HANZLIK, Nancy E. (née Curtis) (1934- 2008) - Beloved wife of Tom. My faithful loving wife of 51 years, my beautiful Angel, went to heaven peacefully in our loving arms on Tuesday December 23, 2008 at the age of 74 years. Her sudden passing has left us deeply saddened and grief- stricken. Nancy was born in Kapuskasing and eventually her parents settled in Cochrane. She began her career as a long distance switchboard operator for ONR telecommunications, working her way to Cobalt where she met Tom on July 4, 1954 at the Deluxe Restaurant. Tom was then employed with Hydro Electric Power Commission. He then found employment May 9, 1955, with Abitibi Power and Paper Mill in Sturgeon Falls, at which time Nancy gained employment with Bell Canada in North Bay. After receiving a transfer to the Sturgeon Falls office, Nancy and Tom were married June 11, 1957. A few years later, she retired to raise her family and begin her second career as a life long volunteer. Some of her accomplishments include Girl Guide Leader from 1966 to 1988, at which time the area was renamed the Nancy Hanzlik District, member of the Catholic Women's League from 1971 to present, Minor Hockey Association from 1974 to 1982, Youth Bowling Association from 1973 to 1978. She canvassed door to door for the Cancer Society from 1971 to present, C.N.I.B. from 1982 until 1987, and the March Of Dimes for many years, she served as a Board Member for Au Chateau Home for the Aged for 4 years. She was a member of Branch 23 Royal Canadian Legion Ladies' Auxiliary from 1959 to present where she held various positions such as President, Secretary, Treasurer, etc. She also was an Associate member of the Legion for the last 17 years. She received the All Ontario Award from Governor General Lincoln Alexander in 1988 for over 20 years of Girl Guide Service, the Ontario Trillium Award in 1989 from the Legion Ladies' Auxiliary and the Volunteer Service Award for Community Service and Involvement in 1992. Nancy was proud to serve the Community of Sturgeon Falls and area and gave unselfishly, expecting nothing in return. She took great satisfaction in helping others. Left behind to go on without her is her husband Tom, daughters Vivian Hanzlik- Davidson (late Ken), Stephanie Gordon (Dave) and son Jeff Hanzlik (Tracy). Nancy was blessed with 7 grandchildren Ellie, Jessica, Virginia, Kanessa, Cailen, Ryden, Angela (Louie) and her one great grandchild Kaysie. Survived by her sister Vivian Hopper (Wes) of Brampton and her sister in law Helena Mosna (Fanda) of Plzen, Czech Republic. Predeceased by her parents John and Ardella, brother Jack and sisters Rose and Elizabeth. A Mass to celebrate Nancy's life will be held Saturday January 17, 2009 at 11:00 am at our Lady of Sorrows Church in Sturgeon Falls. HOWE, Edward “Ted“ Kenneth - (1930- 2009) Passed away peacefully on January 12, 2009, after a brief illness, with his beloved Lillian by his side. Predeceased by his son Tim (1996). He will be sadly missed by his children Ted (Vija), Cathy (John) Martin, Carol-Anne (Barry) Burkholder, Colleen (Gino) Paolone, Christine (Mario) Prudente, Tom (Anne). Also remembered by 17 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter. Predeceased by brothers, Paul and Justin, sisters-in-law Lillian and Carmel, and remembered by brothers Bill (Rose), Gerry and sisters-in-law Mamie and Ann. Ted will also be remembered by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ted excelled in sports, especially lacrosse which he played for over 30 years. He was a member of the Canadian and Ontario Lacrosse Halls of Fame and the St. Catharines Sports Hall of Fame. He was a Past President of the St. Catharines Old Boys Lacrosse Association and a long time member of St. Denis Parish. His greatest accomplishment however, was his family. They enjoyed their many family gatherings and vacations together. He was man of quiet dignity and patience with a keen sense of humour. Ted's family will receive visitors at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines on Wednesday, January 14th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, January 15th at St. Denis Roman Catholic Church, 230 Lake Street (corner of Lake St. and Carlton St.), St. Catharines at 11 am. FARRANT, Frances (Skip) - July 28, 1922 - January 6, 2009 - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Frances (Skip) Farrant, aged 86, on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Pinewood Court, with her daughters by her side. Frances was born in Stanstead, Quebec on July 28, 1922 and joined the RCAF in 1943 (Women’s Division) stationed in Torbay, Newfoundland as a wireless operator where she met her future husband Earl Farrant from Fort William. They married in 1945 and following the war came to Fort William to raise their 4 children. Skip enjoyed the outdoors spending many happy summers camping at Pass Lake with the resident “Camp Cop”. Mom will be remembered for her quick wit, wicked sense of humour, endearing smile, infectious giggle and most importantly being our soft place to fall. She will be deeply missed and forever loved by son Rick Farrant, Kipling, Sask. (here), daughter Joanne (Vic) Bobinski, Thunder