Mrs. Doris Ives Tappenden August 7, 1913 - February 25, 2009 TAPPENDEN, Doris Ives 95, Lake Echo, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 25, 2009, in Halifax. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Charles William and Catherine Jane (Smith) MacLeod. Doris is survived by daughter, Marlene Hatt; Doris' favorite son-in-law, Bill Richardson; grandchildren, Stephen (Darlene), Peter (Dale), Linda-Anne (Gary), Christopher (Crystal); great-grandchildren, Curtis, Travis, Sarah, Amy, Ryan, Melissa, Michael and Tristan; great great-grandchildren, Tyler and Landon. She spent all her working life in retail, managing both Reitman's and Sally Shops in Sydney, and later as Department manager of Ladies Wear for Zellers in Dartmouth. Doris was also a member of St. Augustine's Anglican Church in Lake Echo. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 69 years, Jospeh Richard "Jerry" Tappenden; sisters, Lillian, Jean, Edith and brother, Cedric "Mac". Visitation will take place 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday, February 28, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Funeral service to be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 28, in St. Augustine's Anglican Church, 2 Ponderosa Dr., Lake Echo, Rev. Carson Baxter and Rev. Debra Burleson officiating. Mrs. Jennie E. Simpson March 26, 1931 - February 25, 2009 Simpson, Jennie E. The death of Mrs. Jennie Elizabeth (Thomas) Simpson of Saint John West, wife of the late Fred G. Simpson occurred at her residence on February 25, 2009 after a lengthy illness. Born in Saint John on March 26, 1931 she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Ella Thomas. Mrs. Simpson owned Your Candle Shop from 1971 – 1990 and then worked with her sons in the family businesses. Jennie was very active in many facets of the Church of the Good Shepherd, sang in the Church, and started the Rainbow programs for young people in West Saint John. Jennie is survived by two sons; Andrew (Wanda Cuthbert) Simpson, and Douglas (Sharon Ann Eldridge) Simpson, four brothers; James Thomas, Leonard Thomas, Paul Thomas, and Hubert Thomas, special grandchildren Brittany and Luke, several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband Fred, she was predeceased by brothers Vernon, Sammy, Robert, Harold and by sister Millie Hickey. She was also predeceased by half-brothers Earl, Charles, Lee, Howard, Ray, and half-sister Bessie Bullock. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Castle “Fallsview” Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave. Saint John West (634-1701). By request, there will be no visiting at the funeral home. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 1 p.m. from the Church of the Good Shepherd. Private family interment in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. Immediately following the service, a time of fellowship will take place in the church hall. Ms. Catherine Gormek August 31, 1956 - February 27, 2009 Catherine Elizabeth Mary Gormek It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Cathie Gormek on Friday, February 27, 2009. She died peacefully in her sleep at home at the age of 52. Her loves in life were her children to which she dedicated her life, and she will be sorely missed by her friends and family. Beloved mother of Jennifer, Stephanie, Michelle and Katherine, (predeceased by her infant son John in 1991). She was a devoted daughter who was predeceased by her father Francis Morrison in 1980, and survived by her mother Dorothy Morrison. HOPF, Ruth 2009-03-03 Mrs. Ruth Hopf passed away at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre surrounded by her family on February 28, 2009. Born on October 2, 1926 in Heidelberg, Germany, she immigrated to Canada on December 19, 1953. Ruth lived in Red Lake, Ontario and for the past 31 years she has resided in Pickle Lake, Ontario. Ruth worked at the Red Lake Hospital as a nurse’s aide, where she enjoyed working on the pediatrics ward and she was also an active union steward. She worked as a cashier at the Hudson Bay Store in Pickle Lake until her retirement. Her hobbies were collecting dolls, Blue Mountain Pottery and crocheting. Many friends have received gifts of her handiwork. Ruth is survived by her husband of 59 years Walter Hopf; children Elvira (Rudy - deceased) Knaack, Karl Hopf, Sylvia (Keith) Jenken, Debra (Norman) Sowinski, Esther (Richard) Brown, Mercedes Hopf; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren and brother George (Ursula) Holfelder. JEFFREY, Reta Ardis 2009-03-03 Reta Ardis Jeffrey passed away peacefully March 1, 2009 at Pioneer Ridge with family by her side. Born January 12, 1925 in Grandview, Manitoba. Her original home is presently a part of the Grandview Museum. She moved to Port Arthur in 1946 and was employed at Western Grocers. She became a member of St. Paul‘s United Church. Survived by daughter Deborah (Dave) Baker; son Ralph (Shelby) Wiebe; grandchildren: Crystal and Robyn Baker, Jeff and Scott Shumka and Isaac Wiebe; sister Verna (Murray) Tench of Winnipeg. Predeceased by her infant daughter Rhonda; daughter Jacqueline; brother Cleo and sister Beatrice. VUKOVICH, Matthew 