Nora Emily Smith Funeral arrangements by Chapel Lawn Funeral Home Nora Emily Smith, age 94, died peacefully on Sunday, December 26, 2004 at the St. Boniface Hospital. Nora will be lovingly remembered by four daughters, Pat Powell, Janet (Ken) Hjorleifson, Judy Monro, Jeanne (Ken) Wakshinsky; and son Norman (Beverley). She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband John; sons-in-law Tim Powell and Jack Monro. Nora was born and educated in London, England. Before coming to Canada in 1941, she worked for the Telegraph Office in London. She and her husband came to Toronto and later settled in Winnipeg. They raised their family in Winnipeg and spent many summers at the family cottage at Ponemah Beach. Part of their retirement years were spent at their Gimli condo. Many thanks to the nurses and staff at the St. Boniface Hospital and Dr. Mould for their kindness and good care. A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 3, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Interment and reception will follow. WOOD, Katherine (Kitty) MacLean Canada's First Female Air Traffic Controller Peacefully on Monday December 27, 2004 aged 93. Daughter of the late John and Helen Wood of Scotland. Katherine was born in Dunbarton, Scotland and emigrated to Canada with her family in 1930. She is fondly remembered by her nephew Alexander Wood of Kelowna, BC, her niece Dr. Heather MacFadyen of Canmore AB, and grand-niece Alexandra Holly MacFadyen of Toronto. BERNSTEIN, Alan Leslie Peacefully in Ottawa on Wednesday, December 29, 2004, 93 years young. Husband of the late Ethel Wiesman. Brother of the late Sam Bernstein and the late Sarah Cramer. He was beloved by all who knew him as a parent and mentor, and was treasured by his children Bob Bernstein and Judy Bernstein, Janet and Steven Mendelsohn; his grandchildren Seth, Jonah and Erica Bernstein; Joshua and Daniel Mendelsohn; his special niece and nephews Hannah Engelstad, and Michael and David Cramer; his colleagues Lionel Mincoff and the late Harry Mayerovitch; his best friend Lorna Scherzer. He lived a remarkable life of architecture, music and family. His optimism, humour and unconditional love are an inspiration and comfort to us all. Flora Girard December 18, 1906 - December 29, 2004 Funeral arrangements by Desjardins Funeral Chapel FLORA GIRARD Paisiblement, à la Villa Youville de Sainte-Anne, est décédée le 29 décembre 2004, à l’âge de 98 ans, Mlle Flora Girard. Elle laisse dans le deuil de nombreux nièces et neveux des familles Bédard, Champagne, Arbez et Desautels; un beau-frère Robert Arbez (St-Boniface). Flora fut prédécédée par ses parents Adéline (Beaudry) (1958) et Joseph Girard (1942); ses soeurs Annie (feu Antoine Desautels), Jeanne (feu Joseph Champagne), Soeur Stella, m.o., et Elie-Anne Arbez; un frère Père Albert, o.m.i., nièces et neveux, en particulier Noëlline qu’elle a beaucoup manquée . Flora est née à Sainte-Anne le 18 décembre 1906. Ses études terminées elle entra dans la Congrégation des Soeurs Oblates pendant plusieurs années. Elle enseigna au Jardin de l’Enfance … une carrière qui ne lui plaisait pas. Avant de prononcer ses derniers voeux, elle laisse la Congrégation et retourne à Sainte-Anne pour travailler au magasin familial. Eventuellement elle déménagea à Saint-Boniface et travailla pendant plus de 20 ans à l’Hôpital de Saint-Boniface … un travail qu’elle a bien aimé. Après sa retraite elle aimait beaucoup voyager avec amies ou parentées. Femme de grande foi elle assistait à la messe chaque jour … c’était une priorité. Plusieurs ont profité de ses talents artitisques…peintures…coutures…Elle visitait les missions d’Albert et de Stella, spécialement celles de Duck Bay et Fort Alexandre, ou, avec ses soeurs organisaient des ventes bric-à-brac. Les coussins qu’elle confectionnaient ont fait le décor de plusieurs residences. Depuis septembre 1995, elle quitta la ville pour revenir s’installer à Sainte-Anne dans un logement à la Villa Youville. L’ouverture du nouveau service des soins infirmiers l’ont accueilli par la suite. Les prières auront lieu à 19h00 le lundi 3 janvier 2005 au Salon mortuaire Desjardins, 357, rue Des Meurons. La messe de la Résurrection aura lieu en l’église de Sainte-Anne le mardi 4 janvier 2005 à 10h30 avec le visionnement à 10h00. L’inhumation des restes se fera dans un avenir rapproché. La famille tient à remercier sincèrement les médecins de Sainte-Anne, en particulier Dr. Duval. Un très grand merci au personnel des soins infirmiers pour les excellents soins. Un remerciement très special à sa niece et infirmière Suzanne (Arbez) Gurican de la Villa pour les services innombrables et son “Poteau de vieillesse”. FLORA GIRARD Peacefully, Flora Girard, passed away on Tuesday December 29, 2004, at the Villa Youville in Ste. Anne at the age of 98 years. Flora is survived by numerous nieces and nephews from the Bédard, Champagne, Arbez and Desautels families; a brother-in-law Robert Arbez (St. Boniface). She was predeceased by her parents Adéline (1958) and Joseph (1942); her sisters Elie-Anne Arbez, Sister Stella, O.M., Jeanne (Joseph) Champagne and Annie (Antoine) Desautels; one brother Father Albert, O.M.I., numerous nieces and nephews, especially Noëlline whom she missed dearly. Flora was born in Ste. Anne on December 18, 1906. After completing her schooling she entered the Congregation of the Oblate Sisters. During her noviciate she taught school at “Jardin de l’Enfance” on Masson Street. She didn’t like this profession at all. She therefore chose to leave the order before her final vows and return to work with her parents in Ste. Anne. They owned a grocery store so they could use her help. Eventually she decided to move to the city and started a new job at the St. Boniface General Hospital. She worked there for over twenty years. She was a very meticulous