IN MEMORIAM ANN POTENZA Born April 8, 1924, Anna Collecchia grew up on Minto Ave., in NDG. As a young girl, she showed an interest in music, and in particular, the accordion. She displayed an incredible natural talent with this instrument, and continued on to follow her dream of having a career in the music business. Along with her talent, she grew into a beautiful woman, and was in fact named Miss Montreal in 1943. She began to win numerous local talent shows and then went on to become a professional jazz musician. As the war broke out, she decided that, at the tender age of 20, she would like to join the USO and go overseas to entertain the troops. Upon her return to America, she began playing supper clubs in New York, followed by a tour along the east coast, all the way down to Florida. During one of her appearances in Buffalo, NY, she met and later married Dominic "Dic" Potenza, who at the time was headwaiter at one of these supper clubs. She went on the have her own radio show at WHAM in Rochester, NY, fulfilling her dream of leading an all female jazz band. In 1952, she gave birth to her son, Dominic. Soon thereafter, she decided that in order to have the family lifestyle that she desired, she would have to leave show business. She moved back to her hometown of Montreal, and together with her husband Dic, she began a new life in the restaurant business. In 1954, they opened the first Dic Ann's on the corner of Cremazie and Papineau. Her elder sister, Lina, lent her a mobile trailer to start their business, and after two years, the successes of this venture led them to construct a restaurant on Pie IX Blvd. in Montreal North. In 1957, Dic and Ann had a second child, Maria. They lived in the apartment upstairs from the restaurant so that they could maintain a close family life while at the same time taking care of their growing business. In 1964, after working 7 days per week for 10 years, in order to be able to spend more time with their children, Dic and Ann decided to close the restaurant on Mondays. Ann was a great mother and an astute restauranteur. She was happy with her new life, and understood what it took to balance both family and business. The change from the glamorous life of the world of entertainment into their new life of serving hamburgers from a mobile trailor was indeed dramatic. Ann not only accepted it, but she felt it necessary in order to live the family life that she wanted so dearly. Her friends respected her tremendously. In 1967, friends and relatives of Dic and Ann held a party in their honor, in the city of Rochester, NY. At this party, they presented Dic and Ann with a "key to the city" signed by all the people that attended the event. During the course of the night, at the request of some of the guests, one of the musicians lent his accordion to Ann and she joined the band for a couple of tunes, the last public musical performance she would ever give. According to one professional musician that we talked to, someone who knew her music well, she was in fact the best accordionist in the world. She passed away on July 7, 1988, with her family by her side. That was 20 years ago today. Dic recently turned 90 years old, and he still goes to work every day. A testament to the love they had for one another is the fact that Dic, for the last 20 years, has begun each and every day by driving to the Cote des Neiges cemetery to visit the gravesite of his wife, Ann. She has 7 grandchildren, Delbina, Jessica, Nino, Tracina, Dino, Anamaria and Joey. We will be forever grateful for the love and guidance that she gave to her family and we will never forget the sacrifices she made for us. She brought joy to all who knew her. It was 20 years ago today that the music ceased to play. Loving you forever, Don & Brigitte, Alex & Maria, and all the grandchildren. DEMETER, Arpad 1959 - 2008 It is with great sadness that the family of Arpad Demeter announce his passing on June 23, 2008 at the age of 49 years. PETERS, Esther Esther Peters died peacefully at home on July 4, 2008 in her 81st year. She was predeceased by her husband, Allan, and survived by her children, Dale (Catharine) and Shari-Lynn. Also survived by two sisters, Katie Payne and Anne Douglas; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Peters and Carol Peters and numerous nieces and nephews. Esther was born in Beiseker, Alberta on January 28, 1928, the youngest of eleven children of Henry and Marie Schmidt, and was raised on a farm in that area. She moved to Saskatoon where she met and married Allan Peters on November 9, 1957. Allan and Esther raised their family in Saskatoon, Calgary and Edmonton before retiring to Langham. She recently moved to Bethany Place in Saskatoon. Esther's main interests were her family and home. She was also an active member of Langham Evangelical Bible Church and an enthusiastic sports fan. Always stylish, she will be remembered by her family and many friends for her sense of mischief and her ready willingness to visit over coffee or a meal. She braved her illness with dignity and greatly appreciated the assistance of Cindy and Neil Peters, and Sylvia and Robert Rempel in her last days. A Celebration of her Life and Christian Faith will be held Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Langham Evangelical Bible Church, in Langham, SK with Pastor Greg Guarnett officiating. Following Cremation she will rest at the Langham Evangelical Bible Church Cemetery, Langham, SK next to Allan. PORTO, Francesco (Frank) 2008-07-07 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Mr. Francesco (Frank) Porto in his 94th year on Saturday, July 5, 2008 at the TBRHSC. Frank was born in Paterno Calabro Cosenza, Italy on May 28, 1914. He spent his early years working on his parents farm with his five sisters. Frank married Angelina Felice in October 1938 and served in the Italian Army during the Second World War. He immigrated to Canada in 1953 working for the railroad and various jobs in Thunder Bay. He was joined by his wife Angelina and son Caesar in December 1957. Frank spent his summers in his garden and loved making wine. