PEARD , Katherine "Kay" April 10, 1911 - June 22, 2009 Katherine "Kay" Peard, beloved wife of Harry Peard of Calgary, passed away peacefully at Cedars Villa nursing home on Monday, June 22, 2009, at the age of 98 years. Katherine lived and died an ever-faithful servant of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. She was born in April of 1911, the third child of four children born to Stephen and Xenia (Jean) Kolenich, Ukrainian immigrants, on the family homestead near Dysart, Saskatchewan. She was educated at Canterbury country school near her home and attended Normal School in Regina. Her teaching career, which began in a one-room school house, spanned nearly forty years. She taught at rural schools in Southern Saskatchewan and at Taber Central School prior to her marriage on July 5, 1948. She then taught at the Red Cross school north of Vulcan, Alberta and later at Vulcan High School, as well as St. Patrick's and St. Mary's separate schools in Taber, Alberta, where the family moved in 1961. While living in Vulcan, she served as President of the Catholic Women's League of St. Anthony's parish. During her retirement, she spent a number of pleasurable winters in Mesa, Arizona. Kay was an active person all the days of her life, enjoying curling, golfing, swimming and walking. Despite having lived in Alberta for over sixty years, she remained an unwavering supporter of all curling teams from Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Roughriders football teams and all things Saskatchewan. During World War II, Katherine joined the "WRENS" and was stationed at Halifax, Nova Scotia. Besides her loving husband of almost sixty-one years, Katherine is survived by her son Phil Peard (Cathy) of Spokane, Washington, her daughter Lois Peard (Graham) of Calgary, and her beloved grandchildren, Sarah Peard, and Heather and Geoffrey Barnes. She is also survived by her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Thurza and Jack Peard of Taber, as well as many nieces and nephews, who were all very special to her. In addition to her parents, Katherine was predeceased by an infant son (1952), her grandson James Peard (2004), and by her siblings and their spouses, Mike and Una Kolenich, Mary and Archie Gibson, and Peter and Esther Kolenick. The family of Katherine Peard wishes to thank Bev, Rob, Joanne and the caregivers at Cedars Villa for the care and compassion shown to our beloved wife, mother and grandmother over the past four months. We also wish to thank Dr. Charles Yam and his staff for their care over many years. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church (541 Silvergrove Drive N.W.), on Friday, June 26, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. with the Very Rev. Michael Storey, VF, Presider. BOYER, Rita (Gauvreau) - Est décédée paisiblement avec ses enfants à son chevet, le 11 juin, 2009 en sa quatre-vingt-septième année, à West Oak Village, Oakville, Ontario. Rita était la mère bien-aimée de Cécile Leach, Louise Loomis, Raymond (Colline) et Denise (Doug Palmer). Elle était la grand-mère de Steven (Dana) et Kenneth (Sue) Leach, Dawn-Marie, Megan et Melissa Loomis, Justin (Mélanie) et Céleste Boyer. Son arrière petit-fils Tomas se souviendra tendrement d'elle. Rita était la chère soeur de Violette Mantha (feu- Rodolphe), Beth (Al Mason), Gilberte Gauvreau-Gagné (feu-Léodor), Reina Bourdeau (feu-Jean-Louis), Annette Boudier (Bill), Bernard (Lina), Roger (Helen), Ray (feue-Audrey) et Victor (feue-Shirley). L'ont précédé dans le deuil, ses parents Lorenzo Gauvreau et Argentine Landry, ses quatres frères William, Wilfrid (feue-Annette), Joe, Oscar (Gisele-survivante), sa soeur Dolores (feu-Allan Winkler), ainsi que deux gendres Ted Leach et Joe Loomis. Durant sa vie, Rita était active dans sa communauté. Elle a participé pendant plusieurs années dans l'association 'Les dames de Ste-Anne'. Rita s'était aussi dévouée pendant 50 ans au bien-être d'autrui avec l'organization 'Ladies of the Royal Purple' à North Bay. Les funérailles auront lieu à en l'église Saint- Vincent-de-Paul le vendredi 26 juin à 11 heures. She was actively involved with the 'Ladies of the Royal Purple' for 50 years. Rita served as Honoured Royal Lady, Past Honoured Royal Lady and was awarded a Lifetime Membership. While residing at the Golden Age Centre on Worthington Street she also served on the Board. Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Paroisse St.