Doreen was born in Hat Creek, Saskatchewan on June 29, 1934. She grew up the eldest of seven children on a farm near Naicam, SK. She attended school in Naicam. She met her husband Art, while he was working on their family farm as a farm hand. They were married in 1951 in Melfort, SK and lived with Art’s family near Spalding. They had a daughter Judy born in 1952 and a son Ralph in 1956. In 1959 they moved to Fiske where they owned the hotel and then they bought the hotel in Spalding in 1965 where they lived and worked until 1972. Doreen sold Real Estate and taught Chinese cooking in the Humboldt and Melfort districts. They moved to Buffalo Narrows where she was the Administrator of the Community College. They moved to Nipawin to care for mentally and physically challenged people, and ran their own Care Homes in Humboldt and then in Saskatoon. Art and Doreen retired in 1994. Doreen’s husband Art passed away in 1995. Her little dog Miki was her companion for 10 years and they were not apart often. Doreen lived in Saskatoon and Martensville until her passing. Doreen loved spending time with her family, cooking, oil painting, sketching, playing cards with friends and family, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, reading and many art related crafts. Cooking was her passion and she loved cooking large meals for her family on holidays and birthdays. A special thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at St. Paul’s Hospital for their care of Doreen. A Memorial Service will be held on January 6, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home Chapel (east on 8th Street, turn right before railway crossing). Olga Elizabeth Borsa October 21, 1928 - January 1, 2009 BORSA – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Olga Elizabeth Borsa (nee Sorokowsky) who passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, January 1, 2009. She was born October 21, 1928 on a farm south of Yellow Creek, Saskatchewan to Stanley and Nellie Sorokowsky. Olga took her schooling at Stoneless School and attended high school in Yellow Creek and later attended Teacher’s College in Saskatoon 1946-47. Her first teaching job was at Sicizinski near Meacham, Saskatchewan in 1947-48 after which she moved to Meacham where she met and married her husband of 49 years, Sam Borsa. There she became a well respected and deeply loved teacher for hundreds of children over the years from 1948 until retirement in 1985 with exception of the years between 1951-59 when she took time off to raise her two daughters Gail and Donna. In 1977-78 they built their new home. Olga was a member of Meacham Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Meacham Homemakers’ Club and the Meacham Community Club. She was an active member of the community until 2003 when she moved into the Ilarion Residence in Saskatoon where she became a member of the All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Dibrova Ukrainian Folk Ensemble Choir, as well as participating in many activities at the Ilarion Residence. One of her lifelong passions was gardening, especially flowers. Upon moving to Saskatoon, she became a prolific knitter and was very skilled at crocheting, equipping many a friend and family member with afghans, sweaters and countless pairs of warm socks. In her less busy times she enjoyed reading and CBC radio. Predeceased by her parents, Stanley and Nellie Sorokowsky; husband Sam Borsa; sister Emily; brothers Nestor and Raymond; son Allan in infancy. Olga is survived by daughters Gail Borsa, Donna Borsa (Leon Weibe); grandchildren Lori Hankins, Jarod Forest, Aron Borsa, Carly Weibe, great-grandchildren Dylan Gellert, Tanner Gellert, Veronica Borsa. A Prayer Service for Olga will be held on Sunday, January 4, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. and a Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 5, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. with both services held from Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th Street, turn right before rail crossing) officiated by Very Reverend Bohdan Demczuk. MUNSON, Richard Elwood - Richard Elwood Munson 74, of Santa Ana California, a retired Gunnery Sergeant with the United States Marine Corp. and having served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War, died on January 2, 2009. Richard is survived by his beloved wife Winnifred (nee Dawson), and his brother David. FULFORD, Anna Winona (née Stevenson) - 1922-2009 Née à Harbour Grace, Terre-Neuve, épouse bien-aimée de feu George, Anna Winona Fulford (née Stevenson) est décédée le 6 janvier 2009, entourée de ses trois amours, Joni (Gordie) et Ruthie (Gord) de Thunder Bay et Mark. Ses soeurs Sadie et Vesta et son frère Frank lui survivent, prédécédée par Margaret et Clarence. Femme de carrière dès le début, durant la guerre elle a travaillé au département de physique à McGill, par la suite a été embauchée par NRC à la bibliothèque à Ottawa, puis s'est vue offrir un emploi à Chalk River, mais elle est revenue à Montréal pour fonder une famille. he death of Mrs. Gwen (Silliker) Saunders wife of the late Burton Saunders of Millerton, NB, occurred on Thursday, January 1, 2009 at the Miramichi Regional Hospital at the age of 86. Born in Sillikers, NB, she was the daughter of the late James and Minnie (Matthews) Silliker. Gwen was a homemaker who attended St. Peter's Anglican Church, Millerton. Gwen is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Comin (David) of Edmonton, AB; two sons, Darrell (Rubena) of Bartibog Bridge, NB and Robert (Glenda) of Millerton, NB; five grandchildren, Darla Saunders (Kirk Roach), Nancy Saunders, James Saunders, Matthew and Lauren Comin, several nieces and nephews. Gwen was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents, Gwen is predeceased by, sisters, Annetta, Jessie, Sadie, Annie, Elva, Margaret and Nellie; brothers, William, Warren, Hugh, Roy and Guy. The family received visitors at Bell's Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral service was held from The Sterling Bell Memorial Chapel on Monday, January 5, 2009 at 1 PM with Father Douglas Barrett officiating assisted by Father Robert Barry. 