NEUMUELLER, SIEGFRIED 2009-01-13 We are very sad and heart broken to lose Sigi on January 4, 2009 after a long struggle with his heart. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and our best friend. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elsie Peters; daughter Paulanne (Dale), son Joe (Suzanne); sister-in-law Anne Elchuk; grandchildren Christopher, Kurtis, Amy, Brenda and Megan; brother Ernest in Austria; two sisters Margaret and Ernestine and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brother Joe of Florida (January 6, 2007). Sigi‘s wishes were to be cremated and a private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Mr. Goeffery George Wallace Ellwood September 15, 1921 - January 5, 2009 ELLWOOD, Geoffery George Wallace 87, Dartmouth, passed away in Dartmouth General Hospital on January 5, 2009. Born in London, Ont., he was the eldest son of the late William Oliver and Hilda Grace (Sturgess) Ellwood. He was a career soldier serving 38 and a half years in the Royal Canadian Corps of signals. Captured at Dieppe, he was a prisoner of war for 995 days, during which his hands were tied/shackled for over a year. He was released after a 30 day forced march including only three meals for the prisoners. Returning home, he was stationed in the Canadian north on the N.W.T. and Yukon, radio system. He also served in the Korean Conflict and on the first contingent of peace keepers to the Belgian Congo. Geoff was past-president of the Atlantic Chapter POW Association, a life member of the Centennial Legion, Branch No. 160, a charter member of the Dartmouth Lawn Bowls, a longtime treasurer for Woodlawn United Church Sunday school, nine years as the Akela of the first Woodlawn Cubs and he curled for many years at CFB Halifax Curling Club. In 1976, he was honoured when he received the Military Medal of Merit. He is survived by his wife, Helen (Leppanen); children, Martha Gordon, London, Ont., James (Mary) Borden, Ont.; Keith (Holly), Elderbank; pap to Sara, Kathleen, Neil, David, James, Alex. Also survived by sisters, Olive Murphy, Burlington, Ont.; Veda (Glenn) Campbell, North Carolina; brother, Oliver, Hamilton, Ont. and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Wallace and son-in-law, David Gordon. Visitation will be held Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. A legion service will be held beginning at 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Woodlawn United Church, Dartmouth. Reception will follow in the church. Mr. Patrick 'Pat' Walter Sapieha April 13, 1915 - January 7, 2009 Patrick Sapieha April 13, 1915 – January 7, 2009 Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Patrick (Peter) Sapieha passed away peacefully in his sleep with his family by his side Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at St. Paul’s Hospital. Patrick was born in Krydor, Saskatchewan on April 13, 1915 to parents Michael and Anna Sapieha. Patrick was the eldest son. Patrick met his loving wife Patricia (Baranieski) while living in Toronto and they were married in 1945. They returned to Saskatchewan in 1953 with two daughters and completed their family with three sons. Pat was a selfless, gentle, caring man who loved to help people and was actively involved with the community and his church. Pat was very proud to be one of the founding members of Our Lady of Czestochowa Polish Church. An avid sports enthusiast, Pat always found time to coach his sons in hockey and fastball, receiving a Coach of the Year Award in 1974. In 1982, Pat was honoured by the City of Saskatoon and Multi-Cultural Community with the Good Citizen Award for Outstanding Service in the Community. In retirement, Pat loved nothing more than to have his family surround him, working in his garden and staying connected with his community involvements. We will forever cherish our time with Pat; each smile, words of encouragement, the many acts of kindness and his readiness for a lively discussion - Pat was always right. Pat will be forever remembered by his wife of 63 years, Patricia; his daughters, Barbara (John) Kronebusch, Carolyn (Richard) Pilipiak; sons, Kenneth (Debbie), Richard (Michele), and Randy (Carol); grandchildren, Morgan, Shannon, Steven, Nicholas and Jarret; sister, Helen Cymbalisty; and brother, Leonard; along with many relatives and friends. SMILEY, Adel "Eddy" Ibrahim November 28, 1933 - January 12, 2009 On Monday, January 12, 2009, God called one of his angels home. He was surrounded in hospital by his loving family, and after a short struggle with heart failure, he peacefully left us to take his place in heaven. He leaves to mourn his wife Afaf (nee Tayar) of 46 years. Cherished and much loved father of Raymond (Julie Welsh), Raymonda (Robert Dirani), Amal (Gary Eden) and Darlene (Michael DiNardo). He will be greatly missed by his many grandchildren, Alexandra, Christopher, Emilie, Nicholas, Gabriella and Isabella. BROWN, Robert Clive 1917 - 2009 R. Clive Brown passed away suddenly on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at the age of 91. Clive was born and raised in Alberta and graduated from the University of Alberta in 1942 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was predeceased by his wife, Alma, in 1993. Clive will be be sadly missed by his son Jim (Janice); his daughter Bev Wilkes (Pat); four grandchildren, Rodney, Heather, Andrea and Jennifer; as well as numerous relatives and friends. Clive will always be remembered for his compassion, generosity and encouragement to all who knew him. We have lost more than a father and grandfather, we have lost a friend. DOWNHAM, Robert Harold After a courageous battle with cancer that began in August of 2008, Robert Harold Downham, in his 44th of Claresholm, AB formerly of Woodstock, ON, finally met his Lord and Saviour on January 10, 2009 at 10:48 a.m. Rob is sadly missed by his loving mother Helen Downham (Brian), Brantford, ON; his sister Jennifer Downham-Bain, nieces and nephew, Miranda, Britney and Taylor, Haliburton, ON; sister and brother, Allison and Ben Spychaj, Sharon and Ard and families, Brantford, ON; Al, Karen and families, Cranbrook, BC; cousins: Mike (Joanne), Debbie (Gary), Steve (Mary), Alberta; his loving wife Brenda, his cherished son Barrett and daughters Santanna (Josh) and Odessa and many more relatives and friends. FISKE, Janet Margaret (nee Morrison) August 31, 1923 - January 9, 2009 Janet Margaret Fiske, passed away on Friday, January 9, 2009 at the age of 85 years. Our mom was a happy vivacious person who loved life. In her early years she was a Teacher, teaching in one-room school houses with her sister Mary. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and children as they moved back and forth across Canada during his years as a RCAF Pilot. She was a lady who liked to spend time visiting family especially her grandchildren. Retiring in Red Deer, she was pleased to have her family close by, and spent her twilight years at Bethany Care in Harvest Hills Calgary. Janet is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Marjory and Wayne Silver of Victoria, Cathy and Barry Bleay of Calgary; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Christine Fiske of Gibbons; eight grandchildren, Christa and her husband Ned Easton, Michael Silver, Sabrina Bleay, David Bleay, Claire Bleay, Stuart Bleay, Keir Fiske and his wife Charlotte, and Derek Fiske; five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister Mary (Bunty) Morrison of Red Deer; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Betty Morrison of Calgary as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Janet was predeceased by her husband Alfred of Red Deer. RUTHERFORD, Susan (nee James) May 7, 1914 - January 9, 2009 Our beloved mother and grandmother, Susan (Sue) Rutherford of Calgary, left the world peacefully with family by her side on Friday, January 9, 2009 at the age of 94 years. She has gone to join Tom, her beloved husband, of sixty-three years; her parents, sisters and brothers, Howley, Lew, Nancy, Lala, Jack, and Maureen. Sue will be missed by her children, Anne and Richard Johnson, Maureen and Bob Haney, and Tom and Donna Rutherford; grandchildren, Susanne (Allan) Goosney, Michael Johnson, Erin (Lonnie) Hansen, Jim (Cathy) Haney, Keith