UREN, Elvin - In loving memory of Elvin Uren who went to be with the Lord on June 1st, 2009. He was born in Sioux Lookout, Ontario in 1928 to Mabel and Jack Uren. He is survived by his wife Elsie of sixty years, his three children Bob, Bill, Bev and their spouses, ten grandchildren, twenty great- grandchildren, and two brothers. He faced this battle with his confidence in the Lord and with this verse, Psalm 4:8 “I will both lay me down in peace and sleep for thou Lord only makest me dwell in safety.“ Dad you are greatly loved and will be sweetly missed. BULLAS, Richard - It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Rick Bullas on Monday June 1, 2009 at the age of 58, after a brief battle with cancer. Rick was a loving husband to Virginia for 32 wonderful years. He was a devoted father to Erin and her husband Michael Appleton and proud new grandpa to Samantha Marley Appleton. Dave, at the age of 68 years, beloved husband of Kaija “Kay“, loving father of Russell (Darlene) and Gordon (Isabel) all of Wawa. GILLIGAN, Myrtle Eileen (nee Scott) - Born August 27, 1916 passed away peacefully, Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Linhaven with her family by her side. Predeceased by her husband Percy (1977). Proud mother of Sherry Clark and husband Glen; grandmother to Jennifer (Becky) Clark, Christopher Clark and wife Heather; great-grandmother to Evan, Avery and Brooklyn. SOUDER, Alice Kathleen (nee Bull) - at the Extended Care Unit of the Welland County General Hospital on Tuesday June 2, 2009 at the age of 83 years. Beloved wife of the late Bruce Souder (2004), loving mother of David (Lynn Skilling) Souder of Port Colborne, Robert (Elaine Kah) Souder of Ridgeway, Paul (Belinda) Souder of Welland and Mark (Gail McKee) Souder of Port Colborne, Grandmother of 12 and great grandmother of 17, sister of Audrey Pickard of Oakville and Donald (Marie) Bull of Welland, sister-in-law of Ann Elise Bull of Port Colborne, Margaret Gibson of Prescott and Donald Souder of Brockville. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Alice was predeceased by her parents Edward and Maud Bull, her brother Art Bull and her brother-in-law Franklin Pickard. She was born in Humberstone and has lived in this area all of her life. Alice worked as a RNA at the Port Colborne General Hospital for 16 years from where she retired. She was an original member of the Port Colborne Fife and Drum Band. A special thanks and appreciation to the staff at the ECU of the Welland County General Hospital for their special care. Cremation has taken place. The death of Florence Elizabeth Sherrard wife of Merlyn Sherrard of River Road, Sunny Corner, NB occurred at her late residence on Thursday, May 28, 2009 at the age of 70. Born in Newfoundland, Florence was the daughter of the late William and Clara Porter. Florence attended St Stephen's United Church, Red Bank, NB and was retired from Honest Ed's as a sales clerk. Besides her husband Merlyn, Florence is survived by one daughter Tracy Stewart (Colin) of Matthew Settlement, NB; four sons: Edmund Sherrard (Mary Ann) of Miramichi, NB, Mark Sherrard of Hamilton, On, Danny Sherrard (Kelly) of Boom Road, NB and Brian Johnson of Nova Scotia; stepbrother Melvin Porter (Betty) of Newfoundland; seven grandchildren: Cortney, Craig and Chelsey Stewart, Danielle and Steven Sherrard and Anna and Willie Johnson; great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by one step sister: Ella and one brother: Wilfred. Visitation was held at Meadows Funeral Home, Sunny Corner on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Joyce DeMerchant of Tobique Narrows passed away peacefully at Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on May 21st, 2009. Born in Medford, NB, on September 18th, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Eveleigh and Pauline (Brayall) Goodine. Joyce leaves behind her husband John "Jack" DeMerchant; her sons Michael DeMerchant (Patricia) of Saint John, Chris DeMerchant (Brenda) of Perth-Andover, Greg DeMerchant (Charlene) of Fredericton; her sisters Sheila Gillespie and Sharon Hicks, both of Fredericton; her brother Clifton Goodine (Nancy) of Perth-Andover; her grandchildren Ciara, Jordan, Nicole, and Tanya DeMerchant. Prior to her retirement, Joyce worked as a Registered Nurse. Funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 at 11 am from St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church. Father Curtis Sappier celebrated. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery. Music for the service was by Mrs. Roma Ferrell. The eulogy was given by Dr. Fredrick Goodine. BAIRD , Margaret Easton (nee Buchanan) May 25, 1921 - May 29, 2009 It is with great sadness that the family of Margaret Easton Baird (nee Buchanan) announces her passing, on Friday, May 29, 2009, four days after her 88th birthday. Margaret was born on May 25, 1921 in Glasgow, Scotland and immigrated to Canada with Bill and Alan in 1955. The Baird family moved to Calgary in 1961 and she resided here until her passing. Margaret is survived by her loving husband of fifty-nine years, Bill; and her children, Alan (Marg) and Anne (Randy). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kevin, Murray and Kelsey; her sister Sadie; brothers Jim and Robert (Betty); and a large extended family. BUTTERWORTH , Hazel M. April 20, 1925 - May 29, 2009 Hazel (nee Carlson) passed away peacefully at the age of 84 years at the Riverview Health Centre. Hazel is survived by Stan, her loving husband of sixty-one years and her sons and their families; Fred (Jennifer), their children Anthony (Carina), Ian (Amanda) and Erik and great-grandson Karl, of Calgary, and Gary (Tannis), their children Stephanie, Michael and Thomas. Also cherishing her memory are sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Doreen and Ray Mikulik, sisters-in-law Molly of Kenora, and Jean and brother-in-law Don Robson and her nieces, nephew and cousins as well as many good friends. Hazel was born at home in St. Vital; lived mostly in Winnipeg but also Vancouver, Saskatoon and Calgary. She was employed at Air Canada, Eaton's and The Bay. Her greatest pleasures were time spent with family and friends. In accordance with her wishes, Cremation has taken place. A