CAMERON, William Maxwell Died peacefully in Vancouver B.C. on July 4, 2008. Dr. Cameron's vision and leadership were instrumental to the growth and development of oceanography in Canada. As well as playing a major role in establishing the Department of Oceanography at U.B.C., he oversaw the establishment of the institute of Ocean Sciences and the Canadian Centre of Inland Waters and was one of the founders of the Bedford Oceanographic Institute in Nova Scotia. In 2004 he was named as a Member to the Order of Canada. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth (Hoyt) Cameron, his beloved daughter, Robin Craig (David), his daughter-in-law, Cheryl Hawkes-Cameron and his grandchildren; Patrick, Rachel and Nicholas Cameron, Andrew and Lorna Craig and Sean Patenaude and brothers; Drs. Donald, Lorne and Gordon Cameron. He is predeceased by his first wife, Lorna I. Cameron (Bingham) and his son, William Lorne Cameron. At Dr. Camerons request, there will be no service. MacLEOD, Dorothy "Hilda" (Girard) October 18th, 1932 - July 4th, 2008 "Daughters of the Nile" Hilda was born in Ottawa Ontario. She married Dan MacLeod on July 15th 1950. Hilda will be missed and fondly remembered by her husband of 57 years, her brother Harvey and her children Donna, Donald, Douglas, Margaret and their spouses, Peter, Bette, Jackie & Chuck. ELOSCHUK, Catherine (Kay) (nee Terlesky) September 21, 1924 - July 5, 2008 It is with great sadness that Kay's family announces her passing away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre, surrounded by her family who she loved dearly, on July 5, 2008, at the age of 83 years. She is survived by her three sons: Brian (Cate), Dale (Debbie) and John (Carmen). Kay loved her family and she would talk to whoever would listen, especially when it came to her grandkids: Rachelle, Danielle, Kevin and Cameron. PUGH, Barbara Anne (nee Olson) It is with deep sadness that the family of Barbara Pugh announces her passing on July 5, 2008 of cancer. Barb was born in Calgary on May 11, 1934 to Orren and May Olson. The family moved to Jasper in 1943, where Barb proudly lived for the remainder of her life. She married in 1956 and for the next fifty-two years continued to dance and ski with her best friend and husband, Jack Pugh. Barb was a force of nature. Her sincere interest in others, deep commitment to her community and family, and exuberant love of life will be missed by all who knew her. Barb was predeceased by her parents Orren and May, and her brother Doug. She is survived by her loving husband Jack, sons Ross and Jay, daughter-in-law Sonja Neven, and the joys of her later life, her twin granddaughters Josie and Elisa. WAHL, Leo It is with great sadness, that we announce the sudden passing of Leo Wahl, on July 3, 2008 at the age of 78 years. He is survived by his loving wife, Hilda, of fifty-two years and his six children, Rita (Tom) Skeith, Barbara (Terry) Shaw, Debbie (Neil) Munch, Christine (Mike) Magee, Steven (Kim) Wahl, Patricia (Bill) Kobsar. Leo also had fourteen grandchildren, Jonathan, Dennis, Robyn, Alex, Casey, Jessica, Sarah, Megan, Cameron, Thomas, Patty, Jordan, Jaden and Calyn. He is also survived by his brother Art (Gisela) Wahl, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, USA and Canada. He was predeceased by his parents, Eduard and Emilie and his sister, Ella. Leo was born on April 14, 1930 in Weissmoor, Poland. He came to Canada in 1950, he married and resided in Calgary, Alberta until 1996, where he then retired to Vernon, B.C. SWEEZEY, “Dan“ Daniel Ronald - In loving memory of Dan Sweezey, 60 years of Sudbury, who passed away Sunday at the SRH - Laurentian Site. Dan was born in Huntsville and married Debra (Waram) in 1979 in Lively. Dan was a well respected advocate for workplace Health and Safety issues. He had worked at INCO, the USWA Local 6500 and presently with the Ministry of Labour. He was a gifted musician who played lead guitar and sang for over 30 years in the Private Collection Band. He was the founder of the Northern Ontario Relic Treasure Hunters. He was an accomplished fastball pitcher for many years. Dan will be remembered for his great sense of humour and being a good neighbour and friend to all the met. Dan was always quick to help others and he led by example in how to make this world a better place to live in. Beloved husband of Debra (Waram) Sweezey of Sudbury. Loving father of Tammy and David both of Sudbury. Cherished grandfather of Matthew, Kaylee, Megan, Jordan, and Jacob. Dear son of Ronald and Marjorie Sweezey predeceased. ARUNDELL (Burdick) Dr. Faye Dawn - Passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2008, at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Toronto, at