On 28 March 2002 at the Ottawa General Hospital, aged 81, after a brief battle with cancer. Survived by his sisters Marjorie Hodgson (Ottawa) and Pauline Allen (Hillsburgh, Ontario), by his four children Gillian Lane-Mercier (Montreal), Stuart Lane (Ottawa), Andrew Lane (Saskatoon) and Alexandra Lane (Ottawa), and by grandchildren Astrid and Elizabeth Mercier (Montreal) and Michelle Lane (Saskatoon). Also survived by his former spouse Willa (MacKinnon) Lane of Vancouver. Predeceased by his brother Stuart Lane (RCNVR, d. 1942). George was born in Vancouver BC in 1920, the son of William Stuart Lane and Pauline Harrison (Clarke) Lane. He attended Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario, did his war effort at the Polymar plant in Sarnia, Ontario, and subsequently enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia. George was called to the bar of the Law Society of British Columbia in 1948 and practised as a partner in the firm Guild, Yule and Company in Vancouver until his retirement in 1991. Much of his practice focused on mining and he was particularly proud of his strong relationship with Japanese companies investing in British Columbia. George spent his summers as a child at Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island and as an adult on Savary Island in the Strait of Georgia. He was an avid gardener and a very devoted father. He moved from Vancouver to Ottawa in 1995 to be closer to his children and sisters. Many thanks to the staff and residents of the Palisades Retirement Residence in Ottawa for making his last two years so enriched. A private family ceremony is to be held in Ottawa. (nee Heims) Passed away suddenly March 31, 2002 after a brief illness. Janet was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Muriel Heims, and her loving husband John Howard Baker. She is survived by her four children: Mark (Ruth), Susan, Andrew and James Baker, and by her 7 grandchildren: Krista, Megan, Madeline, Hannah-Mae, Graham, Jack and Hayley. Janet devoted her life to her family and friends. Born in England in 1932, Janet first came to Canada as a war-guest in 1940 until 1944 when she was reunited with her parents. She returned to Canada in 1954 with her husband John. Despite dealing with multiple sclerosis for 30 years she remained actively involved in her community and her children's and grandchildren's lives. Her sense of humour and zest for life were appreciated by many. She will be sadly missed by all those whose lives she touched. Battle: MR. JOHN W. BATTLE of Red Deer, Alberta passed away at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Center on Monday, March 18, 2002 at the age of 88 years. John was the eldest son born to John and Faye Battle on September 23, 1913 in Delia, Alberta. He attended school in the Delia area and completed grade 8 before quitting school to help his father on the family farm. A few years later, John met and was later united in marriage to Wilma Julson on October 28, 1939. In 1940, they were blessed with their first child, Russell Gary. John and Wilma farmed together in the Delia District until the spring of 1941, at which time, John enlisted in the army. He spent four years serving his country during W.W. II, returning home on September 23, 1945. John and Wilma purchased the family farm from John's father in 1946, through the Department of Veterans Affairs. The young family grew, as Diana Gail was born in 1947, and Sandra Irene followed in 1952. The family was finally complete with the birth of David John in 1956, and Elizabeth Lynn in 1964. In March of 1969, John left farming due to his health and moved with his family to Crossfield, Alberta, where he worked as a Commissionaire at various locations. In 1972, the family moved to Nanaimo, B.C. for a few years, where John was employed as a carpenter. The family returned to Alberta in 1975, and settled in Red Deer, where he was employed as a security guard at a number of locations, including the Red Deer Hospital. Upon their retirement in 1987, John and Wilma moved to Drumheller, where they enjoyed many years together in a senior's housing complex. In 1996, they returned to Red Deer where they have resided until the present time. John was a wonderful person who will be sadly missed ... his memory always treasured by his many family and friends. John will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Wilma; one son, Dave of Red Deer; three daughters, Diana Battle (Garren) of Red Deer; Sandra (Jim) Zielke of Grande Cache; and Liz Battle of Red Deer; as well as 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He will also be lovingly rmembered by two brothers; Fred Battle of Calgary and Jim Battle of Delia; three sisters, Irene Parry of Ottawa, Ontario; Louise Kathrens of Edmonton; and Margaret Rose Best of Calgary; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. John was predeceased by his