SARGEANT, Douglas - At Linhaven Home for the Aged on Thursday, June 4, 2009 in his 93rd year, Douglas went to be with his Lord. Beloved husband of the late Victoria (2007) for 45 years. Loving father of Terry (Christine), Renda Hicks (Chris), Roy, Mark (Tyna), and Darryl (Janice). He will be missed by his grandchildren Rachelle, Keith, Rob, Mike, Laura, Grace and Will. At 92, Douglas remained young spirited and active until his passing. He was a longtime member of the Salvation Army, a veteran of WWII, and a proud retiree of GM with 38 years of service. PAGE, Howard William - At the Henderson General Hospital in Hamilton on Wednesday June 3, 2009 at the age of 78 years after a courageous battle with cancer. He was an active member of the First United Church in Sherkston serving as a Steward and Elder. Howard was also an active member of the Port Colborne and District Conservation Club. He received an award from the Ministry of Natural Resources/Grand River Conservation Authority for his outstanding volunteer efforts. Marina Gertrude (Gillcash) Griffiths, wife of the late James (Harry) Griffiths, of Blackville, passed away on May 27, 2009, at her residence with family at her side. Born on May 7, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Enos and Ruth (Cassidy) Gillcash of Norton, NB. She was a partner in the M&W Takeout in Blackville, a member of the Maple Leaf Seniors Club, life member of Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion Doaktown Branch, volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and a member of St Andrew's United Church and St Andrew's Choir. She was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays. She enjoyed playing darts, card games, bingo, driving her motorcycle, along with other special events with family and friends. Marina is survived by her daughters Susan (Kirk) Berube of Moncton, and Wendy (Don) Underhill of Blackville; brother Glenn (Zinnie) Gillcash of Alberta; brother-in-law Claude (Della) Griffiths of Norton; sister-in-law Gean (Warren) Snyder of Norton; her grandchildren Margaret Underhill, Liane Underhill, Raelene (Lanny Burke) Hetherington, Herschel Underhill, Donna (Greg) Noel, and Jamie (Amanda) Underhill; ten great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held on Friday, May 29, 2009, at 2 pm, from St Andrew's United Church, in Blackville, with Reverend Jim Postlewaite officiating. Organist Roma Gallan led the congregation in the singing of the hymns "In The Garden", "Remind Me Dear Lord", "No One Ever Cared For Me Like Jesus" and "Walk With Me". Roy MacRae also sang a solo entitled "He Touched Me". Burial took place following the funeral in the church cemetery. Robina Gertrude Underhill Robina Underhill passed away on January 22, 2009 at Peace Arch Hospital, White Rock, BC at the age of 82. Born in Chatham, NB. Robina was the daughter of the late Stanley and Mary (Gillis) Tucker. Robina is survived by her son Weldon Underhill (Georgina) of Prince George BC, daughter Debbie Underhill (Joel Bailey) of Crofton, BC, son Kim Underhill (Suzette Pardy) of Surrey, BC, grandchildren Argie, Christina, Richard, Natasha, Heather (Michael) and great grandchildren Grace and James. Robina is also survived by her sisters Viola Dunn, Delores Sturgeon (Norm), brother Joseph Tucker all of White Rapids and her brother Ellery Tucker (Diane) of Fredericton, NB. Besides her parents, Robina was also predeceased by her husband Eugene, grandson Ben Hoben, brother Edison, Jerome, Tony and Roy as well as her sister Bernice Duffy. Robina loved and appreciated her family, her long lasting friendships, the support of her niece Wendy and her new found friendship after moving to Surrey, BC in May 2008. She celebrated her 82nd birthday last October, took ill in December, 2008 and peacefully passed away surrounded by family in January. She will be sadly missed by many. A memorial service will be held on June 6, 2009 at 1PM at St. Bridget Roman Catholic Church in Renous. Mrs. Esther Florence (Conners) Tuzo, widow of Errol Tuzo of Kelly's Special Care Home, Quarryville, formally of Campbell Road, Blackville, passed away Sunday, May 31 2009 at her late residence, at the age of 74. Born in Blackville NB, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Jennie (Walls) Conners. She was a homemaker and a member of St Andrew's United Church. She is survived by one son; Allison (Valerie) Tuzo of Blackville NB; one sister; Anna Shand of Harper Road Special Care Home; one brother; Percy Conners of Fredericton; one grandchild. Besides her parents and her husband (1967) she was predeceased by two brothers; Merritt and Shirley Conners. Mrs. Esther Florence Tuzo rested at the United Church Hall in Blackville with a private visitation. A public funeral service was held Tuesday June 2, 2009, at 4 p.m. from St Andrew's United Church, Blackville, with Rev. Olive Ann Archibald officiating. GREGOVSKI, Daniel - The family of Daniel, with profound sorrow, announce his passing at the age of 78 on May 17, 2009 at the Thomspon General Hospital. Daniel was the eldest son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth Gregovski. He was born on April 15, 1931 in Port Colborne, Ontario. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Sya, his children; Shelly, Daniel, Katherine and son-in-law Jerry, and his grandchildren; (Kathy and Jerry's) Justin, Jordan, and Jamie, (Dan & Lisa's) Dana, Alex and Brianna. He will be fondly remembered by members of his family: James (Tina) Gregovski and family of Saskatoon, Gary (Pat) Gregovski and family of Port Colborne, Liz Smyth and family of Port Colborne, Mary Harris and family of St. Catharines, Pearl (Jack) Roscoe and family of St Catharines, Sandra Gregovski and family of St. Catharines, in-laws; Gerrit (Olga) deRuiter and family of Fort Erie and Joan Alexander and family of St. Catharines, and many more family and friends. He was looking forward to meeting up in heaven with brothers, John and Stephen, son-in-law Gary, and numerous relatives and dear friends that have gone on before. He spent his formative years in Ontario. living and working hard on the family farm. He went to Welland Vocational School where he acquired many of the handyman skills that would serve well throughout his life. In his early years acquired his love of music, skating and Hungarian culture. After meeting the love of his life, Sya, he was hired by Inco and moved to Thompson on 1960. He went back to Ontario later in the year to marry and bring his wife back to their new home. Dan spent his years at Inco, 1961-1991, in the smelter. He was from the old school. He worked hard, and was very particular about doing the job correctly. He very much enjoyed many of the people he worked with and many of his lifelong relationships began in the smelter. Later in his career when he worked in the training department he had the opportunity to pass on much of his knowledge and wisdom to new hires at Black Dan University. Family vacations back in Ontario were a highlight where the family traveled for many days to visit relatives and sites around Port Colborne. He enjoyed showing us his old stomping grounds as well as showing off his young family to Ontario relatives. He had a lifelong love of music: Piano lessons in his 40's, collecting Hungarian music, choirs when he was young. He loved good music from Pavoritti to Meatloaf and everything in between. He liked to capture the moment: he took lots of pictures when he was younger, organized photo albums and slide shows, later in life this evolved into a love of painting. Many a home is adorned with paintings of Dan's, either as a gift, a card, a Christmas ornament, on a piece of wood or a saw blade. Always a good neighbour, he was willing to give a hand, welding many a trailer hitch, dock bracket, snowmobile sled bracket, etc., in the garage. Several generations of neighbours will remember the hotly contested street hockey games in the driveway and the cool refreshments afterwards downstairs at the bar. He loved wood“ going to get it, cutting it, splitting it, stacking it and most of all burning it. To say he kept the home fires burning would be an understatement. The Cottage, bought in 1973 from friend and neighbour Don Orchard, was Dan's meeting place for family and friends. Dan loved to work on the cottage, from planning to construction. This, our father built for us and will be remembered and cherished forever by the family. the annual hunting trip was an important part of his life: meetings, washing off the truck tires, sleeping late in the mornings, tucking each other in at night, getting lost, sound effects, picking berries, haircuts in the field, even shooting the odd goose. The accomplishments of his family: wife, children and grandchildren were a great source of pride for him. Dan and Sya were a love story for the ages. He loved Sya with all his might. “ I will miss him. He was the wind beneath my wings. I was truly blessed to share his life.