the age of 76. Predeceased by her husband Dr. Kenneth Burdick; beloved sister of Bill (Marlene) Arundell and Carole Arundell, all of Corunna, and Ed (Elaine) of Mississauga. Faye will be sadly missed by all of her nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a well known Dermatologist practicing for many years in Menlo Park, California. She taught at the Cleveland Clinic and was a Clinical Professor at Stanford University for nearly twenty years. Faye was appointed Chairman of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Advisory Committee on Dermatologic Drugs and served as an officer of many local and national Medical Societies; she was a Board Member of the American Academy of Dermatology and Vice Chair of the Academy's Advisory Council, President of the Pacific Dermatological Association and President of the U.S. Women's Dermatologic Society. In the late 1980s and early 1990s she worked tirelessly to promote the importance of skin cancer prevention, education and detection especially for children and youth. She headed up several national campaigns and was appointed to the Presidential Commission on Melanoma and Skin Cancer by U.S. President Ronald Reagan. One of her favourite accomplishments was the introduction of the popular Joe the Mole campaign where a cartoon character warned early primary school children to avoid the sun during times when their shadows were shorter than they were! A native of Canada, she was born in Timmins Ontario in 1931. Northern Ontario was never far from her heart and she took great joy in returning in 2000 for the anniversary of her high school and rediscovering memories of growing up in the north. No matter where she travelled all over the world she always seemed to find a Timmins connection. Her family moved to southwestern Ontario in the late 1940s and she attended the University of Western Ontario. Faye graduated from UWO's Medical School in 1956, did post graduate studies in internal medicine, dermatology, and pathology in London, England, Cleveland, Ohio and Washington D.C. and authored several scientific publications. She retired in California and returned to Canada six years ago to take up residence in Toronto. There will be a private graveside burial at Lakeview Cemetery in Sarnia at a later date. Après la guerre, il est retourné à Moncton et a travaillé avec CNR et Maritime Coop, jusqu'en 1966. Après être déménagé à Kitchener, Ont, il a travaillé pour Uniroyal et pour le district des écoles catholiques jusqu'à son retour à Moncton en 1978. Il s'est retiré de la Corporation des commissionnaires (#8) de Lakeburn en 1986. Jerry était un homme très fier et avait une grande passion pour la vie et pour sa grande famille. BEVERLY WATTS Wednesday, July 2, 2008 After a courageous battle with cancer, Beverly Watts passed away peacefully with her family and friends by her side at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. on Tuesday June 24, 2008, at the age of 65. Beverly was born on November 25, 1942 in Fort Frances, Ont. She was united in marriage to Bill Watts on March 1, 1960 and together made their home in Finland, Ont. Bev was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a loving and giving lady who always put everyone’s needs ahead of her own. Her greatest love was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and they enveloped her entire life. One only needed to mention their names to see the sparkle in her eyes. She loved to make quilts and crochet baby blankets for all the special “apples” of her eye. Bev always a had a wonderful vegetable garden every summer, which her family and friends enjoyed, and her love for her flower gardens, (especially yellow flowers) will always be remembered. Bev will be lovingly remembered by her husband William (Bill) Watts of 48 years; daughter Debbie Williamson of Fort Frances, Ont.; sons Kevin (Cheryl) Watts of Fort Frances, Ont., and Greg (Melanie) Watts of Brantford, Ont. MYHAL, John - After 87 years of a very full and robust life, John Myhal passed away at St. Joseph's Lifecare Centre on Monday July 7th, 2008. He is survived and forever rejoiced in by his wife Doris, his children Cheryle Oldroyd (Laurie), Beverly Grenville-Myhal (Allan Hutchinson), Gregory Myhal (Hoa), and Denise Parry (Roger), as well as by his sisters Helen Manton and Pauline Bonyun. He was a favourite ‘Grandad Johnny' to his many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also remembered by many caring nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his sisters Kay Roper, Anne Barnes, and big brother Mike Mehal. John attended Brantford Collegiate Institute and served in the RCAF during the war. After 1945, he returned to Brantford and began