PHILLIPS, ALAN Alan Ronald Phillips of Osgoode, ON, 67 (born July 27, 1942). His family is sad to announce the sudden passing of their dearly beloved Husband, Father, and Grandpa on Saturday August 22, 2009. Alan will be dearly missed by his devoted wife Beverley Phillips and children Kevin Phillips (Kelly), Karen Granville (Tom), Kelly Gagnier (Matthew). Dear brother of Bob Phillips (Shirley) of B.C., Tom Phillips (Janice). Special brother-in-law to Raymond Morris (Caroline). Cherished uncle of many nieces and nephews. A good friend to a multitude who knew him. At the family's request a memorial service will be held to celebrate his life at Trinity Bible Church of Ottawa, 4101 Stagecoach Rd., Osgoode, ON, 11am Tuesday, August 25, 2009. MARTIN , Gordon Edward September 24, 1962 - August 19, 2009 Gord left us suddenly last Wednesday; so there is a bright star in heaven today. Gord leaves behind his mother Diane, sisters Susan and Laurie (Darren), brothers Bruce and Jamie (Beth), four nephews and two nieces, as well as countless extended family and friends. Gord was a special man who loved everyone and was loved by all. He will be sadly missed and always in our hearts. SHADDOCK , Norman January 24, 1920 - August 22, 2009 Norman, beloved husband of the late Joan Shaddock of Calgary, passed away on August 22, 2009 at the age of 89 years. Norman was born in Belleville, ON, son of Benjamin and Margaret Shaddock (nee Soule). Norman joined the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of eighteen years and met his wife Joan in England during WWII. He moved his family to Calgary in 1945 where he was employed with Chevron Standard for over thirty-five years. Norman was an avid sportsman and conservationist. He was past President of Calgary Fish and Game Association and past Vice-President of the Alberta Fish and Game Association. He is remembered by daughters Margaret (Bradley) Block, Valerie (Ron) Bons and son Ron (Peggy) Shaddock; grandchildren Bill and Trevor Block, Scott, Michael, and Jamie Shaddock, and Ronald and Sean Bons. Norman is survived by brothers Jack and Bruce Shaddock of Ontario and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Joan, brother Lou and sister Margaret DeMille. ALPHONSE, John “Johnny” William - Surrounded by his wife, daughter and loving family at North Bay General Hospital on Saturday, August 22, 2009 in his 78th year. Johnny Alphonse was the beloved husband of Edith “Edie” (Hampel) of Arnstein and very much loved father of Lisa Alphonse of Toronto. He was the dear brother of Doris Becks of Sault Ste. Marie, Patricia Alphonse of Edmonton, and Anne Siemens of Delta, B.C. Predeceased by his parents Della (Cudmore) and William Alphonse, his brother Lloyd Alphonse and his sister Jean Sheppard. Uncle Johnny was loved by many nieces and nephews. The family will receive visitors at the Arnstein Evangelical Baptist Church today, Monday, August 24, 2009 from 2:00 to 4:00 & 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 am in the church. Interment to follow at Arnstein Cemetery. Johnny and Edie enjoyed 54 wonderful years together. GRAHAM, Nigel Henry - Longtime Calvin Township resident Nigel Graham died peacefully at the Mattawa General Hospital on Saturday August 22, 2009, at the age of 90 years. Born in Papineau Township in 1919 he was the dear son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Welby Graham. Uncle Nigel will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his nephew Clayton, and his wife Lucy, great nephew and nieces Jamie (Erica) Cynthia (Mike), Melissa and Dawn. He was predeceased by his brother James, sister in law Lillian, his sister Iris, and his great nephew Bryan. Nigel farmed in Calvin Township for over fifty years. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in the Calvin Township Community Hall at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday August 26th 2009. Interment of ashes to follow in Mattawa. If desired donations to the Mattawa General Hospital, or the Cancer Society will be gratefully acknowledged as expressions of sympathy. Willard was active in his community having been a past member and Paul Harris Fellow with the Cornwall Rotary Club, as well as participating in the local Square Dance and Bridge Clubs. Dear father of Caroline Grist, Kenneth Grist (Cathy), James Grist, all of Sudbury; David Cormier (Bonnie) of Timmins; and step- father of Brenda Vallas, Cornwall and Dennis Mousseau (Marie) of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Sadly missed by 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Loved son of the late Wesley and Barbara (Moore) Grist. JOHNSON, (nee Goulding) Cecelia - passed peacefully surrounded by her family in her 91st year at the Douglas Memorial Hospital on Friday August 21, 2009. Cecelia Johnson, wife of the late Bernard (Bud) Johnson (1996). Loving mother of Gary (Carol), Richard and Cathy (John) Willick. Much loved grandmother of Dave, Greg, Chris, Chelsey and Ashlee, and dear sister in law of Marilyn Goulding. Cherished mother in law of Nancy Johnson. Predeceased by her parents Charles and Gwendolyn and brother Lloyd Goulding. Cecelia and Bud owned and operated Cedar Bay Inn for many years and were well known through the area for their good food and friendly service. A Niagara Regional Social Worker for many years Cecelia touched many lives helping people who needed the help most in our society. But her passion and love was riding horses. Cecelia was an excellent equestrian winning numerous awards and trophies. She very active in the local saddles clubs helping to establish the Port Colborne Saddle Club and even becoming president for several years! Cecelia loved to ride in parades and participated in parades all across the Niagara Region. On her 90th birthday Cecelia passed her driving test passing with full marks