OBITUARY BREEN MARIEN B.A., M.Sc., M.D.C.M., F.R.C.S. (C)On September 30, 2008 at the Royal Victoria Hospital at the age of eighty-three. He is survived by his wife of twenty-one years, Joan Golding, his children Stephen, Jennifer (Eric Helston), Charles (Katherine Sutherland), and Robin and their mother Ann Luke Claxton. His grandchildren Benjamin, Louis, William and Robert Marien, and Charlotte and Oscar Helston were his pride and joy. He was an accomplished and passionate surgeon, tennis and squash player. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Church of Montreal, 5035 de Maisonneuve Blvd. West, Friday, October 10 at 11:30 a.m. Special thanks to the kind staff at the RVH and Place Kensington. GIURISTANTE, Michel 1940 - 2008 À Montréal, le 2 octobre 2008, à l'âge de 68 ans, est décédé M. Michel Giuristante, époux de feu Claire Reeves. METCALFE, JAMES HERBERT Metzie August 12, 1923 - October 4, 2007 Jimmie was born at 308 Albert Street in Kingston and lived there until he joined the Ordnance Corps in 1939 at the age of 16. He was stationed in Kingston, Petawawa and Montreal and was sent to England when he became of age. He returned home in 1944 and married Elva Mouldey in 1946. They had two children, Robert and Susan. In 1948, he opened the West End Lunch at the corner of Princess and MacDonnell streets. He closed his lunch room in 1953, moved across the street, and opened Metcalfe's Lil Ole Chicken House. He catered to Kingston's musicians and had many a great evening discussing and listening to jazz. He closed his restaurant in 1963, ten years to the day from its opening. Jimmie and Elva opened The Malt Shop across from Frontenac Secondary School in 1958 and ran it for 30 years.He became involved in Corrections and really tried to make a difference. It came to him naturally, his grandfather, James Henry Metcalfe, was the warden at Kingston Penitentiary from 1896 - 1899. Jimmie was awarded a Life Membership in the John Howard Society in 1966 and served on the Ontario Board of Parole from, 1978 - 1985. Until his death, he was the issuer at the Motor Vehicle Licence Bureau in the former Malt Shop building. He leaves behind to mourn, his wife of 61 years, Elva, his daughter Susan, his son Robert and daughter-in-law Audrey. He was the proud grandfather of three girls, Marnie Girard and her husband Ted, Stefanie Sammon and her husband Peter, Allyson Myers and her partner Jamie Woodcock, all grieving his loss. He was also the great grandfather of Emma Woodcock, Sam Girard, Ryan Woodcock and Quinn Sammon. He is sadly missed by his golden retriever, Spencer. He loved his family, his dogs and his music, and we loved him. We miss him. He was one of the good guys - a true Kingstonian. 11264587

SYMONS, M. Marion (Gardner) - Passed away at Providence Manor in Kingston on Friday September 19, 2008 in her 96th year. Loving wife of her late husband Ned (1994), dear mother of her two sons Gary (and wife Anne MacLeod, Kingston) and Allan (Deep River, Ontario). A private, graveside service was held at the Gananoque Cemetery on September 22 with a sister-in-law, a nephew, and Betty (her dedicated caregiver and friend for the past five years) also in attendance on a beautiful fall afternoon. Special thanks to the many nursing, cafeteria, and support staff at Providence Manor for their dedicated care, and to staff at James Reid Cataraqui for their professional service. 11264080

WRIGHT, Donovan 2008-10-04 Donovan Douglas Wright, known to his friends as "Donnie", passed away peacefully on September 29th, 2008. Donovan was born in ShiningTree, Ontario on July 7th, 1932, the youngest in a family of seven of George and Lucy Wright. He grew up in ShiningTree then worked in many areas of Northern Ontario; Chapleau, Blind River, Sudbury and lastly Red Rock as a miner and carpenter. He was an innovative and creative builder of houses, furniture and even a fully operating sawmill. Donnie loved music and dancing and during his lifetime made many friends. He truly valued and cherished these friendships. The word was this: "He knows everyone". Donovan leaves to grieve, his children; Kenneth, Gwen (Darrell) of Kitchener; Heather (Bill), Donna, Karen of Arnprior; Gail of Ottawa; their mother Lorna of Arnprior and the grandchildren of whom he was very proud. He will be sadly missed by his sister Evelyn (Sue) Gapen, brother Stewart Wright and nephew John Best (Kathy) of Orillia, brother Ossie (Doreen) of Elliot Lake, brother Elgar Wright (Yvonne) of Thunder Bay and many nieces and nephews in the area. Donovan was predeceased by his parents George and Lucy, brother Robert and sister June Jeffrey. It was Donovan’s wish for no funeral. Interment of his ashes will be held at a later date. We, his family wish to thank the many who expressed their concern for Donnie with phone calls and visits to him during his difficult months