GIRARD, Bettie (Mary) C'est avec grande tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de Bettie, notre chère mère, ce 9 janvier 2009. L' ont précédée son époux, Claude Girard ainsi que sa soeur, Dorothy McIlhone. Elle laisse dans le deuil sa fille Diane (Terry Ladd) et son fils "Butch” Claude Michael (Becky Miller). Elle laisse également dans le deuil ses petits-enfants Christopher Ladd, Kate et Michelle Girard ainsi que de nombreux neveux et nièces. LONG, Frank John - Passed away suddenly at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Sunday January 11, 2009 at the age of 85. Beloved husband of 54 years to Joyce (Douglas) Long. Dearly loved father of Chris (Pat) Long and Doug (Wendy) Long of Niagara Falls, Randy Long of Australia and the late Peggy Hanshar (1988). Cherished grandfather of Tom (Trudy) Long, Jackie Long, Tracy (Trevor) Glasser, Ted Long, Jennifer (Francis Desjardins) Hanshar, Frank Hanshar, Owen Long, Devon Long and Veronique Long and great-grandfather of Damian Long, Christina Long and Kennedy Glasser. Dear brother of Mary Fiore, Sam (Frances) Long, Angelo (Marguerite) Long, and Rosemarie (Bill) Yule. Dear brother-in-law of Rose Long and Jean (Gerald) Harris. Predeceased by his brothers Nick Long and Peter Long and his wife Anne and his sister Anna Long. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews. Mr. Long was born and raised in Niagara Falls and had been a teacher for 30 years and taught at N.F.C.V.I. and in Fort Erie. For several years he was also a technical director and a consultant with the Niagara South Board of Education, retiring in 1985. Among his many accomplishments, he authored four text books which were the first such texts used in high schools throughout Ontario. He was also an avid sportsman having played professional hockey and coached hockey and baseball for many years. He was recently honoured to receive the distinction of being named to the Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame and he also authored two books “A Century of Sports in Niagara Falls” which chronicles the achievements of local athletes and teams in Niagara Falls. He will be fondly remembered by the many friends he made throughout his lifetime. Flora Theresa Brophy August 8, 1953 - January 5, 2009 Flora Theresa Brophy, beloved wife of Gerald Brophy, passed away peacefully at home in Calgary on January 5th, 2009, at the age of 55 years. In addition to her loving husband, Flora is also survived by her children, Vincent and Jill; grandchildren, Brady and Alisha; siblings, Russell, Ray, Emlene, Michael, Elaine, Francis, and Harold Murphy. Born and raised in Dunville, Newfoundland, Flora later attended universities Memorial University of Newfoundland, and the University of Lethbridge, Alberta. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Memorial in Social Work. Flora’s career spanned 30 fruitful years working for the Federal Government in a variety of roles in Lethbridge, Edmonton, and Calgary, including: refugee assistance and immigration recruitment, employment assistance and counseling, job creation, and social program development for the homeless. She would spend the majority of her time as a Labour Market Information Officer with the Employer Services Unit in Lethbridge, all of whom she dearly missed. In her personal life Flora loved to sing and had the most beautiful voice; she enjoyed gardening, the sun, and was often found smiling outside; a tireless study, she was constantly improving on herself and even became fluent in French. Flora’s life was altruistically devoted to helping people and she did so with all the love and grace of an angel. Her love for and devotion to her family is magnificent and inspiring. She will be deeply missed by her many friends and loving family. SEAMAN, Daryl Kenneth (Doc) April 28, 1922 - January 11, 2009 Doc Seaman passed away Sunday, January 11, 2009 at the age of 86 years, after a long battle with prostate cancer, a challenge that typically inspired him to donate his time, effort and financial support in order to help others with the disease. Doc was born in Rouleau, Saskatchewan. He became one of Alberta's most successful oilmen and industrialists through his company, Bow Valley Industries, and many other ventures. He and his brothers, B.J. and Don Seaman, were among the first wave of adventurous oilmen who pioneered the industry after the Second World War. Doc's war record was itself remarkable; he flew eighty-two successful combat missions out of North Africa as a sub-hunting pilot and was awarded the Government of France citation for bravery. Doc was an original Calgary Flames owner who followed the team passionately to the end. Besides bringing the Flames to Calgary, he was a key player in building the Saddledome and the acquisition for Calgary of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games. Doc was also one of a small group of visionaries who created programs that saved Canadian hockey from mediocrity at a time when the European game was becoming dominant. Canada's five junior hockey gold medal wins in a row have their roots in Project 75, now called the Seaman-Hotchkiss Hockey Foundation. Until recently, Doc could be seen lacing on his skates for a powerful turn around Olympic Plaza. Doc was perhaps proudest of creating jobs for thousands of Canadians; the pain of unemployment haunted him from the time he saw the miserable parade of jobless men riding the rails across prairies during the Great Depression. Most recently, Doc was involved in a job creation program with aboriginal partnerships through Western Lakota Drilling. His business goal was to create jobs; money was merely a fortunate by-product, especially for the beneficiaries of his many philanthropic causes. Doc gave generously to the Seaman-Hotchkiss Foundation, the Seaman Family MR Research Centre, the Calgary Prostate Cancer Institute, Hockey Canada, the University of Calgary's NeuroArm project, Seaman Stadium - Okotoks, Scott Seaman Sports Rinks, SALTS, Ducks Unlimited, University of Saskatchewan, Nature Conservancy of Canada and a host of other social and cultural causes too numerous to list. His love of the outdoors and ranching inspired Doc to purchase the OH Ranch in 1987. It became Doc's desire to preserve the OH legacy for future generations. Through a partnership with the Alberta government and private conservation groups, it was agreed to preserve a total of twenty-one square kilometers through a heritage rangeland designation and conservation easements for one of Alberta's oldest and largest ranches. Doc's many honours include: Officer of the Order of Canada; member of the Alberta Order of Excellence; and was inducted into the Calgary Business Hall of Fame. