CASSERLY, Robert - Cass passed away at the North Bay General Hospital on Sunday December 7th, 2008 after a valiant battle with Parkinsons and Cancer. The loving husband of Donna and dear father of Pamela (Shawn), Chris, Jane (Gerard) and grandfather to Kyra, Cass was predeceased by a son Patrick, a brother Emmet and his parents. He will be fondly remembered and missed by his mother in law Juliana Donati, his sisters Patricia (Harvey) and Margaret, his brother in law Anthony Donati and sister in law Jean Casserly and by his nieces and nephews. Cass had a zest for life and lived each day to the fullest. Despite the struggles of the last year he never complained and continued to display his wonderful sense of humor. Many thanks to the friends who remembered his vitality and continued to appreciate his stories. He looked forward to their visits. At Cass's request cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL (across from city hall) at 11:00 am on Saturday December 13, 2008. OBITUARY MARIAN AGNES MacDONALD Passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 7, 2008, at the age of ninety-three. Beloved mother of Sandra Smith (James J.) and L. Ian MacDonald. Devoted Grandmother to James Smith (Barbara Nixon-Smith), Andrew Smith (Anya Smith), Michael Smith, Christina Smith (Joshua Cundill), and Grace Martha MacDonald. Great-grandmother to Bond, Taylor, Hunter, Max, Mary Clementine and Nathaniel. Predeceased in 1958 by her beloved husband, Arthur Lamond (Art) MacDonald. Born in Halifax in 1915, Marian MacDonald was a career nurse who became Matron of the Queen Mary Veteran's Hospital. Her many friends included members of her bridge and curling circles. Special thanks to the staff of St. Margaret's Nursing Home in Westmount for their devoted care during her final years. CONNELLY, Thomas (Tom) October 1, 1922 - December 5, 2008 Thomas (Tom) Connelly, beloved husband of Irene Connelly of Calgary, passed away on Friday, December 5, 2008 at the age of 86 years. Tom was the eldest of five, born into a devout Scottish Catholic family of coal miners in Drumheller, AB in 1922. His future was shaped by a childhood during the Great Depression and the service of his country during the Second World War. One of Tom's great passions was reading about the history of war and conflict, especially "the Irish troubles". After the war, Tom graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and embarked upon a successful career that spanned thirty-nine years, but most importantly served to introduce him to his future wife Irene (nee Timms). Tom and Irene were married in 1952 and enjoyed fifty-six years together, mostly in Calgary, where they were founding members of St. Gerard's Catholic Church and raised a family of four successful children who would eventually provide them with the nine grandchildren whose activities consumed Tom's retirement years. Tom is survived by Irene, their children and grandchildren, Tim and Michele Connelly (Danielle and Peter), Cathy Connelly (Megan and Carson Ferguson), Dan and Marnie Connelly (Tom, Joe and Greg), Carolyn and Carl Chala (Paul and Marcus) and by his sister and brother-in-law, Nan and Jules Saganski and many nieces and nephews. REID, William Alton "Al" March 21, 1921 - December 6, 2008 Al passed away Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Carewest Sarcee in Calgary. He was predeceased by his wife, Pearl Reid, in 2007 and daughter-in-law, Joanne Reid, in 2004. He is survived by his devoted companion Rhoda Thompson and six children: Cheryl (John) Syberden, Coleen Reid, Beth (Bob) Kilbach, Debbie (Keith) Krausert, Russell Reid, Blake (Fiona) Reid; also eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, his sister Lola Bezaire of Kingsville, Ontario and dear family friend, Bill Doddridge. Al was born in Windsor (Sandwich), Ontario. He was an all-star collegiate football player in his youth and enjoyed many sports. Al was a hockey referee for many years and remained active in sports into his eighties. Al served overseas from 1941 to 1945 in the RCAF as Flight Lt. in 411 Spitfire Squadron and was a life member of the Canadian Fighter Pilots Association. To recent days he shared a special kinship with friends at the Calgary Air Crew Association. Al was employed for twenty-five years at Maclin Ford. Al's passing leaves a tremendous void in his family. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Following Interment at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens, a private celebration of Al's life will be held. EDMISON, Dr. Ralph Staples. September 16, 1916 - December 7, 2008. Passed away peacefully in his sleep following a brief illness. Beloved husband of Mary Hall (deceased) and predeceased by sister Dorothy, he leaves to mourn his children Robert (Joanne Bush) of Hudson, Quebec, Mardy (Walter Langford) of Elora, Ontario, Janet of Montreal, Quebec and Judy (Peter Gordon) of Squamish, B.C., seven granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. Born in Keene, Ontario, Ralph grew up in several surrounding communities where his father served as a United Church minister. He obtained his Commerce degree from Queen's University in 1938 and his D.D.S. from McGill University's Faculty of Dentistry in 1943. Following three years of service in the Canadian Dental Corps, Ralph set up a dental practice in Montreal and later in Hudson, retiring in 1986. PHILLIPS, Joseph Alexander - Of Niagara Falls, formerly of Welland, passed away on Sunday December 7, 2008 at the Greater Niagara General Hospital at the age of 86 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Theresa Phillips (nee Grady). Loving father of Dan Phillips and his wife Sandra of Niagara Falls and Jim Phillips of Calgary, Alberta. Loving grandfather of Ashley, Justin, Andrew and Matthew. He will be sadly missed by his sister Irene Korody of Welland, many sisters-in-law and his many nieces and nephews. II, the last remaining founder of the Wainfleet Fire Department and a member of the Parish Community of St. Kevin. TABOR, Allen Robert 2008-12-09 Allen Robert Tabor, age 87, died on Saturday December 6 at TBRH . Allen was the youngest of four boys. His father Walter died when Allen was an infant leaving his mother Esther to raise him, along with his older brothers Bill, Alec and Mac in Westfort. All have predeceased him. Allen attended local schools and joined the L.S R. in the summer of 1940 and was posted to the 102nd training school as a corporal. He was transferred to the L.S.R. in 1941. Allen served in Europe throughout World War II with the L.S.R. (Motor). When the war ended Allen continued to serve with the L.S.R. (LSSR), as paymaster and retired in 1975 with the rank of Major. In May of 1995 Allen received the honour of being chosen to represent Canada at ceremonies commemorating the liberation of Holland. Allen returned to school after the war and was trained as an accountant. He worked first with the Federal Income Tax Bureau and later at Abitibi Provincial, retiring after 35 years in the spring of 1986. As Cost Accounts Supervisor, his staff was fondly referred to as "Allen‘s Angels". Allen shared his talents and energy volunteering in the community. He served first as Treasurer, then as President of Mount McKay Ski Club and was on the board of directors for many years. In 1960 as Treasurer of the Mount McKay Ski Club he and fellow directors were instrumental in the funding and building of one of the first chairlifts in the area. He served on the board of the Lake Superior Ski Division and was the Treasurer of the Kidney Foundation. In later years he spent many volunteer hours helping at Kamview Nordic Center. The family and home Allen and Flora created together were central to his life. Although Allen and the family struggled with his progressing Alzheimer‘s disease, together they shared many good memories. Skiing was a huge part of family life. Later. Allen and Flora enjoyed many ski adventures in Canada, the US and Europe. The family also shared many summer camping and canoe trips and just being together. With the onset of dementia, Allen spent the last two years at the Dementia Care Unit of St. Joseph‘s Care Group, where despite his diminished mental state, his unfailing charm and gracious nature won over the staff. Allen will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife Flora and four children , Mary Jane (Richard Lewandowski), Allen (Mary), Catherine (George Pirie) and Robin (Gordon John), who have graced him with 11 grandchildren Sarah (Steve Pentick), Mathew (Laura). Lloyd, Elizabeth Ann (Betty) 2008-12-09 1934 - 2008 Elizabeth passed away peacefully at the age of 73 at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on December 6th, 2008 with family by her side. She was married to her beloved husband Clayton and raised 5 children together. Predeceased by her mother Mary Ball in 1996, husband Clayton in 1989, sister Sharon and brother Jack. Survived by her sisters Carol Bregg, Mryna Stubbings and families. She is also survived by her children Doug, John, Diane, Karen, Len and families, including her 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Many thanks goes out to all the nurses and doctors at the hospital and to the Dawson Court staff for the dedicated care of Elizabeth for the past 5 years.
