and for their continued care of our dad; and thanks to Dr. Phillip Erhard for his excellent care over the years. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 7 at 1:00 p.m. at Bethesda Church, 1350 Grant Avenue with a reception to follow. SAFE IN THE ARMS OF JESUS TILL WE MEET AGAIN.

Viana M. Soulier, 81, of Cloquet, died Saturday, May 7, 2005 at Chris Jensen Health Center in Duluth. She was born Dec. 22, 1923 in Cloquet to George W. and Blanche A. (Poirer) Bayless and grew up in Chisholm, Minn. Viana graduated from Chisholm High School and moved back to Cloquet in 1966. She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Cloquet. Viana was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Janice Port. She is survived by one son, Gary Soulier of Watertown, N.Y.; one granddaughter, Heather Linke of Jacksonville, Fla. and two grandchildren, Zachary and Xander. Donald Joseph Bergeron Sr., 76, a native of Theriot and resident of Houma, died at 10:09 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2005. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to funeral time Monday at St. Gregory Catholic Church. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, with burial in St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Lirette Bergeron of Houma; one son, Donald Bergeron Jr. and wife, Faye, of Houma; two daughters, Stephanie B. Breaux and husband, Kermit, of Houma and Melanie B. Clark and husband, Merlin, of Lafayette; one sister-in-law, Shirley Eschete and husband, Donald; and four grandchildren, Kyle Breaux, Erin Breaux Detiveaux, Shelley Bergeron and Allison Bergeron. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester Bergeron Sr. and Nettie Bergeron; three brothers, Lester, Raymond and Henry Bergeron; and three sisters, Lydia LeCompte, Eula Mae Blanchard and Hazel Bonvillain. NEW BEDFORD -- Marie (Bouchard) Piche, 92, of Melville Towers died Saturday, May 7, 2005, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. She was the widow of Raymond A. Piche. A lifelong resident of New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Fabiola (Moreau) Bouchard. She was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church. She was a weaver in the textile industry until she retired in 1968. Mrs. Piche enjoyed knitting, baking, reading and being with her family, especially her great-grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter, Jeanne P. Nealon, and her husband, J. Timothy Nealon, of West Dennis; a daughter-in-law, Gail Piche; a brother, Ernest Bouchard of New Bedford; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Raymond E. Piche, and the sister of the late Armand Bouchard and Eugene Bouchard. Her funeral Mass will be at 10:15 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Germaine (Caron) Breton, 93, of Manchester, wife of the late Louis P. Breton died on Friday (May 6, 2005) at Manchester Manor. Born in Quebec, Canada August 8, 1911, she had lived in Manchester since 1980. She is survived by her children, Theresa Beauregard and her husband Normand of Vernon, Irene Lehan of Eastham, MA, Roger Breton and his wife Jean of Port Angelius, Washington, and Patricia Hight of Manchester; 26 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Wilfred Caron of Canada and Elisie Parent also of Canada. Vincent C. Chasse, 67, Sarasota, died May 5, 2005.He was born July 25, 1937, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and came to Sarasota in 1979 from Fort Lauderdale. He was a lithographer in New York and Florida, and was in the Marine Reserves. TROY, NY -- Irene M. Telesky, 81, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 5, 2005 with her loving family by her side. Born in Manchester, N.H., Irene was the daughter of the late Celia Martel and Armand Derocher. She resided in Troy most of her life and attended Troy Schools. She was the beloved wife of Philip Telesky for 61 years. Irene worked for W.T. Grant Company for many years and retired at the age of 78 from the Y.W.C.A. Daycare Center as assistant teacher in 2002. She was such a loving, caring person and touched the hearts of all that knew her. She was the beloved mother of Philip J. Telesky Jr. of Troy and Lorraine Cordi of Poestenkill; mother-in-law of Joseph Cordi. Preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Michael Cordi. She was cherished grandmother of Gina Milanese (Joseph) of Wynantskill, and proud great-grandmother of Joseph and Daniel. Special sister-in-law of Mary Derocher. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Grace Ray, Emily Newton, Evon Martin, Lucille Downey, Leonard Derocher, Theresa Quevillon and Leo Derocher. FALL RIVER -- Beatrice (Dupuis) Almeida, 96, of Amity Street, formerly of Third Street, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Southpointe Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow William E. Almeida. Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Leon Dupuis and Magdalena (Latromoille) Dupuis Lemieux. She lived in Fall River most of her life. She was a retired garment worker and a member of the former International Ladies Garment Workers Union, now UNITE, and the Niagara and National Association of Retired Federal Employees senior citizens club. Survivors include a sister, Dorothy O. Joy of Fall River; and several nephews and nieces. She was the sister of the late Edgar Dupuis and Albert Dupuis. She will be cremated. She was the wife of the late Hilaire Motard and Eusebe Turgeon.She was born in Fall River, on June 22, 1917, daughter of the late Jean and Flora (Morin) Gaudreau.Before retiring, Mrs. Turgeon was employed as an assembler at the former Symphonics Co. in Lowell. LOWELL -- Rita C. (Lessieur) McManus, 80, a longtime Lowell resident and retired hairdresser at Tewksbury Hospital, died Thursday, May 5, at Lowell General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Raymond McManus.She was born in Lowell, on May 12, 1924, daughter of the late Joseph and Alvine (Sirois) Lessieur. She attended St. Patrick Grammar School and St. Patrick High School. She later graduated from Solari Hairdressing Academy.Before retiring, Mrs. McManus was a hairdresser for more than 15 years at Tewksbury Hospital. She was also a member of the Association of State, County and Municipal Employees of Massachusetts.She was a communicant of St. Patrick Church in Lowell, where she was a member of the Blessed Virgin Sodality. Dolbec and his wife Joyce of North Smithfield also three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She leaves one sister, Antoinette Maurice of Woonsocket. PITTSFIELD -- Laura Sue Douglass, 58, of 36 Andover St. died Sunday at home after a brief illness. Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 17, 1946, daughter of Richard E. and Leila Marcotte of Pittsfield, she was a 1964 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She had recently returned to the area after living in the state of Florida. Ms. Douglass had been employed as a real estate agent in Longwood, Fla., for 13 years. She had earlier worked as an investment broker in Massachusetts. She enjoyed the theater and was active in the Town Players for many years. She also enjoyed interior decorating and was an avid reader. Besides her parents, she leaves two sisters, Pat Marcotte of Beverly and Deborah Hines of Pittsfield. Her son, Scott K. Douglass, died in 1996. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Laura Douglas, who died May 7, 2005, will be conducted Tuesday, May 10, at First Baptist Church in Pittsfield by the Rev. Rosemarie A. Boucher SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Rosemarie A. Boucher of Second Street, Saratoga Springs, died after a short battle with cancer. She was 63. Born on Feb. 5, 1942, in Schuylerville, she was the daughter of the late Frank Natale and Mary Farrell Natale.Rosemarie married her husband, Joseph Boucher, on Oct. 15, 1960. She worked for many years as a social worker and home health aid with organizations such as the Wilton Developmental Center, the Clifton Park AIM and the Saratoga ARC. Mrs. Boucher loved working with and devoted her life to working with the mentally and physically handicapped.She was a member of the Soul Saving Station for Every Nation in Saratoga Springs for more than 20 years, and Rosemarie was a born again Christian and was a strong woman of faith and prayer. She loved the Lord, her children and the special needs individuals she worked with, and often included them in family functions and church events. She loved animals, in particular her dogs. Most of all, Rosemarie loved her grandchildren; she was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be missed dearly by her family and friends. In addition to residing in Saratoga Springs, Rosemarie spent many happy years in San Diego with her husband and daughters. Upon returning to Saratoga Springs, Rosemarie worked in the missionary program with Soul Saving Station, bringing people to the Lord. She was involved in the Sunday school program and was a member of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews.She is survived by her ex-husband Joseph; three daughters, Michelle Hill, Sheri Lofits and Renee Ferguson, all of Saratoga Springs; two brothers, Anthony Natale of Georgetown, Mass., and William Natale of Saratoga Springs; seven grandchildren, Nicole Hill, Adam Hill, Cody Joe Loftis, Waylon Loftis, Liza Boucher Ferguson, Cormac John Christopher Ferguson and Cole Emery Kane Ferguson; and nieces, nephews and cousins.