WEST, John Robert. 1925 - 2009. Passed peacefully at his residence on January 10, 2009. He was the devoted husband of the late Evelyn Joyce (Irvine), the loving father of his children Wendy, John Warren and his wife Robin, and grandfather to the beautiful Evelyn, Lauren, Rachel. He leaves behind his beloved sister Joan (Ambrose), and special nephews and cousins. "Jack", a long-time resident of St. Lambert, was an avid sportsman and an enthusiastic member of the St. Lambert Curling Club for many years. He was also a dedicated and loyal employee of Pratt and Whitney - Longueuil for over thirty years. Special thanks to the staff of Les Jardins Interieurs, especially the 3rd floor, for all their kindness and support. GERLITZ, Brian William October 25, 1960 - January 8, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian Gerlitz on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at the age of 48 years. Brian was born in Calgary and lived his entire life in the community of Greenview close to his family. He was an avid hockey fan and enjoyed sports of all kinds. Those that knew Brian knew he had a kind heart and he will be missed dearly. Brian was the beloved brother and friend of Dave (Shelley); and uncle to Michelle and Andrew. He is also survived by Uncle Willie and several cousins. Brian very recently lost his father and friend Ken, as well as his close friend Uncle Bob. CALDWELL, Bruce Walter (Boomer) 2009-01-13 It is with great sadness, the family of Bruce Walter Caldwell (Boomer) announces his sudden passing peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at age 57. The oldest son of Walter (Bud) and Margaret Caldwell; Bruce was a loving and protective son, brother, uncle, and friend who‘d give you the shirt off his back if you needed it, and stand in harms way to protect you. Bruce was educated in local schools, worked in local paper mills, and laborers union. Bruce was an avid swimmer and skier in his younger years and he had a lifelong love of music and racing. Bruce‘s main love was his family and numerous friends. He found great joy with his nieces and nephews, often taking his nephews along to the races, as he had done earlier with his younger brothers. Bruce‘s love of music as a teenager had him helping out of town bands and local groups set-up and tear-down their equipment, swimming at the YMCA, rockin‘ at the YMCA & FW Gardens dances, downhill skiing at local hills, riding his Harley Davidson to Sturgis with friends from the Twin Cities, avidly attending races locally and in the USA. He was predeceased by his mother Margaret, father Walter (Bud), sister Maureen, aunts and uncles. He is survived by and will be missed by his beloved dog Blue, sisters Barbara Lomenda (Bryan) of Oakville, ON, Cathy Agombar (Howard), Janet Sandberg (Rick), Louise Sgambelluri (Donald), brothers Jeff, David (Michelle) of Niagara Falls, ON, aunt Eileen Hutton of Regina, SK, nieces Nancy Grenier (Rob, Bradley, Breanna), Melissa Sandberg (Mike), Tricia Freadrich (Leeam, Jacey Leigh), Jennifer Sgambelluri (Brett), Kimberley Johnston (Steve), Jeremy Sgambelluri (Tammy, Kayla), Michael Caldwell, Maggie Caldwell, Aaron Caldwell and Cale Caldwell. Mr. Donald Alfred Wraith May 25, 1921 - January 8, 2009 Donald Alfred Wraith 1921 – 2009 Beloved husband of Teddy, passed away at Parkridge Centre on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at the age of 87 years.Don is lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Teddy; daughter, Donna Darbellay (Doug) and their children, Marc (Maeve), Glory, Danielle Ross (Paul), Adam (Celeste), Mary Newton (Brendan), Paul, Catherine and Joseph; daughter, Linda Bell (David) and their children, Melissa Ryan (Winston), Braven Ryan (Anna), Byrun Ryan (Donna), Brunni Ryan; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; and his brother Ted (Joan). He was predeceased by his parents and 3 brothers. Don was born May 25, 1921 in Script, SK. He went to school in Wadena. Don volunteered just out of high school, and became an original member of the First Special Service Force. He served in the “Devil’s Brigade” until the force’s last parade in France. Don was awarded numerous medals, including the Bronze Star, for his meritorious service. After the war he attended the University of Toronto, where he met and married Teddy Cullen. On completion of his education Don took employment with the Hudson’s Bay Company in Saskatoon for 36 years. His greatest joy was his children and their children. He loved them and they loved him greatly in return. Don’s three passions were fishing, hunting and golf. He loved caring for animals, birds, and his yard. A celebration of Don’s life will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2009 at 10:00 am from the Park Funeral Chapel, 311 Third Avenue North. FOSTER, Russell “Bruce“ - 89 years, It is with sadness that we announce the death of Russell “Bruce“ Foster on Saturday, January 10, 2009. Predeceased by his beloved wife Mary (1994), his dear son John (1969), his brothers Wallace (1947) and Gordon (1995), and his parents Frank (1937) and Rose (1925). Bruce was born in 1919 in Orillia, Ontario. He proudly served his country during World War II and Korea, retiring from the army in 1966. He settled in Toronto with his family and began a second career with General Motors Acceptance Corp. After Mary died, he moved to Essex to be close to his son Russell and his family. In Essex he joined the Essex Retiree's Club where he took pleasure helping wherever he could. He greatly appreciated the kindness and support of Betty Lou Frith. During the summers he loved spending time at the family cottage near Port Severn. Although quiet and unassuming, Bruce will be remembered for his gracious and charming manner. He will be greatly missed by his son Russell and his wife Margaret, as well as his grandchildren David and his wife Paula, and Jonathan. To his grandchildren he was always “Golden Gramps“. He delighted in the lives and the loving natures of his great-granddaughters Mary and Claire. Bruce is also survived by his sister- in-law, Catherine Torbiak and a large extended family of nieces and nephews across Canada, for whom he had great affection (J.R.W.) His family would like to thank doctors Bricker, Hasnain, Tarabain, Hellyer, Guerra, and Horen for their care