Mrs. Jean Peers, of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Mr. Albert Peers passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2002 at the age of 76 years. Jean leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Barry (Terry) Peers of Ottawa, ON, Mark (Kym Tyson) Peers of Chemainus, BC and Glen (Janice) Peers pf Banff, AB; three grandchildren, Daniel, Shane and Jessica; two brothers, Melvin (Doris) Smith of Montreal and Clarence (Irene) Smith of Ontario; and one sister, Kathleen (Mel) Rayson of Montreal; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Albert; her parents, Howard and Jessica Smith; three brothers, William Smith, Clayton "Buddy" Smith and Howard Smith; and one sister, Norma Grace Smith. Jean was born on September 20, 1925 in Calumet, Quebec. She grew up and went to school in this rural area of Quebec and then left for Montreal as a young adult where she worked as a sales clerk in a large department store. Jean met Albert after his time in the navy and they were wed shortly after the war. A young family was soon to follow and after a second son, they decided that the suburbs of the south shore of Montreal was the place to complete their family. Life was full with three young boys, a new neighborhood and the natural environment not far from the back door. Jean was always a voracious reader, loved to square dance and later in life discovered a talent for stain glass artistry. A love of western Canada was shared with Albert and upon his passing she moved to British Columbia and eventually to Medicine Hat to be closer to family and friends. DANIEL FRANCIS LEROY SHEPPARD Daniel Francis Leroy Sheppard, better known as Roy, passed away unexpectedly March 13, 2002 at the Midland General Hospital while recovering from surgery. His granddaughter, Dawn-Marie, and great-granddaughter, Regan, were beside him. Roy was born to Francis and Bridget Catherine (O’Leary) Sheppard in Toronto, Ont. on Feb. 22, 1921. At the age of 20, he enlisted with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Toronto and landed at Bemieres-sur-Mer on D-Day. His tour of duty took him through Normandy, Belgium, and culminated with the liberation of Holland. Upon returning to civilian life, Roy became an O.P.P. officer with the Barrie detachment on June 5, 1951. During his career, he also would serve at the Port Credit, Britt, Bala, Parry Sound, and Emo detachments. He retired from the O.P.P. (Emo detachment) on Oct. 31, 1983 with 32 years of service and the rank of corporal. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Rose Summers on March 27, 1958 in Toronto, Ont. While they lived in Toronto and Parry Sound initially, Roy and Ev would call Emo home for most of their married life. The family enjoyed summers at their cabin on Rainy Lake and outdoor recreation of fishing, and deer and moose hunting. Roy was always busy with the latest home renovation or garden project that Ev would inspire. While Roy was travelling home from a visit with his mother in Toronto, he met his second wife, Marjorie Willet. They were married Nov. 11, 1989 at her Midland, Ont. home. After living in Emo a short time, the couple would make their home in Midland. Their hobby gardening there would lead to varied plantings of fruit trees, flowers, and grape vines. Roy’s sense of humour will truly be missed. He had a steady supply of jokes or humorous stories, and was always ready to pull pranks on family, friends, and colleagues. Even in recounting family and war stories, he would be sure to include tales of humour or irony. There were times when Roy’s love of debate often would lead him to provoke family and friends into verbal sparring matches. His choice of reading reflected his life—accounts of war, crime stories, or the “rough justice” of westerns. Roy was a life-long member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Upon his retirement, Roy’s desire to travel would take him to Mexico, P.E.I., and the southwestern United States, particularly the “Old West Towns.” Roy was predeceased by his wives, Evelyn and Marjorie; parents, Frank and Catherine; sisters, Ruth Alward and Helen Dolores Sheppard; granddaughter, Evelyn; and grandson, Barry Rogers. He will be sadly missed by his family, sons, Cameron (Dusty) and his wife, Donna, Vincent and his wife, Shirley, and Frank and his wife, Diane; grandchildren, Jeannie, Michael and his wife, Melanie, Dawn-Marie and her husband, Andrew Danylchuk, Lance and his wife, Susan, Daniel, Jonathan, Kirsten, Robert, Breanna, and Rebecca; and great-grandchildren, Erika and Victoria Sheppard, and Regan Danylchuk. Internment will take place at the Emo Municipal Cemetery, with a graveside service for family members. In memoriam donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

