PATTERSON, Robert “Bob“ - In loving memory of Robert “Bob“ Patterson 70 years, who passed away Saturday, November 8th, 2008 at his residence. Born in Collingwood December 6th, 1937. He married Patricia Currie in 1963. After a brief stay in Haileybury, they happily settled in Sudbury in 1968. Retired from Vale INCO, Bob was an avid golfer and long time member of the Lively Golf & Country Club (group of Mauri Lukkarila and Bill Kilby). An active member in the community, Bob was a lifelong supporter of the Canadian Blood Services and an elder of Calvin Presbyterian Church. The greatest joys of his life were his grandchildren and the times he spent with them. He will be sadly missed by his wife Patricia (Currie) Patterson and sons Frank (Donna) and Ed (Jennifer). Special Poppa to Marley, Calvin, Abbey and Cameron. Predeceased by his parents Robert and Allison Patterson. CHERWATY, Paul - Paul Cherwaty, 88, formerly of Walsh Station died at Leisure World in Brantford on Tuesday, November 11, 2008. Husband of the late Lela Cherwaty (nee Smith 1987). Dear father to Paula McConnachie of Simcoe, Shirley Roy and her husband Ronald of Timmins and Barb Everett and her husband Keith of Brantford. WINTER, Walter William James January 20, 1924 - November 10, 2008 Walter Winter, beloved Husband of Bernice of Calgary, passed away peacefully with his family at his side, at Chinook Care Centre Hospice on Monday, November 10, 2008 at the age of 84 years. Walter was born in Winnipeg, MB. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force, as a Wireless Operator at age seventeen. He started a new career in sales that took him to Regina, where he met his wife Bernice, had their four children and started his illustrious forty-year career with Domtar Chemicals / Sifto Salt. After eight years in Winnipeg, Walter was transferred with his family to Calgary in 1972. Walter had a passion for the Calgary Flames and spent much of his time gardening, reading, traveling and supporting his children's interests. Walter is lovingly remembered by his children; Karen McMullan, Ross (Kimberly) Winter, Craig Winter (Gerri), and Darrell Winter; grandchildren; Ryan, Kyle, Brendan, and Austen; brother Cec (Vicky) Winter; step-sister Sigrid (Bob) Brown; and numerous family, friends and loved ones. Walter is predeceased by his parents, Walter and Martha Winter; step-mother Lydia Winter; sister Lillian (Wally) Burns, and niece Cathy Lindsay. CHARTRAND,Leon Alfred "Papa Smurf" 2008-11-12 Mr. Leon Alfred "Papa Smurf" Chartrand, 72 years, of Lake Helen Reserve, Nipigon, Ontario passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 in the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital, Nipigon, Ontario with his family by his side. Leon served with the Canadian Army. He drove for Lakehead Freightways for a number of years and for Nip Rock Taxi. Leon was a huge Montreal Canadiens fan and was well known in the area for his blueberry picking abilities. Predeceased by his parents - Loretta and Joseph Chartrand and by a step-daughter Jennifer Potan; he is survived by his wife Irene Chartrand of Lake Helen Reserve, by two step-sons - Michael Potan (& Gloria Black) of Lake Helen Reserve and Aaron Potan (& Elizabeth Simmons) of Thunder Bay, Ontario, by six grandchildren - Mykel, Mason, D’Arcy, Jared, Chase and Maddox and by four siblings. Ms. Carol Ann Koch March 8, 1954 - August 15, 2008 On August 15, 2008, our cherished Carol Ann passed away at the age of 54 years, after a courageous struggle with cancer. The youngest of three girls, Carol Ann was born and raised in Edmonton. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Mount Zion Lutheran Church and after high school Carol Ann attended Lutheran Collegial Bible Institute in Outlook, Saskatchewan. From early on she loved the mountains and worked for a number of years in jobs in Jasper, Banff, Lake Louise and Waterton. She moved to Red Deer to attend Red Deer College and graduated with a Legal Assistant Diploma. This led to a lengthy career of service in the legal system, first serving as a telecommunications operator for the RCMP, and as a judicial clerk for the courts in Red Deer. She returned to Edmonton to work as a legal assistant for Justice Canada, now the Public Prosecution Service of Canada. She committed much of herself to her work and for the last 3 years was a valued and trusted member of the Drug Treatment Court project team. Carol Ann consistently received recognition for her excellent performance as a dedicated colleague. Carol Ann was known for her kindness, thoughtfulness, generosity of spirit to those less