Haney, Thomas, Steven, and Nancy Rutherford; great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Allison, Joseph Goosney, and Joshua Haney; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews. Sue's parents, Martha and John James, migrated from Ireland with her five older siblings, to seek a new life in Canada. Born in Winnipeg, Sue moved to Calgary, and attended Connaught, Sunalta, and Western Canada High Schools. She trained as a teacher during the Depression and felt fortunate to be employed in a number of one-room schools around rural Alberta, teaching up to nine grades simultaneously. She met Tom Rutherford at Scarboro United Church, where they were both founding members, and they were married in 1940. Sue and Tom lived in their home on Richmond Road, for fifty-two years until they moved, in 2003, to the Manors at Garrison Woods. Her family was Sue's priority; she was a dedicated wife, a supportive mother, and caring sister and aunt. She was very active in Scarboro Church, especially in Young Peoples, Elda Daniels (U.C.W.), and Couples Club. She spent many hours visiting with shut-in seniors and volunteered for many years with Meals-On-Wheels. She was a talented artist and gardener and loved to entertain friends and family. An exceptional grandmother, Sue loved every moment spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sue was an avid reader, and as her eyesight failed she was grateful for her library books-on-tape. The family would like to thank the residents and staff of the Manors at Garrison Woods, and her caregivers at the Chinook Hospice and Bethany Care Center, for their friendship, care and support. RYBKIN, Vladymir (Walter) - Unexpectedly, at St. Joseph's Centre, on January 10, 2009. He leaves behind to mourn him Maria, his wife of 62 years, and daughter Tamara (of Ottawa). A long and arduous journey from a Siberian concentration camp led first to Germany, where he met and married Maria, and then to Canada, to freedom and the opportunity for the two of them to build a new and better life for themselves. Walter enjoyed a long life but his later years were beset with numerous ailments. However, with the unfailing and dedicated care and support of his wife, he was able to enjoy life at home until his last days. In true Cossak fashion, he fought death to the very end. KINNEY, James Barry - In loving memory of James Barry Kinney, 61 years, of Sudbury, who passed away Sunday, January 11th, 2009 at the SRH - Memorial Site. James was born in Chapleau and married Anna (Curich) in 1996 in Sudbury. Jim's love for cars fulfilled his life from the age of 12 when he got his first car. He became an expert mechanic from buying and repairing cars and trucks. He worked as a tandem and transport truck driver, and also owned his own trucking company. He was always willing to do repairs for family and friends. Jim wouldn't hesitate to stop when he seen someone broken down on the side of the road. When he wasn't under a hood, you could always find him at his favorite Tim Horton's. He will be remembered for his willingness to help people out. Jim will be sadly missed, but never forgotten by his family and friends. Beloved husband of Anna (Curich) Kinney. Devoted and caring mother of Don (Yvonne) Caverley from Victoria, BC and twin daughters - Janet Caverley from Toronto and Joan (Ian) Hay from Oakville. Loving grandmother of Dr. Natasha Caverley, Sara and Stephen Hay. Dearest sister of Margaret Grand of Welland. Predeceased by her parents, Mary Catharine and Cornelius Ryan; also predeceased by siblings - Tom, Jack, Patrick, Beatrice and Fidelis. Mary was a registered nurse and graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Sudbury, Ontario. GALLANT, Alderice - 1918-2009 À l'Hôpital de Moncton, le mardi 13 janvier 2009, à l'âge de 90 ans, est décédé Alderice Gallant, domicilié à Moncton. Né le 20 août 1908 à Ottawa, il était le fils de feu Romuald et Élodie (Gallant) Gallant. Il laisse dans le deuil six enfants: Gloria Vienneau (Jean-Paul) de Toronto, Raymond (feu Bernadette) d'Alberta, Paulette Rodgers (William) de Fredericton, Linda Hart (Dave) de Riverview, Francine