KOWALSY,Karl James - On December 27, 2008 after a courageous battle with Alzheimers. Born April 19, 1933. Karl served in the Navy and was a fierce boxer and an avid sports fan. He will be greatly missed by Joyce, his wife and soul mate of 45 years. ZGRAJA, Jozef Henrich - August 1, 1916 to December 26, 2008 - Passed away peacefully at the Sault Area Hospital after a long struggle with numerous health issues. Beloved husband of Hilde, loving father of Roswita and Helmut (Susan) and foster daughter Debbie. Devoted grandfather of Nicholas, Adam and Katarina. Born in Poland to the late Piotr and Katarzyna, he immigrated to Canada in 1948 and settled in Sault Ste. Marie where he was employed for many years at Algoma Steel. Together with Hilde, he also owned and operated a dairy farm and later a market garden operation in Prince Township. As Jozef approached retirement age, he turned his energies to public service, and he served Prince Township, first as Road Superintendent and later as Councillor. A proud Canadian, he had a keen interest in politics and world affairs, which he followed to the end. Jozef was devoted to his family and his community. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the Sault Area Hospital for their compassionate care of their husband, father and grandfather in recent years, and requests that memorial donations in lieu of flowers be made to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation. WHYNOTT, Captain James Oran - On December 25, 2008 at the St. Catharines General Hospital at the age of 86 succumbed peacefully due to complications of a sudden illness. His loving wife Sadie of 52 years predeceased him on January 16, 2006. He will be greatly missed by his loving daughter Carol Ann Vester (Bryan) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and his grandchildren Amanda, Caitlin, and Corey. Born in Cherry Hill, Lunenburg County, N.S., Jim's fascination of the ocean made his career path an easy one to choose. In his younger years he joined the Merchant Marines and survived World War II at sea. He returned to Canada where he continued his training and joined Canada Steamship Lines in 1953, which later became part of FedNav Limited in 1982. His dedication and hard work brought him up the ranks of Officer and finally Captain of many freighters and ocean bound vessels. In June of 1980 Jim was asked to Captain the newest built self- unloading bulk carrier ship the Nanticoke that he retired from in 1986. He will be forever remembered for his stories and numerous pictures of his lifetime ventures throughout the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway. LEEK, (Bill) Joseph William - Bill passed away on December 26, 2008 at Extendicare in St.Catharines, Ontario. Beloved husband of Marion Leek, brother of Vera Youngblut, dear father of David (Betsy), Don (Lorette), Linda (John), and Carolyn (Bill). Loving grandfather of Joshua, Betsy Jr., Jason, Meghan, and Allister; loving great- grandgrandpa to Sayde, Owyne, and Brady. Bill was born and raised in St.Catharines, Ontario. Bill was predeceased by his father Bert and mother Alice, sister Violet, and brothers Bob and Jim. Bill was a skilled tool and die maker at Hayes Dana for 49 years in Thorold, Ontario. Bills interests were in his love of music, church choir, Men of Song, St.Catharines Barbershoppers. Bill also had a love for camping, fishing, golf, and many years of playing darts in Port Dart League in St.Catharines. Marion and family would like to thank all the staff at Extendicare Nursing Home for all the loving care and attention given to him while in their care. MABLEY, Clarence Borden - Born Gormley, Ontario, December 17, 1917. Passed away peacefully at Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie, on December 19, 2008 in his 92nd year. Survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Eden Mabley, daughter Jane Walker (John) of Edmonton, Dr. John of Halifax, and Dr. Bruce (Jacqueline) of Montreal, as well as grandchildren Melissa (Kirk), Jessica (Nigel), Laura (Christopher), Neill, Iain, Alexandra, and Richard. Predeceased by first wife, Margaret MacPhee, and granddaughter, Sarah. Clare, or “B” as he was affectionately known to family in Richmond Hill, established his first career in professional sales following service with the RCAF, and rose to direct hospital supply sales nationally for the Texpack company. He subsequently became a respected and successful entrepreneur in the Agincourt, Ontario community leasing multiple Texaco service station sites. He was a member of the Shrine Order, a past master of East Gate Lodge AF & AM and a life member of Richmond Lodge AF & AM. Barrie area friends and neighbours will celebrate Clare's life at Simcoe Terrace, 44 Donald Street, Barrie, on Wednesday, December 31 at 2:30 PM. Mr. Delbert Charles Newans - December 22, 2008 NEWANS, DELBERT CHARLES On December 22, 2008 Delbert Newans passed away peacefully at the age of 74 years. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife Violet of 39 years, their son Steven (Kimiko) Newans, stepchildren; Linda (Luke) Dumontier and Brian (Carolyn) Gledhill. He will also be missed by his three daughters; Debbie (Doug) Neis, Donna (Lou) Valckx, Dianne (Eddy) Carless and his sons David and Ernie Newans , sixteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren, four brothers, Ken (Mae), Wayne (Marg), Gordon (Dixie) and Byron (Cathie) Newans, three sisters; Ada Barager, Darlene (Glen) Whitney and Beverly Newans, sister-in-law Elsie, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Delbert was predeceased by his brothers; Roy and Gerald, sister Eta. Delbert served with the Canadian Armed Forces for 26 years, then went on to spend the next 11 years with Corrections Canada. He was also a member for 36 years with AA. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 29, 2008 at 2:00 p.m.at the Evergreen Funeral Chapel, 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton. Mr. Peter Jaspar February 25, 1919 - December 22, 2008 Mr. Peter Jaspar passed away at the Victoria Hospital on December 22, 2008 at the age of 89 years. Mr. Abboud Hanna Toulany November 18, 1915 - December 23, 2008 TOULANY, Abboud Hanna 93, Halifax, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 23, 2008. Abboud who was one of seven children was born in Minyara, Akkar, Lebanon in 1915 to the late Hanna and Kamlie Toulany (birth mother) and Khawla Toulany. Abboud will be remembered for his energetic spirit, determination and tremendous work ethic. He was well-known as "Pops" by his community in the north end of Halifax, and was an active member of Our Lady of Lebanon Church. Pops undoubtedly left a lasting impression on all who knew him and will be missed dearly. In his early years, Abboud followed his father's footsteps as a camel herder and later immigrated to Canada in 1975 to establish a family business entrepreneurship. He is survived by his wife, Marsha Toulany and his children, Hanna "John", Kamlie "Kim", Bechora "Bash", Nabil "Bill", Samira, Samir "Sam", along with 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Abboud was the eldest and last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Donald Wayne Singer May 12, 1937 - December 23, 2008 71 Lower Sackville, formally of North Noel Road, passed away so peacefully to a better place after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was the eldest son of the late Ruth Collier of Halifax. Don was a welder at Dexter Construction at the time of his death. Don's passions in life were hunting and fishing starting at a very young age. He especially liked to go to his best friend's Bill Penny's camp on the Eastern Shore where many tall tales were told. He also liked to go to his own camp in Stewiacke at Clint Mathiews' Dairy farm from where he hunted with his young buddy, Evan Mathiews and enjoyed it so much. Don leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Judy (Whitford); daughter, Karen and son, Paul (Renee); sisters, Gwen (Eldie) Richard, Debbie Collier; brother, David (Marilyn) and many nieces and nephews, especially our niece, Catherine, who called so often and lent an ear. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruby, in 2005; seven sisters, Stella MacKight, Rose Barnes, Bessie Gilliss, Mildred Dickson, infant sisters Lylla and Emma MacInnis; two brothers, Bryden (Bud), and Leonard MacInnis. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Saturday. The funeral service was held from Carmel United Church, Napan, on Sunday, December 21, 2008, at 1 pm, conducted by Rev. Charlene Maguire MacKnight. Music for the service was provided by William Sweezey and the hymns were "Be Thou My Vision", "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Blest Be The Tie That Binds". The honorary pallbearers were Bill Taylor, Alvin Taylor, Leigh MacDonald, Billy Taylor, Guy Taylor, Mr. MacInnis, Terry MacDonald and Xavier Richard. Active pallbearers were John Dickson, John Gilliss, Brian MacInnis, Roger Conroy, Bob MacKenzie and Shawn Taylor. Interment will be in the Black River Community Cemetery, later in the spring. Owen Fraser Trevors It's not the years in your life... But the life in your years" It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Owen Fraser Trevors, age 33, which occurred at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Tuesday December 16th, 2008. Born in Bathurst, N.B. on June 28, 1975, Fraser was the son of Evelyn (Curtis) and the late Owen Trevors. Fraser was the beloved husband of Heather (Bowes) Trevors and a devoted father to Owen Joesph (3 years) and Isaac Fraser (10 months). He will also be lovingly remembered by his mother Evelyn Trevors, brother Douglas Trevors (Jean), sister, Jocelyn MacTavish (Jeff), several nieces, a nephew, and extended family members, all of Miramichi. Fraser was employed with NB Power working as Power Engineer at the Belledune Generating Station. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Saint Michael's Basilica Saturday December 20th, 2008 with Father John Fraser officiating, and assisted by Father Leon Creamer and Reverend Gordon Thompson. Active pallbearers were: Mark Barry, James Donald, Kevin Gardiner, Trevor MacCallum, Jason Mullin and Daryl Sullivan. An honor guard was formed by Fraser's coworkers from NB Power. Interment followed at Saint Michael's cemetery. Fraser was a kind, thoughtful person who lived for his family, and will be missed deeply by everyone who loved him. The death of Mrs. Florence Elizabeth Preston, wife of Cecil P. Preston of Ferry Road, NB, occurred on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at the Miramichi Regional Hospital at the age of 81. Born in Douglastown, NB, she was the daughter of the late William and Clara (Edmunds) Vautour. Florence was a homemaker who attended All Saint Roman Catholic Church, Millbank, NB. DEMERS, Joseph - A resident of Chatham. Joseph Demers died Friday December 26, 2008 at Victoria Hospital, London at the age of 76.