fortunate, and her ability to form strong friendships wherever she went. She was a loving sister and daughter and being together with her family was an important part of her life. She enjoyed her home and flower garden. Carol Ann’s quiet, strong faith carried her through many difficult times. Sadly, Carol Ann passed away four short weeks after she learned that her breast cancer of four years ago had returned. Carol Ann was planning for her retirement on her birthday in 2009. She is lovingly remembered by her mother, Hattie Koch; her sisters, Sharon Dobson and Judy Koch; her brother-in-law, Neil Dobson; and her aunt, uncle, many cousins, friends and colleagues. She was predeceased by her father Ewald Edward Koch. Thank you to the staff of the Cross Cancer Institute and Capital Care Norwood for their care and support. GILLIS, Florence Margaret (nee Winn) 1921 - 2008 Florence went to be with her Lord on November 10, 2008 at home, surrounded by family, as she wished, after a valiant battle with cancer. Mom had a deep commitment to her siblings and their families. Most of her nieces and nephews lived with Auntie Florence at some point in their lives. A total of thirty-nine young people - not all family - were taken in and cared for by Mom. She spent twenty years as a volunteer with the Calgary General and Peter Lougheed Hospitals, after working for twenty-nine and a half years in the General Hospital laundry. Mom gave generously to the homeless and made sure that anyone she heard was hungry was fed. She would deliver an anonymous order of groceries to their doorstep. She also regularly paid her tithe, although not necessarily to a church. She donated the funds where she felt led to support, even though it did not necessarily result in a tax deduction. She attended the First Church of the Nazarene and Grace Baptist until she was unable to drive in her later years. Mom was known for her sense of humor and sharp wit. Halloween was a favourite time of year that she enjoyed as much as any kid. She loved to dress up and pull pranks on her friends and neighbors. She loved fun and games and added laughter to any family gathering (often from her "cheating"). Mom was very proud that her girls followed in her footsteps and now care for people in the community. She is a very hard act to follow. We would like to express our deep appreciation to all of Mom's neighbors, the Palliative Care Team, Dr. B. Liggett, and the Calgary Health Region for all of their care and support through this last difficult time. Florence is survived by her daughters and their families, Cathy Kennedy, Sharon Goerlitz and Teresa Fehr, all of Calgary; her grandchildren, Gaylene, Don and Greg Kennedy, Tracy Gillis, Ken and Troy Goerlitz (Tara-Lee), Travis and Tanis Fehr; great-grandchildren, Kyle Thompson Kennedy, Breanna Kennedy, Landyn Fehr and Mackenzie Goerlitz; her sisters, Violet Elson of Brampton, Ont., Laura Kelly of Calgary; sister-in-law Audrey Thulien (Bud) of Veteran, AB and many nieces and nephews. Bernam Morrell 1948-2008 of California Settlement passed away at the Edmundston Regional Hospital on October 15, 2008. Born in Aroostook on January 3, 1948, he was the son of the late Miles and Ella (Plant) Morrell. Bernam leaves behind his wife Avis Morrell (Everett); his children Diana Morrell (Robbie Lockhart) of Fort McMurray, AB, Sandra Grant (Shawn) of Four Falls, Wyatt Morrell (Tammy) of Woodstock; his sister Phyllis McLaughlin (Arthur) of Limestone Siding; his brothers Wendall Morrell (Geraldine) of Medford, Victor Morrell (June Bowmaster) of Perth-Andover; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, and brothers John, and Merton, Hubert and Lorne Morrell. Bernam worked for the NB Department of Transportation. CHRISTIE, Michael Ronald, “Ron” 2008-11-12 Michael Ronald, “Ron” of Thunder Bay, Ontario, passed away suddenly Sunday, November 9th at Hamilton General Hospital. Born May 18th, 1942 in Fort William, Ron served in the Royal Canadian Navy (1959-1964) before attending George Brown College and returning to Fort William to start a family. They moved to Red Rock where Ron worked with Domtar Paper Mill before settling down in Thunder Bay, where he worked with Bowater as a Machinist until his retirement. The “Bossman” loved spending time with family and friends, gardening, traveling and meeting new people. Ron was loved for his big heart and unique sense of humor. He was predeceased by his father Michael, mother Virginia “Reggie”, brother Alan, aunts Olga and Stella, mother and father-in-law Nell & Bill Silver and trusted companion Tupper. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 42 years Eileen, children Steve, Michelle (beloved granddaughter Dale Murray), Colin (Seoul, S. Korea), Sean (Kyla Radomsky) (Edmonton, AB), brother Donald and wife Helen, cousins Joan Harding and sons Kirk & Chris (Oakville, ON) and Pat Henderson (Sandy and children Kristi & Jonathan). He will be especially missed by his best friend Lorne Horbacio. Mrs. Sebrina Marie McCloy March 18, 1982 - August 15, 2008 It is with extreme sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our wife, mother, daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece and friend. Sebrina was born March 18th, 1982 in Maidstone, SK and passed away on August 15th, 2008 at the age of 26 at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert. After graduating high school in Birch Hills in 2000, she moved to the McCloy farm in Colleston where she resided until her death. On October 6th 2001, Sebrina married the love of her life, Ben McCloy and together they have 3 beautiful children Austin (age 7), Dawn-Marie (age 4) and Samuel (age 2). Her family was her life’s purpose. Her greatest joys came from making all the events and everyday activities into wonderful memories for her children. Her love of photography and scrapbooking, combined with her creativity will leave a legacy of love for Ben and her children. In the spring of this year, Sebrina began her studies towards a nursing degree and planned to be done her schooling by the time Sam started school. She planned to specialize in pediatrics. Even though she was busy as a stay-at-home mom, she was the hub of our family who managed to keep us all organized and on track. Her interests beyond her family included: photography, scrapbooking, sewing, crocheting, knitting, cooking, finding incredible deals on Ebay, and keeping up with her friends on Facebook and by telephone. Sebrina leaves to mourn her passing, her husband Ben; children Austin, Dawn-Marie and Samuel; her parents Jan & Stan Bliss, her sister Amanda (Lorne) Crane; her brother Brendan (Jenna Stubbs); her grandparents Bill and Agnes Crawford, grandma Vera Bliss; her parents at home, Jim and Sherri McCloy as well as siblings Kristin (Tim) Alcock, Ryan (Rebecca Chunys); her nieces and nephew Amber, Shaelin and Ethan Alcock; grandma Bunnie McCloy, grandparents Shirley and Peter Dyck. REID, Angie (Angeleen Deborah) Tragically passed away Saturday, November 8, 2008 at the age of 28. Born at Ottawa, Ontario, March 24, 1980, she is predeceased by her father Kirk (Reid) and her grandfather Ronald (Munro). She will be forever missed by her grandmother Joyce (Munro), her mother Deborah (Bastians) and her sister Patricia (Joanisse). Our hearts go out to all those whose lives she touched; we know she will be fondly remembered. A private service will be held next week. BEATRICE MARIE ‘BEA’ OLINYK By editorial Wednesday, 12 November 2008 - 3:08pm. Obituaries Beatrice Marie “Bea” Olinyk, 91, of 102 First St., Rainy River, Ont., passed away Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 at the Rainy River Health Centre in Rainy River. She was born June 6, 1917 in Spohn Township, Ont. to the late James and Mabel Hawthorne. Bea spent her early years growing up at home in Spohn Township. She later met and married Michael Olinyk on May 1, 1947. Bea lived all of her life in Northern Ontario. She left Rainy River in 1952 and settled in Atikokan, later moving to Sudbury and Thunder Bay, until she and Mike moved back to retire in Rainy River in 1972, where they remained until her passing. While in Thunder Bay, Bea worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Port Arthur for many years until illness forced her to retire. She was very active and a life member of both the Moose Lodge and the Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary. Her involvement in the auxiliary carried on in Rainy River. She also was a member of the C.W.L. and the Rainy River Activity Depot. In recent years, Bea was known as an avid card player and enjoyed her many times with friends and card partners at the card games at the Rainy River Activity Depot and in Baudette, Mn., and on Saturday at the Legion. She was predeceased by her husband, Mike, in 2000; son-in-law, Gary Graham, in 1997; daughter, Nellie, at birth; brothers, Ken and Elmer Hawthorne; six brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; and one niece and three nephews. Left surviving are her daughter, Diane Graham of Fort Frances, Ont.; son, Terry Olinyk of Thunder Bay, Ont.; grandsons, Mike and Greg Graham of Fort Frances, Ont., and Andy Olinyk of Regina, Sask.; sister, Pearl (Ken) Mason of Rainy River, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Margaret Hawthorne, Mary Marmus, and Blanche Bernier, all of Rainy River, Ont., and Nellie Shybyski of Fort Frances, Ont.; brother-in-law, Clarence (Bernice) Olinyk of Rainy River, Ont.; very dear friends, Phil (Chipper) and Evelyn Bourre; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Rainy River. Fr. Dan Debano will officiate, with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River. Henri Houde 1919 - 2008 À l'hôpital de l'Enfant-Jésus, Québec, le 6 novembre 2008, à l'âge de 88 ans 11 mois, est décédé monsieur Henri Houde, époux de dame Georgette Parent. Né à Saint-Lucien de Drummond, le 6 décembre 1919, monsieur était le fils de feu dame Julia Proulx et de feu monsieur Arthur Houde. Clarence Richards September 18, 1912 - August 15, 2008 Richards, Clarence Arthur RICHARDS, CLARENCE Arthur, FCA, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2008 at the age of 95 years. He is survived by his three daughters, Barbara Henson (Brian) and Broda Stuart (Michael) of Calgary, and Brenda Langridge of Vulcan, Alberta, six grandchildren, Richard Henson (Anna Sassie), Christy Henson, Stephanie Lefebvre (Brent), Ryan Stuart (Josie Boulding), Derek Stuart (Jenn Wertzler), and Clark Langridge, and three great grandchildren, Paige Stuart, Emma Lefebvre, and Sterling Stuart. In 2005 he lost Agnes, his dear wife of 62 years. He was predeceased by his father Arthur in 1941, his mother Hilda in 1967, his brother Eric in 1961, his brother Harold in 1988, and his son-in-law, Robert Langridge in 2007. Clarence was the eldest of three sons born to Arthur and Hilda Brooks Richards who had emigrated from England in the early 1900s. He was born in Calgary on September 18, 1912, the same month as first Calgary Stampede. He grew up in Victoria Park, part of the huge extended Brooks family with dozens of cousins. Although he attended Normal School and trained as a teacher, it was his aptitude for mathematics that lead him into a life-long career in business. He became a Chartered Accountant, served on the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, and was President of the Institute in 1956. In recognition of his successful long-time career and many contributions to the profession, he was made a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants in 1959, and was honoured for 60 years of membership in 2002. He retired from his accounting practice at the age of 76 and closed his office at the age of 93. In 1942 he married Agnes Christina Clark. They had a wonderful relationship and a long and happy marriage. They were a perfect compliment to one another. They travelled the world together, danced beautifully together, entertained graciously together, and lived harmoniously together in their own home for over 62 years. In Agnes’s final years Clarence became her devoted caregiver. Music was an important part of Clarence’s life. He was a formally trained musician who could also play by ear. He played the piano, organ, accordion and electronic keyboard. With these talents and a fine singing voice, you could always find him at the heart of a sing along. Over the years his music brought enjoyment to many, including guests of the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies. Clarence was active in the Chanters Unit (choir) of the Shrine (AAO NMS), was a member of the Scottish Rite (A and ASR) since 1956, and a life member of Ashler Lodge #28. He was Honorary Secretary of the Board of Governors of the Calgary Petroleum Club for 50 years. He was an excellent public speaker who could always be counted on to take the floor and make a few appropriate remarks. He had a gift for learning poetry, usually entertaining tales full of humour and puns, that he would recite flawlessly whenever an audience presented itself. Clarence faithfully attended Grace Presbyterian Church for 65 years and was a member of the Session of Grace Church since 1968. Prior to Remembrance Day 2007 he lived independently in his Elbow Park home and drove his own car. Since then he has been under medical care, most recently at Bethany Care Centre. On August 15, 2008 he was set free from the limitation of this life to be reunited with Agnes in a much happier place. The family extends their sincere thanks to the staff at Bethany Care Centre for the kind and respectful care provided to their father, grandfather, and great grandfather. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 1:30 pm at Leyden’s Chapel of Remembrance (corner of 17th Avenue & 2nd Street SW) with Rev. Victor Kim officiating.
