WINSLOW -- Alma P. Merrill, 94, of Dixon Terrace died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Oak Grove Living and Rehabilitation Center in Waterville.She was born in Anson on July 23, 1910, the daughter of Charles and Felixina (Grenier) Pomerleau. After high school, Mrs. Merrill enrolled and was educated at Peter Bent Brigham (now Brigham & Women's) Hospital in Boston and became a registered nurse. She later enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps and trained at Camp Shelby, Miss. She served in World War II as 2nd and 1st lieutenant in the British and French European theaters from 1941-46. She also served in field hospitals during the Battle of the Bulge. She served one more year of active duty during the Korean Conflict from April 1951 to September 1952.After the service, she married retired Lt. Col. Robert Venerable in Hawaii, then moved to California and adopted a newborn son. Mr. Venerable died in 1957, then Alma returned to her native Maine and remarried to Dwight Merrill of Madison. They were married 23 years before his sudden death in 1983. Mrs. Merrill continued to find joy in shell crafts and activities such as modeling clothes, cooking and recipes, and relaxing with crossword puzzles. She also traveled twice within the last 10 years of her life to Atlantic City, N.J., and to the Holy Lands of Jerusalem in Israel and Egypt. She was a member of the Madison-Anson Garden Club. She also delivered meals on wheels many times.She was also predeceased by her parents and two sisters, Madora Pomerleau Tyks in 1972 and Leola Pomerleau Eno in 1989.She is survived by her son, Mark Merrill and wife, Mary, of Winslow; grandchildren Justin Merrill of Orono and Michol Lynn Merrill of Winslow; two nephews, Stanley Tyks of San Francisco and Stephen Tyks of Skowhegan; two nieces, Carolyn Tyks of San Antonio and Sonya Eno Clothier of Skowhegan and several other nieces, cousins, and relatives in northern New England.Friends may call at 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service on Thursday, Feb. 3, at Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville, with Deacon Dean Lachance officiating. Committal prayers and burial will follow at 1 p.m. in the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.

Richard Leon Bonin Jr. of Attleboro, a truck driver, died Thursday at Miriam Hospital in Providence. He was 47. Born in Medford, Mr. Bonin was raised and educated in Attleboro, graduating from Attleboro High School. He was an independent truck driver for the past five years, previously working as an auto mechanic. A one-time student of the ministry, Mr. Bonin enjoyed motorcycling and horseback riding. He is survived by his former wife, Karen (Weir) Palmer of Attleboro; three sons, James M. of Fort Benning, Ga., Luke E. of Fort Lewis, Wash., and Brendon of Rayne, La.; a daughter, Sarah of Smyrna, Ga., his parents, Richard L. Sr. and Carole A. (Freeman), both of Attleboro; three brothers, Michael E., Timothy J. and Thomas J. Mendes, all of Attleboro; three sisters, Sandra E. of South Attleboro, Brenda L. Wilkinson of West Virginia and Kathleen M. St. Pierre of Attleboro; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held yesterday at Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, Attleboro Falls. Burial was in North Purchase Cemetery, Attleboro.

FALL RIVER -- Charles Alexander Bouvier, 93, of Old Stafford Road, Tiverton, R.I., died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at St. Anne's Hospital after a long illness. He was the widower of Elizabeth Hallem Bouvier and Albina Delisle Bouvier. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Alexander and Emma (Tessier) Bouvier. Mr. Bouvier was the former owner and operator of Charlie's Spa in East Providence, and was employed by Fall River Floor Surfacing. After retirement, he was employed as a janitor at Aetna Insurance. He was an avid gardener and accomplished woodworker and enjoyed fishing into his 91st year. He was also a former member of the East Tiverton Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include a son, Michael Bouvier, and his wife, Arlene, of Fairhaven; a daughter, Noreen James of Parma, Ohio; three stepdaughers, Shirley Arruda of Tiverton, Lorraine Fritzler of Washington, Donna Nickerson of Fall River; four stepsons, James, Edward and Gerald Reed, all of Tiverton, and Leslie Reed of Vermont; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild; and several step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, and step-great-great grandchildren. His private funeral arrangements are by A.F. Almeida & Son Funeral Home, 1309 Globe St., Fall River.