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and telling stories of his early years in Italy. Nonno‘s pride and joy were his grandchildren Jennifer and Christopher and most of all his great grandchildren Eric, Nickolas, Aaron and Austin. Survived by his son Caesar (Donna); granddaughter Jennifer Tempelman (Gerald) and great grandsons Eric and Nickolas; grandson Christopher (Tanya) and great grandsons Aaron and Austin; sisters Rose Arabia, Marietta Brescia and Guiseppina Ferraiolo in Belgium. Numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive in Thunder Bay, Toronto, Hamilton, Belgium and Italy. Predeceased by his beloved wife Angelina in 1997; son Luigi in infancy; parents Luigi and Chiara (Bruno); sisters Antionetta Porto and Saveria Nerino; brother Pasquale in infancy; brothers in law John Arabia, Michele Nerino, Pietro Ferrailo, Vincento Brescia and nieces and nephews. MCNALLY, Alma 2008-07-07 Alma McNally, age 84 years, a resident of Pinewood Court passed away on Wednesday July 2, 2008. She was born in Fort William on May 29, 1924, the eldest child of Fred and Irene Carter. She attended Paipoonge Township schools, Fort William Collegiate Institute and graduated from the Toronto Normal School in 1942. She then held teaching positions at Cornwall, Queen Elizabeth, #2A Oliver and SS#5 Paipoonge Schools. On July 7, 1948, she married William Boyd McNally at Murillo United Church and they settled in Rosslyn Village. Alma was an accomplished pianist and an avid reader. She also enjoyed travelling, especially to visit her grandchildren in Saskatoon. She was a charter member of Pinegrove United Church and was actively involved in the life of the congregation teaching Sunday School, attending Bible study and serving on numerous committees. Alma was predeceased by her father Fred in 1969, her mother Irene in 1992 and her husband Boyd in 2003. She is survived by son Christopher Rand of Rosslyn Village, daughter and son-in-law Heather and Michel Desautels and grandchildren Phillip and Rebecca of Saskatoon, brother Thomas Carter (Gloria) of Thunder Bay, sister Joan Martin (Donald) of Barrie, brother-in-law Lang McNally (Carol) of Thunder Bay and also numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Pinegrove United Church, Twin City Crossroads (Highway 130) on Friday July 11, 2008 at 1:00 PM. LINDFORS, Sven Oscar 2008-07-07 Mr. Sven Oscar Lindfors, age 72 of Nolalu, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 5, 2008 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley and will be sadly missed by his children Sharon (Randy) Krystalovich, Gibsons BC; Sherry (Phil) Bentley, London ON; Steven Lindfors, Nolalu; Stewart Lindfors Nolalu; and Sandra (Bryce) Kelly of Thunder Bay. Loving grandfather to Tansy, Kari and Amanda Krystalovich, Sarah Bentley and Ronan Kelly. Cherished brother to Maizie (Tony) Macsemchuk and his twin sister Svea Ahola. His mother-in-law Impi Karila and numerous other family members also survive. Predeceased by his parents Oskari and Sylvia Lindfors, sister Heleny Lindfors, father-in-law Laurie Karila, niece Doreen Macsemchuk, and nephews Brian Proud and Terry Ahola. Sven will be missed by the many friends and acquaintances he made during the years that he and Shirley operated Gravel Lakes Cabins. ARBOUR, Beth 2008-07-07 The family sadly announces the unexpected passing of Beth Arbour who died peacefully in her sleep at her residence on Sunday, July 6, 2008 in her 92nd year. She had been blessed with excellent health and was independent and active to her very last day. Beth was born in Folkstone, England on September 17, 1915, and came to Canada as a very young child with her parents William and Helen Balcombe. She grew up in Port Arthur with her five siblings attending Cornwall Public School and Port Arthur Technical Highschool. She married Dona Arbour on October 23, 1937. In their early years together they lived on army bases and in Geraldton after the war. In 1949 they came to Port Arthur with their two daughters Donald and Marilyn. Beth was a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and neighbours. Her main interests were her family, home and garden, and her friends from Branch #5 Legion of which she was a lifetime member. Beth was predeceased by her parents, brothers: John, Ken and Raymond Balcombe, sisters: Nellie Douglas and Isabel Balcombe, and her beloved husband of 63 years, Dona Arbour. She is survived by her daughters Donald Vonk (Wim) and Marilyn Yurick (Glenn), granddaughters Sheryl Watson (Dale) and Carolyn and Jennifer Vonk, and one precious great grandson Tai Watson. As per