his cabinet-making career on Richardson Street where he created his woodworking masterpieces for the next 60 years. Examples of his superb craftsmanship grace numerous homes and businesses throughout Brant County. In the summer, when not ‘at the shop', John could be found perfecting his other passion on the local golf fairways. He was a formidable opponent, but always a more generous friend and playing partner - he achieved his treasured ‘hole in one' late on in his career at the Burford Golf Links. John will be loved and remembered by all for his big-hearted spirit, his corny sense of humour, and always ‘being there' for family and friends. Please join our family in celebrating John's modest, but still remarkable and exemplary life. If a man's life can be measured by the firmness and warmth of his handshake, then John had no equal. AVIS DE DÉCÈS THÉRÈSE BOURGEOIS DESCHÊNES Nous a quittés à 16h30 samedi le 5 juillet entourée de sa famille – son époux de 63 ans, Marcel Deschênes; ses quatre filles: Nicole (Jamie Angus), Monique (Michel Charlebois), Suzanne (Gillian Marston) et Claudette (Wally Boxhill) ainsi que son petit-fils Marc Levac (Tanya Barbeau); ses petites-filles Amanda et Stéphanie Boxhill, et en pensée, son petit-fils Eric Levac, qui est en affectation au haut-commissariat du Canada à Colombo, Sri Lanka. Elle laisse aussi son arrière- petite-fille, sa petite princesse Izabel Audrey Levac ainsi que Sarah Gaudet et Lindsay Kearns et leurs familles. Bang Bang, comme on la connaissait grâce à Cecil Morrison (Morrison Lamothe), était la doyenne des grandes fêtes et a su dorloter ses petits-enfants et les enfants en général. Elle jouissait de la vie, même que 83 ans n'ont pas été suffisants. Elle a inspiré ses enfants à s'instruire aux plus hauts niveaux et à se dévouer au sein de la fonction publique après avoir elle-même oeuvré pour le ministère de la Santé et du Bien-être après avoir quitté la firme Morrison Lamothe. Voter, pour elle, n'était pas un privilège mais une obligation. En 1967, elle a planté 3 pommetiers du centenaire dans sa cour. Plus jeune, elle jouait aux quilles, faisait de la bicyclette et du patin-à-roulette. Elle aimait jardiner et chacune de ses filles devait cercler les rangées de légumes qui poussaient dans la cour si elle voulait sortir. Elle n'a jamais laissé les années limiter ses activités, voyageant au loin et escaladant des montagnes, même après 70 ans. Son voyage préféré a eu lieu en 1995 lorsqu'elle a visité Londres à l'occasion du 50e anniversaire du Jour-J. À cette occasion, notre père lui a fait connaître les lieux et souvenirs de son stage en Angleterre, durant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, quand il était avec l'Aviation royale du Canada. Noël et toutes ses coutumes lui donnaient énormément de plaisir et plusieurs reportages dans les quotidiens et à la télé en témoignent. De même pour Pâques, la Fête du Canada et l'Halloween. Née dans un autre temps, elle aurait oeuvré au sein du monde du théâtre et du cinéma comme conceptrice. Ses designs surpassaient souvent ceux des professionnels. Elle avait un flair et une joie de vie inimitable. Elle a fait connaître la plupart des montagnes-russes en Amérique du Nord à ses petits-enfants. Elle était à l'aise avec tout le monde et sa générosité et son hospitalité étaient légendaires. De plus, elle aimait les machines à sous et pensait que le prochain tour serait le bon. Nous espérons que Dieu saura lui accorder tous ses désirs et que son arbre de Noël sera le plus brillant du paradis. La famille tient à remercier la docteure Janet Dollin, les professionnels de la santé des soins d'urgence ainsi que toute l'équipe de l'unité D2 des soins intensifs du Campus Civic de l'Hôpital d'Ottawa. Vous avez reconnu ses souhaits et vous avez rencontré ses besoins. La famille vous en est reconnaissante. She instilled a love of public service and higher education in her children after a long career with Health and Welfare Canada which she joined after leaving the private sector. Voting was not only a privilege but a duty. 1967 saw her planting 3 centennial apple trees in her yard. She was an avid bowler, roller-skater and cyclist in her time. She loved to garden and no daughter was exempt from weeding the rows of home grown vegetables before being granted a night out. Age was never a factor. She traveled to far away places and climbed mountains well into her 70s. Her fondest trip was in 1995 when she spent the 50th anniversary of D-Day walking the streets of London with Dad who introduced her to his memories of his time in England as a gunner with the RCAF during WWII. Her love of Christmas and all its trappings is legendary. Her home was featured in many a newspaper