and was extremely proud of her accomplishment. Funeral services will be conducted in St. Paul's Anglican Church on Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock. Interment St. Paul's Churchyard. VAN DYKE, Hendrik H. - 10 December 1926 - 23 August 2009. On Sunday August 23rd, 2009, Hendrik passed away peacefully at Welland General Hospital at the age of 82. Hank leaves behind his wife Marion of 54 years, his son James and his daughter Kathleen and son-in-law Lesslie, and Opa to Fiona and Graham Tunmer. Hank was born in Stadskanaal in the Netherlands, the second son of George and Zwaantji van Dijk. Survived by his siblings Jane, Susie, Tiny, Hanno, Albert, Herman, Joe, George and Tino and their families. Before emigrating to Canada in May of 1951, Hank served in the Dutch Armed Forces from 1946-1950 in Indonesia. Hank is a member of Drummond Hill Presbyterian Church were he served as an elder and Sunday School Teacher. Hank was employed as an electrician for 35 years with the Canadian Niagara Power Company. Hendrik will be at the MORSE & SON FUNERAL HOME, 5917 Main Street, where his family will receive friends on Monday August 31st, from 2-4 and 7-9. A service to celebrate Hank's life will be held at Drummond Hill Presbyterian Church, 6136 Lundy's Lane on Tuesday afternoon September 1st, at 1:00 pm. BOWMAN, Robert (Bob) Leonard - Passed away peacefully at Hospice Niagara on August 20, 2009. Sadly missed by his wife and soul mate for over 50 years, Jean, his daughter Shara Bowman of Thorold, his daughter Roberta (Rob) Irvine of Cambridge, his pseudo-daughter, Marilyn, his buddy Whiskers and baby Willow. Predeceased by his parents Leonard and Marguerite, a sister, Doris and a brother, Gary. Bob's love for golf was second to none, but he also had a great love for music and singing and in his earlier years was part of a quartet that performed at different venues throughout the area, sang with the former Gentlemen Songsters, the Niagara Men's Chorus and the Mountainview United Church Choir. Following his retirement with the grandiose title of Real Property Manager (as Bob called it) with the St Lawrence Seaway in 1988, Bob took up woodworking as a hobby. If not on the golf course he could be found in his shop working on one of the many pieces of furniture, etc that he created over the years and which he considered as a true “labor of love”. The family would like to thank the many friends and family members who took the time to visit or call during Bob's illness, Dr. Levesque and his wonderful staff of nurses, Dr. McMillan, Dr Hartman, the wonderful team of workers from CCAC and that wonderful caring group from Hospice Niagara that made his last days so comfortable. Cremation has taken place and there will be a celebration of Bob's life on Wednesday August 26 at 1:00 p.m. at Mountainview United Church. HODGE-WAUGH, Elizabeth Nightingale (nee Jackson) - in her 81st year mercifully released from her struggle with cancer on August 22. Predeceased by husbands Jack Robinson, Archie Hodge and Ross Waugh, Elizabeth is survived by her sister Pat (Harry); four children Ken Robinson (Rose Marie), Rob Robinson (Ruth), Sandy Westoby, and Don Robinson (Cathy). She will also be missed by her 28 grand and great-grandchildren. Liz lived life on her own terms. She read voraciously and retained a keen interest in world events and the activities of her family and friends. We will remember her gifts as a hostess. Nobody ever left her table hungry but they often left her home with leftovers. She loved to cook and to entertain. The family would like to give special thanks to friends Ralph and Doug, Sandra and Jane, Trudy, Doctors Horning and Hartman and Nurse Charlene who gave so much love, care and support to Liz in her fight and made it possible for her to remain in her home until the last. HERBERT PAUL (HERB) SMITH Wednesday, 26 August 2009 - 12:56pm Herb Smith was born Sept. 3, 1922 and peacefully passed away on Aug. 24, 2009 at the age of 86. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Marie; daughters, Linda and Judy (Gerry) of Winnipeg, Man., Diane, and Geraldine; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sister, Edith, of Dryden, Ont. He was predeceased by son, Gary; his parents; and brothers, Ginter, Hank, and Gerald. In 1939, Herb left home to serve in the WWII and remained in service overseas until his return in 1947. He was discharged with the rank of Sergeant Major. Herb later served on the Fort Frances Fire Department and retired as captain in 1982. Dad enjoyed all outdoor activities and fishing was his passion. Cremation has taken place, and a private interment will take place in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances, Ont. ZANUTTO, George 2009-08-23 Mr. George Zanutto, age 74 years of 205 Mountdale Avenue died in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, on Friday, August 21, 2009. George was born and raised in Fort William. He worked for the Thunder Bay Separate School Board as a grade 8 teacher. He was a member of St. Patrick‘s Cathedral and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf and was a dedicated Detroit Red Wings fan. George is survived by his son David and wife Leanne, Calgary, daughter Elaine, Philadelphia, son John, Thunder Bay and grandchildren Matthew, Sarah, Trinity, Kevin and Lauren. He was predeceased by his wife Maria, brother Joe and sisters Eola Bottos and Lena Grimes. Cremation has taken place and funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 when family and friends will gather for the Funeral Mass in St. Patrick’s Cathedral at 11:00 am celebrated by Rev. Msgr. P.M. Stilla V.G. Interment will take place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery at a later date. Vigil Prayers will be offered on Monday evening at 7:00 pm. in the Blake Funeral Chapel.
