ROBERT FREDERICK SKINNER Wednesday, 14 October 2009 - 12:13pm Robert F. Skinner, 56, of Winnipeg, Man., passed away suddenly on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009. Robert was born in Fort Frances, Ont. and took his schooling there. He then went on to studies at the University of Manitoba and at Queen’s. During these university years, he worked as a casual Canada Customs summer student and, over time, rose to higher positions in Emerson, Fort Frances, Sarnia, Ottawa headquarters, and finally as a director for the Canada Revenue Agency. Robert was predeceased by his father, Dr. J.H. Skinner. He leaves to mourn his mother, Mrs. G.M. Skinner of Fort Frances, Ont.; two brothers, David of Winnipeg, Man. and Steven (Allison) of Brantford, Ont.; along with his niece, F.M. Mackenzie Skinner. Over the years, Robert built up an impressive array of friends whom he often wined and dined, especially at the cottage on Hostess Island. These events, some of which included the “visit of the Emersonians” and the “Skinner cousins winter adventure,” and every July 1st have left a great many happy memories. Robert was kind, affable, hospitable, and generous to a fault. He was progressive, tolerant, and witty, and he almost never stopped working, except for a bike ride, sauna, or swim. He has a special place in so many hearts, including cousins, colleagues, and many lifelong friends. He lived his life to the full, cruising on the Nile, then on the Queen Mary II, and later to Alaska. He enjoyed life on Rainy Lake in all seasons. He worked hard at the CRA. He took care of the many people who needed him. We cannot believe he is no longer with us. The only words which do justice to his memory are those of the poet, “Frater ave atque vale”—we will surely meet again. Cremation has taken place, with funeral services to be held Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., with reception to follow. A memorial service and interment will take place in Fort Frances in the summer of 2010. MATHER Eulalia Ferreira Resident of Maple Ridge, B.C passed away in Mission on September 7, 2009. Eulalia was born in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. She came to Vancouver in 1978 and married Henry Mather in 1979. For both it was a second marriage. Eulalia is survived by her husband and two sisters in Brazil. She was predeceased by two brothers and four sisters. Eulalia loved music and painting. She was a concert singer and composer of songs and spiritual opera. Her paintings are in Niave style, very vivid and dreamlike. She loved playing volleyball, adored small children and enjoyed dancing and parties. MARINO, Frank ~ was called to join his Saviour, on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at the age of 95. Beloved husband of 71 years to Annamaria (Di'Iurio) Marino. Loving father of Angelo (Gloria) Marino, Josephine (Robert) Petrecca, Vincent Marino and Lydia (Ben) Paterno. Grandpa will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Dear brother of Maria Libera (Mike) D'Elia and brother-in-law of Elsie. Predeceased by granddaughter Lyvia (2005) survived by her husband Guy Spadafora. Also predeceased by 3 brothers and 4 sisters. Frank will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. KENDIG, Joseph (nee Brocato) - Joseph Angelo passed away peacefully on October 8, 2009. He leaves behind the mother of his two children Dalida Kendig, his sons Michael Angelo and Matthew John, his mother Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis (Stalter), his father Joseph John Kendig, his brother Robert Kendig & Pamela. Also his sisters-in-law & brothers- in-law Diane and Dennis Portt, Carolle and Brad Barton, Francine and Warren Merry, Marcella and Denis Lefebvre. He also leaves his god daughters Ashley Barton, Lauren Merry and Alexandria Kendig. Also nieces and nephews Melissa, Courtney, Ashley, Billy, Miranda, Eric, Tanya and Natalie. He was a member of the Southridge Church. Joe volunteered and was very involved in his boys sports with soccer and basketball. He was a coach for house league and travel teams, convener and vice-chair for the MAA Soccer, he coached the Pelham Panthers and CYO basketball teams. Cremation has taken place. DALZIEL (CHISHOLM), Mrs. Olive Emily - Passed into the Hands of her Lord on October 9th, 2009 in Guelph, Ontario, in her ninety-second year. She and her husband Douglas, shared over sixty-two years of happy wedded bliss together. Olive is predeceased by her beloved husband J. Douglas. She is survived by sons Jeremy Dalziel, Port Colborne, ON. and Graham (Maria) Chilliwack, B.C. and daughters Carol (Ronald) Phillips, Guelph, ON. and Daphne Grace (Paul) Rudy of Newmarket, ON. She is the beloved Grandmother of Jordan Phillips, Jason, Melissa and Andrew Dalziel, a sister-in-law, Joan Summers and a brother-in-law Ralph Alton both of Sault Ste. Marie and nephews and nieces. Olive, daughter of the late John Willson and Grace Chisholm, was predeceased by her brothers John and Herman, and sisters Mary and Joyce. Douglas came home on leave from his wartime naval corvette in 1943. They were married in Sault Ste. Marie, and spent the remainder of the war years in Halifax where Douglas was posted ashore. When her youngest child was in Grade 7, Olive re- entered the work force as a medical secretary to the late Wallace twins, Doctors Gerald and Harold Wallace, of North Bay. She retired the year her youngest graduated from university. It was then Olive found her great love and vocation. For 14 years she led as mentor and coach, Ladies' Bible Classes in