PFC: DANIEL STECKLER 110th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division United States Army Born in Brooklyn, NY on February 26, 1925 Son of Sadye and Max Steckler Passed away on October 4, 2004, Framingham, MA. Captured during the Battle of the Bulge in Luxembourg, December 16, 1944. Sent to Stalag 1X-B. Under German orders, Danny, other Jewish P.O.W.'s and those suspected of being Jewish were segregated from their Division and transferred to Berga/Elster slave labor camp, where they were beaten and starved. Liberated by American troops on April 21, 1945. Weight on liberation day: 82 lbs. Never compensated for his slave labor by the Germans. Quoted extensively in "Forgotten victims - The Abandonment of Americans in Hitler's Camps" and "Soldiers and Slaves - American P.O.W.'s trapped by the Nazis Final Gamble" and featured in P.B.S. documentary "American P.O.W.'s in W.W.II, Korea and Vietnam." OBITUARY JAMES WING (NG WING WAH) 1912 - 2008 Departed to his eternal rest with the Lord on November 9, 2008 in Montreal. Predeceased 27 years earlier by his first wife Guim Shong Lee, 5 hours earlier by his wife in second marriage, Imelda Morin and by his son Gok Gee. He will be mourned by his children Fa Shao (Teng Wu Yun), Su Yue (Bai Jun Yi), and Simon (Mary Diovisalvi) and by his grandchildren Hui Fong, Hui Qing, Hui Hong, Yan Hong, Xiao Qi, Sara Lina, and Emily and four great-grandchildren. Born in Toy Sun, China, he arrived in Canada in 1923 at the age of 11 and paid the Head Tax. To provide the best future for his children, he struggled hard to achieve a college education. Active in the Chinese community, he served as an elder in the Montreal Chinese Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, president of the Ng clan association and worked in the movement to redress the Head Tax, sharing his story to the community and government and in the documentary films Moving the Mountain (by William Dere and Malcolm Guy) and In the Shadow of Gold Mountain (by Karen Cho, National Film Board). CUMINGS, Ferne Madge 1913 - 2008 Ferne Madge Cumings passed away on November 9, 2008 at the Hillcrest Extendicare Nursing Home in Calgary. She was born March 10, 1913 in Delta, Utah to John R. Heppler and Emily Adelia Jacob who resided in Magrath, Alberta where Fern grew up and received all of her schooling except for a business course in Lethbridge, Alberta. Upon completion of this course she was employed as a stenographer in that city until she met and married Hector Roderick MacKenzie in December 1937. The newly married couple took up residence in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where a son Roderick Hector was born August 10, 1941 and who predeceased his mother March 25, 2000. Due to an employment transfer the MacKenzies moved to Calgary in 1948 and in 1957 her husband Hector predeceased her. In 1962 she married Wilfred D. Cumings who also predeceased her in 1987. Ferne was also predeceased by three natural sisters Zona Snowdon, Zella Gygie and Thelma Stanne; four stepsisters Edna Brown, Bell Lybebert, Nora Tiller and Bernice Baines; three stepbrothers Wilford, Vede and Brant Benion as well as a half-brother Lloyd Heppler. Surviving are three grandchildren Roderick Keith MacKenzie, Scott Muir MacKenzie (Sarah) and Katherine Anne Britton (Ahren), their mother Linda Simmons and one great-granddaughter Mackenzie Shea Britton. Funeral Services will be held at the 17 Avenue Stake Centre of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2021 - 17 Avenue S.W., Calgary on Monday, December 1, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Bishop Daryl L. Frank. A reception will follow prior to Interment at Queen's Park Cemetery. QUINN, Lorette (nee Gallant) The death occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital Sunday, November 2, 2008, of Lorette (Gallant) Quinn of Renforth, New Brunswick, wife of the late Harold Quinn. She was born in Oyster Bed Bridge, P.E.I., on August 2, 1918, to the late Vital and Angelina Gallant. Left to mourn are her loving family and friends including her five sisters: Melina, Rita, Yvonne, Eleanor and Zeta, and one brother, Eugene. She was predeceased by two brothers, Allan and Louis. Lorette was laid to rest in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Saint John, N.B., on Wednesday, November 5.

