COULOMBE, Clarisse (née Brousseau) 1938-2008 À Gaspé, le 11 juin 2008, à l'âge de 69 ans, est décédée Clarisse Brousseau, épouse de Valmond Coulombe. Outre son époux, elle laisse dans le deuil ses filles Céline et Maryse (Christian Lapointe), ses petits-enfants Mélissa, Etienne et Benjamin, ses frères et soeurs, beaux-frères, belles-soeurs, neveux et nièces ainsi que de nombreux autres parents et amis. Les funérailles auront lieu le samedi 28 juin à 11 heures, en l'église Notre-Dame-du-St-Rosaire à Mascouche. LIGHT, Douglas Walter October 1, 1933 - June 22, 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Walter Light at the Sarcee Carewest Hospice on Sunday, June 22, 2008 after a lengthy illness at the age of 74 years. Doug was born on October 1, 1933 in the house his father built in Battleford, Saskatchewan. His father F.G. Light, the son of an early N.W.M.P. Officer was born in the barracks at Fort Battleford. His mother was of the historic Gunn family who trace their ancestry in Western Canada back to the 1700's through the Selkirk Settlers of Red River. Doug attended Battleford Central School, Battleford Collegiate Institute and Notre Dame College, Wilcox, Saskatchewan where he formed a life-long friendship with Pere Athol Murray. After leaving school, Doug worked alongside his father at the Lighthouse Service Station and Garage, later becoming partner in the business. In his childhood, Doug developed a keen interest in the Mounted Police, Fur Traders, Indians and military history of the west. By age seventeen Doug had his own room in the Commanding Officers house at Fort Battleford displaying his historical artifacts. In 1956 Doug was hired as a curator for the Luxton Museum in Banff. While living in Banff, Doug travelled extensively collecting historical artifacts. Doug and family moved to Calgary in 1966 and he became the curator of the Ethnology Department and later Director of Collections for Glenbow. While with Glenbow he wrote and published "Tattooing Practices of the Cree Indians". In 1976 Doug joined Parks Canada as Western Director of Historic Sites until his retirement in 1987. During his retirement he continued to be involved with the Buffalo Nations Museum in Banff and the Military Museum in Calgary. He also wrote and published "Footprints in the Dust", according to some the best account of the North West Rebellion of 1885, telling the story from both perspectives. He then began working on a regimental history of the 22nd Sask. Light Horse. Sadly, he did not live to see this published. He was an active member of the Lord Selkirk Assoc. of Rupert's Land, Winnipeg, a director of the Battleford N.W. Historical Society, a director of Buffalo Nations Museum in Banff and of the Museum of the Fur Trade, Chardon, Nebraska. He was a member of the Metis Societies of both Saskatchewan and Manitoba, a member of the Military History Society of Manitoba and a member of Notre Dame College Alumni. The knowledge he had of the RCMP, military history and the Native community is lost forever and his expertise and sense of humour will be missed by his many friends in the collecting fraternity. Dad's lifelong passion for hockey and baseball saw him coaching and attending his children's and grandchildren's games. Some of his favourite memories were of summers spent at the family cottage on Jackfish Lake with his grandchildren. Doug was a wonderful and caring husband, father and grandfather. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Meriel, son Daryl (Linda) Light; daughters Susan McLeod, Laurie Light and Kathryn Light (Earl Caron). Doug is blessed to have nine wonderful grandchildren, Blake, Brittany, Keith, Courtney, Paul, Holly, Jordyn, Kellen and Danica. Doug is also survived by his brother F. Don Light of Battleford; nephew Fred W. Light; nieces Donna and Patricia and numerous cousins. Doug was predeceased by his parents Fred and Reta Light. Loving father & father-in-law of Roland Costantin & Janice of Chatham, Vic & Sandy Costantin of Petrolia, Gabriel & Diane Costantin of Ottawa and Sandro & Donna Costantin of Wallaceburg. Sadly missed by his grandchildren Jessica, Jacob and Chris. Dear brother & brother-in- law of Angela Rappanotti of Tecumseh, Bruna Caleffi of Toronto, Rita & Carmello Attardi of Italy, Alfia & Antonio Biscaro of Wallaceburg and Orazio & Pino Lattanzi of Italy. He will be remembered by his many nieces & nephews in Canada and Italy. Evidio originally was born in San Dona di Piave, a province of Venice, Italy. As a young man, he was an underwater commando in WWII. Athleticism was a major part of his life, playing semi-pro soccer and the opportunity to represent Italy in the later cancelled Olympics for the 400 meter hurdles and 400 meter relay team. He was inducted into Wallaceburg's Sports Hall of Fame with the 1975 Merchant Soccer Team and as a builder of soccer in our community. Evidio was proud of