Died peacefully on November 4, 2003 at the age of 88 years. Harold is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Hazel. He is also survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law Norma and Leonard Grace, Arnold and Beverley Ireland, Joan Hines, Dawn Ireland, Lyle and Iona Ireland, Ron and Jean Ireland as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 2 sisters-in-law and 3 brothers-in-law, Opal, Geraldine, Keith, Hilton and Vern. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Thursday, November 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Friday, November 7 at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Shawville, Quebec at 1:30 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Alzheimer Society.

SYDNEY (SUSAN) VANDAL Suddenly, on Sunday, November 2, 2003, at the Health Sciences Centre, Sydney passed away with her mother and her sister at her side. Sydney will be sadly missed by her everloving mother, Julie Chester; sister Valerie; brother-in-law John Himkowski; nephew Morgan Himkowski; as well as her aunts and cousins. She was predeceased by her father Mel Vandal in 1983. Sydney also leaves behind her faithful dog Robbie, who will miss her very much. She was born on April 18, 1964, and lived in Winnipeg all her life. Sydney was very creative and she loved to write and draw. Sydney's family will honor her memory privately, no formal funeral service will be held. LESLIE, BELVA ELTHERIA - Peacefully, at her residence, following a lengthy illness and surrounded by her family, on November 3, 2003, Mrs. Belva Eltheria (Hooper) Leslie, wife of the late Arthur Preston Leslie of Back Bay, NB. Born in Back Bay, NB on April 18, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Ottie and Blanche (Hanley) Hooper. A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, she is survived by one son, Terry (Eva) Leslie of St. George, NB; adopted son, Grant (Faith) Hooper of Back Bay, NB; four grandchildren, Kyle, Keith, Kory, and Nicole (Hooper) Thompson; two great-grandsons, Keenan, and Konner; and two great-granddaughters, Abby and Grace; one sister, Helen (Melvin) French of Back Bay, NB; special nephew, Wayne (Karen) Hooper of St. George, NB; nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her husband, she was pre-deceased by two brothers, Stillman and Artie Hooper; one sister, Flavilla Hooper. Belva had been employed by Connors Bros. Ltd. for 60 years as a packer and as a Floor Supervisor at her retirement. She enjoyed camping and was a life time member of the OES Granite Chapter #15. Resting at the St. George Funeral Home (755-3533), 26 Portage Street, St. George, with visiting on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The service will be held at The Gary E. Waycott Memorial Chapel at the St. George Funeral Home on Wednesday at 2 pm with Rev. Gillis Mullin officiating, followed by interment in the St. George Rural Cemetery. In Belva's memory, donations to a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family. FAIRBAIRN, KATHERINE KAVANAUGH The death of Katherine Kavanaugh Fairbairn of Fredericton, wife of Harry Fairbairn occurred on Tuesday, November 04, 2003 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born in Salmon Point, Ont., she was a daughter of the late Adrian and Georgina (Miller) Tuttle. Mrs. Fairbairn was a Public Health Nurse from 1949-1993. She was the Atlantic Representative for more than 10 years of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada. She was a beautiful seamstress, enjoyed music, bird watching, figure skating, cooking and comedy. Katherine's greatest joy came from helping others; her ability to connect emotionally and provide guidance to the people in her life serves as tribute to her caring nature. Besides her husband, she is survived by four sons, Duncan Fairbairn of Fredericton, Todd Fairbairn of Burnaby, BC, Ross Fairbairn of Fredericton and Scott Fairbairn (Beth) of Fredericton; one grandchild, Sydney Erin Fairbairn; two sisters, Peggy Bishop (Norman) and Betty McBurney (William) both of Toronto; two nieces, Elizabeth and Lois Anne Bishop. No Visitation by request. The funeral service will be held from the York Funeral Home's T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Friday, November 7, 2003 at 10 am with Mr. William Walker officiating. Peacefully in his ninety first year. Sergey Grek, a Cossack from the Kuban region, was born in the Ukraine in 1912. Eugenya Kosenko, his beloved wife of sixty-four years predeceased him in 1999. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Galina (Tony Rybeynski), Serge (Claudine) and Boris (Solange). Devoted grandfather of Nina, Natalia, Vincent, Philippe, Mark, Christina and Sasha. He was an audiovisual engineer and was employed by Atlantic Films Limited. He worked on the installation at the NAC and was chief Supervisor of the audiovisual systems at Expo '67. "To work towards perfection means to move yourself from the material to the spiritual life, which has no time and no death, only goodness." (Leo Tolstoy). FLORENCE MARIE FLORIDA DENNY (nee LECLERC) February 21, 1938- November 2, 2003 Peacefully, surrounded by numerous family members Florence Marie Florida Denny (nee Leclerc) at E.M. Crowe Memorial in Eriksdale, MB, after a courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by her parents, Adelard and Cecile; sister Elizabeth; brothers, Denis and Louis. Surviving to mourn her loss, husband David; daughters, Lorrine (Corinne) (Gunter), Denise (Gary) and Elizabeth; stepson Shawn Snudden; sisters, Doris (Peter), Julia (Don), Ida (George), Yvonne (Claude), Linda (Ian); brothers, Robert (Barbara), Andre, Henri (Mary), Arthur, Raymond; sisters-in-law, Angela and Margaret; eight grandchildren, Jeanette, Kevin, Richard, Heather, Nathan, Wyatt, Adele, Rielle. DES BARRES, Harry Joseph-84, Minudie, passed away peacefully Monday, November 3, 2003, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst. Born in Minudie, he was a son of the late Joseph and Annie (Burke) Des Barres. He worked at various places over the years, including the Minudie