MILLER, Elizabeth Mary Kathleen (Nee O'Connell) - Peacefully at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Sunday, October 5, 2008, in her 93rd year. Wife of the late Robert (“Red”) Miller. Loving mother of Patrick (Sharon Thorne), Ian (Mary Chambers) and Robert. Dear grandmother of Robert and Christy, Kate and Daniel. Dear great grandmother of Alexis Elizabeth. Dear sister of Patricia Piercy. Pre-deceased by her parents, John O'Connell and Helena Warburton. Elizabeth was always proud of the fact that she was a great granddaughter of Daniel O'Connell, known in the 19th Century Ireland as “The Liberator”, and revered there to this day. Elizabeth lived in London throughout WW II, where she endured the bombing raids of the “Blitz”, and the privations and dangers of wartime Britain. She married a Canadian airman, Robert “Red” Miller (RCAF), in London, in 1943. After the war, like so many “war brides”, she left England. Accompanied only by her new baby (Patrick), she joined her husband in Canada. They settled in post- war Toronto, where they raised their family of three sons, Patrick, Ian and Robert. Elizabeth best loved her summers spent at the family's property on the Ottawa River, an Old Hudson's Bay Company post known as Old Fort William. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed, by all who knew her there. Private family arrangements. FALCK, Isobel "Muriel" January 23, 1916 - October 7, 2008 Muriel Falck of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at the age of 92 years. Muriel is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Anita Falck; two granddaughters, Melinda and her husband Kevin Lawryk and Janine Falck and her partner Mike Daniluk; and two great-granddaughters, Rachel and Allison Lawryk. She is also survived by a sister Irene Ward of England; two nephews, Paul and Christopher; four nieces, Brenda, Maureen, Diane, and Valerie; and their families. MacINNIS, Emma Louis You won't see her wandering around Chapters or Home Depot any more, but her family and friends can attend her funeral service on Saturday, October 11th (time incomplete) at Sydenham Street United Church (82 Sydenham Street) with a reception to follow at JAMES REID FUNERAL HOME (1900 John Counter Blvd). Emma was born in England on November 4, 1969. Being a rather spirited child (brat) her parents were heard to say “Never again!” which made her a spoiled only child who was, and still is adored by her parents Pat and John Regan of Birchwood, England. Growing up Emma was a skinny kid who always sported grazed knees and grubby hands. She climbed trees, threw rocks, trekked through mud and generally got into trouble at every opportunity. She began perfecting mediocrity at Culcheth High School where she graduated (barely) before running off and joining the British Army - thankfully the circus wasn't in town that week. Emma loved a pint of Guinness, port and English cheese, and considered dark chocolate a meal in itself. She thought of herself as a bit of a handy-woman and spent lots of time tinkering with discarded tools and leaving half done “projects” all over the house. She mainly just wanted to wear the tool belt and smell sawdust. Emma was secretly addicted to the Food Network and HGTV. She had no sense of rhythm and danced like a rag doll in a windstorm. Emma knew practically every word of every Melissa Etheridge song ever written and sang them all loudly and very badly. She got teary-eyed at Hallmark commercials and with her mother could have won a gold medal if crying was an Olympic event. She shared a dry and inappropriate sense of humour with her father and her spouse, Sarah MacInnis. Emma laughed nearly every day, usually at herself, her wife's hilarious stories or the antics of their three year old son, Jack. Emma was a notorious and accomplished quitter. She could quit something before most people were aware she had started it. After taking lessons in several musical instruments including the saxophone, guitar, piano, and violin she would reach the dizzying musical heights of knowing “Twinkle, twinkle little star” before quitting. The same thing for gym memberships and various sports. Emma never peed in the shower, never drank straight from the juice carton, always flossed her teeth. . . well OK, but she never loved her family with less than all of her heart. Emma was blessed in her life. She was one of the very few lucky ones who met and married true love. When her beloved wife Sarah walked into a room Emma's heart always jumped and beat a little faster, she couldn't hide her love or the idiotic grin that spilled out of her whenever she saw her or even thought of her. Emma was honoured to be chosen to bring her son Jack into the world. His light and love have been her strength and source of absolute joy since the day he was born. The hardest part of the dying process for her was the knowledge she could not continue parenting him as she dreamed of. Emma looked for beauty and usually found it in everything; she learned how to enjoy every minute she lived in this beautiful wonder- filled world. Before she died, Emma wrote: “I am facing this limitless horizon without fear. Stepping forward into an unknown that I believe will be even more glorious than this life I have been so blessed to live. I'm taking all the love you've shared with me, so much love. Thank-you to my family, friends, heroes and guides that shared in this incredible adventure, let's do it again some time. I had a blast!” Emma and her family wish to thank the amazing people at Kingston General Hospital who cared for Emma with kindness from the very beginning of her ovarian cancer diagnosis in July 2006. Thanks to everyone at the cancer centre, the chemo nurses and volunteers. A big thank you to Dr. Peter Bryson for all your loving care and guidance. Thanks to Dr. John Jeffrey for all your compassion and advice, also Dr. Francis, Dr. Sheppard and Janet Giroux. Thank you to the nurses on Kidd-Davies 5. You are the best bunch around and we could not have asked for kinder caring people. You were all so special to Emma. Emma died at KGH just after 2 pm on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 in the loving arms of her wife Sarah. Her passing was perfect and peaceful. Emma was a remarkable, wonderful, loving person, daughter, wife and mother. She will be missed and always remembered. Forever in our hearts. For those who wish, memorial donations made The Nancy Sutherland Memorial Fund for the Promotion of Knowledge in Ovarian Cancer in Emma's memory would be appreciated by the family. 11273657

