Mrs. Luigia (Gina) Zanutto September 1, 1921 - December 11, 2008 ZANUTTO It is with great sadness that the family of Luigia (Gina) Zanutto (nee Martello) announces her peaceful passing on December 11, 2008. Born September 1, 1921 in Merano, Italy she immigrated to Canada in 1958 and was a long-time Westfort resident and member of St. Agnes Parish. She was employed as a governess in Italy and then part-time custodian in Canada until her retirement. As a recent resident of Pinewood Court, Gina continued to enjoy the company of her long time friend Bianca and together with their friends old and new, actively participated in many social events and attended the in-house church services. She was a life member of the Ladies Venet Society, enjoyed reading, took her card playing very seriously, was an avid gardener, meticulously caring for her vegetables and flowers, especially her roses. She loved going to camp with her godson Lawrence and his family and always went for a dip in the lake as well as pruning and planting anything she determined needed doing!! Gina is predeceased by her husband Bonino Riva and Arturo Zanutto, parents Luigia Zuchiatti and Ludvico Martello, sister Ema Salveti and nephew Ettore Salveti (all in Italy). She is survived by her dear sister Yolanda Brida, cousin Sister Carmen, nieces and nephews. Funeral mass will be held at St. Agnes on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Father James. Visitation for family and friends will be on Monday, December 15, 2008 from 6 – 8 p.m. with prayers at 6:00 p.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home. KUWAHARA, Chizuno "Ceo" (nee Okabe) April 9, 1923 - December 11, 2008 Ceo Kuwahara, treasured daughter and sister, much loved wife and mother, impish grandmother and great-grandmother slipped quietly away on the morning of Thursday, December 11, 2008 at the age of 85. Ceo was born Chizuno Okabe on April 9, 1923 in Mission, B.C., the third of six children and first daughter of Denjiro and Taki Okabe. In 1946 she married Tom Kuwahara and made her home in Calgary. The forced move of the Okabe family to southern Alberta during World War II did not suppress her indomitable spirit. Her kitchen was always full of warmth and laughter, her garden filled with colour and light. She gave to her husband and four children patience, generosity and kindness. She wrapped her grandchildren in a blanket of security and love. She taught her children and grandchildren how to laugh and sing. Ceo leaves behind husband Tom; daughters, Linda Callaghan, Arlene Kuwahara; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Judy Kuwahara; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Sam Oshiro; grandchildren, Patrick, Miyoko, Sean, Ian, Tom, Steven, Jennifer, Stephanie and Kimberley; and great-grandchildren, Sofia, Chloe and Sadie. She lived a full and rewarding life. God saw she was suffering and took her to the eternal light. She rests at peace now. OBITUARY FELICE DI PAOLA 1925-2008 Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. After a long and courageous battle, at the age of eighty-three, Felice Di Paola passed away on December 10, 2008 at the Cite de la Sante Hospital in Laval. Born on Februrary 16, 1925 in Vezzara, Caserta, Italy, Felice immigrated to Canada in search of a better future for his growing family; a life which he gave his wife and ten children through years of tireless hard work, selfless love and unending devotion. A true patriarch, Felice was the glue that held his large family together; a man respected by all, a man everyone gravitated to, a man everyone loved and sought to be loved by. Felice, in Italian means happy, a name which he truly lived up to, as even the simplest pleasures in life made this great man smile. He leaves behind his beloved wife of sixty-four years, Concetta Di Paola (nee Simone), his ten children and their spouses Filippo (the late Fortunata), Carolina (Nicodemo), Eraldo (Maria), Anna, Pina (Rocco), Antonietta (Pasquale), Palma (Luigi), Massimo (Mari-Louise), Carmela (Rico), Maria (Ilario) as well as his cherished twenty-two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His beautiful presence will be greatly missed. PENN, Carol Elaine. The death of Carol Penn of Rothesay, NB, wife of James Penn, occurred Tuesday, December 9, 2008, at the Kings Way Care Centre, Quispamsis, NB. Born in Hartland, NB, she was the daughter of the late Leigh and Catherine (Taylor) Thornton. Carol lived in Montreal, Quebec and was a loyal employee of Bell Canada from 1952-1967. She was also employed with Crane McAvity, located in St. John's, New Brunswick from 1981-1984. Carol was affectionately known as "Mama Penn" by many Kennebecasis Valley High School students in the mid 1980s. Besides her husband, James, Carol is survived by one son, Brian Penn (Maureen), Saint John, NB; one sister, Sally Meehan, Greenfield Park, QC; several nieces and nephews and many cousins. The Penn family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of 3CS for the loving care Carol received during her two year stay at the Saint John Regional Hospital. At the family's request, there will be no visitation or memorial service. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. ROBERTSON, James (Robbie). 