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday May 11, 2005, at Soul Saving Station for Every Nation at 62 Henry St., Saratoga Springs. OGUNQUIT - John Laurent, one of Maine's great painters, died recently at the age of 83.Mr. Laurent was born on Nov. 27, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of noted American sculptor, Robert Laurent who joined with Hamilton Easter Field as founders of an important summer art colony in Ogunquit. This association was to have a major impact on the future of both LaurentsJohn Laurent grew up surrounded by great art and great artists. A number of America's leading artists were visitors to the Laurent home, including Alexander Calder, Bernard Karfiol, Walt Kuhn, Gaston Lachaise, David Smith and William Zorach.After attending Syracuse University for two years, John Laurent joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. Upon his return home he completed his undergraduate studies at Syracuse and earned a master's degree at Indiana University He also studied at L' Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris.It was at this point in his life that Laurent was able to establish an important student/master relationship with an artist he admired greatly, Walt Kuhn. A grant from the National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities enabled him to spend a year in Prat-Ar-Coum and connect with his family roots in France. He made several trips there and Brittany would often provide subjects for his paintings.In the '50s, John Laurent laid the groundwork that would frame his life as an artist for years to come. He accepted a position teaching in the art department at the University of New Hampshire in 1954 and later joined the highly regarded Kraushaar Gallery in New York City. He taught at UNH for 30 years and, after a very successful relationship with Kraushaar, he left there in 1969 to focus his efforts on his primary goal. Laurent often characterized that as becoming a 'good Maine painter.'It has been observed that Laurent soaked up all that was great about American art at a truly rare moment. He admired many of the great masters but felt that what was happening in this country at the time his own vision began to sharpen was what was really exciting. He was aware of the energy of New York in the '50s, but like his great peer, William Kienbusch, he had to get away from New York to find an imagery that would be unique, strong and fresh. They both found what they needed in Maine. It's hard to choose between them as each made an enormous contribution to the substantial reservoir of great American art.Laurent picked up where Kuhn and Hartley left off. He had an amazing range of style and subject and about the only thing he did not feature often in his work was the human figure. He explored the entire range of possibilities with regard to landscape, still-life and abstract paintings. Without question, he brought to Maine painting a new level of a combination of vision and craft. While often pursuing strong, bold forms similar to those found in the work of Richard Diebenkorn and Franz Kline, he would at the same time, offer us delicious passages of pure paint not unlike Wayne Thiebaud. And then, just when it appeared he had emptied his quiver (he was a Sagittarius), he would offer up a wonderful little, precise, almost photo-realistic painting of some fishing gear or the fish themselves. Among the truly great Maine artists of the second half of the twentieth century, it is hard to choose between Neil Welliver, Andrew Wyeth, William Kienbusch and John Laurent as to who accomplished more.Laurent had two activities that he was serious about in addition to his art. He was a very good jazz musician and played with a small group for many years. He also enjoyed fishing, especially fly-fishing which often found him in the great rivers of Maine and New Brunswick. These activities were the basis of many of the strong, very special forms that are unique to Laurent's work. He was also a consummate gardener, and his farm in York with his vegetable garden and various fowl afoot also became elements of those same great John Laurent forms.In 1976, noted Maine art critic Philip Isaacson, in a revue of an exhibition of Laurent's work published in the Maine Sunday Telegram, wrote, 'I have very little hesitation in stating that he is our strongest resident painter.' He added, 'I still consider him the only heir to Hartley's imagery.'John Laurent is survived by two sons, Brehon Laurent of New York City and Bret Laurent of Baltimore, Md.There will be a tribute to John Laurent at the Ogunquit Art Association's September Exhibition and plans are under development for a summer memorial in Ogunquit.

