BLANCHFIELD, Robert Roger - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Blanchfield, peacefully at his home, January 2, 2009 with his family by his side, at the age of 77. Very loved and cherished by his wife Elizabeth (Carr) Blanchfield for 54 years. He will be greatly missed by his daughters Linda Patterson and her husband Gary, Donna Soyka and her husband Robert, Kelly Blanchfield and her fiancé Rene. Proud grandfather to Melisa (Danny), Tanya, Shawn, Patrick (Cynthia), Anna and Allyson. Also proud great grandfather to Keynan, Soleil, Teven, Chase and Kaleb. Predeceased by his parents, Anna Marie and Fred Blanchfield and sister Yvette Washburn (2007). Dear brother to Paul (Eileen), George (late Jackie 2003), Art (Georgina) and Lucille McConnell (Jerry). Uncle Robert will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Robert worked at Ontario Hydro 36 years until his retirement in 1989. Robert for many years was involved in the Niagara Baseball Association, and designed and built the first creative playground now called Fern Park. Robert was a member of two marching bands, Memorial Militaries Alumni, and Bellerphon Bugle Band. He was very proud of his home and worked so hard at it. His soul and sprit will be missed by many. Robert will be resting at the NIAGARA FUNERAL HOME, 5647 Main St. Niagara Falls. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 5, 2009 2-4PM and 7- 9PM. SIMPSON, Winifred (nee Gordon) - Passed away peacefully on Sunday January 4, 2009 at Hospice Niagara after a courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by her loving husband Peter in 1998. Lovingly remembered by her children Janet and her husband Larry Lane, of Calgary, Ruth and her husband Bob Puhach, of St. Catharines and Peter Simpson and his wife Suzanne Tobin, of Toronto. McKIBBON, Joyce Helen Gertrude (nee Drew) - Suddenly, at the Sault Area Hospital on Friday, December 19, 2008 at the age of 90 years. Beloved wife of the late Walter. Proud mother of the late Ernest. Daughter of the late Elsie and Ernie Drew. Joyce leaves behind 'her girls', Barbara and Roberta Bondar, cousin Patricia Spear (Wyck, UK), devoted friends Marian Okmanus, Gayle Smith, Harold Brain and her family of incomparable caregivers, Lori Aubrey and Marney Mills. Joyce devoted decades of community service to the Canadian Red Cross, St. Luke's Women's Auxilliary (Life Member), the Plummer Memorial Hospital Women's Auxilliary (Past President), helped inaugurate the Plummer Memorial Hospital Gift Shop. A trained soprano, Joyce was a featured concert performer and the first woman soloist of St. Luke's Cathedral Choir. CIENIK, John Frank (Jay) - Peacefully on Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 at the Welland Hospital in his 84th year. Beloved husband of Stella (nee Tymochko) for 61 years. Loving father of Larry (Fran), Andy (Sharon), Len (Cindy) and the late Marvin (Ida). Proud Gido of Krista, Joel, Jaclyn (Larry) and Jessica. Predeceased by his parents Andrew and Mary, sisters Kay and Jean. John was a Veteran of WWII, serving with the Canadian Army in Europe. John worked for Ontario Paper for 42 years before retiring in 1990. John was active for 38 years with the Thorold South Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid fan of the Blue Jays, Stock Car Racing, and Joel's hockey and baseball. EPP, Helmut Adolf, FCGA - At Tabor Manor in St. Catharines on Saturday, January 3, 2009. Born January 21, 1927 in St. Boniface (Winnipeg) Manitoba, he was the son of Abraham (1971) and Anna (Loewen) Epp (1980) late of Niagara On The Lake. Beloved husband for 50 years of the late Audrey (Jones) Epp (2003) and dear father of Kathleen and husband Bill Hughson and Graham Epp. Loving grandfather of Geoffrey, Bradley and Stacey Hughson. Dear bother of the late Rudy (2005) and wife Irma Epp, the late Ted Epp (1989), Reverend Leonard and wife Martha Epp, Herb and wife Jane Epp and the late Vern Epp (1997). Son in law of the late Francis (1988) and Gladys (Lines) Jones (2004), brother in law of the late Rodney (1996) wife Carol Jones. Helmut came to the Niagara area from Manitoba in 1941. He was a certified general accountant (CGA) and former trust company manager. Over the years he was actively involved with the Niagara Symphony Orchestra, Merritton