ANSON BOSHKAYKIN Anson Boshkaykin, 90, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at his residence Sunday, March 31, 2002. He was born March 15, 1912 in Turtle River, Ont. Anson had lived most of his life in Seine River. He had worked as a trapper, guide, and also was a pulpcutter. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a good provider to his family. Anson is survived by his children, Rose Marie Allen of Bears Pass and Calvin Boshkaykin of Seine River First Nation; and step-children, Clifford Boshkaykin and Mary Boshkaykin, both of Seine River First Nation. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; brother, Jim Boshkaykin of Seine River First Nation; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy; his second wife, Marlene; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Boshkaykin; brothers, Kesance and Pete; and sisters, Elizabeth, Bessie, and Mary. A traditional service was held Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the Seine River First Nation Band Hall. Interment took place in the Seine River First Nation Cemetery. A wake was held Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at the Seine River First Nation Band Hall. In memoriam donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

WILFRED FRANCIS LOCKMAN The family of Wilfred F. Lockman sorrowfully announce his passing on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 in Winnipeg, Man. following a brief illness. Wilf was born Sept. 18, 1923 in Hillsburg Municipality, Man. But at an early age, he moved with his family to a farm north of La Vallee, Ont. At age 18, he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces, serving in Europe from 1942 until his discharge in 1945. Upon his return to Canada, Wilf worked as a logger for several years prior to his employment at the paper mill in Fort Frances as a member of the Firemen and Oilers Union. He retired in 1987. Wilf was an avid fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed spending many hours at his favourite fishing holes and blueberry patches. He took great pride in his yard and vegetable garden. During the winter months, Wilf was an enthusiastic armchair sports fan, and enjoyed playing cribbage and canasta with his family and friends. Wilf was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29, where he spent many enjoyable hours with his buddies. Wilf was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and William Lockman; and brothers, Don and Herb. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Eleanor; and his three children, Ken (Diane) Tetreault, Eleanor (Wayne) Barron, and Frank Lockman (and fiancée, Traci). He also will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Mandy L’Heureux and fiancé, Ron, and Kathryn, Angela, Joanna, Lisa, David, and Mark Barron; great-granddaughter, Courtney L’Heureux; and Traci’s children, Jordan and Jasmine Nastiuk. He also leaves behind his five step-children, Wendy, Cheryl, Duane, Jocelyn, and Lennie; and their children, Aaron, Stephen, Nathan, River, Ashley, Jessica, and Honor. Wilf also is survived by three brothers, Ken (Agnes), Norman (Millie), and Allan (Carmen); sister, Edith (Arvid) Soderholm; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was a special uncle to his nephew, Alvin Haner, and his niece, Loretta Allan. A memorial service was held Monday, April 1, 2002 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Fort Frances, Ont. Pastor Tony Geense officiated. Honourary pallbearers were all of Wilf’s friends. Daughter of the late George and Violet Mayville. Dear mother of Louise (Serge), Donna (Jeffrey), Steven (Carrie) and Natalie (Roger) all of Ottawa. Also survived by seven grandchildren; Nicholas, Daniel, Taylor, Mitchell, Jessica, Renee, Julia. Dear sister of Frank Mayville, Claudia Rouleau, Michael Mayville. Predeceased by brothers Laurence and Patrick Mayville and sister Mary-Ellen Pilon. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel (400 St. Laurent Blvd., Ottawa). Interment at Notre Dame Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will follow the interment at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Aged 80 years of Chatham, passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, March 30, 2002. Surviving is his loving wife of 51 years Bernice (McKeon); one daughter Brenda Desharnais (Pierre) of Ottawa, On; two sons; Gary Godfree (Brenda) of Chatham and Kevin Godfree (Vanda) of Brantford. Four grandchildren Christine and Angela Desharnais of Ottawa; Eric and Nathan Godfree of Brantford; one sister Betty Bishop and husband Bill of Chatham; one brother Jack Godfree and wife Marjorie of Nipissing, On. He is predeceased by his brother William A. Godfree Jr. (1998) and his wife Margaret Catherine (Munn) (1986). Kenneth was a co-owner of Godfree's Men's Wear, and a veteran of World War II. He enjoyed golfing and fishing in his retirement years. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home, 156 William Street S. Chatham from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2002. Peacefully at Riverpark Place in Ottawa on Sunday, March 31, 2002 Aileen (Popplewell) Thornbury in her 91st year. (Former co-owner of Thornbury Drug Store, Perth). Predeceased by her husband T. Arthur Thornbury in 1995. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her son Ron and daughter-in-law Denise Vallely, her daughter Margaret-Anne and son-in-law Ron Clough and her grandchildren, Adam and Kendra-Laine Clough. The family would like to thank the staff and her friends at Riverpark Place for the excellent care and friendship extended to her during her stay. We would especially like to acknowledge all of mom's wonderful neighbours, friends and relatives in Perth for the years of kindness and support shown her; to Dr. Derek Tyrrell for his care and compassion over many years to both Aileen and Arthur and to the congregation at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, where Art and Aileen were long-time members.
