GHETTI, John Joseph B.S.A., Professional Agrologist Dist. and recipient of the Order of Niagara - Born on May 29, 1928 in Copper Cliff, Ontario, died in the home he built on Thursday October 15, 2008 after a short struggle with Lung Cancer. Cherished and devoted husband of Gloria (nee Scott) for 51 years. Proud father to John (Allyson) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and daughter Donna Sattin (Tim) of Milton. Loving grandfather of Joshua, Scott and Julianna. He is survived by four nieces. He was predeceased by his parents Augusto and Maria Ghetti and by his brother Telvido. John was employed by Bright's Wines for 38 years as Viticulture Manager. John's life was devoted to family, church and community. John was a Past-President of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists and a director of the Agricultural Institute of Canada. He was honoured to have been chosen Citizen of the Year of Niagara-on- the-Lake in 1971. Community was important to John and he can be remembered as a Chairman of Parks and Recreation, of the Building of Centennial Arena and with the Committee of Adjustment for many years. John was a Past-President of the Canadian Cancer Society as well as a volunteer for Heart & Stroke Foundation. John was an inductee of the Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. He was a long-time member and Past- President of the St. Davids and District Lions Club and was chosen as a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award. John will be fondly remembered by his church family as well and they will miss him as the long-time Rector's Warden of St. Saviour's Anglican Church, Queenston. Following cremation, John's family will receive friends at the MORSE & SON CHAPEL OF THE MORGAN FUNERAL HOMES, 5917 Main Street, Niagara Falls on Saturday October 18th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A service under the auspices to the St. Davids Lions Club will be held at the funeral home on Saturday evening at 7 o'clock. BIRDSELL, Doreen Lily - Passed away peacefully, at the John Noble Home on Wednesday, October 15, 2008. Doreen L (nee Radford) Birdsell, in her 94th year, was the beloved wife of the late William F. Birdsell (November 4, 1991). Born near Burford, the daughter of Alice Brooks and Charles Dayton Radford. Her and her husband farmed near Burford for many years before moving to Paris in 1969. She was predeceased by a brother and three sisters. She was the dear mother of the late Marian Farrington (October 20, 2003). Doreen is survived by two sons, Ernest and his wife Maureen of Harrowsmith, Bill and his wife Jan of Guelph, her son-in-law James Farrington of Princeton and her daughter-in-law Sophie Birdsell of Brantford, eight grandchildren, seventeen great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Doreen was a strong woman who gave fully of her love and all of her resources to her family, her friends and her community. Family was very important to her and she wrote and kept in contact with relatives across North America and she shared the stories of events and achievements of her children and grandchildren with all her friends. JOHNSON, Kevin Joseph - Age 70, passed away peacefully in Lagoon City, with his wife Diana (nee Verrian) of forty-one years at his side, on Sunday October 12, 2008, after a valiant battle with lung cancer. The family is very grateful that Diana provided the around the clock medical care as he wished to remain in the comfort of his own home. Although a huge loss for his family, we are relieved that his suffering has ended. He will be greatly missed by his children Cliff, Nick (Anne Stewart), Jeff and Karen (Paul Sweeney). It is a loss that we will feel for a lifetime. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Suzy, Jake, John, Kayla and Daniel. The kids got a glimpse of how versatile Grandad was. His sister, Maureen from England visited in early summer which cheered him up while he battled pneumonia. Kevin was one of a kind, with an extraordinary intelligence, a man of few words, with many complex interests. He excelled in business and technology. Kevin was always a few steps ahead of his time. He came to Canada at age 19 from England with a borrowed suitcase, and $100 to his name. His entrepreneurial spirit founded, and successfully operated, MOMENTUM (A Division of Kevin Johnson Ltd.) in Newmarket since 1974. Our father was a very humble man, and was content with the bare essentials of life. He understood and valued life in Canada where we have the privilege of democracy, freedom and free speech. At a young age, he had experienced bombing raids during World War II in England and learned waste not, want not. He believed in helping others in need, and has generously donated from his estate to the registered charities DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS CANADA and THE LEPROSY RELIEF FUND OF CANADA. As per our father's wishes, there will be no funeral, but the family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date. His wishes were to donate his body to science to the University of Toronto to assist medical students in training and disease research. In our father's words, “I did it my way.