FREEMARK, Lawrence Ambrose 1924 - 2009 Peacefully at home in Renfrew June 9, 2009 in his 85th year. Devoted husband of Diana McCormack and loving father of Tim, Carol, Michael (Peg), Judy (Vern Prentice), and David (Anne). Predeceased by daughter Debbie. Proud grandfather of Christine, Sarah, Leo, Alexandra, Erin, Maureen and Sam Freemark, Janet, Michael, Stephanie, and Colin Prentice. Survived by sisters Marjorie, Trudy, Maureen and brother Frank. Predeceased by brothers Andy, Stan, Phil, and Tommy. As a young man Lornie served in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Navy (DEMS), played professional hockey after the War in England, then returned to Renfrew to begin his life with Diana. While working for Canada Post, he and Diana raised 6 children and enjoyed more than 60 years of marriage. Lornie instilled his passion for hunting, fishing, hockey, and golf in his children. FRITZ, William (Bill) Suddenly at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the age of 80 years. He leaves his wife Judie Fritz, Ottawa, son Peter and wife Carla Wilkie, Squamish, B.C. and sisters Marnie Cheesman (Hugh), and Beverly Hill (Orlo), all of Washington State. Bill was born Aug. 24, 1928 in Cathlamet, WN and served time in the U.S. Air Force in the Philippines, then returned to Seattle to finish his Ph.D in Geology at the University of Washington. In 1964 he immigrated with his family to Canada as a research geologist with the Geological Survey of Canada, Ottawa. He spent two summers at the Burgess Shale in Yoho National Park, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since retirement he and Judie spent many summers doing geology in Nevada. GAYNER, Robert "Bob" Harold Peacefully, at the Ottawa General Cancer Centre on Monday morning, June 8th, 2009, at the age of 79. A man loved by many people, he will be sadly missed by all of us: his children Bill, Michael and Mary, their partners Harry, Ganaele and Chris, his grand daughter Emma, his new love Chloe, his extended family and many good friends. He was the loving and devoted husband of the late Helen Gayner. Bob was a true Canadian, with a long distinguished career as a Canadian diplomat who served as Canadian Ambassador to Iraq and Canadian Consul General in Chicago. After retiring from the Foreign Service, he was Executive Director for the Business Fund for Canadian Studies in the United States and then Executive Director for the Trade Facilitation Office Canada. Bob also found time for extensive volunteer work, including serving as Chair of Catholic Family Services Ottawa as well as in regional and national leadership roles with the Federal Superannuates Association. He was known for his enthusiasm and hearty laugh, and he loved people, travel, and life. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa, ON, from 4-7 p.m., on Thursday, June 11th, 2009. A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at the Notre-Dame Cathedral, 375 Sussex Drive at St. Patrick, Ottawa at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 12th, 2009. HILL, John Evans It is with deep sadness that the Hill family announces the passing of their parents John Hill on June 7, 2009 and Doris Hill on October 1, 2008. Both are predeceased by their parents, and Doris's brother Bill. They leave to mourn a large family of seven children: Sharon, Sandra, Wendy, Barry, Conrad, Paul and Pamela; as well as John's sister Wilhelmine and Doris's sister Patricia. John and Doris leave behind twelve grandchildren and eight great -grandchildren. For the past twenty-seven years John has been a dedicated employee of Adga Inc. and a devoted, loving caregiver to his wife Doris during her lengthy illness. He was an amazing pillar of strength to family, friends and coworkers. John and Doris will both be sadly missed by all who knew them during their long and successful life and career. KELLY, William H. Rtd. Deputy-Commissioner, RCMP Peacefully at the Montfort Hospital on Saturday June 6, 2009. Predeceased in 2005 by Nora his beloved wife for 65 years. Bill was born on May 8, 1911 in Wales and came to Canada in 1928. In 1933 he joined the RCMP and spent the next six years in various detachments in Saskatchewan. From there he accepted a variety of assignments with the RCMP in Canada and abroad culminating in his appointment as Deputy-Commissioner in 1967, a position he held until his retirement in 1970. Along the way he served as the RCMP representative to Interpol (1952-53) and to the NATO Security Committee (1959-1963) acting as Chairman in his final year. Bill in his retirement, with the able assistance of Nora, turned his considerable energy to writing many books on policing, on various aspects of the history of the RCMP and two recounting his own