Cleveland de Montréal, et Jean-Paul (Anne) de Moncton; neuf petits-enfants, un arrière-petits-enfant; trois soeurs: Évangeline Gallant, Jeanne McNeil, Simonne Gallant; ainsi que son amie de coeur, Anita Gagnon. Il est précédé dans la tombe par son épouse, Dorothée Melanson en 2003; deux frères: Émile et Hervé; une soeur, Rita et un enfant, Charles. Retiré du CN, Alderice était membre des Chevaliers de Colombs, l'Association des Pensionnaires du CN, la Legion Royale du Canada, le 'Air Force Club' et ancien membre avec l' INCA. Aussi, il était un ancien combattant de la seconde guerre mondial ayant servi avec l'aviation. La dépouille mortelle est exposée au salon funéraire Frenette, 88,rue Church à Moncton (858-1900). Les funérailles auront lieu en l'église N-D-de-la-Paix, avenue Murphy , Moncton, le vendredi 16 janvier à 10h30. L'inhumation se fera dans le cimerière N-D-du-Calvaire à Dieppe. GAMACHE, Jean-Paul 1921 - 2009 En sa résidence de Montréal, dans la nuit du 11 janvier 2009, entouré de l'amour et des prières de son épouse bien-aimée, s'est éteint paisiblement Jean-Paul Gamache, autrefois membre de la Congrégation des Écoles Chrétiennes. Détenteur d'un Brevet supérieur d'enseignement, d'une Maîtrise en enseignement de l'anglais et d'une Maîtrise en administration de la "New York University”, il oeuvra au Québec et fut ensuite cofondateur, directeur et enseignant au Collège De LaSalle de Douala, au Cameroun, pendant une vingtaine d'années, et au Collège Charles-Lemoyne sur la Rive-Sud de Montréal. Cette institution souligna sa remarquable carrière de quarante années auprès des jeunes du monde par un vibrant hommage, lors de son départ à la retraite. Il continua son oeuvre d'éducateur comme associé au Bureau de consultation en thérapie familiale de son épouse, au niveau de l'administration et de l'accueil. Fierté de sa famille et de sa belle-famille comme fils, frère, beau-frère, cousin, oncle et grand-oncle, il en devint le modèle et le rassembleur. Il laisse dans le deuil ses frères Fernand (Thérèse Robert) et Roland-Marcel (Pauline Laliberté), sa soeur Gisèle (feu Claude Charbonneau), sa belle-soeur Monique Voyer (feu Raynald Gamache), de nombreux cousins et cousines, neveux et nièces et arrière neveux et nièces des familles Gamache et Laurin. Il cultiva également une grande fidélité envers les personnes croisées sur son long parcours. Plusieurs sont devenus des amis. Sa porte était toujours ouverte pour les recevoir et les encourager. Il aurait célébré en juin 2009 la vingt-cinquième année de son mariage avec Laurette Laurin. Ce fut un époux tendre, généreux, patient, attentionné et toujours ouvert au renouveau. Il lui lègue, ainsi qu'à tous ceux qui l'ont connu, sa foi en Dieu et son amour de la vie. La dépouille mortelle sera exposée le mercredi 14 janvier de 19 h à 22 h, le jeudi 15 janvier de 14 h à 17 h et de 19 h 22 h et le vendredi 16 janvier à partir de 9 h au Les funérailles auront lieu le vendredi 16 janvier 2009, à 11 h, en l'église Saint-Édouard sise rue Saint-Denis angle Beaubien. Mr. Allan Murray Frey April 6, 1934 - January 5, 2009 FREY, Allan passed away with his family at his side on Monday, January 5, 2009 at the age of 74 years. He was predeceased by his parents Oscar and Cathy; and sister Dolores Frey. Allan will be lovingly remembered by his wife Liane; daughters Debi (Ken) Zacharias, Marie Frey, Susan (Rob) Bretescher and Jan (Larry) Raiwet; Stepson Charles (Gloria) Starks; and stepdaughter Karen (Bill) Stoddart; 13 grandchildren; two brothers Irwin and Fred (Marlene); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Allan was a respected framing contractor in Regina for over 40 years. He was a gifted carpenter, loved gardening, bowling, camping and traveling. He enjoyed his family and was a friend to all. A special thank you to the Hemo Dialysis Unit and the Coronary Care Unit at the Regina General Hospital. As well, the family would like to thank all Al and Liane’s neighbors who have been very supportive during Al’s illness. John Wellington Lowe, of Kincardine, at Wingham and District Hospital, on Saturday, January 10, 2009, in his 67th year.
