LIVES LIVED Lorne Warmen Mundle July 10, 1920 - Nov. 19, 2008 Lorne W. Mundle, son of George and Audrey Mundle (Beckingham) was born, attended high school, and lived his entire life in Campbellton, N.B. He was the youngest of five children and was predeceased by his brothers, John and Challie, sisters Margaret and Dorothy, his wife Hazel and his son Keith. Lorne and his wife Hazel (Brown) raised seven children; Keith, Wayne, Susan (Hamilton), Mollie (Arpin), Mike, Patricia (Parker) and Sandra (Purcell). In his younger days Lorne was an avid outdoors man, enjoying hunting, fishing and canoeing throughout Restigouche County. He was also a fine athlete, excelling in hockey, bowling and skiing. As a young man he worked as a cook's helper in the logging camps leaving this for temporary work on the spare board of Canadian National Railways. Struggling to support a young family, Lorne could not rely on temporary employment and his determination and strong work ethic shone through. With a strong entrepreneurial spirit he raised chickens on the vacant lot next to the family home. He delivered groceries for Butlands store, hauled and sold wood and eventually began a long career driving taxi. He was president of the Central Taxi Association when he decided to take over the lease of the White Rose Service Station on the adjacent property on Roseberry Street. This was the beginning of a long term commitment to the business of running a service station. Tiring of the demands of the lease holding oil companies, Lorne decided to erect his own building where Mundle's Service Station still stands on Ramsay Street. With the assistance of his son Mike, Lorne built one of the most successful service and towing businesses on the North Shore. There are few of his seven children or his 21 grand children who did not work at the service station. His family and many others helped to finance their education while working for Lorne. He spent many hours at the local arena watching his grandchildren progress through the minor hockey system and was always a strong supporter of the local Campbellton Tigers hockey team, following them across the country for championship games. He loved music playing the piano and the accordion. Family and friends enjoyed many a sing along around the Mundle campfire. Lorne and Hazel as a young married couple spent many months in the Regional sanitorium while recuperating from tuberculosis. It was during this time that he learned the art of making split bamboo fishing rods, and flytying. He produced some of the finest fishing rods and flies seen on the Restigouche River. He loved the river and in his early years built a small cottage in Tide Head so that his children could experience the life on the river. This cottage expanded as his family grew but was eventually lost in a fire. Many years later, at the age of 65 and with a little help, he built the present log cottage that overlooks the Restigouche above Tide Head Beach. In the late 1950's Lorne was one of the pioneers in the growing "fiddle head" business. He ferried dozens of pickers to the islands in Tide Head, purchased their harvest and processed tons of fiddle heads daily for regional distributors. It was Hazel who did her best to ensure their family's religious presence each Sunday, but Lorne was in many ways his brothers' keeper. Many a relative, young and old and some of the town's people who were down and out were recipients of his generosity. Many found themselves spending extended periods of time at the family home or the Mundle cottage. The word "retirement" was not in Lorne's vocabulary. It was only failing health at 84 years of age that slowed him down. Even then he made regular trips to the garage ensuring everything was in order. He was very fortunate to have most of his family living in the Campbellton area and some wonderful home care workers in his later years. Mina, Murray, Arlene, Sally, Doris and Alice must be thanked for helping Lorne live in the comfort of his family home as long as possible. Lorne cared for and ensured the same quality care for Hazel during her final days. Lorne passed away peacefully in the Campbellton Regional Hospital on November 19 and will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him. His funeral service was held from Christ Church, Campbellton on Nov. 22, 2008 officiated by Rev. A. Godsoe. Honorary pallbearers were Kerwin Wood, Wilson Hubbard, Maurice Parker, Leo Berthelot and Michael Soucy. Interment was in the Campbellton Rural Cemetery. ANDERSEN, Karlo June 13, 1930 - December 7, 2008 Karlo Andersen, 78, died peacefully with his