VUORIMAKI, Elmer - March 1, 1930 - Oct. 1, 2008. Elmer passed away peacefully on Oct. 1 at The Villa in Midland. He is predeceased by his parents Samuel and Ellen and cousin Leo Vuorimaki. Survived by many cousins in Finland and Canada he will be sadly missed by Lyn (Leo), Clinton and Kiersten. Elmer first taught at Upper Canada College after graduating from Queens University and then moved to Midland where he continued to teach for over 30 years. His love for both downhill and cross country skiing was shared with many students as he coached both skiing and cross country running. Taking students to meets in the “Winnie“ were some of his happiest moments and gave his life purpose. Travelling and theatre were his other passions in life and we are so grateful to his friends John and Joan Hudson who made sure he never missed a performance once he lived at the Villa. Internment to take place at the Kirkland Lake Cemetery where he will be laid to rest with his parents. A Celebration of his Life to be held in Midland at a later date. OKE, Norma Eileen - Age 77 of Petrolia passed away Wednesday October 1, 2008 at her residence. She was born in Dresden daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy (Bear) Davis. CLARKE, Peter Lawrence - Passed away suddenly in Kitchener, Ontario on Friday, September 26, 2008 at the age of 62. Born in Oshawa, Ontario, on May 12, 1946, Peter is survived by his mother, Elizabeth and predeceased by his father, Kenneth. Greatly missed by his brothers, Michael (Lesley) and Kenneth (Debie), also nieces Katie, Stephanie, and Meghan and nephews Brian, David and Jon. From September 1968 until his retirement in December 1999, Peter taught for the Algoma District School Board. He spent many of his teaching years working with children who had special needs. He was happiest helping all students with whom he had contact achieve their potential. KNOWLES, Doris Brenda - Passed away peacefully at the Brantford General Hospital on Wednesday, October 1, 2008 in her 83rd year. Beloved wife of Harry with whom she would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary on the 20th of October. Loving mother of Brynley (Patti) of Niagara Falls, Darrell of Killaloe, Bonnie (Robert) Edgar of Ayr. Much loved gramma of Marlana, Ryan, Bronwen, Lowell and Keeley, Lindsey, Megan, Natasha, Joel and Amber, and one great-grandson, Dyllan Edgar. Survived by her sister Jean (Norman) Higgins of Cardiff, South Wales, and sister-in-law Edith Austin of Hamilton. Predeceased by her youngest son David (1989). Doris was born in Cardiff, South Wales where she was a member of the Womens Land Army. She immigrated to Canada as a war bride in 1946. Doris & Harry resided in the village of Lynden. For her married life she continued to live in Lynden and was an active member of the Lynden United Church where she was a choir member for over 40 years. She was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 500 Ladies' Auxiliary, a leader of Girl Guides of Canada, and District Secretary of the Women's Institute. Doris had a strong sense of community, she loved gardening, playing bridge and helping people. She will be sadly missed by her husband, her family and her community of friends. PETTIFER, William Earl “Earl” - In his 54th year, went to a better place on Sunday, September 28, 2008; doing what he truly loved, sitting under a shady tree, hip waders on, fishing bag and pole beside him with his signature ball cap on, he went on without us. Will be greatly missed by his boys Clayton and Wade, whom he loved deeply and only wanted the best for them always! His wife of 33 years, Karen, whom he adored and always tried his damnedest to please. His mother-in-law Maxine Pierce with whom he took under his wing to take care of her in her elderly years. BEGIN, Daniel “Spooner” Sadly the family of Daniel “Spooner” Begin announces his passing at the Welland General Hospital on Tuesday September 30th in his 55th year. MATHER, Camille (Swanson) Born on March 16th 1912 in Vancouver, B.C., died Sept. 30th 2008 in Surrey, B.C. Wife, mother, friend, nurse, politician and tireless supporter of the New Democratic Party: MLA 1960-1963 Delta. After a long and happy life Camille passed away following a fall earlier in September. Predeceased by her husband Barry, Camille leaves a circle of family who will keep her memory in their hearts. Daughters Mary and Jane, their husbands Mike and Peter; grandsons Angus (Agnes), Blair (Alicia), James (Laura), Jeremy (Sherri), Pascal (Bailey) and Jay (Janet). Great grandchildren; Cassady, Tosh, Wyatt, Elyse and Camille. The family are grateful to Dr. Paton and the staff at Peace Portal Lodge for their care and kindness over the past four years. PARK, Hyung Soo (John) October 23, 1935 - September 30, 2008 John Park, beloved husband of Angela Park of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at the age of 72 years. John was born and raised in South Korea, and resided in Germany prior to immigrating to Canada in 1968, where he married Angela in Calgary that same year. Together they raised their family of three sons. John devoted his life to supporting his children's and grandchildren's endeavours. He was an active member of Holy Spirit Parish, as well as the local Korean community. John loved golfing, curling, hockey, the outdoors, and spending time with his five grandchildren. John is survived by his wife Angela; three sons, Tom (Constance), Harry, and Mark (Jisun); and five grandchildren, Zander, Caden, Jacob, Remi and Jude. PIERSON, (nee Smart) Jean Elizabeth October 17, 1918 - October 1, 2008 Jean Pierson passed away October 1, 2008 at the McKenzie Town Care Centre at the age of 89. She is survived by her two stepchildren Bruce Pierson (Shelley) of