Graham Paul Kitchener July 08, 1921 - April 22, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Sands Funeral Chapel (Duncan) Graham Paul passed away on April 22, 2005 in Cowichan Hospital after a lengthy battle with C.O.P.D. Born July 8, 1921 in Carcroft, England to Henry and Florence Kitchener, he was the youngest of 3 siblings, Dorothy, Gordon and Stanley. The family moved to Nelson, BC when he was a boy. He later joined the R.C.A.F. and earned the nickname “Canso Sam”. He described his military career as marvelous and always had many stories to tell of his flying escapades. He married Mary Joyce Robson on October 23, 1954 in Ottawa, Ontario. They had 3 daughters, Carol Anne, Janet and Lynne. Sadly Janet died of leukemia when she was just 5. Paul did a tour of duty in Germany, then returned to finish his service at Uplands in Ottawa. He retired in 1971 and moved to Chemainus where he has resided since. Joy died suddenly of heart complications in March 1999. He was an artistic individual who spent countless hours carving and creating intricate and detailed works – gun powder horns, masks, knives, guns, metal jewelry and furniture. He loved animals and would stop while mowing the lawn to move a frog or snake out of harms way. He also loved cats, all of which he named Tigger. But most of all he loved to laugh. We will all miss his quick wit, funny stories, silly songs and uncanny ability to mimic. The special friendship that Paul shared with Elizabeth Martindale immensely enhanced his last few years and for that the family wishes to convey their heartfelt appreciation. He was also very fond of the women at Pioneers Video as well as the serving staff at the Haidaway Restaurant, especially Elsie with her squishees. Thank you Derek for being such a loyal friend until the end. As his disease progressed, people around him marveled at how good natured he remained. He liked to think that he “fought the good fight” and so did his daughters, Lynne and Carol. A celebration of Dad’s life will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chemainus Legion.

Foster Edward Bateman January 05, 1923 - May 07, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home Well known Windsor businessman, Foster Edward Bateman, age 82, of Falmouth, Hants County, passed away on Saturday, May 7th, 2005, at the Q.E. II, New Halifax Infirmary, after a short illness. Born on January 5th, 1923, in Halifax, he was the only son of the late James E. and Jessie (Moir) Bateman. Receiving his early education in Halifax, he then enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, serving overseas during the Second World War. After completion of the war, he returned to Halifax, attending and graduating from Dalhousie University, with a degree in pharmacy. Moving to Windsor, he became owner/operator of Bateman’s Drug Store, for over 20 years, retiring in 1975. He then spent his time boating and golfing in Florida, Prince Edward Island and returning to his Falmouth home. Foster was former President of the N.S. Pharmaceutical Society (64-66). Foster held numerous positions and was a life long member of both the Nova Scotia Provincial and the Federal Progressive Conservative Party. He was instrumental in the creation of the new Hants Community Hospital, where he was a former chairman and board member. He was also active board member of the Hants County Family & Children’s Services. Foster received the A. H. Robins Award, “Bowl of Hygea” for community service. He was a member of Hants County Branch 009, Royal Canadian Legion, Welsford Masonic Lodge #26, AF & AM, and the Philae Temple and also the Windsor GYRO Club. He was one of the founders and a member for over 20 years, of the Senators Coffee Club. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Norma Gertrude Etter; his daughter, Janice (David) Keith, Brooklyn; his only grandson, Colin, Ottawa, Ont. Cremation has taken place. Hants County Branch 009, will hold a Legion service, 6:30 p.m. and where Welsford Lodge #26, will hold Masonic service at 6:45 p.m. both on Tuesday, May 10, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor, followed by visitation, where the family will receive relatives and friends, from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. She will be sadly missed by her husband Jack of 56 years, sister and best friend Helen, brother Fred (Edith), and by her children; Bill (Eileen), Kirk (Barb), Kim (Conrad), Marc (Charlene). She will also be missed by her grandchildren; Elaine, Sheri, Kelly, Melanie, Randy, Cory, Clayton, Ryan, Troy, Eric, Luke, Calise, Taleah and Jager Jack, and her great-grandchildren; Dominique, Christina, and Annie as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Yvette will also be missed by the many children she fostered over the years, especially Kathy, Gerald and Richard. Yvette was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aries 23, cooking Thursday night suppers for many years. Yvette was also involved at the Centennial Seniors Centre where she enjoyed lawn bowling and interacting with the other members. Yvette was also a member of the Golden Eagle Rod and Gun Club where she spent many summers with her family and friends. Yvette did not walk quietly through life; she left a deep impression on all who met her. Yvette was well spoken and her humorous and exhilarating personality will be remembered by all who knew her.