Community Pasture, Amherst Woodworking Plant and was a caretaker at River Hebert District High School. He was a member of St. Denis Restoration Committee, and for years looked after St. Denis Cemetery in Minudie. He enjoyed taking care of his horses. Harry was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be remembered for his loving and caring ways. BORMKE, GEORGE DENIS - The death of George Denis Bormke, husband of Diane Bormke, occurred on November 1, 2003, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, after a three-year battle with cancer. Born in Revelstoke, BC, he was the son of Marta and the late Anselm Bormke. Besides his wife and mother he is survived by his children Marta (Paul) McGovern, Tom (Colleen) and Janet (Christopher) Moore, his brother Ronald Bormke, his sisters Edna (Hugh) Methot and Ann (Kevin) Pym, his grandchildren Rebekka, Sean, Lacey-Lynn, Jordan, Mya and Lauren and several nieces and nephews. He was an active member of St. Augustine's Parish, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #9176 and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #69. After a 25 year career in the Canadian Armed Forces (RCAF), he attended Loyalist College (where he made the Dean's list) and then joined Accuray of Canada for several years before beginning another career with Canadian Pacific Railway. Throughout his life George was active in sports - a volunteer and a Master Official in Competitive Swimming, Umpire-in-Chief of Broomball officials in NS and a softball Umpire. He enjoyed hunting and had a fishing camp on the Miramichi. He was also an avid hiker and knew most of the trails in southern NB. Very recently he acted as Assistant Returning Officer for the Riding of Grand Bay-Westfield in the Provincial Election. Although there will be no visiting, following cremation at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row (634-7424), the Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at 2:00 PM, from St. Augustine's Church, Westfield. LINTON, ALICE M. - The death of Miss Alice M. Linton occurred on November 2, 2003, at her residence, the Carleton Kirk Lodge. Born in Saint John she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Martha A. (Wilmot) Linton. She was employed with T. H. Estabrook Co. and Brook Bond Co. for over 43 years. She was a member of Portland United Church and served as treasurer of the Sunday School. Alice was a member of the IODE, LaTour Chapter, for over fifty years and held various offices Secretary and Treasurer. She was a member of Lancaster Diamonds Group and the Hillcrest Villagers Group. She served with the Community Concert Association. She is survived by her brother Murray S. Linton of Saint John, several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Wendell R. Linton, and her sisters Ruth; Mrs. Fred K. Brenan, Bertha; Mrs. Horace Mayes, Dorothy; Mrs. Maxwell Lingley, and Margaret; Mrs. J. Malcolm Redding. A veteran of the Second World War, Harry served with Allied Forces as a pilot and commando and also with the Active Forces as a Merchant Sailor. CRAWFORD, PAULINE M. - The death of Pauline M. Crawford, wife of George Crawford, formerly of Westfield, NB, occurred on November 1, 2003, at the Carleton Kirk Lodge. Born at Waasis, NB, she was the daughter of the late George and Jenny (MacFarlane) Little. Mrs. Crawford was a life long resident of Westfield and was an active member of St. James Anglican Church. Besides her husband she is survived by her son William (Bill) and his wife Julia of Dartmouth, NS, her sister Frances Stanton and her husband Charles of New York, her grandchildren Michael Crawford and his wife Kenda, Laura and her husband Scott McCulloch, Nahanni Nagle and his wife Sarah, Jonathon Nagle, her great-grandchildren Rachel Crawford, Liam McCulloch, Leith Nagle and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Carolyn Jane Nagle. The family would like to express their appreciation to the nurses and staff of the Carleton Kirk Lodge for the wonderful care their wife and mother received. THERESA GEORGETTE GAGNON (nee PIERSON) Peacefully, with her family at her side, Theresa passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2003, at the age of 54. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Gerald; her daughters, Lise (Michael Collingwood) of Winnipeg, Andree (Richard Boyling) of Ottawa, and Joelle Gagnon of Ottawa; her brothers, Bert (Melodye) of Estevan, Jerry (Sallie) of Estevan, Don (Diane) of Edmonton, George (Kelly) of Regina; as well as many other family members, numerous friends and former colleagues. Theresa was born September 9, 1949 in Winnipeg. After completing high school in Fort Garry, Theresa, who had always loved children, entered the teaching profession. Theresa taught at St. Edward's Catholic School and in 1972, she and her husband, Gerald, went to Nigeria as CUSO volunteers. After her return, Theresa chose to stay at home to raise her daughters. She later returned to education, first as a teacher's aide and then as a French imêmersion kindergarten teacher (Laura Secord School and Stanley Knowles School). In October 2001, Theresa was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). The progress of the disease forced her to leave teaching, which was a major disappointment for her. As her body progressively deteriorated, she was a model of strength and determination. She maintained her dignity and serenity even when she became totally dependent on others for even her most basic needs. The family wishes to thank the ALS support team at Deer Lodge Hospital for their support and encouragement, the community and health care specialists from Kenora who worked with Theresa, and the palliative staff at St. Boniface General Hospital for their kind assistance during her final hours of life. A memorial service celebrating Theresa's life will be held on Wednesday, November 5 at 11:00 a.m. in the Edward J. Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Theresa's memory to the ALS Society of Manitoba, Deer Lodge Centre, N108 N Pavilion, 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3.