Lions Club, Canadian Red Cross Society, CGA, and the Ontario Genealogical Society. Cremation has taken place. LOSHAK, Annie - Passed away at the Greater Niagara General Hospital, on Friday, January 2, 2009 in her 83rd year. Predeceased by her husband Nick (April 1996). CARTWRIGHT, Rev. Msgr. John J. “Jack“ -Peacefully at Extendicare in St. Catharines on Saturday, January 3, 2009. Beloved son of the late Helen (nee O'Boyle) and Jack Cartwright. Predeceased by his brother Tom and his sister-in-law Gloria. He will be dearly missed by his sister Mary (John) Scanlon as well as his cousins, nieces, nephews and his many loyal friends and priestly fraternity in the Diocese of St. Catharines, where he served faithfully and unselfishly for over 55 years. Msgr. Cartwright served in the St. Catharines Diocese in various parishes throughout the Niagara Region, most recently serving at St. Denis Church and in his retirement he stayed at St. Alfred's Church. He will be missed by the residents and staff of Extendicare that he called home for the past 4 years. PORTEOUS, Mary Jean - April 06, 1930 - January 02, 2009. Peacefully at Kelso Pines Retirement Lodge on January 2, 2009. In her 79th year. Mary Jean Porteous (nee MacDonald), beloved wife of 46 years to the late Jim. Loving mother of Susan and her husband Jeff Cumming of Ottawa, Sharrie and her husband Bill Woodley of Stratford, Jim of Rockwood, Nancy and her husband Craig Moore of Guelph and Mary Ann and her husband Scott Baker of Waterloo. Caring grandmother of Michael and Heather, Alex, Sarah and William, Jane and Cameron, Adam and Jonathan, Jack, Laura and Graham. Mary will be fondly remembered by her sister Elizabeth and her husband (Bill) Gillies and by her sisters-in- law Dorothy and her husband Clarence Graham, LeOla and her husband Art Eyres and Vickie and her husband Paul Storm and by many nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by her brother Neil MacDonald and by her brother in-law Mac Porteous. Mary was born and raised in Owen Sound, Ontario and graduated in nursing from the General and Marine Hospital, Owen Sound in 1952. Mary was the consummate caregiver and homemaker, believing family came first. She was a loving wife, devoted mother and beloved grandmother. The family gratefully thanks Dr. Fred Veenstra of Owen Sound and the nursing staff of the Victoria Hospital and University Hospital in London and especially the nursing staff of the Kelso Pines Retirement Lodge in Owen Sound for the compassionate care provided to Mary. FASSOULAS, Idomeneas. 1939 - 2009. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Idomeneas Fassoulas after a courageous fight on January 3, 2009, surrounded by his family. Survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Georgia and his adoring children, Helen and Nick Vrentzos, Billy and Terya Fassoulas, and his "pride and joy" grandchildren, Manousso and Margarita, as well as his cherished family, Emmanuel Tsontakis & family, John Niktaris and family, Stefanos Fassoulas & family, family in Greece, nieces, nephews, friends. MacAULAY, Elizabeth (Betty) Somerville (nee Shaw) August 19, 1922 - January 1, 2009 Betty was born and raised in Ottawa where she was employed with the Canada Year Book and Canada Coal Commission. At the start of WW II she met Ted MacAulay in Ottawa and the two were married on his return from overseas. They returned to Ted's hometown of Banff in 1946, started a family in 1947, keeping Betty busy for many years. She joined the staff of the Banff Centre in the 1970's eventually retiring as their head librarian. She was very proud of a scholarship the Centre endorsed in her name. Betty took a keen interest in quilting producing many beautiful, cherished and award winning pieces over the years. Predeceased by her brothers Bill (1972), Gord (1994), twin sister Peggy (1983) and husband Ted (1984), Betty is survived by her sons Tim (Marie) and Hugh (Debi), daughter Jill (Dale) Cardinal, grandchildren Kyle and Amy, a brother Bayne and nephew Chris and niece Jennifer. She is also survived by her best friend and sister-in-law Karin MacAulay and nieces and nephews, Herb, Karen, Shelley, John, Jodi and Julie Ann. Betty loved Banff and truly enjoyed its residents, her neighbours and her many good friends. A very kind, gentle and gracious lady, she will be fondly remembered. STOUT, Raymond (Ray) October 28, 1928 - December 25, 2008 Ray Stout, beloved husband of Mavis Stout, father of Gene, Pam, Ross, and Terri, and grandfather of Veronica and Braden, passed away on Christmas Day, 2008. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by three sisters, Carol, Ruth and Frances; and a brother Les. He was a master carpenter and an artisan with wood. Born in Saskatchewan, he completed technical school, moved to Alberta, and worked in the construction industry. His artistry with creating wood fixtures and sculptures merited notices in architectural journals. Ray will be forever lovingly remembered. TRUDEAU, Wilfred, Theodore March 27, 1927 - January 2, 2009 - Wilfred Trudeau, a resident of the Wikwemikong Nursing Home, died at the Manitoulin Health Centre, Little Current, on Friday January 2, 2009 at the age of 81 years. He was born at Wikwemikong, son of the late Michael Anthony and Maria Joanna (Pangowish) Trudeau. Wilfred was an important part of his community. He had worked as an Addiction Counsellor, a Helmsman on the Great Lakes, a commercial fisherman and was a jack of all trades. He was a veteran of WW 11 serving with the United States 101st Airborne. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and horse racing. Wilfred will be remembered for being quite a character, liking a good joke and kidding people. Wilfred was predeceased by his beloved wife Gertrude (Pitawanakwat) Trudeau. Loving and loved father of Allan of Toronto, Ray and Cynthia of Wikwemikong, Janice Trudeau of Ottawa, Leah and Fred Migwans of M'Chigeeng, Tim of Toronto, Stephanie of Winnipeg, Lorne and friend Lisa of Thunder Bay, Patrick of Sudbury and Alanna of Wikwemikong. 1954 - 2008 Donna Lynne Martin, widow of the late Rene Martin, of Route 117, Bay du Vin, passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital, on Friday, December 26, 2008, at the age of 54. Born in Bay du Vin, on September 2, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Windsor and Violet (Dutcher) Kingston. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Bay du Vin. She is survived by one son, Trevor Martin (Crystal), of Bathurst; five sisters, Jane De Bruyne, Nancy Fraser, Dorothy Bingham (Brian), Judy McLenaghan (Roy), Beverley MacDonald (Randy), all of Bay du Vin; five brothers, Bliss Kingston (Laudia), Windsor (Butch) Kingston (Lily), Alan Kingston (Gail), Peter Kingston (Dawn), all of Bay du Vin, Steven Kingston (Lynn), of Miramichi; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, one daughter, Kimberly; one brother, Joseph Kingston; one infant sister, Deborah Kingston. By her request, there will be no visitation at the funeral home. A public memorial service was held from St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Bay du vin, on Friday, January 2, 2009, at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. Richard Steeves. The music for the service was provided by Mrs. Dawn Bell and the hymns were "Jesus, Saviour, Pilot Me", "Jesus Loves Me" and "Safe In the Arms Of Jesus". Doris Snook of Blackville, NB passed away peacefully at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Sunday, December 28, 2008 at the age of 93. Born in the Grey Rapids February 22, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Sturgeon & Charlotte(Curtis) Sturgeon. She was a homemaker and long time member of the United Pentecostal Church in Blackville, NB. Doris is survived by 2 daughters, Dawn(Lloyd) Burdick of Sylvan Lake, AB, Grace Snook of Blackville, NB; one son, Peter (Michelle) Snook of Breslau ON; and 2 stepsons, Walter (Joan) Henry/Snook of Rockland, ON and Richard (Eleanor) of Benalto, AB. She leaves to mourn 11 grand children and three great grandchildren and various nieces and nephews. Lovingly remembered by many relatives and friends. The focus of Béatrice's life was her loving family who will miss her dearly. A former parishioner of Azilda, she was active in her community, among others, former member of the “Femmes de la federation canadiennes françaises“ of Azilda and was a member of the Solitude Myriam. Fernand Préville, fils de feu Oscar Préville et de feu Edwige Bourgeois, demeurant à Saint-Gabriel et autrefois de Saint-Ambroise.