son, Russell; two grandsons, Gary and Thomas and two brothers, Robert and Thomas. Memorial Services will be held at the Delia United Church, Delia, Alberta on Thursday, March 21, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Glenn Jarvis officiating. Internment of Cremated Remains will follow in the Delia Cemetary, Delia. Wade: Mollie Kristin Wade (nee Nelson). Born in Rosedale, Mollie was a lifetime resident of the Drumheller Valley until her death at home on March 14, 2002 in Drumheller. After completing teachers training at Normal School in Calgary she had a fulfilling career teaching in Drumheller, East Coulee and Three Hills. On July 1, 1947 she married Walter Brooke Wade. A defining moment in Mollie's life was the early death of her husband Walter who passed away September 25, 1958 at the age of 35. At that time, as single mother of two young boys she stepped in to run the thriving jewellery business that had been founded by Walter and continues today under the stewardship of Walter's brother Bernard and his family. Mollie's generosity and commitment to service lead her to volunteer her time to support a variety of local charities, youth and community groups. An example of this was her participation in the executive of the minor baseball association in Drumheller for over 30 years as secretary and treasurer. She was an active and devoted member of the congregation of St. Magloire's Anglican Church and the Drumheller chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star Mollie is deeply missed by her sons, Brooke and Eric Wade, brothers Eric and Ralph Nelson, sister Ruth Hanson, grandson Robert Wade, granddaughter Isabel Wade and by her granddaughter Kristin, husband Kevin and great grandson Aiden Michael Thygesen born February 24, 2002. In addition Mollie is survived by a number of brothers and sisters in-law and many nieces and nephews. The family is very appreciative of the special efforts of Jean Kelly, Anita Adams, Dr. Racz and of the team from Helping Hands who with the support of the Home Care group of the local health care unit made it possible for Mom to spend her last days at home. We would also like to thank the nurses and staff of Drumheller Hospital for their compassion and professionalism during her time in hospital. GAREAU, P. Marcel, s.j. 1916 - 2002 À Lafontaine (Saint-Jérôme), le 25 mars 2002, est décédé, à l'âge de 86 ans, le père Marcel Gareau. Né à Montréal, le 12 février 1916, il entra chez les Jésuites en 1934 et fut ordonné prêtre en 1947. D'abord professeur de grec aux étudiants jésuites (41-44; 48-50), il partit pour l'Ethiopie en 1951 où il restera pendant 27 ans: professeur, préfet des études à Tafari Makonnen School et supérieur de la communauté. Il fut ensuite secrétaire de l'Assistance d'Afrique à Rome (78-92). De retour en Afrique en 1992, il fut, entre autres fonctions, archiviste des Jésuites de l'Afrique de l'Est. Il revint au Canada à l'été 2000. Outre ses confrères jésuites, il laisse dans le deuil sa belle-soeur Madeleine Bousquet, ses nièces, Lise et Francine Audette, Lydie Gareau, ses neveux, Pierre Audette et Eric Gareau, les conjoint(e)s, de nombreux petit(e)s-neveux/nièces et amis. Clark: Sharon Ramona Clark (nee McDermand) went home to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ after a courageous battle with cancer on March 14, 2002 at the age of 54 years old. Sharon will be deeply missed and forever remembered by Larry, her husband of 34 years; her children Sharilee Clark and Paula Pietrobono (Darren) and granddaughter Kayla. Sharon is also survived by her parents Roy and Alexie McDermand; sisters Dale Clark and Nola McDermand; brother Steve McDermand (Ruth); as well and many other numerous family and friends. Sharon was born in Lacombe, Alberta on April 12, 1947, and lived in many communities including Alix, Drumheller, Strathmore, Standard, Calgary, and Acme. Sharon lived each day to the fullest, and always saw the beauty in everything. She was absolutely the most wonderful mom in the world. Her love for the Lord Jesus Christ was evident in all that she did: being a wife, mom, friend, artist, and writer. Diachuk: Mrs. Irene Diachuk of Drumheller, Alberta passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2002 at the age of 98. Irene was born in Beleluye, Ukraine in 1903. She was known for her flashing sparkling eyes and for always smiling. Irene went through life always happy. She was predeceased by her husband William Diachuk in 1974, and her son Marshall Diachuk in 1999. She is survived by her niece Rose Leonard of Abbotsford, BC. Funeral Services will be held at Courtney-Winter's Funeral Chapel on Wednesday March 20, 2002 at 1:00 P.M. with Father Dan Stevenot officiating. Interment will follow in the Drumheller Cemetery. Sibbald: Charles Ernest Sibbald was born in Oyen, Alberta in 1917 - 4th son of Orman and Margaret Sibbald. He was raised in Munson, Alberta, joined