Calgary and Denise Romanow (Gerry) of St. Michael, AB; six grandchildren Lara Gibb (Jayme) of Lloydminster, Wes Young, Dennis Pierson (Jessica), Andrea Pierson, all of Calgary, Jessica "TJ" Turcotte and Joey Turcotte, of St. Michael; and three great-grandchildren Ella, Keera and Jett. Jean is also survived by two sisters Milly McKenzie (Lorne Goff) of Rocky Mountain House, and Margaret Pearce of Ponoka and many nieces and nephews. Jean was predeceased by her husband Dennis Pierson in 1971, granddaughter Danielle Turcotte, son-in-law Roger Turcotte and infant brother Jimmy. Jean was raised in the Crossfield area and has lived in Calgary for most of her life. She was a longtime employee of Eaton's Canada. Jean had a soft place in her heart and loved caring for animals, especially cats. She will be dearly missed. OBITUARY KEITH STEWART WOOD Peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2008. Keith passed away in his ninetieth year. Dear husband of Jeannine Guillevin-Wood, oc. Loving father of Bruce (Vera Kenney), Vickie Guillevin (Yves Magnier) and Brad (Lise Brunet). Devoted Grand-Papa of Jefferey, Ryan, Samantha, Pierre (Erica Audet), Michele, Tiffany and Meghan. Also survived by his sister Marguerite Carson and his niece Donna McNeely (Bruce). He was born August 10, 1919, in Peterborough, Ontario, the son of Mildred Deyell and Bruce Wood. He served overseas during WWII in the R.C.A.F., and proudly wore his Flying Goldfish ring as a survivor of ditching in the North Sea. Above all Keith was a gentle man who truly loved his family, extended family and his worldwide collection of friends. He lived life to the fullest and his laughter, and joie de vivre will always be remembered. There will be visitations at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex (1297 chemin de la Foret, Outremont) from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, October 6. GRAHAM, R.T.S. (Bob) Bob Graham passed away peacefully in his 87th year, Monday, September 29, 2008 at Victoria, B.C. Bob leaves his loving wife Peggy, his daughter Patsy Pawluk(Brian), grandchildren Myland Pawluk (Lindsay), Charlotte Wood (Sam), great-grandchildren Tavia Pawluk, Aidan Wood, sister Peggy Adams (John). Predeceased by daughter Roberta, and son-in-law Bill and grandson Graham, brother Hugh and his parents. Bob was a life insurance man most of his eventful life. He started in the business with New York Life soon after completing service in the RCAF. Starting in New Westminsterhe moved to Calgary in 1948 and continued a highly successful career for over fifty-five years. He dedicated himself to providing professional, competent service to all of his clients. During those years he was active in all aspects of his business as a member (and President) of the Calgary chapter of the Life Underwriters Association. He obtained many designations for sales achievements and professional competency. Bob loved horses and all aspects of the outdoors having at various times developed cottages at Windermere, Sundre and his special place on the Ghost River. Bob had a brilliant, sharp, sense of humour which endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Private family Service. MORIE, John Marshall (Marsh) 1916 - 2008 Marsh passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on Saturday, September 27, 2008. A lifelong Edmontonian, proud Rotarian, businessman, sportsman, coach, Air Force Airman, world traveler, father, grandfather and dedicated husband, Marsh lived an amazing full and active life until his passing. A Celebration of Marsh's life will be held on Saturday, October 4 at 3:00 p.m., Royal Glenora Club, Glenrose Room. The family welcomes all friends and associates to attend. SPARROW, Betty Joan (nee Stagg) It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Betty Joan Sparrow (nee Stagg), much loved mother, gram, nana and friend. Born December 5, 1924, in Calgary, Betty lived in Vulcan until the age of seven when her family moved to Okotoks where she remained until her passing, September 30, 2008. While raising her five daughters, Betty spent twenty years working in the Okotoks Post Office, retiring from her role as acting post mistress in 1984. In her retirement, she dedicated her time to her crafts (particularly her eggs which were always a hit at craft sales), evenings with her bridge group, celebrations with her family, and daily long walks around town with her beloved little dog Kelsey. Betty was predeceased by Leonard Sparrow, her sister Dorothy Hogg, and grandson, Samuel Stang. She will be lovingly remembered by her family: daughter Lynda Sparrow; daughter Joan Meyer (Richard) and grandchildren, Kymberly Sparrow, Sasha Balthozar (TJ), Joalena Oltersdorf, and great-grandson Gabriel Balthozar; daughter Pat Hamilton and granddaughter Marci Hamilton (Murray Wutzke), and great-grandson Chase Wutzke; daughter Debi Stang (Brent) and grandchildren Ben and Veronica Stang; daughter Wendy Miller (Bob) and grandchildren Becky and Alanna Miller. She will be missed and fondly remembered by all of her extended family and her many friends. A celebration of Betty's life will be held on Thursday, October 9 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Foothills Centennial Centre, 204 Community Way, Okotoks. EADIE, Joyce - Passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the North Bay General Hospital - Scollard Site, on October 1st, 2008, at the age of 53. Joyce was the loving daughter of Marguerite McLeod and the late Fraser Commanda. She was predeceased by her step-father Robert “Duke” McLeod. Joyce is survived by her twin sister Janet Long, sisters Gloria Couchie, Diane Salvaneschi (Edward), Paula McLeod (Guy), Sherry McLeod (Tina) and step-brother Dennis McLeod (Germaine).