“ A celebration of his life was held on Thursday May 21, 2009 at the Advent Lutheran Church in Thompson Manitoba. Burial took place at the Thompson Cemetery. Gerry was born July 19, 1933 in Klarenbeek, Netherlands. He and Ann were married on September 21, 1956. Gerry worked in construction throughout his career as a drywaller and later as a project manager. He was very community-oriented, volunteering for Meals-on-Wheels, Universal Golf Association and the Douglasdale Golf Course. Above all else, Gerry was dedicated to his Lord, his family and his church. He often visited those in hospital and assisted with church functions wherever needed. Besides his loving wife Ann, Gerry is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Agnes; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nina and Yves Gagnon, Carol and Tim Bergshoeff; ten grandchildren, Christina, Stephen, Alysha, Melissa, Mike, Paul, Stephanie, Will, Leah, and Brandon; and three great-granddaughters, Teghan, Taylor and Hailey, all of Calgary. He was predeceased by his parents Martha and Hendrikus; and sister Jenny. GRAVES, Gary B. - A resident of Merlin, Gary Graves passed away at the Chatham- Kent Health Alliance-Chatham Campus on Thursday June 4, 2009 at the age of 53. WHITE , Catherine Elizabeth Irene (FORMAN) July 20, 1916 - June 2, 2009 Catherine Elizabeth Irene White passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Hillcrest Extendicare. Catherine, or Rene as she was known, was born to Scottish immigrants Helen Rielly and James Forman in Reston, Manitoba. Helen died in 1929 and left Jim to raise four children and two adopted sons on his own. Like so many prairie families that survived the Great Depression, the Formans survived by being frugal, self-sufficient and determined. Rene worked as a telephone operator with the Rural Municipality of Pipestone and played in a women's softball league in south western Manitoba and North Dakota. When World War II broke out, she met a young airman from Kenora, Ontario at a Commonwealth Air Training dance in Rivers, Manitoba. During the war, Rene lived in Wells, B.C., where her brother Jim and adopted brothers Bert and Sandy Whytock had found work during the Depression. She was active in cross country, downhill skiing and curling while in B.C. In 1946 Rene married in Calgary to the airman she met at the dance during the war. Rene and George lived the rest of their lives in Calgary in the communities of North Mount Pleasant and Cambrian Heights. George worked as a conductor with CP Rail and they raised three children; Margaret, Mark and Gale. She did not hesitate to tune us up but on the flip side she was always right there to support and protect us. Our house was always open to friends and to this day it amazes us on how she could turn a small meal for a few into a meal to feed the many. In later years our Dad always knew who was coming for dinner as she spent all day making our favorite dishes. Rene's son-in-law Gary was so pleased to call her Mom and to be allowed into her kitchen to learn, from her, the art of cooking a family dinner. As we grew, her attention was on her grandchildren. Rene's love and attention grew into a strong bond with her granddaughter, who, when home from England, visited her often calling out "Grammers I'm home." Rene's grandsons were such a source of pride. Teaching them to make her famous egg salad sandwich or sitting talking and listening to their music brought her much joy. She was thrilled with what fine young men they turned out to be. Rene was the Worthy Matron of North Star Chapter 34 Order of the Eastern Star. Rene was predeceased by her parents Helen and Jim Forman, as well as her siblings Jack, Jim and Helen, her adopted brothers Bert and Sandy and finally her precious George in 1995. She is survived by her children, Margaret of Calgary, Mark (Anne) of Cochrane and Gale (Gary) Henderson of Sundre, AB; grandchildren Stacy White of London, England, Matt (Erin) of Cochrane, Dan (Vanessa) of Cochrane and great-grandson Noah of Cochrane; nieces Pat Mulligan of Saskatoon, SK, Gaye Carter of Quesnel, BC and nephew Clark Forman of Cache Creek, BC. Last but not least we must thank the caring staff of the Hillcrest Extendicare. Having a parent have to leave their home is not easy, but having such wonderful, kind, caring people take care of her when we could not be there, will never be forgotten. The staff made her life so comfortable and made her feel so cared for and loved. Randy and Karen, our Mom looked forward to so many things because of you. You always brought a smile when she saw you. We wish to thank Dr. Addison and the nursing staff, you are the most incredible and valuable people we have ever met. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