family at his side in Calgary, on Sunday afternoon, December 7, 2008. Born June 13, 1930 on a small farm at Konradsminde near Ravnkilde, Denmark, Karlo came to Canada in 1957 with one suitcase, twenty dollars and just a few words of English, planning to make his fortune and return home. A road trip from Kingston to Vancouver stopped short in Calgary where he met his wife, Nan Maxwell of Dunfermline, Scotland, at a community dance. After studying at SAIT he worked for several years as a Journeyman carpenter. He built a house in Lakeview for his young family and opened Andersen Hardware in Mayland Heights. He returned to building and eventually realized his dream of establishing his own house-building company, Andmax Construction, through which he built many beautiful homes for appreciative families in Calgary and the surrounding area. He retired with Nan in High River, where he enjoyed many years as a member of the Highwood Golf and Country Club as well as many seasons of his own private road race: he could often be found, even into his early seventies, running his 10k along the Coal Trail towards Longview. Karlo is survived by his wife Nan, daughter Katheryn and son Martin of Calgary, and by his sisters Lissi and Greta and brother Peter and family in Denmark. From him we learned to imagine, to dream, to tell stories. We learned to be good natured and gentle with others, no matter how great or small. He taught us all love and humour and will be missed so much. OBITUARY DR. JAROSLAV HRUBY (a.k.a. JERRY J. HOLY) Montreal, Quebec, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 5, 2008 in Prague, Czech Republic following a brief illness. Born April 20, 1924 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Jerry fought with the Czech resistance movement against the Nazi occupation of his homeland and received many decorations and distinctions for his valour. He also fought against the rising tide of communism. After the communist takeover of the Czechoslovak government in February 1948, he risked his personal freedom to help people flee the country and to assist in the smuggling of documents and important information to foreign governments, including the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, out of the country. He was expelled from university, tortured and imprisoned. Managing to escape prison and the country of his birth, he made his way to Italy, where he was reunited with his future wife. Upon learning of his presence in Italy, he was invited to Rome and invested in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta by the Grand Master Proprio Mottu for his piety and service to the Order. After the fall of the Communist Government, he received his law degree from Charles University in Prague. He immigrated to Canada in 1950 where he founded Unilight Limited, a leading custom lighting manufacturing company producing decorative fixtures for customers in the hospitality industry around the world. Jerry took tremendous pride in his business and relished the many friends he made during the company's fifty-three year history. Well respected and admired by so many, he remained a constant source of inspiration and continued to work at Unilight into his eighty-fourth year. Passionate about the outdoors, Jerry enjoyed almost fifty years surrounded by the calm and natural beauty of Lake McDonald where he spent his time swimming, hiking, snow shoeing and endless hours watching the wildlife. Predeceased by his beloved wife Maria Renata Schmidt, Jerry is survived and will be greatly missed by his sons Thomas (and his partner Dominique L'Ecuyer), Michael (and his wife Frances, nee MacKay) and his only grandson, Matthew. He will also be missed by many close friends including his caregiver Rod MacKay, his extended family at Unilight and his many nieces and nephews in the Czech Republic. The family is extremely grateful for the support of the very dedicated doctors in Montreal and Prague, especially the exceptionally caring staff at St. Mary's Hospital in Montreal and Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo in Prague. His funeral will be held at the Church of St. Thomas in Prague - Mala Strana on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 12 p.m. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Ascension of Our Lord, 375 Kitchener Avenue, Westmount on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to The St. Mary's Hospital Centre Foundation or The Trans Canada Trail Foundation. Graduated from Mount Saint Vincent College, University of Montreal, and the University of Toronto (Master of Education), and lived in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa. Traveled, skied, golfed, had an eye for a bargain, and dressed with flair. WILLIS, Immanuelle Silk Immanuelle Silk Willis passed away Saturday December 6th, 2008. She was with us for three wonderful months. She leaves behind her family of her two older sisters, Jenny and MeghanRain, and her parents, Amy and Dan. Grandparents, Anna & Kevin Russell and Doug & Karen Willis, Great-Grandparents Barbara Willis & Al and Mary Russell, Gerry and Koos Vandersanden & Uncles and Aunts, Sarah, Dan, Rachel, Skylar and Emina will all miss this little angel and joy that she brought to them. Elle was a joyful little baby who brought all those who met her a great feeling of warmth and happiness. FLANAGAN, Peter John Patrick (Pat) October 23, 1924 - December 7, 2008 Pat passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 7, 2008 with his family at his side at the age of 84 years. Pat was born in Prince Albert, SK and raised in Melfort, SK. He attended the U of S in Saskatoon where he earned an engineering degree. He served in the air force, stationed in Watson Lake, BC and also worked for Ford and H.M. Trimble and Sons (Trimac) during his career. Pat married Beatrice Hattenburg in 1950 and they raised three sons, living in Regina, SK and Moose Jaw, SK until he was transferred to Calgary in 1964. Pat was a kind and gentle man who cared for his family. He will be remembered for the many camping and fishing trips with the family over the years. Pat leaves behind two sons, Patrick Jr. and Michael Timothy (Debbie); grandchildren, Cody and Lindsay (Will MacDonald); as well as great-granddaughter Hannah Flanagan-MacDonald. He is also survived by sisters, Maureen Flanagan and Colleen Gilliland (Bob); brother Herb Flanagan; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Margaret and Peter; wife Beatrice; son Kelly; and brother Terry. HANISCH, Hanni December 26, 1932 - December 8, 2008 December 8, 2008, a very much-loved mother, wife and oma, left this world to go on top of a mountain. Hanni emigrated from Germany in 1954, were she met the love of her life, Ernst Hanisch. They married in 1956, and were together for fifty-two years. Hanni was a wonderful mother to daughters, Ingrid and Julie, who loved her like crazy. She was also the best oma to Blake and Spencer Dunphy, Anna and Eric Macht, and mother-in-law to Paul Dunphy and Bob Macht whom she loved as her own sons. We all adored her. Hanni spent most of her life in Canada working as a seamstress. She was a perfectionist and her work was fabulous. She made all of her customers happy. Mom also loved to hike in the mountains and was happiest when in the mountains with Ernie. Even in her later years she could scamper to the top of a mountain faster than anyone and we always said she had mountain goat blood in her. Goodbye Mama, we love you and always will. We will never forget you and will hold you close in our hearts forever. No Funeral will be held, but mother's ashes will be sprinkled in the wind on top of a mountain. Connie was in her 78th year and will be sadly missed by all her family and friends. Connie was born in Maine, USA and lived many years in Montreal where she married Michael Finn and had four wonderful children Steven Finn (Kathy), Deborah Court (Terry), Sandy Dennis (Jody) and Derrick Hayes (Darlene). She was married to Michael for several years and after his sudden death she was married to Paul Hayes. They spent many wonderful years raising their family and were the best grandparents to Sean Finn (Stacey), Christopher Finn (Natalie), Lisa Baxter (Dan), Michelle Watt, Joanna Pirsa (Kristian), Rebecca Dennis, Stephanie Dennis, Tamara Vandewiel. After the passing of Paul Hayes she was truly blessed to be a great-great grandmother to Olivia Finn. She was the last surviving sibling. Connie had three sisters Norma Loughrin (Hugh), Rita McDowell (Tom), Dawn Robins (John); and her only brother Albert Meating (Vivian Roach). Connie happily spent her remaining 5 years with Gil Henderson where she enjoyed many wonderful days at Onondaga Farm. As an avid outdoor's man, this was like living in nature's paradise.He would count the days between hunting seasons going into fishing, filling his time and planning for the next hunting or fishing trip. He was an independent man with a real zest for life and laughter. Sitting around the kitchen table would always involve a story or telling of a past practical joke. John always had the gift of talking and planning for the next adventure. Aside from his hunting & fishing passion he also loved reading.