in hospital and Versa Care. He greatly enjoyed Richard, Gary, Margaret and Barry who brought their youthful humour with their visits. Our special thanks to Donovan’s Doctors of TBRHSC and nursing professionals at Versa Care for their care and concern to keep him comfortable during his time there. Amedée T. Hachey - À la Villa Sormany, le jeudi 2 octobre 2008, à l’âge de 89 ans, est décédé Amedée T. Hachey, domicilié autrefois à chemin Rio Grande, Middle River. Il était fils de feu Thopholis Hachey et de feu Josephine Picot. M. Hachey était la dernière personne vivante de sa famille. Cinq frères: Emile, Medore, Ernest, Philippe et rév. Alphonse, ainsi que sept soeurs: Antoinette, Isabelle, Hermine, Marie, Marie-Rose, Ernestine et Arthémise, l’ont précédé dans la tombe. La dépouille mortelle est présentement exposée à la Chapelle funéraire Verret, 1717, promenade Sunset, à Bathurst (546-4120). Les funérailles auront lieu en l’église Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire de Bathurst, le samedi 4 octobre, à 14h. L’inhumation se fera au cimetière paroissial. MOORE, Patricia Rose - After a sudden and unexpected illness, passed away at Kingston General Hospital in the ICU Thursday October 2, 2008. Patricia Rose Moore (nee Dalwood) of Madoc, Ontario in her 70th year; beloved and adored wife of Colin Moore for 48 years. Devoted and adored mother of daughter Susan, son Kevin & wife Janice, daughter Audra & husband Scott and son Ian & wife Tracy. Loving grandmother to Victoria, Hayden, Alicia, Maia & Brodie; dear sister to Anne Farrington and brother Roger Dalwood. Predeceased by her mother Edith and her father Herbert. DIGNARD, Alvida - Peacefully passed away at the Sudbury Regional Hospital (Laurentian Site), Friday morning, October 3rd, 2008 at the age of 76 years. Son of the late Jeffrey and Léonie (née Brideau) Dignard. Beloved husband of Lorraine Dignard (née LeBreton) of Sudbury. Loving father of Géraldine Mallette (Jules) of Sudbury, Jean-Guy Dignard (Amy) of Hastings, Jocelyne Saleh (Fadel) of Toronto, Denis Dignard (Karon) of Courtice and Anne Farnan (Brendan) of Mississauga. Predeceased by his son Ronald. Dear brother of Lucien Dignard, Amanda Gallant, Richard Dignard (Ruth) and Aldoria Dignard (Joanne). Predeceased by his sisters Laura Sonier and Patricia Dignard. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by 20 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Also survived by many relatives and friends. Alvida moved to Sudbury in 1952 and started working as a miner in Levack and for the last eighteen years was a maintenance mechanic at Frood-Stobie Mill, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Inco Quarter Club, of the Knight of Columbus, Council 12047, La Toussaint and a former parishioner of La Toussaint Parish, Sudbury. For years, Alvida enjoyed his cottage life at Nepewassi Lake and his winters in Bradenton, Florida. His passion was lake trout fishing. He took great joy repairing small engines and car engines and was known as one who could fix anything. The family will receive relatives and friends at the CO-OPERATIVE FUNERAL HOME, 222 Lasalle Blvd. E. GARLAND, George Edward Retired Dupont Employee Peacefully after a battle with cancer on Friday, October 3, 2008 at KGH at the age of 77. STEACY, Lorne Francis, Retired, District Equipment Supervisor M.T.O - Peacefully in his sleep at Rideaucrest on Friday, October 3, 2008, at the age of 75. Lorne F. Steacy, loving husband of Doris for 34 years. Father of Ralph, Garry (Jo-Anne), Trina and step- father of Cliff Ward (Terry), Janice Shipton (Tim) and Susan Robertson (Rob). Lorne is survived by his thirteen grandchildren and is predeceased by one granddaughter. Dear brother of Wilma Hartley (Ken) and Gordon (Linda). HART, John Wilbert - Unexpectedly on Thursday, October 2, 2008, John Wilbert Hart, 57. Singing, dancing, paddling and life partner of Kate Jarrett. Loving and enthusiastic father of Terry, Martha and Rachel. Much loved son of Maxine Hart, and brother of Judy Stuart (Sandy), Ellie Buckmaster (Glenn), and Evelyn Hart. Favourite playground for his many nephews and nieces. Predeceased by his father, Reverend Terry Hart, and his mother and father-in-law, Mary and Merrick Jarrett. John had a wonderful and unique sense of humour and a relentless enthusiasm for life and family. It was manifested every day in his love of music, theatre, dance, sports, gardening and in coaching his children in hockey, soccer and ballet. He brought a thoughtful and principled approach to his work as Peterborough's City Solicitor for the past 18 years that made him a respected colleague and friend. He will be sadly missed by family, friends, and everyone he touched in the community. VIERICH, Helmut - Passed away peacefully on Friday October 3rd, 2008 at Cassellholme. Helmut was the beloved husband of Doris (nee Ostendorf), in