SPENCER, Major General George Hylton (Ret'd), O.B.E., C.D. - Major General Spencer passed away peacefully in his 92nd year at home in Chester, Nova Scotia, on 31 July, 2008. Born in Seaford, Sussex, England on 20 November 1916, he was the son of Angus Farquharson and Nora (Taylor). He is survived by his wife Jean Frances (Fitzgerald); sons Peter (Morag), Kenneth (Diana), Michael (Barbara): grandchildren Patricia, Peter Jr., Lynn, Joanna, Philip, Whitney and Tory; great-grandchildren Vanessa, Alexander, Zoë, Nikolas, and Lachlan. He grew up in Toronto, graduated from Royal Military College of Canada 1938, and Queens University 1939 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He received a Doctorate (Hon) in Engineering from Royal Military College of Canada in 1982. Commissioned as Lieutenant in 1938 he was posted to the 1st Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, 1st Canadian Division, which was deployed overseas in late 1939. He served in various regimental, command, and staff capacities in England, Burma, Belgium, Holland and Germany 1942-45. These included being a senior planner and director for the very successful cover and deception strategy for Operation Overlord, the Normandy landings. Post-war appointments included: Commander Canadian Base Unit Europe; Colonel-in- charge of Administration, Headquarters Eastern Command Halifax; Commandant Royal Military College of Canada; Commander and Chief Engineer Northwest Highway System; Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans and Policy, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe. His decorations include: Officer of the most Excellent Order of the British Empire, 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, France and Germany Star, Defense Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Bar, War Medal 1939-45, Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal 1953, The Canadian Centennial Medal 1967, Canadian Forces Decoration and Bars. Following retirement from the Canadian Army in 1972, he served as Director of Metric Conversion for the Standards Council of Canada 1972- 77, after which he and Jean relocated from Ottawa to Marriott's Cove, Nova Scotia. He dedicated his energies to many military and civilian organizations, including an appointment as Colonel Commandant Canadian Military Engineers, and chairmanships of the Fisherman's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, and the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be held at St. Stephens Anglican Church, Chester at a date to be announced. Olive was born August 13, 1922 in Bow Island, AB. Olive joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 12, 1943 and was honourably released and transferred to the RCAF Reserve, General Section, Class E on December 11, 1945. Olive was a member of the Centennial Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 285. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, Nana and Great-Nana, who will be dearly missed by all whose lives she touched. Olive is survived by her loving daughter Joanne Smith and her sons, Kristopher (Colleen) and Spencer (Melissa); her loving son Gary (Laurie) Smith and their daughters, Jessica and Kristen; great-grandchildren, Gavin and Nolan. HASWELL, Joy (Gallinger) - Passed away peacefully on Sunday August 3rd, 2008 in her 85th year. Wife of the late William Haswell (1980). Daughter of the late Lillian and Harold Gallinger. Much loved Mom of Patricia (Tom) Gibbs, David Haswell (Judy) and Richard (Georgina) Haswell. Dear Gram to Joel (Kristine) Gibbs and Paul Gibbs (Jenn) and Whitney Haswell. Great Gram to Jason Gibbs. Predeceased by her grandson Kellen Haswell, her sisters Alice Denny, Rhodie Dell and Lillian Canavan, her brothers William and Kenneth Gallinger. Joy took great pride in her 40 years of volunteer work with Girl Guides of Canada. Loved grandmother of Ronald (Jane) Burridge of Pickering, ON, Andrea (Jason) Yoshida of Ajax, ON and Hamish (Germaine) Tatty of Rankin Inlet, NU. Special great grandmother “GG“ to Katherine & Victoria Burridge, Lukisha & Wager Tatty, and to Abigale Yoshida. Remembered fondly by nephew Ronald Smith of West Olive, Michigan, U.S.A. and his family. Also remembered by the de Vries family. Emily was a resident of Cobourg for 67 years. She worked at the Cobourg Book Store during the 50's and 60's. She was a member of Trinity United Church where she taught Sunday School for 15 years and was actively involved with the UCW. She was an avid active member of the Cobourg Lawn Bowling Club serving on the executive, entering tournaments and winning many trophies. She was a Hospital volunteer for over 50 years and was still knitting for the hospital shop at over 90 years of age. It was a proud moment for her in November 2005 when she received her Ontario Hospital Auxiliary Life Membership. HARDING, David Glen 42, Charlottetown, P.E.I., passed away suddenly on Friday, August 1, 2008, while on vacation in the Iles-de-la- Madeline, Quebec. Born in Norris Point, N.L., David is the youngest child of Don and Rosamond Harding of Bedford, N.S. David’s passions in life were his family, friends, colleagues and students. David is survived by sons Andrew (Meeghan) and Joshua and their mother, Debbie; his parents, Donald and Rosamond Harding, Bedford, N.S.; brothers