MELS, Ferdinand (Vern) - After a long and courageous fight with cancer, Vern died at Norfolk General Hospital Tuesday January 20, 2009, of Vanessa, in his 85th year surrounded by his loving family and wife,. Beloved husband for 60 years to Yolande (Declerck). Loving father of Nancy (and Bob) Kozak, Larry (and Ellen), David (and Liz). Proud Grandpa of Jennifer (Michael) Beal, Jeff Kozak (Jessica), Brent (Brooke), Tara (Scott), David Mels, Sarah Mels (Matt), Dakota Mels; great grandchildren Allie, and Ryan Beal. Dear brother of Mary Woynarski. Vern will be sadly missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased by brothers Ben and Leon. Vern farmed all his life, tobacco and later ginseng, only retiring 10 years ago. Vern loved fishing, playing cards, going on vacation, especially cruising, was an avid fan of hockey and was a member of the Belgium and German Halls in Delhi. STEENBERGEN (VandenBerg) Bernice On January 9, 2009, Bernice Steenbergen was suddenly called home into the presence of Jesus her Saviour after a 4 1/2 year struggle with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension. She was born in Lindsay, Ontario, on August 31, 1958. Bernice is lovingly remembered by her husband Henry and her children Melinda (Sean), Dan and Kristen, Josh (Kristin) and Ben. Also by her parents Bert and Marie VandenBerg and her siblings Marilyn and Dick Kuiperij, Phil and Jannetta VandenBerg, and Bruce and Sharon VandenBerg. Also by her mother-in- law Alice Steenbergen and brothers and sisters-in-law Bill and Karen Steenbergen, Peter and Jan Steenbergen, Fanny and Nick Geleynse, Marg and Jess Terpstra, Alina and Ralph Wigboldus, and Hilma Steenbergen. Also by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sister Patty VandenBerg and father-in-law Lubbert Steenbergen. Bernice had a real gift for making people feel loved and accepted and also an amazing gift of artistic creativity. Bernice Steenbergen's body was laid to rest on January 15, 2009 at a graveside service led by Pastor Bert Slofstra at Alto Rest Cemetery, Red Deer, Alberta. FREEMAN, Mildred Mary (nee Horslen) - Born May 26, 1914, passed away peacefully at the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, Burlington on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, in her 95th year. Mother enjoyed a very long, happy and full life. Daughter of the late Arthur Horslen and Ida May Graham. Mildred was the beloved wife of the late Richard Gordon Freeman for 42 years. She was a loving mother to Douglas and his wife Freda of Toronto, James Thornton (deceased) and his wife Eileen of Belleville, Gloria Connolly and her husband Joseph of Barrie, John and his wife Anne of Oakville, Wayne and his wife Anne of Burlington, Paul and his wife Joanne of Burlington. Her nine grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren brought her great joy. She is also survived by her sister Bertha Fetterly of Lindsay and her brother Robert Horslen of Belleville. CAPORICCI, Damiano - Passed away at the Welland Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 in his 76th year. Beloved husband of Letizia (nee Giangaspero). He worked at Wabasso Cotton Mill as a stationary engineer for 35 years until his retirement in 1985 and was an active member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church and Seniors Club. FRAZER, Ken - Suddenly as the result of a tragic accident on Tuesday January 20, 2009 at the age of 54. Beloved husband of Debbie for 32 years. STREMLAW, Evette Mary (nee Moreau) Currently of St. Catharines, Ontario and originally from Niagara Falls, Ontario, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2009 at Pleasant Manor in Virgil, Ontario and went home in her 88th year to meet her Lord. We all wish her the joy and happiness that her beautiful soul deserves. She was the loving and caring mother of: John of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Sandra of Vancouver, B.C., and Sharon and Mark of St. Catharines, Ontario. Loving grandmother to Greg of Ottawa, Susan of Monessen, P.A. and Andrew and Robbie of Vancouver, B.C. Great-grandmother to Kristin and Michael of Ottawa, Ontario and Mikaela and Owen of Monessen, P.A. and Levon, Garrett and Wyatt of Hensall, Ontario. Evette spent a lifetime in the love of her church, her family and in volunteer service to her communities and at her parishes at St. Denis in St. Catharines and St. Patrick's in Niagara Falls. She was a long time member of the Catholic Women's League, taught Sunday school and sponsored several in the attainment of the priesthood and donated to numerous overseas Catholic children's Charities. She spent 17 years working with the Women's Auxiliary Service at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, working with the Meals on Wheels program and driving for the Children's Aid Society. Her extensive volunteer efforts were honoured both at the local and Provincial level for her many years of dedicated service. A memorial service will be held in the spring where Evette will be laid to rest with her husband John at Lundy's Lane Cemetery, Niagara Falls, Ontario. The family would like to express their thanks to all of you who loved her and cared about her. VOEGE, Edwin George - (March 17, 1917 - January 21, 2009) in his 92nd year, peacefully at home under the watchful care of his wife of 64 years, Helen. STEWART, Ronald George, “Pete - “Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter - silvered wings” August 20, 1937 - January 19, 2009 Predeceased by his sister Suzanne, Father George, Mother Alma and brother Kenzie. Ron will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his family; Wife Tina, children Barbara Stewart (Victoria, B.C.), Shirley Stewart, Terry Ratkovsky (Niagara-on-the- Lake, Ont.), Elli (Craig) Cullen (Rockwood, Ont.), Cameron (Jane) Stewart (Guelph, Ont.), Peter Stewart (Toronto, Ont.) and seven grandchildren. Ron is also survived by sisters Joan (Larry) Clark (Vancouver, B.C.) and Diane (Stan) Friesen (St. Catharines, Ont.). Ron had a long, satisfying career in aviation, beginning with the RCAF in 1956 during which time he completed an operational tour on his beloved CF-86 Sabre on 427 Squadron in Zweibrucken, Germany. He then gained employment with Air Canada in 1965, retiring as a Boeing 747 Captain in 1997. In his retirement he took up the game of golf and, according to Ron, achieved no great success as a golfer. However, he enjoyed the game immensely, made possible by his close group of “golf buddies”. A celebration of Ron's life will take place for friends and family at the Niagara- on-the-Lake Golf Club on Saturday January 31st, 2-5 pm. The family would like to thank Dr. M. Samosh and Dr. K. She was born in Chatham, daughter of the late Olive (Wilkes) Letts. Nancy was music director for the North Chatham Branch and the Chatham District of the Community of Christ Church. In the community, she was soloist for the Laudate Dominum Choir and later sang with the Chatham Glee Club. Nancy was an Elder and former Pastor of the Community of Christ Church, Faubert Dr., Chatham. Beloved wife of Douglas Moor. RYGIELSKI, Leon 2009-01-22 RYGIELSKI Mr. Leon Rygielski, age 92 years, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph‘s Hospital on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 after a brief illness. Leon was born on November 2, 1916 in Poland and he immigrated to this area in 1951 followed by his wife Alice shortly thereafter. He was employed at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital retiring after 25 years of service. Leon was a long time member of Trinity United Church. In past years with his wife Alice they enjoyed travelling and spent many summer holidays and weekends in their trailer home at nearby lakes and parks. Leon is survived by niece Marion Roggenbuck and nephew Gerhard Tode and their families and other extended family in Germany. Leon was predeceased by his wife Alice in 1997 and other relatives in Poland and Germany. Cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Interment will take place at a later date in Riverside Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Leon may be made to a charity of choice. BELL, Lois (nee Elliot). Passed away peacefully at the Lakeshore General Hospital, Pointe-Claire, Qc. on January 14, 2009 after many challenging years with Alzheimer's. She is fondly remembered by her husband Doug of nearly fifty-seven years, daughter Margot (Ted), son Fraser (Gloria), sisters Jeanette (Don) and Joyce Elliot, her sister-in-law Jean Elliot (late Ted), as well as grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She will also be remembered as a teacher with the Lakeshore School Board in the off island schools of Vivian Graham and Edgwater. She is a graduate of MacDonald College and McGill University where she earned her Bachelor of Education Degree. As a member of Lakeside Heights Baptist Church she was active in the youth programs and a longtime member of the church choir. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to the caregivers from Nova West Island (formerly VON.) and the CLSC Lac St. Louis, who, over many years, gave compassionate care to Lois on a daily basis; Also our appreciation to Eleanor Cullen and Margaret Rose. GARCEAU, Annette (née Véronneau) - 1960-2009 - The family announces with sorrow her passing away at the Timmins and District Hospital on Tuesday January 20, 2009 at the age of 48 years. Beloved wife of Maurice Garceau. Loving mother of Dannielle Mason (Kevin), and Renée Garceau (Brian) all of Timmins. Dear grandmother of Noah Mason and was expecting her second grandchild. She is survived by her mother Doris Véronneau, her brother Daniel Véronneau (wife Pierrette) and her sister Denise Véronneau (husband Marcel). Also left to mourn are many nieces and nephews. KAJMOWICZ,Becky 2009-01-22 KAJMOWICZ Mrs. Becky Eileen Kajmowicz, age 58 years of Rita Street, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph‚s Hospice with friends by her side, on Tuesday, January 20, 2009. Born in Minneapolis, Minn. U.S.A. in 1950, Becky grew up there and received her Teaching Degree in Bemidji, Minn. She had taught for a while in Crookston, Minn. before taking a position with Prudential in their Pension Plan Department. In 1979, she married Ted in Minneapolis and together they moved to Thunder Bay. While here, Becky had worked for Investors Group for about four years before returning to teaching, substituting for both the Public and Catholic School Boards. She returned to full time teaching at Westgate High School in the math and computers departments until her retirement in 2006. Becky had a love for crafts and scrap booking so much, so she took a job at Michael‚s Craft Store. She had a passion for everything in life, especially gardening, and all the neighbourhood birds, squirrels and other critters. However, despite all her hobbies and work, Becky always made time for anyone who needed it because she truly did cherish her family and friends. Becky will be lovingly remembered by Ted, her husband of almost thirty years; son Garrett of Bellevue, Penn.; mother Helen Sforza of Spokane, Wash.; sister Ashala Faircrest of Spokane, Wash. Numerous other relatives also survive in Canada and the U.S.A. She was predeceased by her father, Arthur Jackson. Funeral Services for the late Becky Kajmowicz will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 24th, 2009 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev.
