ALLEN, Gordon Edward It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Gordon Edward Allen on May 28, 2009 at the age of 83. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 54 years Leonora "Lee" (Brownstein), his son Samuel "Sandy" and his daughter-in-law Pam, who was more like the daughter he never had. He was a special friend who loved to laugh and joke with his grandchildren Emily and Josh. The moment he saw them his smile became infectious. He will be missed by his many nieces and nephews. He believed in helping others and was the co-founder along with his wife, Weight Watchers for Ottawa & Eastern Ontario. DONNELLY, Elizabeth Barbara (Lucy) At Princeton Hospital, B.C. on May 28, 2009, in her 55th year. Beautiful and beloved daughter of Rosamond and the late Albert Donnelly. Loving wife of Bob Lucy and cherished mother of Jacob and Jonathan, Hedley, B.C. Dear sister of Randle (Jane), Renfrew, Patricia Asquini (Michael), Kanata, Jonathan, North Battleford, Sask., and Pauline, Renfrew. She will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Barb was one of a kind. She fought through many challenges to obtain her Bachelor of Social Work from Saskatchewan Federated Indian College. A very talented artist, she produced many striking works celebrating her native heritage. Her quiet demeanour masked a very strong-willed and spiritual individual, and her smile could light up a room. We will miss her greatly. There will be no funeral at her request. EVANS, Edith Caroline (nee Meadows) May 20, 1914 - May 25, 2009 After a valiant struggle with COPD, Carol died peacefully in her 96th year, on Monday May 25 at Thorntonview Nursing Home, Oshawa. Beloved wife of the late Bill (2004). Loving mother of Cathy Evans (Ted Baker) and grandmother to Celine and Evelyne Baker. Loving aunt to Ruth Barker and Bob Meadows. Carol was born in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan. Her parents then moved back to Cobourg, Ontario where she lived until she trained to be a Registered Nurse. She graduated from Oshawa General Hospital in 1937. She worked as a nurse in one of the munition factories in Ajax during the war and later she worked in the infirmary in General Motors, and then as a private nurse. She and Bill owned and operated Evans' Grocery Store on Jarvis Street for 40 years. Grateful thanks to the kind and compassionate staff at Thorntonview Nursing Home in Oshawa. Special thanks to the staff who was there with Mom on her last evening. They are to be commended for their understanding, love and support during Mom's time with them. Friends will be received at the Armstrong Funeral Home, 124 King Street, East, Oshawa on Sunday, May 31st from 2pm until time of the Memorial Service in the Chapel at 3pm. GAVIN, Robert Bruce "Bob" RCMP March 19, 1930- May 28, 2009 With great sadness we announce the passing of Bob Gavin. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Ottawa Heart Institute. He leaves behind his beloved wife Shirley (Stewart). Loving father of Linda, Stewart (Paula), Nancy (Paul) and Cam (Paulina). Bob was the very proud grandfather of Max, Jenna, Taylor, Karelia, Kael, Gavin, Blake, Anika, Delzel and Ava Paisley. Dear brother of Nancye Killen (Ted) and Sandra Yeager (Herb). He will be sadly missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Bob was proud to be a member of the RCMP. He dedicated 35 years of service and retired as a Superintendent. KHAN, Captain Firasat Ali Passed away quietly at home, May 14 after a few weeks illness and was buried in Beechwood Cemetery May 15 following prayers at the Ottawa Masjid Mosque. Son of Vilayet Mustajir Khan, Zaminder, and Begum Vilayet Khan of Rampur, U.P., India. He is survived by his wife, Joan Matthews Ali Khan. Firasat, born l921, was also from Rampur, formerly a Princely State of India. -Firasat served in the British Army 1940-46 and as ADC to His Highness the Nabob of Rampur, 1947-49. Subsequently he was engaged in agriculture and big game hunting until he came to Canada in l970 to marry Joan (Scotty) of Ottawa. He was a true sportsman in every sense of the word. As a young man he excelled in field hockey and polo but was more known as a tiger hunter and led many shikars in the forests of India. Of Pathan stock, he was proud, independent ,fearless and possessed a commanding presence. He was known to friends and acquaintances