1943 - January 3, 2009 The family announces with deep sadness the passing of Ann Elizabeth Donovan, January 3, 2009 at Selkirk General Hospital in Selkirk, Manitoba. Born at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Ann grew up in Summerside, PEI and CFB Chatham, New Brunswick, and later attended nursing school in Eastern Quebec. Love and marriage took her to Western Canada where she would spend the rest of her life. Ann (who was also known as Betty) lived and worked in many locales including Dana and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Churchill, Winnipeg, Oxford House and Selkirk, MB. Ann retired in 2008 after many happy and dedicated years nursing at the Middlechurch Home in West St. Paul, MB. Ann will be remembered as a gentle, loving and sincere individual who placed great value upon kindness, faith and friendship. She was happiest in the company of her grandchildren or exploring the endless network of country back roads crisscrossing Southern Manitoba in her red pickup truck. Throughout her life, Ann maintained a playful rebellious streak and a keen, complex sense of humor which she employed often during her brave, year-long struggle with cancer. Ann was predeceased by a brother, Jimmy, in 1981 and her father Donald, in 1998. LATHROP, Mrs. Margaret - Died peacefully at her home, at the age of 92, on January 7, 2009. Survived by her husband, Daniel Whiting Lathrop, age 95; a loving partner for 69 years. Margaret Davison was born in Toronto on December 29, 1916. She was the daughter of Harold Doran Davison, founder of Welland Electric Steel Castings (d. 1965); and Helen Brown Haistings Davison (d. 1925). She was the great grand daughter of E.D. Davison, founder of the Davison Lumber Company, Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. She is pre-deceased by brother, Pilot Officer Harold H. Davison (d. 1942), killed during World War II. Margaret graduated from Branksome Hall, Toronto, in 1937, and from the Margaret Eaton School in 1939, the first school of women's physical education training in Canada. She taught at Camp Tanamakoon, Algonquin Park, Ontario and Branksome Hall, Toronto, until she married in 1940. She is survived by her children: Margot Helen Brebner, Mississauga, Ont., Harold Doran Lathrop, Welland, Ont., John Howland Lathrop, Upper LaHave, Nova Scotia, G. Edward Lathrop, Ottawa, Ont., and Anna Hildegarde Lathrop, Effingham, Ont. Margaret leaves 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. An avid sportswoman all her life, she enjoyed riding horses well into her 70s. She was faithful member of the Anglican Church of Canada, and gave generously to a host of charities and land stewardship initiatives. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Kidney Foundation of Canada or the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The memorial service will be held at St. David's Anglican Church, 369 Thorold Rd., Welland, Ont., on January 31st at 1 pm. CORNISH, George Henry May 25, 1931 - January 7, 2009 George Henry Cornish, beloved husband of Katie Ann Cornish of Calgary, passed away quietly on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at the age of 77 years. George will be deeply missed by his loving wife of fifty-two years, Katie Ann; their children, Ron (Donna), David and Sharon (Jonathan) and grandchildren; Trevor, Lucie, Emilie and Geoffrey. George was born and raised in Calgary. He graduated from Electrical Engineering at UBC in 1956 and subsequently started working for the City of Calgary Electric System. He rose through City management until he became Chief Commissioner in 1981. George retired from the City in 1989. During his time with the City, George was particularly proud of his involvement with the Illuminating Engineering Society, the 1988 Olympics, the formation of Nose Hill Park and bringing the C-Train to Calgary. After his retirement from the City, George was still involved in many different organizations including the University of Calgary, Enmax, Blue Cross, CODA, CRDA, the Calgary Airport Authority, the Calgary Board of Education and the Provincial Audit Committee. Although George was often very busy with work, he always found quality time to spend with his family. Many weekends and vacations were spent at the family cottage at Lake Windermere, enjoying the lake and gardens in the summer, and skiing in the winter. MACDONALD, Gertrude (nee Furlong) - The death occurred at the Timmins and District Hospital on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at age 93 years. She was predeceased by her husband Gerald MacDonald (1990), her daughter-in-law Eija (2003), parents Frank and Rose Furlong, sisters Rita Furlong, Mildred Furlong and Claire Penny and brothers Justin and Harold Furlong. Dear mother of Glen MacDonald of Schumacher, Grant MacDonald of Cookstown and Cathy (Peter) Morandin of Timmins. Dear sister of Marion (late Wally) Kearns of Toronto. Also survived by her daughter-in-law Linnette MacDonald of Schumacher and grandchildren Leila (Nico), Leena (Chris), Christine (Andy), Tammy, Guido (Amanda) and Christen Maria (Neil) as well as 7 great- grandchildren. Gertrude was born in Cobalt in 1915 and came to Schumacher in 1922, at the age of seven, and has resided there since. Her many years of employment began with the Consumers Co-operative Grocery Store. She was a founding member of Co-operators Insurance which she started in her home in Schumacher. For many years, she was also employed with the District of Cochrane Welfare Administration and later the City of Timmins Social Services Dept. Gertrude was a 70 year member of the St. Alphonsus Church C.W.L. and was very proud to be the oldest living member of the C.C.F. (NDP party of Canada) from 1937 up until her death. She was also a charter member of Consumer's Credit Union since 1938 as well as being a member of the Tisdale Recreation Board and was a past-president of the Schumacher-Matheson Red Cross. A private family service has been held with interment at Timmins Memorial Cemetery. Chuck was a chef by trade and was an involved member of the Moose Lodge of Chatham # 1692.