gathering to remember Hazel will be held at Thomson "In the Park", 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, Winnipeg on Thursday, June 4 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of choice. HILL , Bruce Wilburn (The Boo) April 12, 1930 - May 31, 2009 It is with extreme sadness but great peace that the family of Bruce Hill announce his passing at the Peter Lougheed Hospital with his loving family by his side. He had been very ill and in and out of hospital since October. Bruce was born in Flaxcombe, Saskatchewan to William and May Hill. He attended school at Flaxcombe and went on to attend Berean Bible College in Calgary. He later attended SAIT where he obtained his fourth year in mechanics and went on to become a Master electrician with the highest marks that could be achieved at that time. He worked for various electrical companies and then formed his own companies, Continuous Electric, partnered in H & S Electric and most recently with his son Shaun in Advent Electric. Bruce was very proud of the fact that one of his sons and all of his grandsons carried on the tradition he started and became electricians as well. During his electrical career he worked oilfields and pipelines in Alberta and Manitoba in the electrical field. Bruce had an appreciation of music and sports, especially curling. He had a tremendous love of all animals, but had a special fondness for dogs. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tease and play practical jokes. He was a generous man, many times giving his last dollar to those who needed it. He touched the hearts of all who knew him. He always talked about moving back to the farm but could not bring himself to being that far from his treasured family. He is survived by his son Shaun and wife Lynne of Calgary, son Devon and wife Denise of High River, as well as his former wife Joan of Calgary; grandsons Mike, Bo, Clayton and Dexton as well as great-grandchildren and extended family members of Lynne's, Ashley, Graham, Andrea and the little light of his life precious Madison. Bruce was predeceased by his infant daughter Tara Lee, son Malcolm, parents William and May and brothers Hugh and Norman. We are comforted and grateful for Bruce being restored to faith in Christ before his passing making it easier for his family to bear. MACKAY , Richard King April 3, 1960 - May 31, 2009 It is with great sadness that we convey that Richard Mackay passed away peacefully at home in Calgary. Richard grew up in Kuwait and Alberta, homes reflective of his father's career in the oil and gas industry. Richard had special interests in photography, skiing and working on cars with a passion for foreign cars. His interests spurred him to pursue a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering at the School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. His special affinity with the School and his love of teaching led him back there as a professor. He is survived by his parents, Ian and Lorraine Mackay; his sister Tara (Alan); and brother Ian (Sandi). He will be deeply missed by his niece and nephew, the Mackay/Goplen clan and his friends. McBRIDE , Catherine Esther The McBride family is saddened to announce the death of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Catherine (Cathy) McBride at the age of 84 on May 30, 2009. She will be greatly missed by her five children and their families: Jack (Gwen), Mary (Roger), Bill (Evelyn), Len (Jude), Patricia; her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. Cathy is survived by her two brothers Leonard Hayes and Ken (Jeanette) Hayes of Calgary, her brothers-in-law, Bernie Wade and Fred Crawford, and sister-in-law Muriel Hayes. Cathy was predeceased by her husband Bob, her daughter Roseanne and her great-grandson Marshall. Cathy will also be missed by her many friends in Byemoor, Sedgewick, Camrose, Virginia Park Lodge and Dickinsfield Capital Care. The family is very grateful for the exceptional compassionate care given by the caregivers of 3D Dickinsfield during her years there. MERCER , Mary (Folk) September 12, 1906 - June 1, 2009 It is with fond memories and grateful hearts we announce that after a long and well lived life, our Mother is now at rest in her spiritual home. Mary was born in Leipsic, Ohio and immigrated with her family to Carmangay, Alberta in 1910. She attended Calgary Normal School and came to teach in Strathmore in 1927. Here she met her future husband, Walter Mercer and they were married in 1939. They farmed in the Nightingale district and raised three children. Mary was always very generous with her musical talents and maintained a very active role in church and community life. She was predeceased by her husband Walter (1954), son Charles (1999), and daughter Barbara (2007). Mary is survived by her daughter Lynne (Lorne) Fair of Strathmore; daughter-in-law Lucille Mercer of Calgary; grandsons Dale Mercer of London, England and Paul (Brenda) Mercer of Calgary; great-grandson Tristan Mercer. WOODARD , (nee Boutilier) Margaret Christina January 9, 1923 - May 30, 2009 Margaret passed away unexpectedly at the Foothills Hospital at the age of 86. She was raised on a farm on the outskirts of Calgary in the Balzac area. A very proud Western Canadian and Calgarian, she loved the friendly people of the West. During WWII she served as a secretary at No. 31 E.F.T.S. De Winton where she met her future husband, Ray, a pilot trainee. She was most proud and satisfied of being a mother to her children Sandra, Jerelyn, Brad, and Brent. Margaret loved people. She had a joy of living and her friendly social smile was very contagious. With Ray, she square danced for fifty-one years with the Richmond Revellers and the Prairie Winds Club, and had much fun and many wonderful relationships through square dancing. She worked in the school system for years and retired from working in the library at E.P. Scarlett. She enjoyed the family cottage at Fairmont, local holidays and trips abroad. More than anything she enjoyed people and visiting wherever she went. She was blessed with grand and great-grandchildren. A Service to celebrate her life will be held a Living Spirit United Church (629 - 49 Avenue S.W.) at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.