Bay, daughter Laurie (Todd) Solomon, Toronto (here), and son Scott Farrant, Thunder Bay. LERNER, Gladys Elizabeth August 17, 1924 - January 11, 2009 Gladys, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at the age of 84 years. Gladys was born in Kilmaganny, County Kilkenny, Ireland, the second eldest of twelve children and immigrated with her family to Canada as a young child. She grew up in Summerland, B.C. where she finished high school and joined the CWAC. She then went on to study nursing at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, B.C. and graduated in 1949. As a Registered Nurse, she became a stewardess stationed in Moncton, N.B., where she met her husband Bill. On April 7, 1953 they married in Summerland and later, in 1964, they moved to Calgary where they have resided ever since. Gladys was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be sadly missed by all. Gladys is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Bill; her children, Terry (Jack) Knight, Ann, Mary Terek, Thomas (Carrie), Richard (Mary Jo), Paul (Laurie), Michael (Cheryl) and Brian (Brenda). She is also survived by her grandchildren; Amorel, Lalo, Joe, Kirk and Charlotte, Ryan and Shaun, Stephan and Craig, James and Krista and Aaron, Lindsay, Marissa, Ashlynn, Mariah and Lauren; and her great-grandchildren; Jacob, Rebecca, Kallum, Aisha and Jack, as well as her sisters, Sheila (Ron) Bates, Peggy Desjardins, Patricia O'Brien, Francis Poteur, Terry Snaith and Joan Klein. THOMPSON, C. Robert (Bob) Peacefully at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa on Saturday, January 10, 2009, aged 94. Rob was born in Edmonton, Alberta to the late Charles and Edith Thompson. He loved to fly and served in WWII as a flying instructor for the RCAF. It was at the military base at Fort McLeod, Alberta, where he met and married Nurse Marjorie Elizabeth Winter in 1942. After the war, Rob obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Physics and then began his career in the Canadian Air Force in Edmonton. After retiring in 1966 at #6 Repair Depot in Trenton as a Group Captain in the RCAF, Rob moved to Ottawa to pursue an academic career at Carleton University, ending his working life there in 1982 as Associate Dean of Engineering. Rob and Marjorie then moved to Perth, Ontario, near their beloved cottage on Long Lake, before returning to Ottawa for their last years. Rob is survived by his children Robert A. (Susan), John C.A. (Joanne), Betty J. (William A. Roger), E. Maureen (Robert J. Murphy); 6 grandchildren, David Thompson, Michael Thompson, Michael Roger (Colleen), Kelly (Jeff Hayes), Leigh (Mark Crawford) and Katherine Roger; and 6 great-grandchildren. Rob is predeceased by his wife Marjorie, his brother Phil and his sisters Joyce, Margaret and Nancy. AVISON, Dr. Wm. Howard, O.D. - Peacefully on Sunday, January 11, 2009, Howard passed away in his 85th year. Beloved husband of Joan (nee Adams) for 56 wonderful years. Dearly loved father of Kathryn (Scott Walker) and adored Grandpa of his only grandchild, Kailey. Dear brother- in-law of Frances Avison, Dr. Robert Adams, Dr. Kenneth Adams (Isabel), Dr. Paul Adams (Velma). Howard is predeceased by his parents, Percy and Fidella, and his brother, Arnold. Born in Brantford, he graduated from BCI and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. in 1943. Howard graduated from the School of Optometry in 1950 and joined his father in a local Optometric practice that served the community for 75 years. Howard was honoured with a life membership in the College of Optometrists of Ontario on his retirement in 1994. He is a Fellow Emeritus of the American Academy of Optometry. Howard is a 58 year member of the Rotary Club of Brantford, and member of Farringdon Independent Church. Howard's life pleasures included playing hockey, sailing, jazz music, coaching and volunteering with the Brantford Aquatic Club, building and restoration work of century homes, sail boats and cottages. He thoroughly enjoyed travelling and teaching his young granddaughter to swim. A celebration of Howard's life will be held at the DENNIS TOLL FUNERAL HOME, 55 Charing Cross Street, Brantford, on Thursday January 15, 2009 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Service in the chapel on Friday at 11 a.m. with reception to follow. Donald was a retired set-up man from G.M. Transmission Plant and a member of CAW Local 1973. Van IDERSTINE, Brian Ira May 18, 1943 - January 9, 2009 During the early morning hours of the ninth day of January 2009, Brian Ira Van Iderstine passed peacefully from this world to the next at his acreage home in the scenic foothills outside of Cochrane, Alberta with his wife Dianne, his sweetheart, of forty-four years, by his side. Brian was born in Calgary on May 18, 1943 and passed on at the age of 65. Brian was an exceptionally affectionate "best friend" and caring husband. He shared his passion for outdoor adventure, wildlife observation and the "complexities of hi-tech" with zeal. As a Dad, Brian was strongly involved in his children's interests. He was an avid supporter at Drew's football, rugby and hockey events. A keen advocate for his daughters Tobi