DORLAND, Albert A. Passed away at Hillel Lodge in Ottawa on October 6, 2008. Born January 11, 1922 in London, Ontario, Albert came from a distinguished Quaker family of United Empire Loyalists who settled in Prince Edward County. He studied math and history at Western and since Quakers cannot serve as combatants shipped out with his older brother Terry to China, where both served in the Friends' Ambulance Unit. Albert went on to become Secretary-General of the Red Cross in China at age 24, a heady period in which he met such notables as Chiang Kai-chek, Chou En-lai and Madame Soong Ching-ling, who became the first president of the People's Republic. Returning to American via Paris, Albert met and married Janine Grumbach (1923-1990) and they would have two boys together, Michael and Philippe. Albert won a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to Cornell University for post graduate studies in Chinese history at Cornell, writing a dissertation on Franco-Chinese diplomatic relations. Albert and the family moved to Montreal in 1952 where he worked for the British and Foreign Department of the Sun Life Assurance Company, with responsibilities for Sun Life's holdings in South Africa. In 1970, Albert joined the federal civil service at Statistics Canada, from which he retired in 1987, after a successful career there as Deputy-Director. A man of varied interests, and a skilled carpenter, Albert built a number of fine pieces of furniture of which he was justifiably proud. He is survived by his sons and his grandchildren Christopher, Eric and Joel. A Memorial Service was held for Albert at Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod St. on Thursday, October 9th, and a later one at the Friends' Meeting House in the Glebe. SALTER, Gary Richard 2008-10-09 Mr. Gary Richard Salter, aged 56 years, a resident of Thunder Bay passed away suddenly on October 6, 2008. Gary was born in Winnipeg and moved to Thunder Bay eight years later with his family. Gary enjoyed playing guitar and music. He was a loyal Habs fan and enjoyed writing his poetry. Gary will be sadly missed by sons Patrick (fiancé Kim) and Christopher; grandson Andrew and granddaughter Kyra, his mother Geraldine and father Orville; brothers Ron (Pat) and Ray (girlfriend Cathy); sister Shelley (Robert); nieces Dawn, Michelle and Karly as well as numerous cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. Gary was predeceased by his son Andrew. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home. Interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens will take place at a later date.

NYKANEN, Katri Maria 2008-10-09 Katri "Katie" entered into eternal rest on October 7th, 2008 at Roseview Manor in her 99th year. She was born November 25, 1908 in Tampere Finland, the eldest child of Kaarle and Maria Jarvela. Katri is survived by her sister Mirja Vierunen, Tampere, Finland. Numerous nieces, nephews and their families in Finland also survive. Her "Bethel Lutheran Church Family" in Thunder Bay of which she was a member since arriving from Finland in 1928 were a special part of Katri’s life. "Katie" will be lovingly remembered by her extended family, David and Levonna (Bonny) Wigmore, Jason and Bonnie Wigmore, Gerry and Tammy Wigmore and their children. Katri, known as a fine "lady" and a hard worker which was proven as she maintained her home at 28 Meek Street until age 95 when she moved to Roseview Manor. She also enjoyed the many years shared with her family and friends at Gurney and Grandview on Lake Superior. Her sauna was a welcome meeting place for those who visited. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur in 1981 after 44 years of marriage, son Kenneth in 1972 and son Allan in 2004, her parents and siblings in Finland. In accordance with Katri’s wishes there will be no funeral service, however a private burial in the family plot at Riverside Cemetary will take place at a later date. Katri’s request was that those who were able should visit a lonely friend, return a smile to a stranger and give hugs to those we love. Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful caring Staff at Champlain Unit, Roseview Manor. Please know how important you were in Katri’s life because you took that extra minute to show affection during your busy workday. It is that T.L.C. that provided Katri much happiness in her final years. "The favours of the Lord are not all past; his kindnesses are not exhausted; every morning they are renewed; great is His faithfulness." Lamentations 3:22-23

HALL, (Penny) Florence Henrietta, nee Penner - Born 28 August 1925 near Hepburn, Sask., eldest daughter of Henry August Penner and Helena Dyck. Penny joined the Canadian Women's Army Corps in 1944 and served in Ottawa until 1946, then worked for the Exhibition Commission, Armoured Corps School, RCAF and Customs and Excise. Married August 1951, as a military wife she made homes for her family in Ladner, Alliston, Ottawa, Kingston, Camp Bordon and in Rheydt and Moenchengladbach (Germany). Returned to work as a secretary in 1977, retiring from Art Conservation at Queen's University in 1986. A lifelong and enthusiastic volunteer, including for the Girl Guides and Trefoil Guil as well as for Kingston Frontenac Public Library and for the Friends of KFPL, she was active in St. Maragret's United Church and the Royal Canadian Legion. She was a devoted grandmother to Daniel and Jenna and a loving sister to Norma Symon and Wayne Penner; predeceased by her brother Alan and her brother-in-law Bill. Penny died suddenly on Friday, October 3 with family by her side. Dearly missed by her husband of 57 years, William (Bill) Vernon Hall, her daughters Helen Anne Hall and Mary Jean Caffro, and by her son-in-law Daniel Caffro. She was a true friend and her kindness will be missed by many. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 pm. at the JAMES REID FUNERAL HOME (1900 John Counter Blvd) on Saturday, October 11.