Beth’s request cremation has taken place and funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at 11:00 am in the Sargent & Son Funeral Home, 21 N. Court Street with Archdeacon Mark S. Conliffe presiding. All services will conclude in the chapel and a reception will be held in the Sargent Family Reception Centre. KOHLS, Herbert Frank (Herb) - In loving memory of Herbert Frank (Herb) Kohls who passed away suddenly in St. Joseph's Hospital in Sudbury on July 5, 2008, at the age of 92 years. Herb was born November 27th, 1915 and raised in Biscotasing, Ontario. He served overseas in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps for the duration of the Second World War and came back to eventually settle in Sudbury. He is survived by his wife, Bertha Pellerin who shared 59 years together. They raised 5 children - Jacqueline Ford, husband Robert of Mississauga, Ontario; Lionel Pellerin, wife Jane of Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland; Donald Pellerin, wife Keila of Winnipeg, Manitoba; Diane Cole, husband Bert of Turtle Creek, New Brunswick and Lynda Swannie, husband Fred of Vancouver, B.C. He enjoyed his grandchildren (Steven, Robbie, Cynthia, Andrew, Karl and (predeceased) Jennifer & Jason and also 10 great grandchildren. He leaves his brother Gord Kohls and 2 sisters Mary Kohls and Clara Hampel. Herb loved young children, especially babies, the outdoors and nature. He always took the time to quietly observe and appreciate the world around him with the birds and animals. CIHA, Catherine Anne "Kate" December 27, 1953 - July 5, 2008 Catherine Anne "Kate" Ciha, beloved wife of Robert E. Evans and devoted mother of John P. Evans, passed away peacefully at her Calgary home on Saturday, July 5, 2008 at the age of 54 years. Kate was born on December 27, 1953 and spent her formative years in southeast Wisconsin. She earned her nursing degree from Marian College in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and her Master's in nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Kate practiced and taught nursing in Wisconsin and Oregon before moving to Canada in 1987. Kate was a committed Christian who placed God first in her life and encouraged others to do the same. Even as her cancer progressed, Kate maintained her firm faith in God and in His plan for her life. A warm smile, bright eyes and a kind word were Kate's hallmarks; and her unfailing ability to find the best in people and situations invariably lifted the spirits of those whom she met on life's journey. Kate's love for others was reflected in her affection, care and encouragement of her husband, Bob, her son, Jack, and many family members and close friends. Kate is survived by her husband, Robert E. Evans; son, John P. Evans; her parents, Al and Claire Ciha of Allenton, Wisconsin; her sister, Fran Heinzel of Edina, Minnesota; and by four brothers: Patrick Ciha of Cedarburg, Wisconsin, James Ciha of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Michael Ciha of Naperville, Illinois and Philip Ciha of Germantown, Wisconsin. Kate is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. IRVINE, Robert "Rob" Arnold February 29, 1944 - July 5, 2008 Robert Arnold Irvine, beloved husband of Lorraine of Calgary, passed away on July 5, 2008 at the age of 64 years. Rob was born on February 29, 1944 in Fergus, ON. For over thirty years he was a teacher in Ontario, the Northwest Territories and Alberta. He Captained the S.V. Nordic Prince and took pleasure in introducing his children, grandchildren, students and friends to the sea. As a teen he was a member of the Army Reserves in Guelph, ON and later on in life became a member of the Masonic Lodge and Chamber of Commerce in Didsbury, AB, the Okotoks Rotary Club and the Catalina 30 Sailing Club in Sidney, BC. Rob was an active volunteer and his hobbies included skiing, painting, gardening, camping, cooking, hiking, travelling and photography. Rob's sense of humour, caring and giving and even his competitiveness will be remembered by all. "In giving is the reward." Besides his loving wife of forty years Rob is survived by his son, Jeff Irvine (Jennifer) of Calgary; daughters, Lara Robins (Brett) of Etobicoke, ON and Leah Munn (Brian) of Victoria, BC; grandchildren, Anita and Jillian Robins, Sammy and Zachy Irvine; sister, Joyce Erskine; brother, Ronald "Bud" Irvine; sisters-in-law, Janice Corbett and Marguerite Tateishi; brother-in-law, Norman Corbett and families. Olga Briggs SACKVILLE, NB - The death of Olga Briggs, age 84, of Sackville, occurred peacefully in the early morning of Sunday, July 6, 2008, at the Sackville Memorial Hospital. Born in Bayfield, she was a daughter of the late Wilbur and Edith (Stright) Briggs. Olga lived a life devoted to helping others, including the hundreds of students she taught in a career that spanned 49 years. Blessed with a quick wit and a way with words, she took great pleasure in composing poems to mark special occasions. She also enjoyed dancing, playing cards, tutoring and walking in the Waterfowl Park. Olga will be sadly missed by her sister, Hilda Ripley of Sackville; nephews, Bill (Kendra) Sloan, of Moncton and Eric (Debbie) Sloan of Murray Corner; and several great-nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister, Kathleen; brother, Cyril; brother-in-law, William "Bill" Sloan; and nephew, Gary Sloan.
