Leone Isabel (Johnson) Baker February 6, 1927 ~ October 14, 2009 Leone is lovingly remembered by her three children, Terry (Nancy) Baker of Denzil, Wendy Baker of Vancouver and Sandy (Doug) Parsons of Saskatoon; grandchildren, Carey (Kristi) and their children, Adam and Emma of Unity, Amy (Tae Won) Shin of Richmond B.C., and Cam (Veronica) and their son Joshua of Regina; as well as her sister, Betty May of Kindersley; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Frank Baker in 2002; young sister, Evelyn Johnson in childhood; sister, Melda (Bill) Hingston in 2002; brother-in-law, Vince May in 2006. Born at home in Kelfield, SK to Henry and Gertrude Johnson, Leone went to school at Kelfield, took her grade 12 at Wilkie, and then completed Normal School in Saskatoon. She taught at Wollerman, Deer Lodge, Primate and Salvador before she married Frank on April 11, 1950 and moved to the Baker family farm at Denzil where she was still living at the time of her death. In the 1960's and 70's Leone returned to teaching, working fulltime, part-time and as a substitute teacher at Denzil Sacred Heart School. She enjoyed teaching and often spoke of her former students with pride and affection. As a passionate reader, her love of literature was an inspiration to her students, friends and family. Leone believed in giving back to her community and volunteered with many organizations over the years, including the Denzil Ladies' Board of Trade, Salvador and Luseland United Church, United Church Women, Order of the Eastern Star, New Democratic Party, Luseland Embroidery Guild, Denzil and Luseland Seniors' Clubs, Luseland Square Dance Club, and the Denzil Discing club. Leone was an active, independent and enthusiastic person who used her considerable energy to benefit her family, friends, and community. She took great pleasure in celebrating the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and did her best to make this world a better place. A service to honor Leone's memory will be held on Friday, October 23, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Denzil Sacred Heart Church, Denzil, Saskatchewan. FINLAY, Sean Ogilvie - 1944-2009 - In the early morning of October 13, 2009, Sean Finlay died peacefully surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Sean Finlay was born in Vancouver, the son of Delbert Finlay and Winifred Wiggins. He followed in his father and grandfather's footsteps, working in the newspaper industry as a journalist and editor for CP and Thompson Newspapers. Sean was the editor of the Arnprior Chronicle, the Kirkland Lake Northern Daily News and the Barrie Examiner where he won several newspaper awards. Sean covered Parliament Hill from 1978 to 1982. He served as Vice-President of the Parliamentary Press Gallery in 1982. From 1982 to 1987, he was the editor of the St. John's Evening Telegram, in St. John's Newfoundland. In 1987, Sean retired from his newspaper career and returned to Ottawa. He formed Wordsmithing Plus, working as an editor, speech writer and public relations consultant. Since 1996, Sean has been employed with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation as the English language editor. Sean will be forever remembered by his wife of 43 years, Jan, his daughter Seana Siobhan, and his “two boys”, grandsons Graham Ogilvie Jones and Sam Jones. Also mourning his loss are mother-in-law Mil Taylor, son-in-law Kris Jones, brother Joel (Carolyn), and nephew Chris. He will be sorely missed by his friends at CMHC and many others. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 24th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hulse Playfair & McGarry at 315 McLeod St. in Ottawa. Hannah and Herbert loved following the musical career of son Robert travelling to many cities and countries. Her many activities and volunteering included Brownies and Girl Guides of Canada as well as the Mississauga Hospital Auxiliary. The family would like to thank the very caring staff of Fudger House. SLEMMONDS Mary Anne Our beloved Mum and Nana died peacefully at Kinsmen Place Lodge (KPL), in Surrey on October 9, 2009. Her daughter Valerie, son-in-law Harry Gray and grandson Malcolm were by her side. Mary was born in Chelsea, London in 1911 and moved to Canada in 1967. Predeceased in December 1993 by her dear husband of 62 years Bill (Wink) Slemmonds, she is survived by her four children, Ray (Sheila), Reg (Anne), Valerie (Harry) and Paul. Mum has many, many grandchildren and adored every one of them. Her days at KPL were very happy, and we thank all the staff who cared so much about her, and for her, especially on the 5th floor. Clara was born in Frontier, Saskatchewan. She took her nurses training in Medicine Hat and came to Vancouver to work at St. Pauls Hospital where she met Dad. Later she worked at Burnaby Hospital. Clara was predeceased by her husband Jim, sisters Sara (Andy), Myrtle (Ken) and Hilda (Bob), nephew Garth. She is survived by her son Les and daughter Doreen Hembree and her grandchildren Graham, Reid, Caitlin and Kori and many nieces and nephews. WHITLOCK Charles "Cecil" Passed away at the age of 91 in Victoria on September 15, 2009, following a stroke. Son of Charles Matthews and Elizabeth Allen Whitlock, Cec was predeceased by the love of his life, Eleanor, and brother David, and is survived by his son Robert, grandchildren Gregg and Kristina and niece Murial (Ron) and nephew Ron (Lori). Cec was born in Muscow, Sask., educated at universities in Sask., Vancouver and Montreal, leading first to a career as a school teacher and principal in Sask. and BC. His final degree was in librarianship, which led to work at the Carnegie Branch of the Vancouver Public Library, where he met his wife of 53 years. In 1962, Dad took on the position of head librarian at Royal Roads Military College, where he worked until his retirement in 1983. He then enjoyed many years working with wood and stained glass at the Juan de Fuca Seniors Centre. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Martin Lane and all the staff on the 6th Floor South Tower of Victoria General Hospital for their kind attention. Thanks to Janet for her care and attention for Dad since Mom died in 2005. No service at Dad's request. Dad and Mom will be joined again. Elle laisse dans le deuil sa soeur Alma (feu Jérôme Saintonge), son frère Alva (Marie Tremblay), les enfants de Gérard (Suzanne et Louise) ainsi que plusieurs neveux et nièces, parents et amis. PALLADINI, Assunta 1921 - 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Assunta Palladini on October 13, 2009. She was the cherished wife of Natale Vani and stepmother of Richard Vani and Rita (Frank Pinto). Loving sister of the late Anatolia, Vincenza and Mario. Devoted sister to Ennia (Frederico Bonifazi) and Annunziata (Americo Napoleoni). She will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews.