his 89th year. Loving father of Helga Vierich-Drever (husband Gordon), and Bernie Vierich (wife Tracy). Dear grandfather of Cailin, Robin, and Andrew Vierich. Predeceased by three siblings. Helmut was born in Breman, Germany on February 13, 1920. He emigrated to Canada with his wife and daughter in 1955. He was a well respected painter and decorator, and was best known for the murals he painted at the Civic Hospital while he was employed there. Helmut was a member of the North Bay Shrine Club, The North Bay Nordic Ski Club, a founding member of the North Bay Canoe Club, and a founding member of the Germania Club. LADD, David Dean "Uncle Buck". B.Sc. Agriculture (Environmental Economist). Died suddenly on August 19, 2008 at the age of fifty-eight in Toronto Western Hospital. He is predeceased by his father Dean Harvey Ladd. Dave will be greatly missed by his partner Bonnie Bradley, his mother Joyce Ladd (nee Davies), sister Linda (Eric Izzard-Kearyn), brother Tom (Pauline Bartlett - Caitlin, Jenna) and sister Janie (Meilan Carr - Liam, Carolanne), along with many relatives, friends and fellow Masons. His great interest in science and nature was his lifelong passion and lives on in those he's touched. Dave's final gift was donating organs through the Ontario Trillium Gift of Life program. Beloved wife of the late Alexander (Bud) Papps (1990). Loving mother of Barbara (Stan), Clarke (Edmonton, AB) and the late Brian Papps (1977). Loving grandmother of Tracey (Carl), Ralph (Beaumont, AB), Mark (Shannon), Clarke (Edmonton, AB), Alison (Pierre), St. Louis (Victoria, BC), Christopher Papps (Montreal, QC) and nine great-grandchildren. OBITUARY ERNA MAMO On Friday September 26, 2008, Erna Mamo, "Nana", died at the age of nintey-one. Erna and her family escaped Nazi Germany and travelled to Palestine, (Israel) where they finally settled. It was here where she met and fell in love with Tony. They eloped and moved to Egypt to raise their two daughters June and Sally. In 1952, the Mamo family immigrated to Canada settling in Montreal. Tony died in 1997 leaving his beloved wife of 61 years. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's, it was decided that Erna should move to the Sunshine Coast to be closer to her daughter. Erna is survived by her daughters June, (Jean) and Sally, (Michael) and her four grandchildren Philippe, Richard, Jennifer, and Lydia; as well as her great-grandchildren Camille and Laurent. O'BRIEN, Graham J. Graham J. O'Brien, resident of Tsawwassen, BC, passed away unexpectedly on September 27, 2008. Born May 1929, the son of Logan and Ruth O'Brien, Graham grew up and lived his early years in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. In 1957, he married Louise and built a house next door to the house he grew up in. In 1965, Graham and Louise moved to Calgary, Alberta where they raised their daughter Erin. Graham worked for Western Co-Op Chemicals for twenty-five years as a Supervisor and Steam Engineer until he retired in 1991. In 1994 Graham and Louise moved to Tsawwassen, BC where they enjoyed life being near family. Graham loved working in his yard, making his favorite O'Brien stew, attending community events, and spending time with his grandchildren. He wore out three cars driving them anywhere they needed to be. Graham is survived by his loving wife Louise, daughter Erin Switzer, son-in-law Richard, and three grandchildren Bill, Mackenzie and Taylor all of Tsawwassen, BC. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews who loved their "Uncle Graham". Graham was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jean McIntyre and his brother Ernest O'Brien, all of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. There will be no Service by request. SAGAR, Pesi Cawasji Pesi Cawasji Sagar was born in Gandevi, India on October 12, 1928. He died unexpectedly in his home in Ottawa on October 2, 2008 at the age of 79. SHERGOLD, Phyllis Ruth August 18, 1926 - October 2, 2008 Ruth Shergold of Calgary passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at the age of 82 years. Ruth was born on August 18, 1926 in Vancouver, BC. Graduating from the Vancouver General School of Nursing in 1950, she continued her nursing career at the same hospital for thirty-five years until disabled by rheumatoid arthritis. A life-long member of the Salvation Army, active in the Scouting movement and serving on their national training team, she is a recipient of the Silver Acorn Award. Ruth moved to Calgary in 2000 to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Bette and Jim Watt. Ruth will also be missed by her Aunt Winnie Reed; cousin Estelle (Keith) Simons; nieces and nephews, Marilyn (Clyde) Alexander, Janice (Robert) Brooks, Stanley (Tsitsi) Watt and their children; especially great-nephews William, Julian and Jamie; as well as by the many charities she supported.