experiences while serving in Saskatchewan in the 1930's and during the Second World War in Toronto. Enthusiastic supporters of the arts and the community Bill and Nora made many friends and enjoyed a wonderful retirement together. DE ROSSO, Grace and Alphonse "Al" This June 10 marks the first Anniversary of the passing of Grace De Rosso and on June 14, the twentieth anniversary of her brother Alphonse "Al" De Rosso, beloved husband of Joan Allison (also deceased). Grace and Al were both born in Montreal and after completing their studies moved to the U.S. to pursue their careers in New York and Washington DC, respectively. Grace returned to Montreal in the late 1970s to care for her parents, Angela Maria Monteferrante and Antonio Di Rosso. Throughout their lives Grace and Al's mutual love and respect for each other and their family remained, despite their distance. Today, they are united in Heaven, together with their loved ones. SCOTT, John Michael Grierson Michael, a retired investment banker, died at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, June 7, 2009. He was eighty-one. Michael was married for 58 years to his wife Janet. They have six children: Peter, Tom, Sarah, Geoffrey, Martha and Mary; and 14 grandchildren. Michael also leaves behind his sister, Barbara. In his lifelong career in investment banking, Michael served as vice-chairman of Wood Gundy Inc. He later held the same post at Scotia McLeod. He served on the boards of several firms including Bombardier Inc. and Weyerhaeuser Canada Ltd. He was also a major contributor to the community. Michael was chairman of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, a director of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, and a generous donor, with his wife Janet, to the Art Gallery of Ontario, York University, and many other institutions. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed fishing, shooting and golfing at the Ristigouche Salmon Club, Long Point Company, the Toronto Golf Club and many other clubs. He was also an enthusiastic member of the Initram and the Rosedale Walking Club. Michael will be missed by friends across Canada, the United States, and around the world. After being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, he bravely faced this terrible disease. KRASTEL , Douglas William September 9, 1967 - June 3, 2009 Doug Krastel, beloved husband of Shelley Krastel, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, June 3, 2009. Doug was proud to have been born on the Canadian Air Force base in Zweibrucken, Germany and moved with his family to Canada as a young boy. PLEWES , Janice Christine (nee Webster) September 9, 1971 - June 4, 2009 It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Janice Plewes, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, and friend, in a tragic accident in Penticton, BC, on June 4, 2009, at the age of 37. Janice was born in North Vancouver, and her family later lived in Edmonton for three years before settling in Calgary in 1979. Janice attended the Andrew Sibbald, Nickle, Dr. E.P. Scarlett and Western Canada schools and graduated in Computer Science from the University of Calgary. Janice was an undergraduate co-op computer programming student at Nortel Networks in Ottawa and Renaissance Energy in Calgary, and upon graduation joined Novatel GPS in Calgary as a programmer, testing software used in global positioning systems. Janice and her husband Cameron first met as young teenagers, began a serious relationship as older teenagers, and were married (to the relief of many) on September 8, 2001. Janice set aside her professional career in July of 2004 with the birth of Anna, who was joined by a brother, Andrew, in September of 2006 and a sister, Amy, in September of 2008. She devoted herself to her own young family as she had always dedicated herself to her family and friends. A few years ago, Janice discovered an interest in the sport of triathlon and pursued it with characteristic dedication, enjoying training for and competing in many events, including the Ironman Canada race in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Janice leaves behind her husband and children, parents Gary and Margaret, her eldest brother Brent (Glenys, children Karyss and Kaleb) and older brother Jeff. Janice will also be lovingly remembered by her uncle John Webster (Alison), cousin Scott Webster (Sarah), parents-in-law Don and Betty Plewes, brother-in-law Geoff (Sue, son Evan), and sister-in-law Katherine; as well as by her many relatives, her many friends and countless others who knew her. RANS , Lucille September 9, 1921 - June 8, 2009 Lucille Rans passed away peacefully at the age of 87 to be with her Lord and Savior. Left behind to mourn her passing are her five children: Doug (Darlene), Gail, Hollie (Patrick), Pennie, and Les, as well as beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces. Lucille was predeceased by her husband Joe in 1997. Special thanks to all the nurses and doctors on Unit 93, Rockyview Hospital. RENTON , Jean "Jenny" Elizabeth June 13, 1923 - June 8, 2009 Jean was born June 13, 1923 in East St. Paul, Manitoba; she passed away just five days short of celebrating her 86th birthday. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her family, friends and relatives. In 1942 she met a dashing airman William Doug Renton Sr. They married June 19, 1945 in Victoria and had five children. Jean lived several places, in fact, all her children were born in different cities. In 1955 she moved to Calgary where she immersed herself in raising a family and spent the rest of her life there. Jean loved being a wife, mother and a grandmother and we could not have asked for a better mother or grandma. Doug Sr. built Jean her dream home in Elbow River in 1980, which quickly became the centre of family activities and lots of family gatherings. She created wonderful memories for her grandchildren; one of them was dressing up as Santa every Christmas at the cabin in Fairmont. She had a wonderful sense of humour, enjoyed playing cards or any game for that matter. She enjoyed music and dancing and getting dolled up, she never left the house unless she looked like a million dollars. Jean was married fifty-nine years to the love of her life until Doug Sr.'s passing in 2004. Jean lived the last six years of her life at Wentworth Manner where as an avid hockey fan, she found a kindred spirit in her friend George and they enjoyed many hours watching games together and listening to music. Jean was beautiful inside and out and we will all miss her dearly. Jean will be sadly missed by her children Doug (Barbara), Ken (Susan), Ian (Holly), Susan (Robert) brother Dave Derwent (Ann), sister June Hammill, sister-in-law Doreen Renton, half-brother James Ludwig and grandchildren Terra, Danielle, Dave, Lisa, Andrew, Heather, Derrick, Jamie and Nick and great-grandson Maximillion. Jean was predeceased by her husband Doug Sr., infant son Keith and sister Elaine. TREVORS , Leonard Albert West October 11, 1917 - June 5, 2009 Leonard Trevors, beloved husband of Loretta, passed away on Friday, June 5, 2009 at the age of 91 years. Len was born in Chatham, NB on October 11, 1917. He came to Calgary in 1941 where he met his future wife, Loretta Watson. They were married on July 23, 1941 and would have celebrated their sixty-eighth wedding anniversary next month. Len loved the mountains and spent many happy hours in Beaumont park. Subsequently a bench will be erected in his loving memory. He is survived by his wife, Loretta; beloved daughter Lois and husband Thomas Kelly; three sisters, Eleanor Bladon (George), Cathy Matchett and Betty Whalen (Jack); brother Donald; and many relatives in the Maritime Provinces. He was predeceased by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Wilmot Trevors; three brothers, Alfred, Ronald and Boyd; brother-in-law Leslie Matchett; sister-in-law Jean Trevors; and numerous stepbrothers. Son of the late Arthur and of the late Hélène (née Thibault) Cté. Loving father of Raymi Cté (Kaila Punkkinen) of Chelmsford (mother Thérèse Cté (née Vicnent) of Azilda) and Lenn Cté (mother Carol Cté (née Filion) of Ottawa) of Ottawa. Also survived by his step daughter Diane Stevenson (Scott) of U.S.A. Kinross. Sadly missed by his many brothers and sisters. Lovingly remembered by his step-grandchildren, Justin Gelinas, Joshua Gelinas, Janelle Stevenson and Sarah Stevenson. Ray was owner/operator of Cté Sports in Chelmsford for many years. He was an avid snowmobiler and horseman who owned horses at his residence and at Sudbury Downs. DWORKSI, Joel Charles - In Loving Memory of Joel Charles Dworksi, 61 years, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 8th, 2009. Husband of Sharon (Logan) Dworski. Father of Kimberley (husband Kenneth Merits). Much loved grandpa of Joel and Kassandra, Poppa “D“ will be truly missed. Son of Romeo and Elizabeth (Wilson) Dworski both predeceased. Brother of Edward predeceased, Cynthia and Gary both of Toronto. Born in Haileybury, Joel worked at INCO for 33 years and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was an active unionist and strong member of Local 6500, where he enjoyed helping others. In healthier times he enjoyed fishing in the summer up behind Capreol and in the winter his trips to Cuba. Joel was a very kind and caring man who truly believed he was his brothers keeper. In that same spirit, the family ask donations to the Sudbury Food Bank to continue his legacy of giving.