1924 - 2008. Born in Dunblane, Scotland, on March 20, 1924, he peacefully passed away on November 29, 2008 at the West Vancouver Care Center with his son Paul by his side. Beloved husband of the late Isabel. He leaves behind his devoted children Karen (Gerald Ouellette) and Paul (Michel Bourquin), his precious grandchildren Paul and Elizabeth. He will also be missed by many other relatives and friends. James was an RAF Veteran (WWII) and spent more than forty years at Air Canada. In retirement, he enjoyed golfing, curling, reading, crossword puzzles and walking with his two friends Charley and Lady (minx). BADGER, Kenneth Edwin May 17, 1961 - December 3, 2008 On December 3, 2008, in the manner that he was born, Ken passed away in Calgary at the age of 47, prematurely. Born in Winnipeg, MB on May 17, 1961, who would have guessed the tiny orange preemie would grow to be such a "big" man. He graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1984, working in Winnipeg, Saudi Arabia, Halifax, Connecticut, and lastly in Calgary at the Foothills ER. Ken's ability to make people laugh, his quick wit, his generosity and willingness to help out putting others before himself endeared Ken to all who knew him. Ken is survived by his mother, Shirley Badger in Gimili, MB; sisters, Carol Martin and Janice (Dennis) Weiss; niece, Jennifer (Andrew) Percy and their children, Zoe, Bryanna, and Gabriel (his buffet partner); best friend and "Ya-Ya sister" Allison Murdoch-Schon; god-daughters, Emily and Claire; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. BRIDGE, Ursula (nee von Muhldorfer) September 10, 1923 - December 9, 2008 Ursula Bridge, or "Ushie" as she was affectionately known by her family and friends was placed in the arms of the Lord on December 9, 2008. Born and raised in Germany, Ursula met her surviving husband of sixty-one years, William Bridge, at the end of World War II as a translator for the British troops. They immigrated to Canada in 1956 and settled in Calgary where they raised their three young children. The journey continued west when they moved to Victoria in 1972. Ursula has touched many throughout her life and will always be remembered for her welcome nature, generosity, and commitment to family and friends. With her love for the outdoors and friendship, Ursula enjoyed her many friends in the walking group, teaching Tai Chi Chih, and singing in the St. Andrew's Church choir. Even though she led an active lifestyle she always made time for those around her. Known for her brunches, dinners, and social events, Ushie had an ability to bring people together and a passion for celebrating life events. Her afternoon tea and conversations will be missed particularly by her husband William (Bill), brothers Charles and Otto von Muhldorfer, children Marion (Thomas) Aussenegg, Gary (Vicki) and Marty (Julie) Bridge and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. DYER, Norma Jean 1927 - 2008 Mrs. Norma Jean Dyer, of High River, passed away at the High River Hospital on December 11, 2008 at the age of 81 years. KOSTYNIUK, Michael September 23, 1921 - December 10, 2008 On December 10, 2008, Mike Kostyniuk passed away peacefully at the age of 87 years. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Mike joined the army in 1941 and was transferred to Calgary where he met and married Dorothy, his beloved wife of sixty-four years. Mike served proudly in WWII and overseas in Korea. He travelled to many places and touched many lives during his twenty-nine years in the Forces, sixteen years with SAIT and in his retirement. Over the years, he was an active member of Scouts, the Legion and Confederation Park Seniors Centre. Mike loved bowling, trips to Vegas and Hawaii with Dorothy and friends, reading, puttering around the house, and sitting in the sun. He enjoyed a stiff drink, a good joke, and a lively song and dance. His upbeat character and love of life will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by Dorothy, his sons Larry and Jimmy, family, friends, and all who knew him. NICOLAI, ANDREI Andrei Nicolai was born in Bucharest, Romania 24 January 1950, and died in Calgary 10 December 2008 of metastatic ocular melanoma. He emigrated to Canada in 1977 and worked as an architect, urban planner and urban designer in several cities and towns in Canada; as a researcher, Sessional Instructor and Adjunct Professor in Environmental Design at the University of Calgary; and as a professor of urban planning and developer in Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates. In addition to his architectural education in Romania, Dr. Nicolai held several degrees: MScArch from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, MEDes (Urban and Regional Planning) from the University of Calgary, and PhD (Urban Design) from Oxford Brookes University, UK. He was an adventurer, motorcyclist, traveler, skier, hiker, and entrepreneur, and authored or co-authored many articles, book chapters, and two award-winning books on urban planning and design, and most recently was engaged in professional research into a sustainable model of development inspired by traditional Arabian town form and vernacular architecture. He leaves behind his wife Dr. Beverly A. Sandalack of Calgary, dearly loved aunt and uncle Pop Gheorghe in Romania, and mother Maria Solomon in Israel. He made a difference, and he will be missed. OLIVER, Keith October 11, 1938 - December 9, 2008 Keith Oliver, beloved husband of Mary Oliver of Calgary, passed away on December 9, 2008 at the age of 70 years. Keith lived a tremendous life, full of love and friendships. His career took him from the British Navy, to an English Police Officer. He then moved to Canada, settling in Calgary, where he worked in many different positions. In his retirement, Keith worked on the Security team at Westmont Place, until his illness forced him to resign. He will always be remembered by many for his dedication to his duties, regardless of what position he held and it was his professionalism, that set him apart from the ordinary. Keith will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Keith's memory will be entrusted to his loving wife of forty-nine years, Mary Oliver.