2009-03-03 Mr. Matthew (Matt) Vukovich, age 75 years, passed from this life to the next with his beloved son Mark by his side. He was married to the former Carol Johnson and they would have celebrated 50 years of marriage on August 15, 2009. Matt‘s family always came first in his life. His students at Lakeview and Hillcrest High Schools respected him as he was always fair and honest with them. Teaching wasn‘t just a job for him, he truly cared about each and every student. He and good friend Bill Boquist coached championship football teams in the early 1960‘s. Matt attended St. Andrew‘s School, P.A.C.I. and graduated from the University of Western Ontario where he played for the Western Mustangs hockey team. In his teens he played hockey for the Port Arthur Flyers and later for the Bearcats. Matt loved spending time at the camp he built at Dog Lake; fishing, boating, the famous “1st of July Brunch”, and just relaxing with visiting relatives, friends and great neighbours. For over 25 years he was on the Board of Directors of Harbour Youth Services, where he served as President. After a career of over 30 years with the Lakehead Board of Education as a teacher and Vice Principal, he enjoyed 20 years of retirement. Sharing morning coffee with friends Bill, Peter and Joe at McDonald‘s was a great way to start the day; followed by lunch at the Scan. He was predeceased by his parents Kate and Mark, beloved daughter Mary, cousin Nick Vukovich, in-laws Eric and Winnie Johnson, sisters-in-law Myra Westman and Gail Suttle. Matt will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by wife Carol and son Mark. Survived also by the Vukovich family (Toronto) Joe and Isabelle, their children Natalia (Andrew), Nicholas, Matthew (Katie), and Daniel; Marilyn Arnone (Pat) and family; Mandica Vukovich, Tony Vukovich and family; aunt Mary and Jim Gospodinoff (California) and their family Cathy (Rance) and children and George (Ping); Carol‘s family Lorrie Suttle (daughter Kimberley), Barry Suttle Jr. (Sandy, son Eric); cousin Glen Saari (Carolyn) of Arizona. Mrs. Gwendoline Ruth Hanna May 28, 1922 - February 23, 2009 HANNA, Gwendoline Gwen Hanna passed away on February 23, 2009. She was born in England on May 28, 1922 and was married to Mitchell Hanna in 1943 in England. She came to Canada in 1945 and settled in Winnipeg for 11 years, then moved to Thunder Bay in 1956. In September of 2000 Gwen moved to Edmonton to be closer to her sons and their families. Gwen was predeceased by her husband 1983. She belonged to Greenstone Rebecca Lodge #86 which she enjoyed being a member, also was an active member of the St. Lukes Anglican Altar Guild. Gwen is survived by her three sons; Garth (Jacqueline) and their family Scott and Derek of Kelowna, BC; Barry (Maggie) and their family Trevor, Dawn, Melanie, Jeff and Rebekka; Richard (Patricia) and their family Jocelyn and Josh; Gwen is also remembered by her 20 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews in England and France. A celebration of Gwen's life will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Glenwood Funeral Home, south of Wye Road on Range Road 232, Sherwood Park. Cremation will follow. The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to staff of the 2nd floor Good Samaritan Southgate for the care and friendship given to Gwen over the past 7 years. Mr Stanley Edward Wiley July 5, 1928 - February 24, 2009 It is with sorrow that the family of Stanley Edward Wiley announce his passing on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 after a hard fought battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his mother Lottie and father John; five brothers Lloyd (Merle), Howard (Eva), Ira (Shirley), Irvin and Ray (Irene); two sisters Marjorie (Doug) Goulstone and Shirley Huber. Stan is survived by sister Eileen Gray; brother Roy (Hertha); sister-in-law Winn; brother-in-law Bill Huber; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and wonderful friends. Stan was born July 5, 1928 on the farm in Langbank, SK and was one of ten siblings. He moved to Regina to begin working at Sears, where he spent 35 years and made many friends. Stan will be remembered as a kind, gentle person who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed family gatherings over the years, the last of which being his 80th birthday celebration in July. Stan will be sadly missed by all whose lives he touched. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at Regina Funeral Home, Hwy #1 East, Regina, SK on Sunday, March 1, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date. Mr. Michael Alan Schaus August 19, 1987 - February 22, 2009 SCHAUS, Michael Alan 21. It is with utmost sadness that we announce that our loving son, Michael Alan Schaus suddenly passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2009, at home. Michael was born in Halifax in 1987. Michael was an outstanding athlete who specialized in Sprint, Canoe-Kayak. Michael was heavily involved in paddling at Banook Canoe Club his whole life. His successful training at Banook allowed him to compete nationally for 11 years, and internationally for the past four years. In 2005 he made the Canadian Sprint Junior Worlds team, where he placed in the top 10 in the world, in both of his events. He was a ten time National Champion and four time National Championship record holder. In 2008 he led Banook Canoe Club to their second Club National Burgee. Michael was a Dalhousie University student with three years into his double major of Biology and Economics, and had recently made the Dean's List. Michael is survived by his parents, Anne Marie and Tim Schaus; sister, Erin; brothers, Andrew and Adam (Jennifer LeBlanc); niece, Mackenzie; and his incredible buddy, and best friend, Laura Tupper Ring. He is also survived by both grandmothers, Mary MacKenzie and Iveagh Schaus, and many more aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 6:30-9 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Mr. Robert Francis Fraser June 18, 1922 - February 22, 2009 Robert Francis Fraser passed away Friday February 20, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Hospice in Thunder Bay after a short illness. Born June 18, 1922 in Fort William, he graduated from FWCI before attending McGill University in Montreal. His studies were interrupted in 1943, when he joined the Canadian Army (Artillery), eventually rising to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and serving overseas in WWII. Discharged in 1945, Robert resumed his studies at McGill, attaining a BSc. Architecture in 1948. It was in Montreal that he met Lois Whyte, his future wife whom he married in 1948. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage. Bob and partners Andy Mickelson and Bob Browne practiced architecture for many years across Northwestern Ontario, leaving a legacy of buildings in the community. Predeceased by wife Lois, brother Grant and sister Elaine, Bob is lovingly remembered by sons Robert (Shelley Wood) and James, both of Ottawa, and daughters Jill (David Young) of Toronto and Susan (Glen Wilson) of Thunder Bay, grandchildren Jennifer, Ellen (Dan Groulx), Adrienne and Alex, and great-grandson Coady, all of Ottawa. He will also be greatly missed by grandpets Koyuk and Bliss. Bob enjoyed many happy summers at Sunnyside Beach with his family, friends and neighbours. A memorial celebration of his life will be held in the chapel of Jenkens Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 24th, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Bert Vancook officiating. It is with deep sadness the family announces the passing of our father, brother and uncle on February 22, 2009, in Twin Oaks Hospital in Musquodoboit Harbour. He was a son of the late Herbert and Daisy (Barry) Doyle. He is survived by his children, Frank (Darlene) Doyle, Kingston; Sharon (James) Sullivan, Dartmouth; Lawrence Doyle, Dartmouth; Linda (Larry) Gladue, Salmon River Bridge; Laura Greener, Windsor. He is also survived by sisters, Daisy Mason, Bedford; Margaret (Lewis) Murphy, Halifax; Dorothy Doyle, Dartmouth; Helen MacIsaac, Bedford and brothers, Joseph Doyle, Halifax and James Doyle, Zurick, Ont. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Inglis) Doyle; sisters, Francis and Eileen; brother, Louis and daughter-in-law, Donna (Shears) Doyle. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Before retiring in 1993, he worked for the Department of National Defence (Magazine Hill) for 50 years. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Musquodoboit Health Clinic and Twin Oaks Hospital, and would like to convey a special thanks to Deborah Mosher who was his Northwood Home Care provider for the past four plus years. The remains have been cremated. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 24, at 2 p.m. with a one hour visitation prior to the service in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Mr. Trevor John Owen March 27, 1962 - February 24, 2009 It is with broken hearts that the family of Trevor John Owen announce his passing on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 after his brave struggle with cancer. Trevor was born March 27, 1962 in Prince Albert, SK and attended West Central, Wesmor and Carlton High Schools. In his teens, Trevor discovered his love of anything mechanical and started his automotive career at Super Action Service in Prince Albert. In November 1986 Trevor met his best friend, Lisa (Tameling). The two became inseparable and married the following year. After their marriage they relocated to Strasbourg and then to Regina. In November 1987, Trevor started as a mechanic at Canadian Tire South. He worked various positions there until achieving his dream job as Service Manager. The position he held at the time of his diagnosis. Trevor was active in the community and anything his boys were involved in. He spent numerous years as a scout leader and soccer coach. He was also the neighbourhood “go-to guy”, as his garage was always stocked with most anything mechanical or woodworking related. Trevor will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Lisa; their boys, Dallas, Mitchell, and Brooks; parents John and Myrna; brother Brad (Tracey) and children Darrellynn, Caitlin and Taylor; sister Jackie (Kip) Walters and their children Jade and Meghan; in-laws Joe and Marj