Pietro SPEZIALE - Peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at the Hamilton General Hospital, on Monday, May 12, 2003, in his 84th year. Beloved husband of the late Maria. Dearly loved father and father-in-law of Angela and the late Larry Graham, Nancy and Richard Goddard, Charles Speziale, and the late Josephine Grayling. Loving Nonno of Shayne; David and Maria; Alessandra; Andrew. Proud great-grandfather of three great-grand- children. Dear brother of Adelina Capula, Maria Valentino, Carmelina Baracco, and the late Concentina Mattina. Survived by many nieces and nephews. Pietro was a member of the Racalmuto Club of Hamilton, and was one of the first family members to immigrate from Racalmuto, Sicily to Hamilton in 1939 to start a new life. He helped and supported many relatives and friends to immigrate to Hamilton. Pietro will be fondly remembered as an honest, loving man who believed in the simple life, and as a dedicated, hardworking provider for his family. Mariano DiFRANCO February 27, 1931 - May 21, 2003 It is with great sadness that the family of Mariano announces his sudden passing after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at St. Peter's Hospital, at the age of 72. Born in Rionero, Sannitico, Italy on February 27, 1931. Mariano is survived by his loving wife Angela (nee Alessi) of 44 years; son Mimmo (Linda) DiFranco, daughter Rosemary (Mario) Silot and daughter Josie (Vito) Pendola. The best grandfather to Mark, Melissa, Moraliza and Alicia. Mariano is also survived by one sister Antonietta DiFranco. Predeceased by his parents Rosario and Maria DiFranco, and brother Domenico DiFranco. He will be fondly remembered by his sister-in-law Maria, the late Calogero Sicurella, brother-in- law Giuseppe and Adelina Alessi, and Pietro and Maria-Assunta Alessi, many nieces, nephews and cousins in Hamilton, Argentina and Cleveland. Mariano was a dedicated employee of Stelco for 35 years and was also a devoted member of the Trieste Bocce Club. Norma Ann Laporte (née Little) July 17, 1933 - October 10, 2003 Laporte, Norma (nee Little) 70 years, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 10, 2003 at University Hospital in London surrounded by her family and close friends . The angels in heaven are rejoicing today for they have a new member within their ranks. Loving mother of Brian and wife Julie of London, Gary and wife Joan of Tecumseh, John Marc and wife Kim and Danny and wife Teresa. Survived by husband Rene. Treasured Nana to Louis, Natalie, Katie, Sam, Gracie, Andrew and Marc. Predeceased by parents Joseph Raymond (1975) and Martha (Labute) (2001) Little. Cherished sister /sister-in-law of Janet and Maurice Poirier of Essex; Bernice and Ted (1986) Merner; Marvin and Annette Little of Okanagan Falls, B.C. Bob (2003) and Annette Little of LaSalle; Ron and Donna Little; Paul and Janice (2001) Little of London; Lorraine and Tom Boutette of London. Best friend of Sister Paulette Mellon. Many nieces and nephews will sadly miss "Auntie Norma' for whom she held a special bond. Norma was always "on the go' and will be fondly remembered by many dear friends whose lives she touched with her infectious laugh, bright smile and open heart. Norma took all her roles in life very seriously. Be it family or friend, she belonged to everyone who knew her. Norma's gifted organizational skills made her an exceptional secretary. She worked for the YCS and YCW for many years and for the Windsor Separate School Board for over 30 years at several different schools. The many teachers, staff and hundreds of students that she encountered will never forget her for her senses of commitment, dedication and wonderful caring nature. She was an active member of Theatre Alive. Norma was small in stature but she was so grand in spirit that she defeated cancer for 24 years and succumbed only to the completeness of her life. Warm and sincere thanks and gratitude go to Sister Paulette Mellon, Sister Eileen Marie Hunter, Robert, Claire and all the Sisters at Holy Rosary Convent, and all who visited and cared for her in the last while. William Bernard Morgan It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Bill on Tuesday, June 10, 2003, in his 75th year. Predeceased by brother Arthur and parents Jessie and Arthur Morgan, sister Kathleen at birth. Longtime friend to Loretta Kehoe. Special uncle to Cecile McLaren-Franke, best friend to Laddie Maguire. Surrogate father to Billy (Jan), Patty (Ken), Debbie (Greg), Theresa (Johnny), Jackie and their children. Bill was very special to many others not mentioned, but will be thought of often from coast to