and proficient person. She enjoyed her job tremendously. Her retirement years were spent traveling with friends and family. She also loved to take the bus and go shopping but not before atteneding daily mass. This was a priority for her. She was artistically inclined. Her paintings and the more than 600 cushions she sewed are just a sample of all the hours she spent sharing her talents. Numerous visits at Albert and Stella’s “missions” organizing rummage salles with her sisters, was a time she cherished the most. The cushions are now decorating many of these homes. Since September 1995, she returned to Ste. Anne where she took up residence at Villa Youville. When the time came for special care the nursing section welcomed her and took good care of her. Prayers will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 3rd, 2005, at Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons Street. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 04, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. in the Ste. Anne Roman Catholic Church. Viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment of the cremated remains will take place at a later date. Special thanks to the doctors expecially Dr. Duval, the personnel and nurses for all their wonderful care; Sisters Rioux and Forest … special angels…for all their visits…prayers…for being there! Gillie, Grace Helen The death of Grace Gillie of St John & St Stephen Nursing Home, Saint John, NB, occurred December 29, 2004. She was the daughter of the late George and E. Blanche (Lindsay) Hughes. She was a resident of Cornwall, Ontario, before coming to Saint John, NB. She was a member of Knox St Paul's United Church being involved in the outreach visitation. Gerard P. Leger MEMRAMCOOK, NB - Gerard P. Leger of La Hetriere passed away at Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Hospital on Thursday, December 30, 2004 at the age of 90. Born in La Hetriere, he was the son of the late Pierre O. Leger and the late Eugenie Bourque. He was a member of the Golden Age Club of Memramcook. He worked at C.N.R. for Dept. of Transportation until his retirement. Helen Pakenham, 59 Helen Irene Pakenham, 59, of Brockville, died in the Brockville General Hospital on December 7. She was born Helen Irene Walker on April 24, 1945 to parents Paul Herbert Walker and the former Irene Elizabeth McNish. She was raised and educated in Lyn and Brockville. She worked at Black and Decker on the assembly line beginning in 1969 until her retirement in 1986. She was also a companion to Mrs. Marie Robb. She enjoyed playing croquet, listening to country music, helping others and taking care of her cat, Queenie. She was also a member of the Salvation Army Church in Brockville. She is survived by ex-husbands James Gilmour and William Christopher Pakenham, and her three sons and two daughters, James Gilmour and friend Connie, Joseph Gilmour and friend Linde, Robert Gilmour and friend Melisa, Roxanne Gilmour and husband Donald, and Chrissy Pakenham, all of Brockville. Also surviving are her seven grandchildren, Donovan and Justin Coville, Melissa Cooper, Jessica and Domi Gilmour, Rebecca Gilmour and John Lowe. She is also survived by her parents Paul and Irene of Brockville and her three brothers and three sisters, Leonard and wife Mary of Athens, Carl and wife Sue of Brockville, Dale and wife Sue of Johnstown, Shirley Champagne of Brockville, Jo-ann Bow and husband Richard of Toledo, and Rosemary Fossile and husband Doug of Toledo. Mrs. Pakenham was predeceased by two brothers, David and Rodney Walker, two brothers-in-law Gord Champagne and Brian Harper and sister-in-law Cathy Walker. Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home in Brockville where the funeral was held in the chapel December 9. Capt. Phyllis Plundel-Colbourne, of the Salvation Army, officiated. McLEAN, ANGUS ROBERT - July 29, 1924 - December 28, 2004 - After a short battle with cancer, in his eighty-first year. Born in Bathurst, New Brunswick, son of the late Gladys (Bean) and Angus Ethelbert McLean. Brother of Donald B. McLean (Margaret), and the late Elizabeth (Betty) and John Heward. Dad was the much loved husband of 55 years of Marilyn (Marr) McLean and adored and proud father and (father-in-law) of Barbara (Mort Mitchnick), Diane (Marc Ratcliffe), Debbie (Sean Waller) and Judy (Stephen Goddard). He will be greatly missed by his six special grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, Luke, Robbie, Scott, and Allison, who loved and knew his as "Grunny Bob". He was also uncle to several nieces and nephews. Upon the early death of his father, the family moved to Montreal where he attended LCC and later Trinity College School. He served as a pilot in the RCAF from 1942-1945, and upon discharge studied at McGill University, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1950. A free spirit with a sense of entrepreneurial adventure, in 1951 Bob joined Hollinger Ungava Transport (Iron Ore Company of Canada) as a bush pilot and with Marilyn, went north for two years, but stayed for 35. Upon his retirement, they moved to Oakville and were able to travel and divide their time between Florida and summers at the beloved family cottage on Youghall Beach, N.B. where the highlight of every summer was when the family gathered. Dad had a tremendous circle of friends from every walk and stage of life who respected him for his lack of pretense, sense of fair play, loyalty, understated leadership and for his spirit. They kept in touch until the end. We thank the doctors of Oakville Trafalgar Hospital and the nurses and entire staff of 2C who were incredible. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 4th from 7-9 pm and a memorial service will be held on Wednesday January 5th, 2:30 pm at Ward Funeral Home, 109 Reynolds Street, Oakville (905-844-3221).