“ THE END. BEGGS, John Robert "Jack" Group Captain, Royal Canadian Air Force (Ret) & Canadian Customs (Ret). Peacefully on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at the London Health Sciences Centre-Victoria Hospital, at the age of 92. He leaves behind his eldest son John (Nicole) of Ottawa. Also left are nieces in Winnipeg, and "the clan" nieces and nephews in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Jack was predeceased by his wife Mildred (2004) and his youngest son Robert (1978). Thanks to the management and staff of In Spirit Residences for giving him a welcoming home for the past 4 years. Special thanks to the surgical staff and nursing staff at the Critical Care Trauma Centre at the Victoria Hospital. We especially appreciate the care and compassion of Dr. Rob Humphrey and his surgical team and nurse Kathleen. Survived by her children Joanna (Kevin Drury), Emily (Douglas Liot) and Clement (Marie-Lyne Bourassa) and her grandchildren Alex, Paul, Christopher, Emily, Clemens-Philippe, Andrea and Claudia. She leaves behind relatives in Holland and Canada and many friends. She touched the hearts of all who knew her with her sense of humour and positive outlook. McEWEN, Eleanor Radley. Passed away at her home in Erin, Ontario, surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, October 15, 2008. Eleanor Radley (Snow) McEwen in her seventy-fifth year, was the beloved wife of Murray McEwen. She was the proud and loving mother of Andrew and his wife Kim, Douglas and his wife Ping, William (Bill) and his wife Andree. Eleanor was the proud grandmother of Tyler, Adam, and Brandon. She was the dear sister of Lorna Snow and her husband Ernest Spiller. Eleanor was the daughter of the late Edward and Edith Snow of Montreal. Eleanor was a classical pianist, artist of landscapes, builder, decorator, adventurer, teacher and animal lover. Her passion for life will be missed by her family and by her wide community of friends. Cremation and a private family service was held on Friday, October 17, 2008. A Celebration of Eleanor's Life will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Wilma Cade officiating at the Melville United Church, 300 St. Andrews St. West, Fergus, ON. ASHDOWN, Margaret Annie Margaret Ashdown, born May 4, 1913, passed away peacefully in Calgary on October 10, 2008 at the age of 95 years. She is survived by her daughter Ruby (Mervin) Ratz of Barrhead; son-in-law Erwin (Ursula) Poettcker of Genelle, B.C.; grandchildren Steven Poettcker, Duane (Tami) Poettcker, Wade Poettcker, Myrna (Jeff) Knoll, Marilyn (Brad) Gehring and great-grandchildren Jessica, Joshua, Karissa, Sydney, Scott, Jenny and Joelly. She is also survived by her stepdaughters Irene (Neil) McKellar of Sylvan Lake, Vi (Vic) Harbridge of Calgary; grandsons Scott (Wendy) McKellar, Stuart (Ilse) McKellar, Tim (Janet) Harbridge, Cameron Harbridge and their families. She was predeceased by her twin brother Fred; brother Everett; sister Ruby; first husband Roy R. Stokes; daughters Elsie Stokes and Leta Poettcker; second husband Rev. C. Gordon Ashdown and great-grandson Tyler Gehring. Margaret grew up in Calgary, farmed near Chestermere Lake, and retired in Calgary. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Calgary. June was born on September 6, 1932 in Brandon, MB. She married John Hastie on July 3, 1952 and resided in Winnipeg, later coming to Calgary. KOLTES, Alfons February 13, 1924 - October 16, 2008 Alfons Koltes, beloved husband, father, opa and friend to many, passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving family at the Foothills Medical Centre on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at the age of 84 years. Alfons was born in Trier, Germany and moved to Calgary in 1950. He met Emma (nee Hopfner) and they married in 1956. Alfons started out as a carpenter and eventually started his own house building company, Koltes Construction Ltd. and will be remembered as a well respected home builder. Alfons enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the cabin at Pine Lake and spending time with family and friends. Besides his wife Emma, Alfons is survived by two sons, Rene (Rhonda), Victor (Diane); daughter, Rose; three grandchildren, Matthew, Peter and Allana. Alfons is also survived by many relatives in Calgary and Germany. Predeceased by brother Jack Harding (1990, Windsor). Mrs. Peach was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1923 to Wilfred and Margery Harding. An active member of the Anglican Church - All Saints, Windsor (to 1947), St. Martin's Church, Calgary (1953 to 1964), St. John's, Windsor (1964 to 1974), and St. Luke's Anglican Church since 1974, and for over twenty-five years served as a volunteer at University Hospital. SWANSON, Cecil John Cecil John Swanson passed away at the Agape Manor Hospice on October 16, 2008 at the age of 84 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his nieces, Sonja (Calvin) King, Sheila (Tony) Kraft and Karla (John) Gordon and his sisters, Rose Batke and Cecile (Jim) Carroll as well as numerous other family members. He is predeceased by his loving wife Josephine in 2006, his father and his two brothers. Cecil was born on June 12, 1924 in Nevis, Alberta. Cecil's train career began at a young age, leading into a life-long love of trains. His nickname on the railway was "Swanny" and spent over fifty years riding the rails. Cecil and his wife Josephine married in Edmonton on January 9, 1960. After retiring from the railroad as a train dispatcher, they later moved to Calgary. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Agape Manor Hospice for the wonderful care and compassion that they gave Cecil and his family.