Elmira and Guelph. Olive was a loving and adoring mother, as her children will attest. In their marriage, Olive and Douglas never let the sun go down upon their wrath. If a misunderstanding had occurred during the day, at bedtime, one said, I'm sorry and the other said, I love you. Her interests were her family and her church. She had an abiding faith in her Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ. Great Is Thy Faithfulness was her favorite hymn. Great Is Thy Faithfulness O God our Father There is no shadow of turning with Thee Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be. HAMILTON April Marion (nee Mulvenna) April was born April 25, 1944 in Mount Pleasant, Ontario, to Nancy and Mike Mulvenna. She was raised in Mount Pleasant, Brantford and Toronto and spent many happy summers at the family island in Lake Temagami. As a young woman, April moved to Vancouver where she met, married and had two beloved children with Nelles Hamilton. April's long and successful working career spanned advertising, social work and several non-profit organizations. In midlife she met Barry Jakel, with whom she spent twenty-one happy years. April loved helping others and volunteering; long walks; good deals; laughter and good company; the performing arts; swimming in lakes and the sea; her garden; her sisters; her girlfriends; and her family. She will be forever remembered by husband Barry; daughter Bre, son-in-law Mark and granddaughter Scarlett; son Reid and daughter-in-law Molly; sisters Maureen (John) and Linda (Ron); mother-in-law Doreen, and by a large and loving circle of extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her mother, father, and grandparents Agnes and Robert Hartley Woodward. April died October 6, 2009 of complications following a brain aneurysm. Her family thanks the staff of Vancouver General Hospital's neurology and intensive care units for their superlative care and compassion. A public memorial will be held (rain or shine) at Spanish Banks Beach in Vancouver at noon, Saturday, October 24, 2009 with a private gathering to follow. Tom was also the beloved friend of Mary Rankin. Tom was very proud of his position as a Captain on many vessels traveling the Great lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. JOHN JIM KELLY Niigaanwe’itang, Owaasisii dotem Wednesday, 14 October 2009 - 12:15pm The family of John Jim Kelly sadly announces his passing on Friday, Oct. 9, 2009 at 10:35 a.m. at the age of 70. He passed away peacefully at the Emo Health Centre in Emo, Ont. with his loving family by his side. True to his character, he rallied courageously against his ailments and illnesses. He was born Thursday, Oct. 13, 1938 at Crow Lake, Ont. to the late Harry and Mary Kelly. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Janice; brothers, Eddie, Jim H., George, and Robert Bobby Kelly; sisters, Victoria and Alice; and in-laws, John, Stanley, Thomas, Joe, and Louise. John Jim is survived by his wife, Catherine, daughters, Yvonne and Thelma (Derek), and grandson, Jessie John, all of the Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation. Also leaving to cherish his loving memory is grandson Sheldon, along with wife, Sarah, and his pride and joy, his two great-grandchildren, Sheldon Jr. and Samantha of Couchiching First Nation. He also is survived by brother, Colin Kelly of Kenora, Ont. and Juanita Jourdain Kelly of Couchiching First Nation; sister, Mary Kelly, and sisters-in-law, Corrine Kelly and Delores Kelly, all of Onigaming First Nation; brother-in-law, Paul Indian (Heather) of Thunder Bay, Ont.; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Indian of Kenora, Ont. and Leslie Cameron of Thunder Bay, Ont. Sadly, John also will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, and friends who all admired this strong-hearted man. He married his loving wife, Catherine, on Nov. 10, 1959. He attended residential school from 1945-55 at St. Mary’s School in Kenora. He spent his life residing in Onigaming, and was employed as a carpenter, guide, trapper, and medical driver. He was a previous band councillor and provided leadership for his community. He believed in people being treated with respect and fairness. Throughout his life, he worked hard commercial fishing, hunting, and trapping to provide a good life for his family. It was important to him to provide for the needs of his family. These are some of the valued teachings and skills he leaves behind. He also enjoyed visiting casinos for entertainment and watching hockey. He was a kind and resolute man who enjoyed time spent with his family and friends. He took special pride in Jessie’s singing and drumming, and Sheldon’s athletic skills and achievements. In his later years, John Jim took special joy in spending time with his great-grandchildren who always brought out that special smile we will always cherish. A wake was held Monday, Oct. 12, 2009 at the Onigaming gymnasium. John Jim was looking forward to being with his family on his birthday of Oct. 13. Keeping with his wishes, family and friends took special attention to share in a celebration of his birthday as part of the funeral services. This includes loved ones who passed on. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009 at noon at the Onigaming gymnasium, with Elder Issac Mandamin officiating. Elder Fred Kelly Sr. provided a moving honourary memorial. Interment took place at the Onigaming Cemetery. The pallbearers were Josh Kelly, Stacey Kelly, David Charlie Kelly, Chris Kelly, Derek Kelly, Doug Kelly, Tyson Kelly, and Brian Indian.