TAYLOR, Coline Anne November 12, 1947-November 10, 2008 Sydney Mines/Inverness We regret to announce the passing of Coline Anne Taylor, 60, on November 10, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Inverness, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Kate (MacIsaac) Young. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Sydney Mines. Coline was a graduate of the Normal Teacher’s College and taught in Inverness and Lower Sackville. She chose to take time to raise her three children before returning to the school system as a teacher’s assistant and finally retiring two years ago due to ill health. She is survived by her loving husband, Raymond Taylor; sons, David (Lisa), Charlottetown, P.E.I.; Peter (Angie), Westville; daughter, Krista (Mike), Sydney Mines; grandchildren, Logan, Stuart and Hailey; and her god-child, Suzanne Taylor, Florence. She is also survived by her sister, Grace MacDonald, Inverness; mother-in-law, Rachel Taylor; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. She was predeceased by her father-in-law, John R. Taylor, and brother-in-law, John R. Taylor Jr. Visitation for Coline Taylor will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 9-11 a.m. The funeral mass to celebrate her life will take place on Thursday at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Convent Street, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Saverio came to Canada in 1963. He worked mostly as a carpenter for The Coast Guard. Sam was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman. DRYBURGH, James (Jim) June 1, 1928, passed peacefully November 7, 2008. Survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruth, who nursed him to the end. Beloved sister Mary (Colin) Nicholls, sons, Rob (Melody), Ron (Laura), Rick, Ken. Grandchildren, Angela, Kevin, Jennifer, Douglas, Diana, Elizabeth. "I had a good life ". Jim was a native Victorian who grew up on Simcoe Street in James Bay and attended South Park school. From his earliest days Jim's life was to revolve around the ocean. As a boy, he dreamed he might someday own a boat. Jim often spoke of the many happy days he spent fishing on his Grandpa's fish boat and his time in the Sea Cadets. As a young man he began building boats at home in his basement. Later he apprenticed at Vogler Brothers Seacraft, and worked at Mackay Cormack, and Yarrows. He was well known in Victoria for the clinker sea skiffs he crafted at his first business, D&L Boat Works. In 1964 he opened Oak Bay Boat Works, which he ran for thirty years with the boys. It was here Jim built the 34' Three Martlets, which he enjoyed fishing, cruising, and just "puttering around " on. Not a day went by when Jim didn't talk about boats, whether reminiscing about past customers and employees, or reporting on the latest fish he caught on the flats, with Ruth. (She usually hooked the big one). We wish to thank the doctors and staff at hospice who cared for Jim in his final days. AGNEW, James Albert - In his 93rd year at his home in North Saanich, B.C. with his loving wife Laurette (nee Laplante) with him. Jim was the son of Robert John and Margaret Agnew. Jim grew up in Sault Ste. Marie. He is survived by his sisters Jean Higgins (late Alan), Mary Williams (late Howard) and Miriam Buchanan. He was predeceased by Charlie (late Jennie), Ken, Florence Darou (late Earl) and Don (Doris). Jim grew up in Sault Ste. Marie and after graduating in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto, he pursued his interest in telecommunications working for Bell Telephone in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. He returned to the Soo to supervise the changeover from switchboard to dial phones. Cremation has taken place. Raylene was predeceased by her beloved dad, Dennis, in 1986. Raylene was born on December 4, 1941, in Calgary, and was the only child of Dennis and Bess MacFarlane. She married her husband and best friend of forty-five years, Ray, on October 11, 1963, in Toronto where they lived for nearly two years before returning to Calgary. Raylene is survived by her beloved husband Ray, her dearest daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Tim Wagler, and her dear son Allan Northcott; her precious grandsons, Michael, Scott and Daniel Wagler and Liam Dunn-Northcott; her loving mother Bess MacFarlane; her cherished cousins Sandi and Ron Gerlitz; her special and oldest friend Joyce Loos, and many other family members and friends. BRISSON (M. Léopold) Le 9 novembre 2008, est décédé au Centre de santé et de services sociaux de Chicoutimi Pavillon St-Vallier, à l'âge de 81 ans et 6 mois, M. Léopold Brisson, époux de feu dame Jeanne-d'Arc Barbeau, demeurant à La Baie. La famille accueillera les parents et amis à compter de 10 h, le mercredi 12 novembre 2008 à la résidence funéraire Gravel & Fils, Réseau Dignité 873, de la Fabrique Ville de La Baie Les heures d'accueil sont: le mercredi de 10 h à 14 h. Les funérailles auront lieu le mercredi 12 novembre 2008 à 14 h à l'église St-Alphonse de La Baie. L'inhumation aura lieu au cimetière communautaire. Il était le fils de feu M. Grégoire Brisson et de feu dame Hermeline Maltais.