and Kelli and their involvement with the International Order of Jobs Daughters and assisted alongside with the Special Olympics. With his grandchildren, Brian became their quintessential fan whether it be cheering on Marshall at BMX and hockey, supporting Brooklyn at weekly soccer practices and games, sitting front row and center at Kaisha's special drama presentations or reading bedtime stories to our little Wyatt. During a career, which spanned thirty plus years, Brian worked with Environment Canada (Hydrometric Surveying Department) in the capacity of Supervisor of Water Monitoring and Policy Regulations for nineteen years. As evidence of the high regard that the USA/Canadian Departments had for Brian's endeavors, he was presented with numerous awards and commendations. Over the past ten years while in retirement, Brian accepted the position of President of his rural community, Bill Hill Creek Estates. He served for a six-year term and then agreed to coordinate the community's Well Project. He will be sorely missed. Brian's family is devastated by their sudden loss and will miss him more than words could express. He leaves behind his devoted companion, wife Diane. His deeply caring children, son Drew (Danna), daughters Tobi (Heather) and Kelli (Joe). The four "apples of his eye" granddaughters, Brooklyn and Kaisha and grandsons, Marshall and Wyatt. MITCHELL, Andrew (Andy) November 14, 1920 - January 10, 2009 Andrew (Andy) Mitchell of Calgary passed away at the Chinook Hospice in the early morning hours of Saturday, January 10, 2009, in his 89th year. Andy was the dearly loved father of Barbara and her husband Grant McNeil; and the proud Granddad of Scott and Evan McNeil. He was predeceased by his wife Elsie and by his brothers Robert and George Mitchell and his sister Mrs. Margaret Ogilvy. The son of George and Agnes (Alexander) Mitchell, Andy was born in a small coal mining village in Fife, Scotland. In 1926, when Andy was five, the family immigrated to Canada, where they lived for a few years in Montreal before eventually settling in Toronto. During World War II, Andy enlisted in the Army where he served as a gunner with the Royal Canadian Artillery. His regiment took part in the Italian Campaign 1943 to 1945 as well as the liberation of Holland at war's end. After his discharge from the Army, Andy returned to Toronto where he began a career in the flooring business and resumed his friendship with a red-headed gal named Elsie, whom he had met while working at a Muskoka resort prior to the war; they were married in 1949. While the marriage ultimately ended in separation, the two always remained close friends until Elsie's passing in 2006. After retirement, Andy lived for short periods in Winnipeg and Victoria before moving to Calgary in 1990 to be close to Barb and her family. His years spent in Calgary were some of Andy's happiest as he treasured the opportunity to be a part of his young grandsons' lives as they grew up. He loved to recall the many wonderful times spent with "his boys" when they were little, be it hammering and sawing in the workshop, watching Blue Jays baseball on television, or simply making up silly games and telling tall tales. Andy was a stubbornly independent sort whose pleasures in life were simple. He enjoyed a good game of golf, a steaming bowl of oatmeal porridge, a wee dram of Scotch now and then, and will always be remembered for his sly sense of humour and the mischievous twinkle in his eye. At Andy's request Funeral Services will not be held. LANGFORD, Helen Madonna (nee Normore) - Passed away suddenly at Brantford General Hospital on Friday January 9, 2009 at the age of 58. Beloved spouse of Gerry Tattrie. Devoted mother of Scott King (Shelley) of Branchton, Lori Lilly (Hunter) of Ayr, and Philip Jason Langford of Brantford. Loving grandmother of Jessica, Ryan, Philip, Jordan, Jacob and Eric. Helen was the youngest in a family of 13, and will be dearly missed by her siblings, Floss, Lynn, Kay, Ann, Don, Dick, Kevin and especially by her best friend and sister Marie, also by her many nieces, nephews and Matthew. Predeceased by her parents Bernard and Francis Normore and three brothers and one sister. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service at The Knights of Columbus Hall, 333 Speedsville Rd. Cambridge on Wednesday January 14 at 3 pm with a committal service taking place at 4 pm. Legion Service will be held at the South Brant Legion Branch 463 on Sunday January 18, from 2-5 pm. GOODCHILD, Marion Louise - Entered into rest at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, Ontario on Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 at the wonderfull age of 95. Predeceased by her husband Ross and brother Dr. Walter G. Anderson. Survived by her daughter Ann L. Smith and son J. Randall Goodchild and her five grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Her many relatives and friends across Canada and the United States will miss her great zest for life. We will all miss her company, her humour and most of all her love for always keeping herself busy with various projects. Thank you to all for the prayers during her difficult times lately.
