Peacefully on March 27, 2002. She was the youngest child of the late Henry and Susan Cheasley of Dartford, England and Montreal, and much loved adopted daughter of the late Archibald and Madeleine Waters of Montreal. Olive was predeceased by husband Royden in 1996 and is survived by step-daughter Dorothey Dellandrea of Bowmanville, Ontario and by numerous much loved nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces. She was educated in Montreal and was an Associate of the London (England) College of Music. During WW II she served as Principal Secretary to the Minister of Finance, the Minister of National Defense and finally to General the Honourable A.G.L. McNaughton, Minister of National Defense (1944-45). In 1945 she was invited to join the newly formed Department of National Health and Welfare as Departmental Secretary, the only woman in Canada at that time to occupy such a post. She was a charter member of the Women's Committees of the Repertory theatre and of the Choral Union, both of Ottawa as well as an active member of the Ottawa Branch of Zonta International. Olive has been an active member of the Baptist Church in Montreal and Ottawa, the United Church in Perth, Ontario as well as Cadboro Bay United Church in Victoria. In 1965 she resigned from the Federal Civil Service and married Royden Cecil Kirkham of Perth and Ottawa at the Riverside Church in New York. After traveling overseas for three years, they established their summer home in Perth and their winter home in Florida enjoying both for over twenty years. They moved to Victoria in 1992. Suddenly at his home in Barrie, Ontario, on Monday, April 1, 2002, William Jay Hitchins, in his 55th year. Jay leaves his beloved wife, Mary Frances; their sons Thomas Chadwick and Joseph Arthur Hitchins, both of Smiths Falls and his buddy Shaxi. He was born April 21, 1947, the son of Dorothy Hitchins of Smiths Falls and the late Arthur Hitchins. He is also survived by his brother Lee (Barbara), nieces and nephews, Bev Hitchins, Jodi Drummond, Kyana Hitchins, Adam Cousins and their families, and extended family members Alan Walker (Joan), Bill Hitchins (Nancy) and Cindy Hitchins (Ray). He was intensely devoted to his friends, to his colleagues at work and to his family, above all to his wife, sons and mother. The room always lit up when he walked in and glowed long after he left. HOWARD RAYMOND REESMAN Howard Reesman passed away peacefully in Calgary, Alta. on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at the age of 94 years at the Father Lacombe Nursing Home. He was predeceased by his wife, Bea (Lottie Beatrice), nee Hutchings; two brothers, Homer and Harold; and sister, Reba. Born in Kirksville, Mo., Howard grew up in southern Illinois, where his father, Burthel Reesman, was a doctor of osteopathy and his mother was a teacher. After attending Milliken University and graduating from Eureka College, Howard studied for and received a Master’s of Fine Arts degree from the Chicago Art Institute. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in North Africa and Italy. On his return, Howard, an avid outdoors and backwoodsman, made a solo canoe trip to Northwestern Ontario, where he met Bea, his future wife, whose parents, Herbert and Lottie Hutchings, operated Pioneer Lodge, a tourist camp on Rainy Lake, Ont. After the birth of two daughters, Penny and Sally, the family moved to Oak Park, Ill., near Chicago, where they lived until the girls graduated from high school and university. Howard worked as an illustrator, and later retired as a teacher in the Chicago school system. An accomplished artist, Howard painted in both oil and watercolour. He also produced many fine hand-crafted violins, viola de gambas, guitars, and a cello. Other construction included model and full-sized canoes, rowboats, Kentucky long rifles, and a few cabins, including one on his island on Rainy Lake. Howard and Bea retired to Fort Frances, Ont. and were active in escapades on Rainy Lake in all seasons. They moved to Calgary in the late ’80s to stay with their daughters. After Bea passed away in 1991, Howard remained in Calgary, attending art workshops, and visiting Rainy Lake and the Cascades with his daughter and son-in-law, Frank Colton. Howard will be remembered fondly by all his friends and his daughters, Penny and Sally; sons-in-law, Frank Colton and Izmeth Sideek; sister-in-law, Mary Reesman of Eureka, Ill.; nephews, Dick Reesman, Lee Reesman, and Kevin Randall; and all his remaining family. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 8, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Knox United Church in Fort Frances, Ont. Rev. Marietta Marshall will officiate, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances. Died on April 2, 2002, in Ottawa General Hospital of emphysema. Ron was born on March 8, 1925 in Timmins, Ontario and at the age of 17 he joined the Canadian Army and Air Force, coming out in 1945 with the rank of Pilot Officer. A Canadian championship wrestler and graduate of the Engineering Physics program at the University of Toronto, he worked for Inco from 1948 until his retirement in 1982. In the first half of his career he played a leading role in Inco's exploration activities. He was the co-inventor of several airborne geophysical devices which led to the discovery of numerous nickel deposits, including the major ore body at Thompson, Manitoba. He moved out of the field and into management in 1962, eventually heading up Inco's exploration department which was active across the globe. From 1973 to 1978, he was president of Inco's Ontario Division, where he directed unprecedented nickel production from the Sudbury operation while initiating major workplace and environmental improvements. An avid fisherman, hunter, skier, gardener and golfer, Ron always balanced work with pleasure. Every summer found Ron and his family at their camp on Long Lake where the steam bath was always hot and the water refreshing. Ron also believed strongly in community service. He was a member of the Board of Governors of Laurentian University for many years, served on the advisory board of the Sudbury YMCA and gave much of his time to ParticipAction, the United Way and other community activities. Ron possessed an indomitable spirit and love of life. His integrity, determination and sense of humour gave him great success in life and left us all with an example for living. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Viola, his six children Stephen, Anne (Barnett), Christopher, David, Valerie (Falcioni) and Cathy (McKinnon), his brothers James, Douglas and Harold, as well as 18 grandchildren, Mark, Michael, Fiona, Stephen, Kathleen, Marie, Arden, Jessica, Lawren, Sandra, Kara, Joseph, Sarah, Katherine, Anna, Francesca, Sarah and Scott. Friends may visit the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road on Thursday, April 4 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Friday, April 5, 2002 at 10 a.m. Donations to the Lung Association would be appreciated. Peacefully in hospital after a courageous battle with cancer, on Thursday, March 28, 2002. Frank, beloved husband of Susan Qingmin and loving father of Charles and Kyna.
