MacLACHLAN, Mary Jane (nee Smallbone), Mary MacLachlan, beloved wife of Kent MacLachlan, formerly of St. Catharines, died after a brave battle with cancer in the KeriKeri Hospice near their home in Russell, New Zealand on January 18, 2004. Born in N ew Zealand on April 23, 1950; Mary, following an extended overseas tour, met and married Kent MacLachlan in Canada in 1981. They lived for many years in St. Catharines where Mary gardened, sailed and ran a catering business. In 1990 they moved to Rus sell where Mary and Kent ran the popular Bed & Breakfast, Inn the Pink, that reflected Mary's love of all things pink. In her spare time Mary taught at the local school, tended her spectacular gardens, cooked up mouth watering pavlovas and batches of her inimitable chutney, Mary's Mistake. She entertained at functions with her fun-loving trio The Bridesmaids and her pink guitar, and established a firm reputation as Mary the Hook with her fishing prowess when she sailed on Bubblicious, her pink s ailboat. Mary's energy and zest for life were reflected in all she did. She wasn't just the life of the party, she was the party! Mary is survived by her loving parents, Betty and Bruce Smallbone, her sister Anne and husband John Griffiths, nephews T ony and Nick Griffiths, her brother Peter Smallbone and his wife Marlena. Mary will be greatly missed by her husband Kent, Kent's daughter Sarah MacLachlan and her partner Noah Richler, and Sarah's children Sophie and Nathalie Marsh, and by Kent's so n Robert MacLachlan and his wife Cathy Andres and their children, Andrew and Kate MacLachlan. A memorial service will take place in Russell, New Zealand on Sunday, January 25, 2004. ALLAN RALPH HAGEN Allan Ralph Hagen, 38, passed away suddenly at the family farm in Blackhawk, Ont. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004. Al was born Dec. 4, 1965 in Emo, Ont. to Ralph and Mary Hagen. He was raised on the family farm and loved to spend time there. As a young man, he worked on the diamond drill with his father, Ralph, and then helped his brother, Cliff, build log homes. He was very family-oriented and enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews. He had been especially close to his brother, Kenny. He leaves behind his father, Ralph; brothers, Cliff and wife, Cheryl, and Kevin and wife, Tina, all of Blackhawk, Ont.; sisters, Shirley and husband, Larry Allen, of Barwick, Ont., Marilyn Saniuk and her friend, Jeff, of Winnipeg, Man., Wanda and husband, Conrad LaBelle, of Barwick, Ont., and Lori-Ann and husband, Jean Theriault, of Kenora, Ont. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews, Trevor, Shauna, Christopher, Allison, Crystal, Justin, Amanda, Travis, Tyler, Melissa, Samantha, Miranda, Dustin, Travis, Dillon, and James; great-nephews, Cole, Terrell, and Garrett; great-nieces, Nadine, Jane, and Clara; uncle, Walter Hagen; aunts, Louella Hoskins and Myrtle Loveday; as well as numerous extended family. Al was predeceased by his mother, Mary on Jan. 9, 1996; brothers, Kenny on Oct. 27, 1992 and Stan on April 1, 1996; and niece, Jolene Allen. A memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Off Lake Covenant Church, with Pastor Ken Johnson officiating. Cremation has taken place in Thunder Bay, Ont. Interment will take place in the Chapple Cemetery in Barwick at a later date. The honourary pallbearers were Al’s nephews, Trevor Allen, Christopher Saniuk, Justin Hagen, Travis LaBelle, Tyler LaBelle, Dustin LaBelle, Travis Theriault, Dillon Chapman, and James Hagen. DesJARDINS, Edward (Ted) 1937 - 2004 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Edward (Ted) DesJardins, beloved husband of Rose DesJardins of Calgary. Ted passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at home, on Monday, January 19, 2004 at the age of 66 years. Ted was born June 9, 1937 in Ottawa, ON to Margaret and Earl DesJardins. He was a true humanitarian and was involved in numerous volunteer activities including the Calgary Northeast Eye-Opener Lions Club since the 1970's. He was also a member and past president of the Canadian Citizenship Federation. Ted was involved with the Calgary Multicultural Centre as well as various City of Calgary functions and events. He was also a Red Cross Blood Donor since 1970. Ted worked for many years as a Realtor, Canadian citizenship Judge and served on the Calgary Housing Authority for over ten years. Ted will be dearly missed by his wife of forty-one years, Rose; his four children, Mike, Tammy (Jim), Debbie (Peter), and Cara; three grandchildren, Ashley, Tyson and Colyn. He is also survived by brother Bud DesJardins; sister Pam (John) Meunier; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and in-laws. MARTIN, Frances Marie (née Lafleche) 1913-2004 - At the West Nipissing General Hospital in Sturgeon Falls, January 18, 2004 in her 91st year, with her family by her side. Loving mother of Margaret (Claude Lalonde) Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Jack D. Martin (late Jane), North Bay. Dear grandmother of Micheline (Terry Trottier), Marc Lalonde, Robert Lalonde (Maria), Kendra Jill (Alain Forest) and Jason Martin (fiancée Anne Kirik). Great-grandmother of Stéphanie, Taylor, Bailey, Danielle, Corey, Joey and Alexandria. Predeceased by her husband Roy A. Martin (March 21/2003); her parents, Exilda and Joseph Lafleche; brothers, Joe, John, Simon and Wilfrid Lafleche; and two sisters, Alice Mayer and Auxilia Lacroix. Survived by one brother, Gerard (Pete) Lafleche (Timmins); four sisters; Jeanne Britton (London), Fern Moon (Sturgeon Falls), Helen Drennan (Sudbury) and Jacqueline Forbes (Cambridge). Mrs. Martin was a member of PDAC (Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada). She was also a member of COPA (Canadian Owners and Pilots Association). She often accompanied her husband Roy on many of his trips throughout Canada, USA, Mexico and Australia. She maintained homes in Mina, Nevada, La Paz and Navajoa (Mexico); Laverton, Australia; and later in Sturgeon Falls during their retirement years. Frances and Roy were much admired by their mining peers and were considered the perfect partners. They were a team. She will be sadly missed by her family, her loving nieces and nephews, and by her many friends around the world. Her family gratefully thanks Sue Moon and the staff at the West Nipissing General Hospital for the loving care she received while she was there. As per her wishes, a private memorial service was held at the THÉORæT FUNERAL HOME to celebrate her life on Wednesday, January 21. Wally Waslyk passed away at the Smooth Rock Falls Hospital on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004. He was 84 years-old. Mr. Waslyk was born in Fish Creek, Saskatchewan on Apr. 16, 1919. He was a resident of Smooth Rock Falls from 1947 and worked as an employment supervisor at Abitibi, retiring after 35 years of service with the company, in 1982. His favorite pastimes were reading, watching TV and travelling. He was described as a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Waslyk is survived by his wife, Jeannine of Smooth Rock Falls, two sons; Ken (Jill) of Edmonton and John (Darlene) of Smooth Rock Falls, two daughters; Kathleen Taylor (Yvon) and Leslie Gagnon (Denis), both of Smooth Rock Falls. He is also survived by grandchildren, Jennifer, Christopher, Todd, Jessica, Karen, Eric, Dylan, James and David and by sister, Mary Desmoreau (Ray) of Hamilton. Mr. Waslyk was predeceased by two sisters; Anna Lucyk and Catherine Cherwinski. Visitation will be held at Ste-Gertrudeís Church in Smooth Rock Falls on Thurs., Jan. 22, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Ste-Gertrudeís Church on Fri., Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. Interment will take place in the spring at the Smooth Rock Falls Cemetery.