Tameling; brothers-in-law Calvin (Jean) and their children Josh, Jade and Reece; Trevor (Shelley) and their children Brittney, Taylor and Alesha; and Regan; special friends and neighbours the Burns, Ballantyne, Temsland and Dumaine families; godchildren Brittney, Jade and Tanner; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. JONES, Muriel Eileen April 02, 1917 - February 23, 2009 Muriel passed away with loving family at her side. Our mother (Nain) lived a full life: she worked in banks in London, England before heading to Hong Kong in 1941 to be married. Early years were spent in Canton, Lantau, and Cheung Chow. After a year in Yorkshire, the family immigrated to Canada spending 3 years in Cookshire, PQ. Dorval, PQ was the next stop until 1969 when Mom and Dad moved to Ottawa. In 1979 Dad retired and they moved to Victoria where Dad suddenly died. Mom attended St Aidan's United Church, played bridge often, and loved to garden. She enjoyed visits from grandchildren and family. She moved into the Kensington and finally the Parkwood Court. Here she enjoyed the comfort and care until her death. All the family wants to thank everyone at the Kensington and Parkwood for making mom's final years and days so comfortable. HANSEN, Margaret (Peggi) Joan October 25, 1930 - March 1, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peggi on Sunday, March 1, 2009 in Calgary at the age of 78 years. Peggi was born in Hamilton and moved to Calgary in 1956. She was a loving wife, a wonderful mother, and a caring, devoted grandma. She had a zest for life, travelling and loved playing bridge. She had a quick wit and charming personality which endeared her to her numerous friends. She put a smile on the face of all who came in contact with her, and she left a legacy of warmth, kindness, and generosity. Her courage and strength were an inspiration to her family and many friends. She is survived and will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Alden; her children Geoffrey, Michele (Graham), Suzanne (Mark); her stepchildren Phil (Cathy), Tom (Wanda), Susan, Carol (Rob), Doug (Nicole); her grandchildren Danielle (Craig), Phil, Kristen, Durham, Natasha; nineteen step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and eight step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Georgie (Jack) and Theresa, her brother Ted (Margaret); as well as other extended family and friends. Ralph was born and raised on a farm near Bromhead, Saskatchewan. He was employed for thirty years by Imperial Oil (Esso) and enjoyed fifteen years of retirement. She earned her wings surrounded by her loving family at her bedside. Meeting Mom at heaven's gate is her husband and best friend of 46 years Richard “Dick“ Harwood (2007). Born in Chatham in 1939, the only daughter of the late Ruby (Dawson) and George Congdon. Diane's first career was as an elementary school teacher, later she dedicated her life to the church as a secretary, treasurer and then acted as a Honorary Lay Worship Leader. She is a member of St. Andrew's United Church, Chatham, and was involved in the United Women's Church League. Cherished mother of Elizabeth “Liz“ Diane Myers and her husband William “Bill“ of Chatham, Melissa Annette Louzon and her husband Rod of Chatham. Treasured Nana to Josh, Andrew, Alesha Myers, and Taylor and Madison Louzon. Dear daughter in law to Margaret Harwood Studnicka. Mr. Kenneth William Hartlen January 5, 1924 - February 26, 2009 85, Dartmouth. A wonderful father, husband and grandfather has left us with the memory of his beautiful smile on Thursday, February 26, 2009, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII. Born January 5, 1924, in Westphal, he was a son of the late William Verner and Alice Margaret (Bainbridge) Hartlen. A veteran of the Second World War, Ken saw service in Italy, Belgium and Holland with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. After the war he worked for Jim Conrad and was later employed for 37 1/2 years at CFB Shearwater in the C.E. section, until his retirement in 1986. He was a devoted member of Woodlawn United Church, a member of the Men's Club and a long-standing member of the Woodlawn Golden K Club until illness prevented his participation. He will be fondly remembered for his devotion to family, his kindness, friendship and willingness to lend a helping hand. Ken enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing cards, family gatherings, repairing small engines, gardening and had a keen interest in local politics. Ken is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marie (Farquharson) Hartlen; son, Ralph (Suzanne), Saint John, N.B.; daughters, Sandra (Richard), Coldbrook; Pat (Bill), Tatamagouche; Kathy, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Chris (Amy), Andrea, Meghan, Ryan and Shawn. He is also survived by his brothers, Lorne, Dartmouth; Frank, Shubenacadie; Arthur, Dartmouth. He was predeceased by his sisters, Isabelle Woodworth, Elsie Hartlen and brother, Clarence. Ly is the daughter of the late Hildegrade and the late Oskar Munk; granddaughter of the late Wilhelm and the late Olga Marie Mittelsteadt and the late Eduard and the late Elisaveta Munk.