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from both the University of Calgary and the University of Saskatchewan, where Doc earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. In later life, Doc's motto became "never retire". He urged everyone to stay active and devote their time to helping others. This was expressed by Doc in his recent biography "Staying in the Game". Former Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed wrote of him: "For decades he has also worked outside the business sphere, using his remarkable talents to better his community and his country. Yet he has done this so quietly that his name is relatively unknown to the general public." Doc would be uncomfortable with the length of this obituary. He never looked for praise, preferring to act rather than talk. We felt it important to share some of his accomplishments with the hope of celebrating his life and encouraging others to carry on his legacy of community service. Special thanks to the Foothills ICU Medical Team, especially the excellent daily care from all the nurses and doctors. Doc was predeceased by his wife Lois, his sister Dorothy Hamilton, his father Byron Luther, his mother, Letha Mae (Mae), his sister-in-law and wife of B.J., Evelyn, and his beloved grandson, Scott Seaman. Doc leaves to mourn, his fiancee, Monique Viau, daughter Diane Lefroy; and his sons, Bob Seaman and his fiancee Patricia Calvert, Gary and Val Seaman, and Ken and Roberta Seaman; as well as his daughter-in-law Shannon Seaman. He also leaves his grandchildren, Kelly and fiance Jared Hockley, Oliver, Jarrod, Jessica, Kenneth, Cory and wife Nancy, Jeffrey as well as great-grandchild Isiah. Doc will also be greatly missed by his brothers Byron James (B.J.) and family, Donald, wife Eleanor and family. BRIDGES, Michael Jason - February 8, 1983 – January 7, 2009 Mike was taken from us suddenly and tragically on Wednesday, January 7th in Port Colborne at the tender age of 25. He will be forever remembered and loved by the love of his life Stef Ptolemy, his mother Maggie and his father the late Eric Bridges (predeceased in 2000), brother to Steve (Carey) and Kristen (Tony). Special Uncle to Andrew, Clara, Brady, Eric and Emma. Loved like another son by Ken and Jodie Ptolemy and special friend to Ed Bohonos. Mike will be fondly remembered and missed by many friends and co-workers and his cherished cat Tibby and dog Sasha. Mike was an employee for G4S Group 4 Securicor for 2 years, a graduate of Lakebreeze Elementary, Dalewood Elementary and Governor Simcoe Secondary School. He also received a diploma in Police Foundations from Trios College in Hamilton and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Mike was a family man and a good friend. He loved to help others and was always someone to call on. He always had projects on the go and loved to fix and build things most recently in his new home with Stef. He was loved by everyone he met and would always make you laugh. He touched you with his kindness, generosity and big heart and he will live on forever in our hearts. KRANJC, Zorka 2009-01-12 It is with immense sorrow the family announces the passing of their beloved mother and grandmother Zorka Kranjc, 80 years, of Beardmore, Ontario on Friday, January 9, 2009 in St. Joseph‘s Care Group Hospice, Thunder Bay, Ontario, after a lengthy illness. Zorka was born September 15, 1928 in Srednje, Slovenia (formerly Yugoslavia). In 1951 she immigrated to Canada arriving in Halifax harbour and then making her way by train to Vancouver, British Columbia where she lived and worked for a short while. In 1952 she came to Beardmore and married Jozef and they began their life together. Zorka worked for Domtar Ltd. Camp 51 and the Delmar Restaurant. Zorka‘s passion was her family and her home. She was an avid gardener and took great pride in her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. Zorka loved the outdoors and enjoyed many years camping and fishing with her husband Joe and son Gary. When her grandchildren were born they became her main focus. She was very much a part of their lives and shared with them her beliefs and traditions. Predeceased by her husband of 51 years Jozef Kranjc (2003), by sisters – Maria, Franciska, Loiska, Olga and brother John; Zorka is survived by her son Gary (& Heather) Kranjc of Beardmore, Ontario, by granddaughters Jillian at home and Savannah of Thunder Bay, brother Ludvig and sister Milka both of Slovenia. Many nephews, nieces, and cousins in Slovenia, Australia and Canada also survive. Funeral services for Zorka Kranjc, in the care of Elliott Funeral Home Ltd., Nipigon will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 1 P.M. at St. Theresa‘s Roman Catholic Church in Beardmore with Father M. Beloved son of Margaret (Nee Campbell) and the late Douglas Nicholas. Special friend and companion to Joan Winkworth (Nee Graham). Dearly loved brother of George of Braeside, Ray (Cathy), Gary (Karen), Hazel Martin (Gerald), Isabel Proulx (Edward) and Mina Schultz (Ronald), all of Arnprior. Predeceased by his wife, Joan (Nee Still) and step-son, Glenn L'Abbe. Step-father of Robert L'Abbe, Lisa Ferguson and Tina MacLaren (Robert). Step-grandfather of 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Special friend to Joan Winkworth's children, Kristyne Hogan (David) and Bryan Winkworth (Katie) as well as her 3 grandchildren. Will be missed by his many nieces and nephews. Friends may join us for visitation at the Pilon Family Funeral Home & Chapel, 50 John Street North, Arnprior on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and after 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. A Service to celebrate Bill's life will be conducted in the Pilon Family Chapel on Wednesday afternoon at 12:30. Rev. Dr. Leo Hughes officiating. Interment Malloch Road Cemetery. In memory of Bill, a donation made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 174, Arnprior would be appreciated by his family.