in India/Pakistan as "Lord Firasat". He will be particularly remembered for his knowledge of Rampur families and the stories\anecdotes associated with them. He was highly respected for his high standard of the Urdunguage and his love of Urdu and Persian poets. Firasat loved elegance and was determined to make fashion and not to follow it. LAMONT, Archie G.W., B.A.Sc., M.Sc. Died May 21, 2009 at Sunnybrook Hospital (Veteran's Wing; Archie was a lieutenant-engineer in the RCNVR during WWII). Born 1921, April 9. Leaves wife, Claire Jones; two children, Dale (Lorne Perry) and Jim (Marina O'Grady-Lamont); three loving grandchildren, Alissa and Laurence Perry and Catherine Lamont. Archie was a brilliant engineer and artisan, a humble man of great integrity who loved life and never ceased to be creative and curious about the world and committed to the belief that people working together could do great things. He and Claire split their time between Picton and Toronto after he retired from Hatch where he was a co-founder and Founding Vice President. A service will be held at ST. ANDREW'S UNITED CHURCH, 117 Bloor Street East, Toronto on Tuesday June 2 at 1 p.m. Visitation one hour prior. Interment Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Loving husband for 67 years of Adeline Annie (Barkley), formerly of Echo Bay, Ontario, now residing at Fairfield Manor in Kanata. Beloved father of Ross and his wife Ginette of Orleans and Rev. Wayne and his wife Marie of Lindsay, ON. Proud Grandfather of Jean-Ann, Lori, Suzanne, Jaelle, Michael, Peter and Phillip. Great-grandfather of Beth and Kurt, Joshua and Shelby, Cassandra and Isabelle, and Brody. His cremated remains will be interred in Hilton Beach Cemetery, St. Joseph's Island, ON at a later date. RICHARDSON, Margaret Peacefully at home, at age 92, with family by her side, on May 25th, 2009. Margaret May Richardson (nee Shank), born in Markham, May 1st, 1917 to Eli Shank and Berna Williamson. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Horace John Richardson. Loving mother of Thomas (Carol Laroche), Jane and Robert (Beverley Burgess). Grandmother of Stephanie (James Hewitt), Joanna (Max Turner), David and Michael. Great grandmother of Beatrice May, Jack, Barrett, Sam, Julia and Natasha. Survived by her brother Robert Shank (Luella) and sister Ruby Cross. Predeceased by brothers Albert and Oscar and sister Mary. Margaret (Mother, Gran, Great Gran) graduated from Wellesley Hospital Nursing School in 1939, then worked on Manitoulin Island and in Engelhart, where she met her future husband. Mother had many interests, but above all she loved the outdoors, in particular birds and trees. Her greatest accomplishment was the 'farm', built, landscaped and lovingly cared for with her husband and children. She enjoyed summers there - gardening, watching for wildlife, sitting on the porch. Also an avid reader, Mother had a superb memory and paid great attention to detail. She was a skilled leather craftsperson, and an exceptional golfer with two holes-in-one to her credit. SQUIRES, John Douglas (Jack) RCAF - DOT - ATAC 1934-2009 On May 29, 2009, at 74 with his family at his side, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure. Jack will be treasured always by his beloved wife of 54 years Geraldine (Gerry) nee Farrar, his daughter Cathy, son Douglas (Bev) and daughter Susan (Paul Greene). Devoted and loving Poppa to Katie, Emma, Ethan, Justin and Liam. Special Grandpa to Chris and Erinn. Born in Montreal, August 24, 1934 and predeceased by parents John Squires and Irene Stone. Jack is also survived by sisters Phyllis Cowan and Jean Kelly Hanna, cousin Jean Hill (Ted), sister-in-law Wilma Gibson (Merritt) and many nieces and nephews. Jack joined the RCAF as a pilot in 1952 and was posted to Grostenquin, France in 1956 from where he and Gerry travelled Europe. In 1961, he moved to the Dept of Transport, and became a captain of the Executive Flight flying the prime minister, cabinet, and dignitaries around the world. It was his dream job and he often said "I can't believe they pay me to do this!" Jack later became VP of the Air Transport Assoc. of Canada. Founding member of Highlands Golf Club, President of Amberwood Golf and Country Club, builder of a family cottage at Pike Lake and winemaker extraordinaire. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Ottawa Civic Hospital for their compassionate support and care. MacLAREN, Ronald B. Passed away gently and peacefully at Minoru Residence in Richmond, B.C. on May 21, 2009. He is survived by his wife Jane (of fifty-six years), his sons: Robert (Ellen), Philip (Moyra), Andrew and grandchildren: Scott, Alyson, Jake, Amy, Ian and Stuart; and sister, Betty (John) in Montreal. Ron was born in Vancouver on November 20, 1920 and moved to Montreal at the age of thirteen. After graduating from Montreal High, Ron joined the RCAF and during WWII served in Halifax and Iceland. Following the war, Ron returned to Montreal, and subsequently took positions in Toronto and Winnipeg. In 1953 Ron and his bride moved to Vancouver and then to Richmond in 1958 to raise his growing family. Ron was involved with his community: South Arm United Church, 5th Richmond Scouting, Meals-on-Wheels and the YVR Airport Green Coats. The family would like to thank the staff of Minoru Residence for the many years of care provided to Ron. A celebration of his life encompassing family and friends will be held on June 14, 2009. McLAUGHLIN, Anne - 1943-2009 We are grieved to announce the peaceful, if sudden death of Anne McLaughlin (RN), in Durban, South Africa April 19, 2009, age sixty-five; eldest daughter of the late James McLaughlin and the late Clotilde Baudouin of Montreal. She is predeceased by her brother Robert in 2000. A true and dedicated mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, Anne was a keen amateur genealogist and dedicated gardener who cultivated her relationships with the same zeal she did her saplings. The loss of her easy laughter and extraordinary generosity of spirit is deeply felt. Left behind are daughters Genevieve Rich of Montreal and Jessica Rich, with grandchildren Oscar and Maxwell, of Durban. Siblings Paul (Debbie), John (Sheila) and Louise also join with a large extended family and many friends to mourn Anne's passing. OBITUARY JEAN IRENE OLSEN Jean Irene Olsen of Saskatoon Passed away on May 25, 2009 at St. Paul's Palliative Care Unit. Jean was born March 12, 1941 in Montreal to Jurgis (George) and Agnes Rutelis. An only child, she spent her childhood with her cousins Eddy and Linda. Jean married her Verdun high school sweetheart and true love, Eddy Olsen on June 9, 1962. They moved from Montreal to Pincourt, Quebec where they raised their two daughters, Toby and Kelly. In 1977, the family moved to Saskatoon where Jean and Ed began to visit Waskesiu for summer holidays. They purchased a trailer and loved camping at the Narrows for many years until they bought their cabin in 2000. In March 2001 Ed passed away and Jean was left to demonstrate strength and courage to her daughters. Jean continued to spend her summers at Waskesiu with her children and grandchildren. She loved fishing and going to the beach with her grandchildren. She loved watching their dance, gymnastics, hockey and ball games. She was their number one fan. Jean loved dancing and walking along the river with her dog Maggie. She knit the most beautiful sweaters and knew how to serve a great Sunday supper. Jean was a social butterfly who easily made friends and kept them entertained with her stories. Jean is survived by her daughters Toby Arnold (Chris) and Kelly Schlosser (Barclay), grandchildren Cydney and Shelby Arnold and Kennedy and Wyatt Schlosser. Her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Shirley and Jack Smith also survive her along with their children Alan and Carolyn and their families. Jean is also survived by many good friends, especially John Frey (and his daughters) who made our mother smile once again. Thank you for that John, you are truly a gentleman. At Jean's request there will be no funeral. A private family memorial and inurnment will occur. KIRK , Murray Wallace It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Murray on May 25, 2009 at the age of 47 years. Murray was born in Edmonton, Alberta but lived most of his life in Calgary. He graduated from SAIT and worked as a chef; then as a manager of Money Mart and later as a construction worker. The love of his life was his partner Gail Annand and his dog Gypsy. Murray lived a full and loving life, giving caring support to his many friends and family. His house was a refuge for his friends in time of need. All of us have lost a wonderful person.