coast. Bill was a war veteran, which is why he always had a great fight for a good life. Josephine Wawrzonek Zemla December 12, 1904 - June 21, 2003 Zemla, Josephine 98 years, at Windsor Regional Hospital, Metropolitan Campus, peacefully while surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 21, 2003. Beloved wife of the late Peter (1991). Loving mother of Edward (Vanessa) Zemla, Elizabeth (Richard) Kasprzak. Loving Babci to her grandchildren Paul, Katie, Mark, Veronica, Victoria and great grandchildren Jake, David and Paige. Mrs. Zemla emigrated from Poland in 1926. She met her husband in Windsor and was married for 59 years. One of her first jobs was working in the diet kitchen at the newly opened Metropolitan Hospital. For many years she worked at the Elmwood Casino. Mrs Zemla and her husband were very active in the Polish Community both at the "new" Dom Polski and also in the church. She was active in the Catholic Womens’ League where she was president for 25 years. She loved her grandchildren and was very involved with them. Visitation will be held at on Monday, June 23 from 2-5 and 7-9pm with parish prayers at 8 pm. Angelo Joseph D'Errico July 07, 1941 - July 19, 2003 After a courageous battle with cancer, it is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Angelo Joseph D'Errico. Angelo was born in Montreal on July 7th, 1941, son of predeceased parents Antonio and Catherine. He is survived by sisters Filomena (nee Nino Lombardi) and Mary (nee Norcia), sons Tony and Ron (Donna), nieces Mary, Gina, and Anna, nephew Terry, grandfather to Christopher and Nikki. Angelo was employed with the Canadian National Railroad and later with VIA Rail. He was manager of the claims Department for all of Western Canada. Due to offices closing down in Winnipeg, Angelo was transferred to Toronto. He later settled down in Hamilton Ontario, where he lived out the remainder of his days with his new wife (Norma) and her family. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Michael David Edwards July 02, 1977 - July 20, 2003 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden death of our son, Michael David Edwards on July 20, 2003 at the age of 26. Mike was born in Regina on July 2, 1977 and lit up our lives. Mike’s love of music became apparent at a very early age and he joined the Regina Lions Band at 8 years old. He excelled at playing the trumpet, winning many awards both in school and in his 10 years with the Lions Band. Drumming and percussion became his passion with bass, acoustic and electric guitar soon to follow, largely self-taught. Mike could pick up practically any instrument and make music. His family was constantly amazed at his talent. Mike attended McLurg and Centennial Schools, Thom Collegiate and the U of R. He loved performing and went on to play with many local bands and in many venues. He was at his happiest on stage. Predeceased by his grandpas Al Edwards and Jim Heseltine and his grandma Jean Heseltine, he leaves his grandma Helen Edwards, mom Shell, dad Bruce, brother Scott, uncle Terry Heseltine and his daughters Jennifer and Heather, uncle Jay Heseltine, auntie Cindy Heseltine and a large, loving extended family. Mary Margaret Ross (née Yellowback) August 16, 1942 - August 11, 2003 On August 11, 2003 Mary Margaret Ross passed away in Winnipeg at the age of 60 years old. Mary was born on August 16, 1942 in God’s Lake. There she met and married Johnnie Ross. They were married on October 9, 1958 and were married for 45 years. Mary moved to Winnipeg on September 15, 1996 for medical reasons. She was on dialysis and she had no choice but to leave her children and grandchildren behind. Mary had a great love for her family, including her adopted niece Claudia and grandchildren, Jocelyn, Tony and Yvette. Lindsay Marie Vogen Suddenly, on August 17, 2003 Lindsay Marie Vogen passed away in Winnipeg at age 21. Lindsay was predeceased by her step-grandparents Mel and Carol Buchan of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. She is survived by her mother, Cathy Whitehead of Edmonton, Alberta, her father Blair Vogen and his wife Linda of West St. Paul, Manitoba, and her sister, Christy Vogen (Dave) of Brandon, Manitoba. She is also survived by her grandparents, Jack and Marie Whitehead of Matlock, Manitoba and Carl and Betty Vogen of East St. Paul, Manitoba. She is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends too numerous to mention. She was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed. Lindsay was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 27, 1981. She attended school in North Kildonan at Maple