Wade Harding (Karen) Bedford, N.S.; Dennis Harding, (Lorraine) Cambridge, Ontario; sister Glenda Eddy (Roger) Revelstoke, B.C.; father- and mother-in-law Ernest and Stella Bishop, Heart’s Delight, N.L.; sister-in-law Denise Noseworthy (Dave) Virginia, U.S.; brother-in-law Gregory Bishop (Valerie), St. John’s, N.L. David was the program manager of the Tourism and Culinary Centre of Holland College where he has worked for 12 years. David led a very active personal and professional life and was a member of numerous associations and boards. He was also in the process of completing his masters of business administration. David was instrumental in establishing the Culinary Institute of Canada as one of the premiere culinary schools in the world. He will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews; Vanessa (Matt Butler), Jessica, Zachary, Christopher (Heather), Tyler, Natasha, Bjorn, Ehren, Erika and Nicholas and grandnephew Alexander. David’s funloving personality will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. HELLSTEN, Norma 2008-08-05 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother Norma on August 3rd, 2008 peacefully at TBRHSC. Norma was in her 90th year, born in Fort William and raised in Kaministiquia and spent most of her life in Thunder Bay. She leaves behind her son Ron, daughter-in-law Wendy, grandchildren Jarret and Stacey, son Harvey daughter-in-law Mary, grandchild Kyle (wife Patti) and great grandson Rylan. She was predeceased by her husband Henry Schilke in 1979 and her siblings. Norma was known for her commitment to her family and friends and her love of traveling, gardening, knitting, sewing and baking. McCORMICK, J.T.ROY - the death of J. T. Roy McCormick, husband of the late Olive M. (McCluskey) McCormick, occurred at Ridgewood Veterans' Wing on Sunday, August 3, 2008. Roy was born in Arnprior, Ont., a son of the late Joseph and Olive (Murdoch) McCormick. He had served with the Royal Canadian Navy from 1939 to 1945. He retired from the Saint John Fire Dept. with the rank of District-chief in 1980 after 35 years of service. He had been a member of the Main Brace Naval Veterans' Association and the International Association of Fire Fighters. He was a longtime member of St. Joachim's Parish. He was predeceased by a grandson, Matthew McCormick; and two brothers, Douglas and Ronald McCormick. He is survived by one son, Keith (Marguerite) of Fredericton; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Betts of Saint John, and Patricia Ann Morrison (Neil) of Quispamsis; two sisters, Mrs. Keitha Carroll of Ottawa, and Mrs. Merle Carroll of Pompano Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Natalie McCormick of Ottawa, Nichole Fox (Michael) of Fredericton, David Betts of Langley, B.C, and Colleen and Ian Morrison, both of Quispamsis. BOTTRELL, Ruby Viola - Ruby (Thompson) died peacefully at North Bay General Hospital after a short illness on Monday, August 04, 2008 in her 90th year. She was predeceased by her husband Norman Charles Bottrell (1913 -1998). Loving mother of Sheila Culin (Ron) of Port Loring and Dean Bottrell of Loring. She was the much loved grandmother of Bettylou Driver (Rod) of Port Loring and Garry Culin (Lori) of Callander, and great-grandmother of Marc, Nathan, Kayla and Devin. Ruby was the dear sister of Mildred Berger of Orillia, George Thompson of Sundridge and Marlene MacDonald of Orillia. The Bottrell family will receive visitors at the Arnstein Gospel Hall on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. REPPON, Lorraine Joan (nee Fox) December 11, 1935 - August 2, 2008 On Saturday, August 2, 2008 our beloved mom, grandma and great-grandma (GG) passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side at the age of 72. Mom had been living with lung and bone cancer for eighteen months and had recently moved to the Rosedale Hospice. Mom was a natural caregiver, a role that she embraced with love, kindness, grace, humour and forgiveness. There are so many people whose lives were enriched because of her. In addition to raising a family and caring for others mom had a successful career with the Calgary General Hospital in the purchasing department. Mom loved her work and was well respected. Following retirement she decided to pursue her passion for amateur genealogy. Mom was a founding member of the Calgary Chapter, AHSGR and served as President, Vice-President and Newsletter Editor. Left to mourn her passing is her daughter and son-in-law Michelle and Allan Kristinson, daughter-in-law Marie; her grandchildren: Christine Corbett-Gallos (Frank), Anne-Marie, Melissa and John Reppon; her great-grandchildren: Devin, Julianna and Ethan. She is predeceased by her loving husband Bill, son Billy and daughter Brenda, her parents and all six of her siblings. STEVENS, Muriel - After a courageous battle with cancer, Muriel passed away peacefully at Henley House on Sunday, August 3, 2008. Once she had single handedly won the war, this British war bride journeyed to Canada to join her husband in 1946. Beloved wife and best friend to Art for 62 years. Loving mother to Maree Stasiak, Sharon (Peter) Rees, doting Gran and Nana to Tawnya (Marcus) Paura, Sandra (Jonah) Butovsky and Warren Rees. Blessed with four great grandchildren: Jacob, Aaron, Zoe and Hannah.