- Vincent-de-Paul, Friday, June 26, at 11:00 a.m. Her final resting place will at All Saints Mausoleum at St. Mary's Cemetery. GUNTNER , Franz (Frank) October 12, 1931 - June 22, 2009 Frank Guntner, beloved husband of Ursula Guntner of Calgary, passed away on June 22, 2009 at the age of 77 years. Franz (Frank) Guntner was born on October 12, 1931 in Poland. He immigrated to Canada from Germany in 1950. In the early years he lived and worked with his cousins in Saskatchewan. Then he worked as a hard rock and metal miner in British Columbia and Ontario. In 1955 he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and made it his career for twenty-two years. He served with the 2nd Battalion of the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada, the Royal Canadian Regiment and the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry. During that time he also did a tour with the United Nations in Cyprus and two tours with NATO in Germany. He married Ursula in 1959 and they have lived in Calgary since 1961 raising their two daughters. In 1982 he started and his own locksmith business (Frank's Mobile Lock and Key Service) out of Okotoks. He retired in 1995. Frank's life was his work, dedicating everything he had to support his family. He was a member of the Q.O.R. Association and of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 285 for many years. Besides his loving wife Ursula, Frank is survived by his daughters, Caroline S. Quilloy of Irricana and Virginia A. Charest of Calgary; three grandchildren, David, Phillip and Tamara; and three great-grandchildren, David, Darian and Shaelyn. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Georg and Stasi, Johann and Margarete; sister Anna Vogel; and numerous nieces and nephews, all living in Germany. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, and two brothers-in-law. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Friday, June 26, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . VILPONEN, Elmi 2009-06-24 Mrs. Elmi Vilponen, (nee Saarela) age 91 years of Carrie Street, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, on Thursday, June 18, 2009. Born in Finland in 1918, she spent the first part of her life there. After her husband passed away in 1940, and her children had grown up, she immigrated to Canada in 1962 around the same time as her sisters, Saiman and Toinin. While here Elmi worked as a skilled seamstress for many people in the area. Her relaxation time was spent in the garden tending to her vegetables and flowers. Elmi also had a talent for making all kinds of traditional Finnish foods for her friends to enjoy. Elmi, although away from her immediate family has always kept in touch with them in Finland and took a great interest in their lives. She also had a love for animals and still missed and cared for her dog Jappe whom had passed away many years ago. Elmi was a very independent and strong willed person (Sisu), who also had a soft and caring side. She continued to take care of herself and her home until the end. Elmi will be sadly missed by her grandson Jarkko (Minna); children Juuso and Johanna; grandson Jarmo (Niina); children: Petri, Joni, and Heli; nieces Marlene and Marjorie Bloom; friends Mervi (Bob); children: Marcus and Sanna; and friend Tarmo. She is also survived by other relatives and friends in Finland and Canada. Elmi was predeceased by her husband Martti; parents Fanny Vehmasaho and Kaarlo Saarela; sons: Olavi and Kaarlo; siblings: Toivo, Siiri, Saima, Veikko, Kaarle, Kirsti, Toini. Funeral Services for the late Elmi Vilponen will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday June 26th, 2009 in the Hilldale Lutheran Church 321 Hilldale Road, officiated by Rev. Jari Lahtinen. NOY, Kenneth 2009-06-24 Mr. Kenneth George Noy, age 76 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 21, 2009 at his residence. Ken was born on January 20, 1933 in Port Arthur and was a lifelong resident of the area. Ken did some small mixed farming and was always working to raise and provide for his family. He enjoyed playing cribbage and was a member of the Kakabeka Falls and Rural District Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 225. Ken will be sadly missed by his daughter: Catherine Bailey; sons: Grant (Yvonne), Richard (Kathleen) and Johnathan (Anne); grandchildren: Kenneth (Nicole), Jamie (Kyle), Charlotte (Matt) and Matthew (Michelle) Illson; Cameron, Keith and Kyla Noy, Cassandra Myllyniemi and Connor Noy; great grandchildren: Jaydence, Devin and Carter. SANDBERG, Viola 2009-06-24 Mrs. Viola "Vye" Sandberg, age 82 years, a longtime resident of S. Court Street, passed away unexpectedly at her residence on Sunday, June 21, 2009. Vye was born in Port Arthur on May 13, 1927 and attended grade school at Pine Street School before moving to Geraltdton where she attended high school. She married Clyde Sandberg in 1946 and they lived in Edmonton From 1955-1962. Vye completed Secretarial School and worked for 22 years as a Senior Clerk with the Children’s Aid Society retiring in 1986. She was an avid curler in earlier years and you could always find her glued to the television watching curling or her beloved Edmonton Eskimos. Vye was very involved in different organizations throughout the years, most notably Community Living Thunder Bay and the Monty Parks Center (ARC Industries). She was a generous spirit. Vye is survived by her sister-in-law Jean Johnson, cousin Eleanor McMurray, nephew Lee (Hanya) Johnson, nephew Larry Johnson, niece Lisa Deley (Ernst Thies) as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was predeceased by her beloved son Bruce Sandberg, parents Elsa and Albert Johnson, brother Ray Albert Johnson, Bruce’s father Clyde "Sandy" Sandberg, nephew Ryan Johnson and niece Deborah Lynn Johnson. Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held on Friday, June 26, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery with Rev. Ed Long presiding. UCHACZ, Stephen 2009-06-24 Stephen Andrew Uchacz, age 24 years of Thunder Bay, passed away accidently on Sunday, June 21, 2009. Born on March 22, 1985, Stephen was raised on a farm and loved to go out and help his dido, "Buddy." Stephen always wanted to go back to Alberta to work on the farm. He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors, and had a love of all animals, especially his dog „Bear‰; they were inseparable. Stephen enjoyed talking about physics and mechanical things, and also enjoyed his toys. He spoke highly of his family and friends, and wanted to please everybody his entire life. Stephen was quite a salesman. Stephen will be missed by his mother Ella; father Myron (Lisa); brother Daniel (Kristy); sister Ashley (Tim); babczia Janina Czaczkowski and baba Amiela Uchacz; step- brothers Jordan and Connor; his best friend Elisha Winters. Numerous aunts; uncles; and cousins also survive. He was predeceased by his dziado Edward Czaczkowski and Jerry Uchacz, his dido, "Buddy." GREEN, Jill Elizabeth (nee Hodgkin) Jill died peacefully in State College, PA on June 22, 2009 with her family nearby. She was the beloved wife of Al Green, the loving mother of Tony and Tim Green and very proud grandmother of Jessica Green. She will be sadly missed by her sister Sally Morris, her brother-in-law John Morris and her nephew and niece, John Borra and Jill Borra. Jill was born in Ottawa Jan. 20, 1933 to Mina and Orrie Hodgkin. In her early twenties she moved to New York City where she enjoyed a successful career as a Fashion Buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor. It was there she met and married Al Green, the love of her life and husband of 47 years. They enjoyed many happy retirement years living in Longboat Key, FL and more recently in State College, PA in a retirement community connected with Penn State University. MASSON , Dale January 18, 1973 - June 20, 2009 It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Dale Masson of Calgary. At the time of his passing Dale was running in Kananaskis Country with his colleagues from the Burnet, Duckworth and Palmer Law Firm, and accompanied by his wife and boys. Dale is greatly missed by his soul-mate Tanya, his wife of four years, their children Wyatt Jamie (twenty-two months) and Samuel Lewis (two months), his mother Linda Masson, brother Grant Masson (Monique), all of Edmonton, sister-in-law Tara Stewart (Michael) of Calgary, and Tanya's parents Barbara and Warren Smith of Olds. This talented and witty, gentle and loving man will be remembered with smiles by a host of extended family and friends, many of them former and present hockey and law firm team-mates. Dale's hockey career had him between the pipes from the beginning, ultimately rewarding him with two national championships; a Memorial Cup (Kamloops Blazers) and CIAU Cup (Alberta). Along the way he was a frequent all-star and was honoured to play for Team Canada in a World University tournament. He spent two years as a professional, playing in the ECHL and CHL, before completing his law degree at U of A and articling with BDP, where he was an Associate working in the Securities Department. Dale's greatest passion was his family; he loved being a husband to Tanya and Dada to the boys. Born in Mactaquac, NB on January 17, 1916, to the late Roy and Marguerite Currie. She was predeceased by her loving husband Bill and brother Melbourne Currie. Leaving two sons Peter William Dunlap of Winnipeg, MB and James Dunlap of Perth-Andover, NB; one daughter Mrytle Fox-Patriquen of Douglas, NB; seven grandchildren, Christopher Dunlap of Calgary, AB, David Dunlap of Perth-Andover, NB, Ryan Dunlap of Winnipeg, MB, Kent and Lynn Fox of Fredericton, NB, Greg Fox of Woodstock, NB, Jan Spoutamire of Florida and one great-granddaughter, Kasha Dunlap of Perth-Andover, NB. During her life as a mother and housewife, she worked as a saleslady and seamstress at Vinegar's Department Store in Perth-Andover, NB.