being a Canadian Citizen for over 50 years. He retired from the Lambton Generating Station but was best remembered for his horticultural services in and around Wallaceburg. He was awarded several certificates of merit for good citizenship from Wallaceburg's Parks & Recreation, Chamber of Commerce and more notably from the Governor General of Canada. Friends will be received at the HAYCOCK-CAVANAGH FUNERAL HOME, 409 Nelson Street (at Elgin) in Wallaceburg from 2-4 & 7-9 PM on Thursday. Parish prayers will begin at 6:45 PM. HAMILL, Philip 1929 - 2008 Born in Dundalk, Ireland, Phil studied at University College Galway, where he met his beloved Nancy, with whom he would share the next 53 years. He immigrated to Canada in 1957, settling in Ottawa where he had a long and enjoyable career at the National Research Council. Phil was an accomplished scholar and scientist, yet he valued his family and friends most of all. He will be remembered for his remarkable spirit, his unfaltering optimism and his extraordinary joy for living. Phil was the best of company - articulate, witty, wise, generous and so very kind. His pleasures included literature, tennis, art, onions, writing, whisky, a broad spectrum of music, scotch broth, theatre, wordplay, cooking and solving crossword puzzles with Nancy and son Philip. He lived every day as we all wish we could - fully, happily and thankfully. Phil will be hugely missed by his wife Nancy, sons Philip and Declan and daughter Mona, daughter-in-law Kathy Hamill, son-in-law Doug Cruikshank and granddaughters Ally Clare, Fiona and Genny. The family sincerely thanks Clareen Prabhu, Jane Dickey-Morrell, Diane Lundell, Marjorie Riopelle, Adriana De Waal, Doris Gardner, Marie Armstrong, Dorothy and Charles Murphy, Marjorie and Dick Graham, Cy and Audrey Barrass, Jo Brodie and everyone else who has generously provided support and comfort. DENDYS, Ann (nee Boyd) March 16, 1918 - June 23, 2008 Our beloved Ann passed away June 23 at the Rockyview Hospital with her daughter at her side. It is with great sadness the family will miss a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Ann came to Canada in 1945 from Cheshire, England. She met and married Emil (John) Dendys, raised two children, Linda and Lee, and shared a wonderful life together for sixty years. Her pride and joy was her family and her grandchildren whom she talked about continuously. Her talents with sewing, gardening, playing bridge and taking active pride in her community were endless. She was predeceased by her husband John and son Lee. She will be lovingly missed by her daughter Linda (Stephen) Hill, grandchildren Michelle (Udo) Kaufmann, Michael (Laura) Munoz and her great-grandchildren, Ben, Evalyn and Anais. At Ann's request there will be no Funeral Service. A Memorial Gathering for family and friends will be held on Saturday, July 5 at 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Hill residence, 9 Summit Pointe Drive, DeWinton (Heritage Pointe Golf Course). DUFFIN, Frances After a lifetime of devotion while surrounded by her large and loving family, Frances quietly passed away on June 24, 2008. Frances was born September 25, 1921 in Empress, AB. She was the second of five children born to Frank and Corinne Sparrow. An enthusiastic athlete, Frances spoke fondly of her childhood memories. The family eventually settled in Drumheller where Frances met the love of her life, Thomas. In 1942, Tom and Fran married and together raised nine children. In 1963 they moved the family to Bowness where they resided for the next forty years. Frances is remembered for, and ultimately defined by, the strength of her love and the size of her laugh. Her greatest joy truly was her family and her cheerful and indomitable spirit will stay with them forever. Frances is predeceased by her larger than life husband, Thomas, and an infant daughter, Frances. She is survived by siblings Madge Contenti, Gerry Rowbottom, Pat Sparrow, and Bill (Lucie) Sparrow. As a lasting legacy she leaves her children: Tom (Marilyn), Frank (Carrolle-Lynne), James (Larissa), Pat (Kenora), Mike (Debbie), Sandra (Murray Price), Bob (Karen), Bill (Cherie), Sallie (Terry Greenway), seventeen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. DUGUID, Veda Doris 1918 - 2008 Veda Doris Duguid of Calgary passed away on Monday, June 23, 2008, her 90th birthday, at the Royal Park Nursing Home, where she had resided since February 2001. Veda who is survived by her daughter Dorothy, was predeceased by her husband Jim (Jock) in September, 1991 and by Dorothy's twin sister, June, on April 16, 2007. GRECO, Francesco October 8, 1924 - June 24, 2008 Francesco Greco passed away peacefully on June 24, 2008 surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 83 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle. He enjoyed the company of close family and friends at all times. Born in San Giovanni