D.F.C. WW II Veteran Educator Peacefully on January 31, 2003 at the Perley-Rideau Veterans Health Centre in his 91st year. Loving husband of Betty (nee Ridout). Father of David (Charlotte) of Ottawa, Dyann Gray (Chuck) of Denver. Grandfather of Braunwyn, Courtney and David William. A graduate of the Western, Queens and Toronto Universities, his lifetime was dedicated to educating. Born in Stratford, Ontario, brother of David Simpson, Mayor of Stratford, one of his first educational tasks was to ensure his entrepreneurial brother understood the educational significance of William Shakespeare so that he would sponsor the proposed festival for their hometown. From his first teaching assignment during the depression in Savant Lake, north of Superior in a one room school house teaching grades 1 to 13 through progressive promotions to principal, public school inspector and leadership positions, helping to build Ontario's great public education system in the 50's and 60's, to supervisor of DND schools in Europe ending with Directorships of Indian and Northern Education for the Federal Government, he never forgot his base. His innovative approaches, pragmatism, undaunted drive and concern for accessibility and equality were hallmarks of his career. A pioneer of Canada Student Loans, Cooperative Education, Comprehensive Schools, Local Control for Indian bands and international cooperation through Circumpolar Conferences were some of the achievements that led to his induction as a lifetime member of the Canadian Education Association. His northern base included hockey, both playing and coaching in small town northern communities where his teams won championships and two of his NHL players were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He interrupted his educational career concerned about incursions by Hitler and chose to fight for liberty as an older volunteer enlistee during WW II. He topped his navigation class but chose active duty over a teaching/training role. Flight Lieutenant Simpson flew 33 perilous missions over Nazi Germany winning several medals and citations (chronicled in several publications) for bravery and courage including a DFC for the famed Duisberg mission. On retirement he travelled much of the world he hadn't seen while dedicating his time at home to community spirited activities in Ottawa including being chairman of the Council on Aging, and the Senior Citizens Council, a patron of the Ottawa Symphony and Opera Lyra and an elder of Rideau Park United Church not forgetting to keep fit by skating on the Rideau Canal in the winter, and biking on the parkways in sumêmer. Singing in the CBC Senior Citizens production entitled, "You Gotta Have Heart" epitomized his lifetime attitude. Just prior to succumbing to Alzheimers in his 85th year he completed an interesting 143-page autobiography chronicling his days in education, war and pride in his family for reference for future generations. His good attitude and sense of humour in battling this degenerative disease and adapting to his new reality at each stage of this progressive disease demonstrate that quality of life can be maintained to the end. Special thanks to staff at Rothwell and Perley-Rideau R2S who made this uncharted voyage so doable and rewarding. A Memorial Service will be held at Rideau Park United Church, 2203 Alta Vista Drive on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations to Perley-Rideau R2S Veterans (Health Center), Alzheimer Society or Mission and Service United Church of Canada would be appreciated.

DUPUIS, Laurent On Friday, January 31st, 2003 Mr. Laurent Dupuis of Dapp, Alberta passed away at the age of 77 years. FAUBERT, Alphonse Peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (St. Joseph's Campus) Alphonse Faubert of Pain Court, husband of the late Bernadine (Emery) (1998). Born in Dover Township in 1922, son of the late Alida (Quenneville) and Calixte Faubert, he farmed all his life in Dover and was a member of le club de l'amitie in Pain Court. ARMAND CLAUDE NAULT December 5, 1921-January 30, 2003 After a lengthy battle with cancer, Armand died peacefully on January 30, 2003 at the Health Sciences Centre. He was predeceased by his parents. Left to mourn him are his two caring and loving friends, Anna and Emile, as well as friends from the apartment block where he had resided. PHILIPP PIERRE ST. GERMAIN Peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at the age of 82 years. Philipp was raised in Winnipeg and worked for many years in California for Oscar Meyer. He returned home in early 1973 after the death of his father to live with his mother on Downing Street. He enjoyed fraternizing with his friends, Bill McRae and Dunny Dewar and at the Corydon Towers with his friends, Ernie and Myrtle Geske. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 4 at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., Aubrey Street entrance. Nurse at the Montreal General Hospital and wife of the late Charles Donald Lord, mother of three, potter, weaver, gardener, and friend to many in her native Montreal, adopted home of Knowlton, Quebec, and sumêmer home at Duhamel, Quebec. Daughter of the late John Claude Armour and Lillian Maude Wilshire, she will be sadly missed by her friends and family. She leaves behind her children: Peter Armour Lord of Ottawa; Alyson Wilshire Lord of Montreal, David Armour Lord of Ottawa; and her grandchildren Mathieu, Adam, and Elizabeth. She is also fondly remembered by Madelaine Drohan, Mireille Langlois, Angel Borrens, Scott Armour and Chantal Souligny. She will be interred in a private ceremony at Mount Royal Cemetery. A memorial service for family and friends will be held in Knowlton, Que., in the spring. DOUCET, Marie Hélène-92, Antigonish, passed away January 30, 2003, in the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. Born in St. Joseph Du Moine, she was a daughter of the late Emilien and Catherine (Aucoin) Chiasson. She was the last surviving member of her imêmediate family, having been predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Joseph (November 2002); sisters, Denise, Thérèse and Sabine (LeBlanc); brothers, Clifford, Amedé, Eddie and Philias. She is survived by sons, Roger (Mona Aaltonen), South Hadley, Mass.; Richard (Betty), Lyons Brook; Alfred (Joan MacKinnon), Halifax; daughter, Bernice (Ray Pearce), Halifax; grandchildren, Brian, Russell, Richarda, Christine, Angela (Parr), Timothy, Mathieu, Emily and Susan Doucet, Dawn and Richard Pearce; great-granddaughter, Sarah Doucet. Marie worked as a domestic and waitress in Sydney and Halifax prior to her marriage in 1943. She moved from Margaree Forks to Antigonish in 1954 with her husband and four children. She became an active participant in the life of her church and community. She was a member of St. Ninian's Catholic Women's League, the Ladies Auxiliary of both Arras Branch 59, Royal Canadian Legion and the Marian Boys' Choir. She was a long-time volunteer at the Antigonish Jail for which she received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Nova Scotia Attorney General. She and her husband operated a Bed and Breakfast where her warm hospitality and excellent cooking were much appreciated and through which long lasting friendships were developed. She will be remembered as a gifted seamstress, wonderful cook and a kind, loving and generous mother, grandmother and friend. Always ready with a kind word, a favour, or a pot of soup, she was loyal, faithful and gave from the heart. Her strong faith was reflected in how she lived her life. Marie spent the last two years of her life in the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home where she received excellent care. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish. Funeral service will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. Ninian's Cathedral, Rev. Ray Huntley officiating. DOUCETTE, Louis Joseph-74, Springhaven, Yarmouth Co., passed away Thursday, January 30, 2003, in Yarmouth. Born December 12, 1928, in Springhaven, he was a son of the late Louis Arthur and Sylvia Ann (Muise) Doucette. He was a carpenter. As a young man, Louis served for a brief time with the Canadian Army. Louis was an avid crib player, having won many trophies. He was also an avid pool player, and he loved to fish. Surviving are his former wife, Yvonne Veronica (Muise) Doucette; children, Linda (Bill) Sisco, Yarmouth; Ron (Ellen) Doucette, Rockville; Della (Kevin) McCullum, Bill (Bonnie) Doucette, Rena (Sandy) McCall, all of Yarmouth; Pastor Allen (Wanda) Doucette, Saint John, N.B.; Marilee (Pastor Jeff) Cleveland, St. Stephen, N.B.; Michael (Karen) Doucette, Woodstock, N.B.; brother, Walter (Sylvia) Doucette, Springhaven; sister, Eda (Ulysses) Melanson, Springhaven; 25 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Clarence, Laurie, and a brother in infancy. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, followed by the funeral at 2 p.m. Monday, February 3, all in H.M. Huskilon's Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert St., Yarmouth, Pastor Orel Stuart officiating. Interment will follow in Saint Agnes Parish Cemetery, Quinan. Predeceased by John James Dutton (Jim), her husband of 49 years. Lovingly remembered by daughters, Wendy and Pamela, son-in-law Ken Chang, grandchildren Laura and Alex, friends and family. An active volunteer and leader, Elsie was honoured by the city of Peterborough and the Arthritis Society of Nova Scotia and Ontario for her volunteer work.
