Of Kingston, formerly of Ottawa, ON, died peacefully at home on Saturday March 17, 2001 after a lengthy illness in his 87th year. He was born in Regina and grew up in Vancouver, where he developed a lifelong interest in astronomy. He obtained a Master's degree in Physics at UBC and continued post-graduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1942, he was asked to return to Canada to help with the war effort by developing radar systems at the National Research Council. After WWII, he used radar equipment to investigate cosmic and solar radio noise. He was Canada's pioneer radio astronomer. He had many hobbies including a fondness for rare books. Queen's University has been a recipient of some of his books in the Riche-Covington collection. Predeceased by his only brother, Roy Covington, he is survived by his devoted wife Charlotte after a marriage of nearly 59 years. Also surviving are his four children: Nancy, Eric, Alan and Janet, and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a future date. Peacefully on March 22, 2001 in his eighty-fifth year at the Montreal General Hospital surrounded by his loving family. World War II veteran. Beloved husband and dear friend of Margaret Johnston. Loving father of Karen (Don Martel) and Kim (Jim McCoy). Devoted grandfather of cherished Sarah McCoy. Predeceased by his sister Edna Taylor. Mourned by many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends. Passed away suddenly at home on Thursday evening March 22, 2001. Husband of Cheryl. Father to Justin. Brother to Donna. He will be sadly missed by nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Visitation will be held at Labreche Funeral Home on Sunday from 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Anglican Christ Church of Rawdon on Monday at 11 a.m. Donations to The Heart Association would be appreciated.
