ANDERSON, Les (Gerald Leslie) Born June 26, 1942 in Mannville, AB Les passed away peacefully October 12, 2009 at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital. He loved to spend time surrounded by family and friends, traveling, golfing and working on his '36 Ford Roadster. His zest for life was an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Donna; two sons, Terry (Candy) Anderson of Deroche, BC and Doug Anderson of Edmonton, AB; two daughters, Stacie Coyle of Vernon, BC and Amber Coyle of Kelowna, BC; three grandsons, Christopher Anderson, Jordan Handley and Kaden Anderson; sister Doreen (John) Nott of Innisfree, AB; brothers, Bruce (Bob Fortain) Anderson of Collingwood, ON and Norman (Karen) Anderson of Innisfree, AB; mother-in-law Doreen Armstrong of Edmonton, AB; sisters-in-law, Shirley (Gerald) McEachern of Ferintosh, AB, Sharon Lasychuk and Valerie Arnold of Edmonton, AB; brothers-in-law, Dale Hodge of Penticton, BC, Robert (Nola) Matheson of Stony Plain, AB and Arnie Milne of Edgewood, BC; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and friends. Les was predeceased by his first wife, Ida, sister Lorraine Hodge and sister-in-law Dorothy Milne. A special thank you to his nurses in ICU. HELFRICK George 1932 ~ 2009 George Helfrick passed away peacefully on October 12, 2009 at the Bradley Centre, Chilliwack, BC at the age of 77 years. George was born in Maklin, Sask, and moved with his family to the Peace River country of Alberta at the age of 2. He was the 13th child of a family of 15. As an adult, George was a diamond driller for many years, working in exploration drilling all over BC and the Yukon. George finished his career with Westmin Resources out of Campbell River. He was a happy person and was well-liked by everyone who knew him. George will be sadly missed by his spouse Jeanette, his two step-sons, Gordon and Donald and his three children, David, Darlene and Gordon; his grandchildren, Jasmin, Krystal, Katie, Derek, Wayne, Dennis, Jay, Shaun and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Denzil, Malcolm, Jaida and Jherzey- Lynn; brothers and sisters Adam, Phil, Mona, Marge, Paul, Emily, Vinnie, Leona and Larry. George was predeceased by his parents, George and Geniveve and his brothers, Joe, Pete, Jack and Jerry and sister Minnie. SMART, Margaret Marion(nee Cooper) 2009-10-16 On Thursday, October 15, 2009 Margaret Marion Smart, 90, passed away peacefully with her family at her side three days before her 91st birthday. Margaret will lovingly be remembered by her daughter Marlene Young (Peter) of Calgary, her son Len Smart (Deb) of Thunder Bay, her grandchildren, Jason and Branden of Winnipeg, Amy Lowry (Tyler) of Sioux Lookout, Jeff (fiancé Keeley Hartviksen) of Thunder Bay, great grandchildren Sasha and Miranda, sister-in-law Jean Cooper, brother-in-law Buddy Smart (Nobu) of Thunder Bay and by her great friend and companion Jack Lourie. She was predeceased by her husband Keith on May 15th 1999. Margaret was born in Neepawa, Manitoba, and moved to Fort Frances in 1925 and then to Fort William where she met and married Keith Smart in September 1944. They raised their family on East Brock Street in Westfort and later moved to Maplecrest and eventually to Jasper Place. Margaret and Keith enjoyed their travels to Arizona and Florida where they made many lasting friendships. A funeral service in Memory of Margaret will be held on Monday, October 19 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bert Vancook officiating. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center and the staff at Jasper Place for their loving care of Margaret. BARRY, Patricia Beatrice October 9, 1919 - October 9, 2009 It is with great sadness that the family announces her passing in Vancouver, on her ninetieth birthday, surrounded by her family. She is survived by Wilf, her adoring husband of 70 years, her daughters Joanne and Jane, granddaughters, Jan and Patricia, grandson, Scott, four great-grandchildren and her many much loved nieces and nephews. Patricia will rest in Vancouver, until the day Wilf joins her, and they can be returned together to Edmonton, their lifelong home and the place they loved. HOLMAN, Robert L. July 9, 1921- August 26, 2009 Mr. Bob Holman passed away in Calgary at the age of 88 years. Bob is survived by his son, Robert S. (Dorothy), daughter-in-law, Linda Holman; grandchildren: McKinnis and Katlan Holman, Brandy (Eric) Krenz and Jason (Kerine) Holman; great-grandchildren: Jayleen, Braydon, Erin and Kaelynn; sister, Norma Horsman and brother-in-law, Stuart (Elva) Finlay. Bob was predeceased by his wife, Vera in 2004 and son, Brent in 2007. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Devon Legion Hall with Reverend Audrey Mitchell officiating. Interment of urn to follow in Peace Cemetery, Devon Alta. in the veteran's plots. Bob lived in Devon from the town's creation in 1947 to 2004. Bob and his brother Harvey built and ran the first grocery store in town. Income from the store could not really support two growing families so Bob left the store to Harvey and started a 30 year career with Imperial Oil, first as a battery operator, then as a gas plant technician and finally as a production accountant. Bob's wife Vera was a long time teacher in the Devon Elementary, Junior and High schools. Bob and Vera's, two sons, Brent and Bob Jr. went into the Alberta Radio and Television Arts and the oil industry respectively. KEALTY Tim After a long and courageous battle against cancer, Tim passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, October 14. Predeceased by his father Maurice (2001), brother Brian (1982), and sister Ann (2009), he will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by Judy, his wife of 28 years, his daughters Allison and Meredith, his mother Jean, his brothers Michael (Brenda), Kevin (Debbie), Patrick, and Sean (Caralee), his sister-in-law Donna (Stan), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He will also be fondly remembered by his many friends and coworkers at IBM, and by the countless friends and neighbours he touched with his kindness, generosity, and sense of humour over the years. Born in Verdun, QC, Tim graduated with a BSc in Mathematics from Loyola College (now Concordia University) in 1971. After a year of teaching, Tim joined IBM in Toronto in 1973, and began a career that gave him the opportunity to showcase his talents for marketing and innovation. His many friends and coworkers at IBM were very important to him, and his optimism, mentorship and sense of humour garnered him much respect and admiration from his colleagues. Whether he was working in Toronto, Winnipeg, or finally Vancouver, he made good friends and wonderful memories everywhere he went. His marriage to Judy in 1981 brought him a disco partner, a lifelong love, and two daughters. Tim's daughters were his pride and joy. He was a soccer coach for eight years, and touched the lives of many with his patience and relentless encouragement. Diagnosed with cancer in 2004, Tim never let on how difficult it was to deal with the disease. His doctors and nurses only confirmed what his family and friends have known for years - he had the true fighting Irish spirit. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 18 at Highlands United Church, 100 Edgemont Boulevard, North Vancouver. BEKE, Joanne Louise (nee Brooker) On October 12, 2009, Mrs. Joanne Beke of Edmonton, AB passed away peacefully at the age of 67 years. Joanne was born on July 19, 1942 in Neepawa, Manitoba. After graduating from high school, Joanne entered nursing school at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg, MB graduating with the class of 1964. It was at this hospital she met the love of her life, Gerardus Beke. They were married at St. Vital Catholic Church on November 22, 1964. She was an excellent nurse and caregiver, and was always there to take care of anyone who was ill and needed a helping hand. Joanne is fondly remembered for her artistic talents and love of music; she played the piano and accordion, in bands, with her father (Allen) and brother (Court) up to her young adult years and passed this love of music to her children and grandchildren. She was an extraordinarily wonderful person and she will be greatly missed; our thoughts and prayers are with her. Joanne is survived by her son, John (Naomi); daughter, Tamara Hiatt; six grandchildren, Dustin Hiatt, Clarissa and Alexander Beke and Erica, Brian and Lorelei Roberts; one great-grandchild, Karaline Roberts; as well as her brothers, David (Frances) Brooker of Beulah, MB, Court (Betty) Brooker of Qualicum Beach, BC; aunt, Joan Rothwell of Cochrane, AB; and numerous nephews and nieces. PRICHETT, Frank Peacefully at the age of 96, October 13, 2009. Predeceased by his beloved wife Elsie, his partner and friend for 68 years. Survived by his loving sons Richard (the late Margaret), Terry (Connie) and Barry (Linda). Born in England, Frank brought his young family to Canada, to provide greater opportunities for his sons. Until his retirement in 1980, Frank was a respected civilian scientist for the Department of National Defence, where he was influential in the development of night-vision technology. LEE Selma A. (Mantei) Born June 10, 1929 passed away peacefully September 25, 2009. Selma was born in Vancouver BC and lived her entire life in the Lower Mainland raising her 5 children at the family home at 15th and Camosun and Doncaster Way in Vancouver. Selma made sure her home was the central hub of the neighborhood where everyone was made to feel welcome. She was one of the first employees of Curtis Lumber and was also invaluable to the success of her husband's construction business where she diligently kept the books and anything else that needed to be done. Years later she retired from a mining company and settled in White Rock where she loved looking at the ocean. One of her favourite pastimes was playing Blackjack and she made frequent trips to Reno where she had many memorable times. A lifetime animal lover, she had many pets over the years, mostly strays that she took in when they were in need of a good home. She will be lovingly remembered by her five children Virginia (Glenn), Jacalyn, Brenda (Larry), Mark (Loretta), and Rob (Sherrill), Also her nine grandchildren Brittany, Travis, Taryn, Shea, Koltan, Andrea, Austin, Vanessa and Breanna. The Family would like to thank Fellburn Care Centre for taking such good care of Selma for the past 4 years after she suffered a stroke. In lieu of flowers donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or SPCA would be much appreciated in Selma's memory.