Leaf School and Chief Peguis Junior High, where she was an honours student. She attended her first two years of high school at Miles MacDonell Collegiate and completed her grade 12 in Spruce Grove, Alberta. She then completed a post - secondary computer office specialist program in Spruce Grove. Lindsay was initially employed with Fun Sun Tours in Edmonton, Alberta and then moved back to Winnipeg in June of 2002 where she gained employment as an administrative assistant with a local real estate company until the time of her passing. Lindsay left behind many close friends in both Edmonton and Winnipeg. She was involved in Brownies as a young child. She took two years of cosmetology in high school and was always up on the latest styles. She loved spending time with her friends and family and was known as a social butterfly. Viewing for imêmediate family only, will be on Wednesday, August 20th at Glen Eden Funeral Home at 4477 Main Street with cremation to follow. Funeral services will be held at Glen Eden Funeral Home on Thursday, August 21st at 2:00 p.m. with Winnipeg Police Service Chaplain Devon Clunis officiating. Dr. Brian D. Best, F.R.C.S.(Edin.), F.R.C.S. (Can.) - August 20, 1910 - May 30, 2004 - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Brian D. Best on May 30, 2004 at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 93 years. Brian is survived by his beloved wife Jean (nee Prior) to whom he was married for 63 years, his daughter Shelagh Pickard (Les) of West Vancouver, his son Bob (Joyce) of WInnipeg, granddaughters Raina (David) of Winnipeg, Heather (Stuart) of Lions Bay, B.C., sister Mona Waugh of Calgary, sister Moira McLean of Shoal Lake, Manitoba, sister-in-law Betty Lou Best and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Dr. Robert M. in 1942 and Ann (nee McBride) in 1961, his sister Kathleen in 1985, his brother Denis in 1988 and his identical twin brother Kevin in 2000. Dr. Best was born in Hampshire, England on August 20, 1910, but his family moved to Killarney, Manitoba when he was a year old. He grew up in a medical household and often accompanied his father, a general practitioner, on house calls in a horse-drawn cutter. Dr. Best attended school in Killarney and in 1927, while in grade 11, he was awarded the Governor-General's medal for scholastic, athletic and social achievement. That same year he played a part in the capture, by the police, of Earl Nelson, the Strangler, who was one of the most notorious murderers in North America at the time. At the University of Manitoba, Dr. Best had a distinguished record. In the first two years of his medical course, he won medals in Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. In 1934, his final year in Medicine, he was awarded the Gold Medal for the highest standing in the entire medical course, the Silver Medal for the highest standing in the final year, the Chown prize in Medicine and the Chown Prize in Surgery. Dr. Best was a member of the Theta Kappa Psi medical fraternity. After completing post graduate study for his Fellowship in Edinburgh in 1938, he returned to Winnipeg to begin an association with the Winnipeg General Hospital (now the Health Sciences Centre), Medical Arts, the Winnipeg Clinic and the University of Manitoba. His relationship with these institutions was to last for over 40 years. He was widely regarded as an outstanding surgeon and diagnostician, and one of the leading obstetricians and gynaecologists in Western Canada. As an obstetrician in Winnipeg, he personally delivered, or supervised the delivery of thousands of babies during his long career. Many of them were among the most complicated caes. As a surgeon, Dr. Best introduced to Manitoba, brand new procedures with respect to treatment for cancer of the cervix. He was also a passionate and dedicated teacher of medical students for many years. To this day, he is remembered by former students for his lucid explanations of intricate medical processes. Dr. Best was involved in numerous professional organizations over the years. He was Past President of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, Past President of the Canadian Gynaecological Society, Past President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba, Past President of the Medico-Legal Society of Manitoba, an Examiner of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Canadian representative to the Radiumhemmett of Stockholm. Sweden for cancer of the cervix, member of the Board of Directors, Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, Manitoba Representative to the Medical Council of Canada, an Honorary