the C.N.R. in 1941, and was in their employment for 37 years, serving in many communities throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan. His last job was Station Agent in Drumheller, and he retired in Munson. He spent 4 years in the Signal Corp in WWII, mostly in England and Europe. He leaves his wife Pearl of 62 years, one daughter, Ann VanLoon, one son Charles, daughter-in-law Millie, and two grandsons, Ryan and Andrew Sibbald of Leduc, Alberta. Two brothers Perce Sibbald of Drumheller and George (Jean) Sibbald of Saskatoon. Predeceased by his mother and father - Orman and Margaret, brothers, Orman and Ken. VALCOURT (Desroches), Suzanne 1945 - 2002 À Blainville, le 29 mars 2002, à l’âge de 56 ans, est décédée Mme Suzanne Desroches, épouse de M. Gérard Valcourt. Outre son époux, elle laisse dans le deuil ses enfants Eric (Cindy Tremblay) et François (Chantal Desrochers), son frère et ses quatre soeurs, plusieurs beaux-frères, belles-soeurs, neveux, nièces ainsi que d’autres parents et amis. BOURGUIGNON, Laurent 1933 - 2002 Laurent Bourguignon est décédé le jeudi 28 mars 2002 à son domicile, comme il le souhaitait, soutenu par sa conjointe Lise Payette. Son décès crée un vide immense aussi pour ses enfants François, Daniel, Nathalie et Patrice Bourguignon, ainsi que pour Daniel, Dominique et Sylvie Payette. Il laisse également dans le deuil leurs conjointes et conjoints. Il était aussi le papie adoré d’Annick et Alexane Bourguignon et de Flavie Payette Renouf. Sa bonté et son amour de la vie lui ont valu l’affection de tous mais particulièrement celle de ses frères et de ses nombreux amis et amies. Que tous ceux et celles de la famille, des amis, des professionnels au grand coeur qui ont permis à Laurent de s’éteindre paisiblement soient remerciés. Notamment Dr Michel Lemoyne et le personnel du 6e étage de l’hôpital St-Luc ainsi que ceux et celles du CLSC de Verdun dont Dr Geneviève Dechêne et Danielle Déry, le personnel de l’Ordre de Victoria dont Marie-Claude Mainville, ainsi que Fidel Lope et Gloria Chavarria. Tous ceux et celles qui l’ont aimé, qui ont partagé son amour de la vie, de la bonne chère, des bons vins, de la musique et des chevaux sont invités. CLÉROUX, Dominique À Outremont, le 26 mars 2002, à l'âge de 41 ans, est décédé subitement Dominique Cléroux, rédacteur et collaborateur au magazine Son & Image. Il laisse dans le deuil son frère Alain (Michèle Corneau), son oncle et sa tante Serge et José Boucher ainsi que de nombreux parents et amis. La famille recevra les condoléances, en présence des cendres, à la Résidence Alfred Dallaire inc. 1111, avenue Laurier Ouest Outremont le lundi 1er avril de 14 à 21 h. Dickson: CATHERINE (CATHY) ANN DICKSON passed away suddenly in hospital in Drumheller on Monday, March 11, 2002 at the age of 54 years. Cathy was born in Fort Macleod, Alberta on July 25, 1947 to Margaret and Grant Burrows. She attended school in Fort Macleod until Grade 10. Cathy married Wayne Dickson on August 29, 1964. Years after they were married, they moved to Nelson, B.C. where she was a part of the mixed bowling league, which she missed after they moved. They then moved to Golden, B.C. where she worked at the Golden Drug Mart, Saan Store and Evans Products. Cathy and Wayne had three daughters; Shannon (Steven) Doyle, Sandi (Mike) Zam and Noreen (Tim) Eagleson. Cathy moved back to Fort Macleod in 1979 and worked at Crestbrook Forest Industries until 1986. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary for a number of years. Cathy loved the spring, so she could be out puttering in her garden and planting flowers and she also enjoyed the summer, just to be outside. Cathy moved to Lethbridge in 1989 and helped attend an 80 suite apartment complex until she moved to Drumheller with her fiance Fred Schwarz in 1998. Cathy and Fred had recently set a wedding date for July 26, 2002. Cathy loved her seven grandchildren and she focused her love into great relationships with them all. Cathy was predeceased by an infant daughter Bonnie Jolaine; her parents Grant and Margaret Burrows; her brother Vern and by her in-laws: Al and Betty Dickson, Vera and Ed Ritson and Fritz Schwarz. Cathy is survived by her three children: Shannon, Sandi and Noreen; her sister Sylvia; her fiance Fred Schwarz and four step children. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Ryan, Jessica, Aaron, Matthew, Josh, Jason and Miranda; three step granddaughters , three step great grandchildren, her mother in-law Monica Schwarz and also by numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Eden's Funeral Home, Fort Macleod on Friday, March 15, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. with Jack Cullen officiating. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made in Cathy's memory to S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance, 1441 Aviation Park NE, Box 570, Calgary, Ab.