In Fiore, Cosenza, Italy on October 8, 1924. Francesco with his wife Margherita and three children relocated to Canada in 1959. He retired from the City of Calgary Parks & Recreation, and was publicly recognized for his dedication. Francesco is survived by his children: Joe and Mary Greco, Teresa and John Laratta, and Tony and Linda Greco and is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Cathee SanGregorio, Joe (Suzie) Laratta, Rita (Franco) Felicella, Rita and Melissa Greco, and Frank and Anthony Greco; great-grandchildren: Adriana and Donny SanGregorio, Damiano and Gianni Laratta, and Talia and Gianna Felicella. Francesco is also remembered by his brother Pasquale (Maria) Greco, sister Filomena Nicastro of Calgary and brother Rosario of Italy; as well as numerous nieces and nephews of Calgary and Italy. Francesco was predeceased by his wife Margherita in 1997. A special thank you is extended to Dr. Sargent, the nurses, and care givers at Bethany Care Centre Harvest Hills for the care, love, and kindness that he received. GRONBERG, William Damgaard It is with love, joy, sadness and fond memories that we announce that Bill passed away on June 23, 2008 at the age of 77 years. He is survived by his wife Philomena of fifty-eight years marriage, along with his children Colleen (Gordon) Lees, Brian (Madi) Gronberg, Trina (Bruce) Coombs and nine grandchildren; also his brother Arnie and Maureen Gronberg and family. He was predeceased by his son Rory, his brother Eric and his parents. Born in Standard, AB, Bill was the first generation of Danish immigrant parents. His early years were spent with pipeline construction, and then he became a founding partner of Ritchie Brother Auctioneers until retirement at the age of fifty-three years. Thereafter he pursued a life of travel, lake activities and time with family and friends. He was an active member of the Nisku/Leduc Rotary Club, Scandinavian Club and various other organizations of which he contributed time, energy and donations. We would like to thank the caregivers at home and the nursing staff at St. Joseph's Auxiliary Hospital Palliative Care Unit. RHODES, James Howard August 13, 1921 - June 23, 2008 Jim Rhodes passed away in Calgary at the age of 86, on June 23, 2008. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Muriel Agnes Rhodes, in January of this year. He is survived by his daughters: Sandra Park and Joanne Rhodes (Brent Rusk); and his grandchildren, Jason Wanvig (Janine Axelson), Stephanie Wanvig (Darren Pittman), Cole Wanvig and Krista Park. Jim proudly served as a mechanic in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II after which he returned to Alberta to begin a forty-one year career with the CIBC. He enjoyed attending his daughters' and later his grandchildren's sporting activities, loved camping with his family, and traveled the world with his wife Muriel. Jim was a talented craftsman who never hesitated when asked for a helping hand. Jim had a passion for food, especially Italian pasta and his wife's homemade pie. He golfed with the Nifty Fifties for years and looked forward to having coffee with his friends every week. Jim spent the last four months of his life at Staywell Manor where he made many new friends and was treated with kindness and respect by the staff and residents. The family wishes to thank everyone at the manor for providing Jim with a comfortable and happy environment during that time. In accordance with Jim's wishes, there will be a private family Graveside Memorial at a later date. SCHADT, Orval Howard Morris On June 22, 2008, in his 83rd year, after a courageous battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd). A father, a husband and a friend, whose journey blended a joy of life with laughter, he lived and worked in many communities including Mawer, Saskatoon, Creelman, Fillmore and Calgary. An avid sportsman and games player - camping, boating, gardening, cribbage, poker and bridge were his passions. Many will remember incredible fish stories with Orval as he helped his daughters, grandchildren, friends and relatives appreciate nature and the outdoors. While accomplished in his trades and sales positions, Orval's devotion to his family and friends was his priority. He was actively engaged and provided support as a husband to Donna, a father to Penny and Gail, a father-in-law to Kevin, and a grandpa to Joel and Kristina. He is also remembered by many friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews throughout the United States, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Alberta. In recent years, his generosity led him to volunteer with Resperatos, as well as organizing game committees and events at Bethany Village. On Thursday, July 3, 2008 at 2:00 p.m., a Memorial Service will be held in celebration of his life at Bethany Village (240 Lincoln Way S.W., Calgary, AB). Cremation has taken place.