and TV report. Ditto for Halloween, Easter and Canada Day. Born into another life, she would have been a set designer or a window dresser. Creative and artistic, she put to shame many paid professionals. She introduced her grandchildren to most of the roller coasters in North America. She was at ease with all ranks of society and her generosity and hospitality knew no bounds. She loved the one-arm bandits and always thought her turn was just a spin away. May God grant all her wishes and may her Christmas tree be the brightest in heaven. The family would like to thank Dr. Janet Dollin, the doctors and nurses of the Civic Emergent Care as well as the entire D2 ICU team at the Civic for their care of Mom. ANNA PLETT Wednesday, July 2, 2008 2 Timothy 4:7,8 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing.” Anna Plett, 79, of Blumenort, Man. (formerly of Stratton, Ont.), passed away June 17, 2008 in St. Boniface Hospital. Anna was born on November 17, 1928 to her parents, Cornelius and Anna G. Dueck in the RM of Hanover, Man. She came to know the Lord as a young lady and was baptized on July 7, 1946. Anna met Ben while working on Ben R. Plett’s farm as Ben was delivering milk for the family. Ben and Anna were married May 2, 1948 and moved to Mexico with Ben’s family on October 15 of that year. Ben and Anna lived in Mexico for 26 years where they had 16 children. In the summer of 1974 Ben and Anna moved to Ontario with 10 of their children. In 1994 they sold their farm and moved to Blumenort. Anna has knit many scarves, mitts and toques for children, grandchildren and for the MCC Thrift Shop. She volunteered many hours at the Steinbach MCC Thrift Shop. She went along many times with Ben doing Mennonite Disaster work. She volunteered in various ways in their local churches such as the Sewing Circle. But more importantly she has always been there for us as children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren giving us encouragement, love and lots of laughs. The day after celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, Anna was admitted to Steinbach Hospital where she was diagnosed with lymphoma. After only four weeks, the Lord called Anna home on June 17, 2008. She died peacefully in the St. Boniface hospital with the family by her side. Anna is survived by her loving husband Ben; 15 children, Dick (MaryAnne) Plett of Winkler, Man., Menno (Susan) Plett of Mitchell, Man, Tina (Abram) Fehr of Hyas, Sask., Margaret (Abram) Unger Bow Island, Alb., Laverna (John) Unger of Chihuahua, Mexico, Lena (George) Unger of Arborg, Man., Anna (George) Braun of Lac La Biche, Alb., Erwin (Judy) Plett of Steinbach, Man., Paul (Esther) Plett of Steinbach, Man., Elizabeth (Duane) Miller of Littlefork, Mn., Susan (Paul) Peters of Barwick, Ont., Bernie (Kathy) Plett of Grande Prairie, Alb., Norma (Ed) Hildebrand of Giroux, Man., Henry (Doris) Plett of Blumenort, Man., Irene (Syl) Precourt of Winnipeg, Man.; 60 grandchildren and 32 geat-grandchildren; three sisters and six brothers. ZUPANSKY, John 2008-07-08 Mr. John Zupansky, age 104 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 6, 2008 with his family by his side at Pinewood Court. John was born on January 19, 1904 in the Ukraine. He came to Canada 1923 by boat landing in Quebec. He caught the train to Kenora and there he worked, married and raised his children until 1943. John then moved to Fort William to work at Canada Car building planes during the War. After the War he worked at three different elevators before retiring at the age of 70. John was very proud of the house he and his wife built at 742 Brown Street, and that he was able to live there until he was 101. John always had a garden and loved to share his abundance with all of his neighbours. John was well known in Thunder Bay for his abilities to graph trees, witch wells and make weather veins. There was nothing he couldn’t do or would try to do. John is survived by his children: Pauline Orr (Norman), Jean Albanese and Mike Zupansky (Gail); daughter-in-law June Zupansky of Penticton, B.C.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. He was predeceased by his wife Katherine in 1994; son Sid in 1995; grandson David in 1992 and son-in-law Ron Albanese in 1988. Funeral services for the late Mr. John Zupansky will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2008 with family and friends gathering at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 12:10 PM celebrated by Fr. James Panikulam. Private family interment will take place at a later date in Mountainview Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. with Vigil Prayers being offered at 7:00 P.M. in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.