Timothy R. Dumas, Jr., 55, of Springfield, MA, died Monday, (January 24, 2005) at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA. Born on April 1, 1949 son of Timothy R. Dumas, Sr., and Miriam (Littmon) Dumas of Windsor, he had lived in Springfield for the last 28 years. Tim was a Veteran of the Vietnam War and served in the United States Marine Corps where he was awarded the Purple Heart. Besides his parents he leaves four sisters, Delphine Leibowitz of Oakland, CA, Deborah Dumas of New York, NY, Dawn Dumas of Windsor and Denise Dumas of Windsor Locks and many nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives residing in the Hartford area, Georgia and New York. FAIRHAVEN -- Aline (Martel) Boisclair, 92, of Fairhaven died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at Our Lady's Haven. She was the widow of Aurele Boisclair. Born in Acushnet, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Rose Alba (Foisy) Martel. She lived most of her life in Acushnet and Somerset prior to living in Fairhaven the past six years. She was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Acushnet. Mrs. Boisclair was formerly employed by Acushnet Company, Titleist Golf Division as a stamper. Survivors include her two daughters, Theresa M. Fagundes of Acushnet, and Phyllis Gendron of Somerset; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Raymond Martel of Dartmouth, and Robert Martel of California; and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Robert Lagasse and sister of the late Larry Martel and Roger Martel. Her funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday in St. Francis Xavier Church. She was the beloved wife of John F. "Socks" Murnane who died in 1996; loving mother of Ann (Joseph) Haskin of Durham, NC, Shin (Carol) Murnane of Syracuse, John F. (Karen) Murnane Jr. of Troy, Mary (Joe Merola) Culliton of Troy, Michael J. (Annette) Murnane of Troy, Peggy (John) Brandano of Parkland, FL, and Theresa (Gary) Grimm of Latham; sister of Mrs. Edward (Helen) Cummings of Watervliet and the late Lucy Gaynor and Wilford Poulin who died in World War II. Charles Bernard, 77, of Nederland died, Sunday January 30, 2005 at Mid-Jefferson Hospital in Nederland. Mr. Bernard a native of Hawkins County, TN was born June 8, 1928 and had been a mid-county area resident since 1966. He retired from the United States Navy as a Chief E-7 after serving in WW II, Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. He was also retired from the Wiengarten Super Markets where he served as a butcher for many years. He was a member of the Seventh Street Baptist Church in Nederland. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Bernard of Nederland; daughters, Susan Bernard Robinson and husband, Steward of Nederland, Amy Bernard Prowse of Schererville, IN; four grandchildren, Chris and Cody Robinson, Tabitha and Miranda Prowse. He was a quiet man who enjoyed TV and meeting his friends at the St. George Mall. Though his stay at Passamaquoddy Lodge was brief, he made a whole new family there. Resting at the St. George Funeral Home (755-3533), 26 Portage Street, St. George, NB, with visiting on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The service will be held from The Gary E. Cote, 60, of 13 Cote Ave., South Ashburnham, a longtime local business owner and former town selectman, died Sunday, Jan. 30, in UMass Memorial Healthcare, University Campus, Worcester after a long illness. He was born in Gardner on Oct. 16, 1944, the son of Dorothy B. (Currier) Cote and the late Robert G. Cote and lived in Ashburnham all of his life. He graduated from Oakmont Regional High School in 1962 and began a career that for many years had been his passion -- cars and motorcycles. He owned and operated Cote’s Garage in South Ashburnham, formerly known as Bob’s Fix It Shop, until illness required that he retire in 2004.Active in town affairs, Mr. Cote served as a selectman in the town of Ashburnham. He was a life member and former Treasurer of the Turnpike Rod and Gun Club in Ashburnham and served on its Board of Directors. He was also an associate member of the Thomas P. Sweeney, Post 142 American Legion of Ashburnham. Friends and family will also fondly remember his other great passion -- his dogs. David bred and raised Siberian Huskies. HYLAND, Margaret Noreen (nee McManus). Passed away on January 30, 2005 at the Lakeshore General Hospital, Pointe-Claire in her seventy-seventh year. Beloved wife of Bruce O'Neil Hyland. Loving mother to her five sons, Ted, Bobby, Paul, Tony and Jamie, and her daughters-in-law Mary Corkery, Mary Noreen Farrell, and Charlene Aleck. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Donahue) McManus, and grew up in Halifax, N.S.; she received a Bachelor of Library Science degree, St. Francis Xavier University ('50) and a Bachelor of Science degree, McGill University ('52). She leaves her sisters, Sheila Haliburton (Halifax), Elizabeth McCarty (Falmouth, Mass.), and Patricia Woodford (Baddeck, N.S.), and was predeceased by her brother, Jim McManus, and her sister, Eileen McManus. She was the absolutely delighted Nanny to her grandchildren Rory, Cara, Kathleen, Justine, Hillary, Ocean and Sara. Her nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends will miss her mischievous smile and her warm and generous heart. The family would like to thank Dr. Jane Nayar for her years of dedicated care.