Member of the Pacific Northwest Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, a member of the Canadian Medical Association, the Manitoba Medical Association and the Winnipeg Medical Society, and was Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Manitoba from 1952 to 1975 (and later, Professor Emeritus) . He was the main force behind the establishment of a department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Winnipeg Clinic in 1944, and headed that section until 1975. Dr. Best contributed many scientific papers to various medical publications and journals on an international scale. Among his earlier colleagues was Dr. Alex Andison, who once observed of Dr. Best, “Brian is a man of insatiable curiosity, particularly in the realm of ideas, evident from even a cursory glance at his library, which embraces a catholic array of subjects by no means limited to his professional sphere. His sometimes esoteric studies partly explain the profundity of his observations on human behaviour”. Dr. Best was very proud of his family: his wife Jean, his son Bob, his daughter Shelagh and his grandchildren Raina (who is following in his footsteps as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist) and Heather (who also is following in his footsteps as an Educator). He was also very fond of his daughter-in-law Joyce, and his son-in-law, Les. In the latter years of his long and distinguished life, Dr. Best found it more difficult to move around. However, his incisive mentality, aided by a prodigious appetite for reading and learning, was dominant to the end. A special thanks to all of the wonderful staff at St. Boniface Hospital and the Home Care workers who cared for Dr. Best. A memorial service will take place on Thursday, June 3, 2004 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.

She is survived by her daughter, Sheila and her husband John Crangle. Margaret was affectionately called, “Nana” by her grandsons Dale, Glen and Craig. Gudrun "Runa" Jonasina Sutcliffe February 25, 1915 - October 09, 2004 Funeral arrangements by Chapel Lawn Funeral Home After a lengthy illness, Runa passed away at the Riverview Health Centre. Runa was predeceased by her husband, William in 1976; her parents, Jon and Bjorg Howardson; brothers Mundi, Ronald, Norman, and one brother in infancy. She will be remembered by her sister, Allie, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Runa was born in Vogar and grew up in Lundar. She married William on August 17, 1946. Runa lived in St. James and worked at Eaton's on Portage Avenue. She enjoyed sewing, baking and gardening. Runa took great pride in her home, and it was always open to family and friends. The family would like to thank Lynn Saunders and all the staff at CD4 at Riverview Health Centre. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 16 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Interment and reception will follow. Maria Nowostawski (née Kolacz) 1925 - May 09, 2004 “Forever in Our Hearts” It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dearest Mother, Maria Nowostawski, on Sunday, May 9th, 2004 after a long illness. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband, Jerry; daughters Chris and Irene; son John; in-laws; grandchildren; and by many relatives in Poland and Ukraine. Maria (Mom) was a quiet, soft-spoken person who was also an avid social talker. She had spent years raising and caring for her family and working part-time until her retirement. Our thanks to everyone for their prayers and support over the past many months. Laybolt, Dartmouth; son, Glen Laybolt, at home; brothers, Alden (Lillian) Dockendorff, Prince Edward Island; Carmen Dockendorff, New Brunswick; sister, Elaine Buttler, Ontario; grandaughter, Tawnya Laybolt, at home. He is also survived by sisters, Mabel (Jim) Longaphy, Fairview; Ruby, Hatchet Lake; brother, Allan, Halifax. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Winnifred (Hartlen); granddaughter, Kelsey; sisters, Eleanor, Marie, Myrtle, Annie, Jean and Gertrude in infancy. Ruth P Scoates ( Power) - 05/10/2004 At the Montfort Hospital on Sunday, May 9, 2004 in her 88th year. Ruth was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Bessie Bella Power. Predeceased by her sister Myrtle and brothers Arthur and Harold. She is survived by Reg, her cherished husband of 68 years; son Jon (Mary); grandchildren, James (Dominique Weis) and Liz (Gordon Laidlaw) and two great-grandchildren, Josie and Samuel. She will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews in British Columbia and along the eastern shore of Nova Scotia.