and attention during Bruce's last years and weeks. HARDIE, Robert (Bob) Edward Robert (Bob) Edward Hardie died December 20, 2008 at the Palliser Regional Care Centre in Swift Current, SK. He was born February 12, 1935 in Pouce Coupe, BC. He grew up and attended school in Northern Alberta, primarily Fairview, Alberta. He worked most of his life in the oil patch for various companies and as owner/operator of his own company (Alpha Mud) until his stroke in 2001. In the mid-nineties, he was co-partner in a rare book auction business in San Francisco. He was a successful businessman and accomplished most everything he set his effort towards. When he dedicated himself to a goal, it was not always accomplished, but forever impacted by his vision. He also trained as an addictions counsellor at Hazelden in Minnesota and worked with Kelly-Luttmer (Calgary) and for the Swift Current health region in that capacity. Throughout his life he was passionate about all sports and loved playing Gin Rummy. He also loved books and was an avid reader. He had many interests in life but one of his greatest passions for the past twenty-eight years of his life was his involvement in Alcoholics Anonymous where he committed time and energy to supporting many others in their recovery with alcohol addiction, and by sharing his experience, strength, and hope. He was committed to his own spiritual growth and was so grateful every day to God for his sobriety and release from the bondage to alcohol and self. Bob gave God credit for his life, his work, his accomplishments and his personal transformation through the AA program. He could not stress often enough the power of prayer in one's life. Throughout his life and through AA he made many life-long friends and seemed to know people wherever he went. People were drawn to Bob - he was a friendly, genuine, intelligent, selfless and humble man with a wonderful sense of humour and a gentle and generous spirit. He met his soulmate, Maureen, at a retreat in 1999, and they were married in June 2000 in Swift Current where they resided. It was also in 2000 that he made a public declaration of his faith and trust in Jesus Christ and was baptized. In 2002 and 2003, he fulfilled a desire of his to learn more about his God and how to live His Word by attending Briercrest Seminary with Maureen. He eagerly attended and audited almost every class with her, provided unwavering support and encouragement to her and many others there. Bob is survived by his loving wife Maureen; daughter Melanie Hardie (Dan Tollefson) of East Bethel, MN; four stepchildren: Leslie Aldridge and Mark Johnson of Calgary, AB, Mitch Boyko of Watson, SK, Heather Brown (Travis) of Lucky Lake, SK; and three grandchildren: Chanel, Levi and Shay all of Lucky Lake; two siblings: one brother Doug (Amy) Hardie of Edmonton; one sister Karen (Verne) Goodings of Fort St. John, BC; and several nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his father Jack (1968), mother Irene (1990) and his oldest brother, John (1974). He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by his family and by the many good people he befriended throughout his life. Please Note: A Memorial Service will be held in Swift Current, SK. on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of the Open Bible to celebrate his life. FRIESEN, Mark Elliott - April 18, 1989 - January 10, 2009. The night of Saturday, January 10th Mark passed away in a tragic accident at his dormitory residence in Toronto. He was only 19. Those who knew him will forever feel the loss of his presence and his potential. He leaves behind to grieve his parents Rudy and Dorothy Friesen (Oakville), brother Derek (Burlington), maternal grandmother Elisabeth Khn (Niagara) and the late John Khn, and paternal grandparents Franz and Auguste Friesen (Niagara). He leaves behind his paternal family: Hilda & John Kroeker, son Nevin (Niagara); Karl & Linda Friesen, children Matthew, Nathan, Lauren (Niagara); Helmut & Lucy Friesen, children Gary, Alex, Julia (Niagara); Lydia & Robert McKenzie, children Jordan, Kristen (Montreal); Dori & Craig Fowler, children Ryan, Corey (Niagara). His maternal family includes Edith & Ed Epp and their children Andrea, Scott, Audrey (Niagara). An exemplary young man, Mark succeeded in many fields with his hard work ethic and natural abilities. Mark was a graduate of Pilgrim Wood Public School and an honour student at Iroquois Ridge High School, both in Oakville. He was in his second year at the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Ryerson University, working towards a Bachelor degree of Urban and Regional Planning. Early on in life Mark had a paper route. He most recently worked in the Dairy section at Sobey's supermarket, and spent his summers on his aunt and uncle's fruit farm. He hoped to spend this summer planting trees in B.C. Always the sports fan and participant, Mark played and excelled at a variety of games; most noticeably hockey, where he played for the Oakville Rangers. Mark was a great outdoorsman, enjoying camping, swimming and kayaking Up North in Parry Sound. Mark Friesen was a tremendous individual, loved and well-liked by everyone he knew. His calming spirit, uplifting attitude and infectious smile will be missed but not forgotten. Mr. John Robert Hutton June 14, 1959 - January 7, 2009 49, Tantallon, passed away January 7, 2009, in the VG Site, QEII, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Born in Halifax, he was the son of Pearl (Romans) and the late John M. Hutton, Q.C. John graduated from Dalhousie University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree. He was a talented and hardworking landscaper; he owned and operated a landscaping business in the city for more than 35 years and was also a long-time employee of Yellow Cab. One of John's other passions was hockey. He was a member of the Black Street Aces hockey club for more than 25 years. John was predeceased by his father, John M. Hutton, Q.C. He is survived by his mother, Pearl (Romans), Halifax; sister, Iris (Jim) Coolen, Tantallon; daughter, Lauren, and sons, J.D., Andrew, and Stephen, all of Halifax. A special thank you goes out to John's long-time customers, who are more so friends, as well as the Black St. Aces, who were behind their teammate every step of the way.
