CACCIA, Charles L. Peacefully in Ottawa, Ontario surrounded by family and friends on May 3, 2008. Mr. Caccia is survived by his wife, Ivana; his mother Emanuela and brother Stefano; his children Nicolette and John; and grandchildren Jessica and David. Born April 28, 1930 at Milan, Italy, Mr. Caccia graduated from the University of Vienna in Vienna, Austria in 1954 prior to a career of more than forty years serving Canada as a parliamentarian and advocate for environmental causes. Mr. Caccia was first elected to public office as a member of the City of Toronto and Metro councils in 1964. He was elected to the House of Commons for the riding of Davenport in Toronto in 1968 and served as Minister of Labour and Minister of the Environment for Canada in the Liberal government of Prime Minister Trudeau. Following thirty six years as a parliamentarian, he continued his work in the environmental arena at the Institute of the Environment, University of Ottawa. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa, on Wednesday, May 7th from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A celebration of Charles' life will be held in the Chapel on Friday at 11:30 a.m. with a reception to follow in the McGarry Family Reception Centre. GOLDSMITH, Jeanne (nee Allender). On Friday, May 2, 2008 Jeanne died in her home surrounded by all her children. She was the beloved wife of the late Sidney Goldsmith. Cherished mother of Jacqueline, Catherine (Jerry), Jennifer (Stephen), Geoffrey (Wendy) and Terence. She was the loved grandmother of Shane, Jesse, Christopher, Melissa, Mariah, Gwyneth and Evelyn. She will be deeply missed by her children. The family extends special thanks to Nurses Marija Rutkauskas and Sonia Klebansky for their exemplary nursing care. They gave Jeanne strength and dignity. ATHOE, Robert Paul “Bob” - Passed away at the St. Catharines General Hospital on Friday May 3rd, 2008 in his 74th year. Beloved husband of Shirley. Loving father of Scott Athoe and William (Brunetta) Athoe. Step-father of Kenneth (Barb) McClary, David McClary and Michael McClary. Edith was the last surviving member of the family of the late John W., and Etta Iza (Heaney) Whitehead. Edith was born in Clinton, P.E.I., on May 30, 1922. Loving wife of the late Lloyd George Bowness, and loving mother of Elizabeth (John) Walker, Summerside; Eleanor (Al) Pasanen, Courtney, B.C.; Kenneth (Donna) Chilliwack, B.C.; Barry (Susan), Summerside, and Kathy (Dan) Higgins, Fort Smith N.W.T. FRANCESCHETTI, Angelo 2008-05-05 Mr. Angelo Franceschetti, aged 86 years, of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on May 2nd, 2008. Born in Pasiano, Italy September 16th, 1921, surviving World War II where he received several Medals of Honor. He came to Canada in 1951 where his devoted wife Wanda and daughter Fernanda later joined him in 1953. He was a hard worker for Rino Zanetti and Dante Gasparoto until 1986 when he retired. Angelo then enjoyed the time he had for his hobbies of making wine and gardening. A loved and respected father and grandfather, he loved spending time with his family, from chasing his grandson Christopher and granddaughter Kayla around Thunder Bay to flying to Italy and spending time with his granddaughters Julia and Alexandra, he shared many memories with his loved ones. Angelo enjoyed entertaining friends and relatives with many barbeques and family meals at his home where love was always disbursed. He was a member of St. Peters Church, the Da Vinci Centre, along with the Associazione Nazionate Alpini. He is predeceased by his parents Antonio and Mildred Franceschetti, brother Gicomo Franceschetti and nephew Adriano Franceschetti of Pasiano, Italy. He is survived by his devoted wife Wanda of Thunder Bay, daughter Fernanda (Robert) of Pordenone, Italy, son Claudio (Betty) of Thunder Bay; grandchildren Kayla and Christopher of Thunder Bay, Julia and Alexandra of Pordenone, Italy, sisters Nina of Milano, Italy, Maria and Elsa of Pordenone, Italy along with many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 9th, 2008 when family and friends will gather for the funeral mass in St. Peters Church at 10:00 A.M. celebrated by Rev. Lino Santi. Interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens to follow. Prayers will be held in the Chapel of Jenkens Funeral Home at 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 8th. HERNANDEZ, Maria Estela 2008-05-05 Maria Estela Hernandez died on May 4, 2008 at St. Joseph‘s Hospice. She was born on December 27, 1953 in El Salvador and immigrated to Canada in December 1986 with her husband Adan. Maria Estela was very active in her parish of St. Agnes. Everyone who knew Maria knew they were loved in abundance. She always had a joyful laugh and a hug that enveloped you in her spirit. Her gift to all who knew her was to be part of her community of unconditional love. She is survived by her husband Adan, her son Joel Orantes (Rosa), her mother Maria Alberto (in El Salvador), her daughter Anna Cecilia Alberto (in Guatemala) and her grandchildren Alexander and Joanna Orantes and Maria and Angel Alberto, as well as her many dear friends. She was predeceased by her beloved son Edwin Hernandez and her father Victor Arteaga. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 12:10 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at St. Agnes Church with Rev. James Panikulam officiating. Prayers and Vigil will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2008 (tonight) at St. Agnes Church. He is also survived by brothers and sisters Genevieve (Ken Guy), Moose Jaw, Sask., Dorothy (Lorne Boone, 1924 - 1955), Hamilton, Ont., Gladys (Jack Grant, 1909 - 1989), Choiceland, Sask., Leonard (Marilyn Noble), Moose Jaw, Sask, brothers and sisters-in-law Reta (Heard, Tom Kalincak), Manitouwadge, Ont., Jerry Breen, Seabright, Ont., Erma (Kendrick) Heard (Victor, 1921 - 1976), and Helen (Akers, Lester Johnson, 1921 - 1981). He was predeceased by his father Victor Julius Johnson, (1889 - 1971) and his mother Anna Mary Anderson, (1898 - 1937), his sister Margaret (1923 - 1996) and his brother Lester (1921 - 1981). He was also predeceased by father-in-law Russell Heard (1893 - 1976), mother-in-law Phoebe Heard (1901 - 1996), brothers-in-law Alex Grant (1911 - 1986) and Chester Heard (1925 - 1998) as well as sister-in-law Ruth Jordan (1928 - 2006). and Anna Mae Heard (1941 - 2006). The family will have an internment on Friday, June 13 and a celebration of Harold‘s life will be held on Saturday, June 14. Location and time to be announced. MALLETTE,Vina 2008-05-05 Mrs. Vina Mallette passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4th, 2008 at her residence in Dawson Court. Born in Windsor, ON, she later moved to Hearst, ON and married the love of her life Felix. Her family was her main interest. She loved singing and playing the guitar with her sister Theresa. Vina had many talents. She loved to travel to see her much loved relatives. They moved to Thunder Bay in later years. She will be missed by loving husband of 64 years Felix, sons Felix (Raeanne), Richard (Pat), Wilfred (Connie) and Jeffery (Doriann), daughter Shirley (Mike) and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by brother Orville Russell, sisters Theresa (Paul), Nellie (Dominic), Dolly and Dorothy as well as many well loved nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Wesley United Church on Wednesday, May 7th beginning at 1:00 pm. Private family interment will be held at a later date. MUGRIDGE, GEORGIE EDWINA - It is with regret that we announce the death of Georgie Edwina (Carr) Mugridge of Saint John, NB, wife of James A. Mugridge, which occurred on Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John on July 24, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Sadie (Kierstead) McQueen. Georgie loved to be involved with youth, and was a long time volunteer with Saint John Minor Hockey. Her greatest passion was enjoying time with her children and grandchildren. Survived by her husband, Jim; son, Scott (Kim) of Saint John; daughter, Sharyl "Shari" (Rick) Williston of Saint John; four grandchildren, Ryan and Matthew Williston, Kaitlyn and Jenna Mugridge. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424. At Georgie's request there will not be any formal visiting at the funeral home. MERRITT, GLADYS - Gladys Merritt, wife of the late Ronald H. Merritt of Saint John passed away on May 2, 2008 at the Saint John Regional Hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Grate's Cove, Newfoundland and was the daughter of the late Elias (Alex) and Elizabeth (Vey) Ivany. Besides her husband and parents she was predeceased by one son, Paul Wayne Merritt; and one brother, Leslie G. Ivany. Gladys was united by faith and was a long time adherent to Grace Presbyterian, the former St. John-St. Stephen Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters (Loyalist Temple # 13) and the Orange Order and in her earlier years she worked at MRA's and Sears Warehouse. Gladys is survived by one daughter, Janet (Don) Shea of Rothesay; grandson, Trevor (Jenny) of Rothesay; and granddaughter, Lisa of Lower Sackville, NS. She was a special "Nana" to great grandson, Logan, who was the apple of her eye. Also survived by one brother, Percy (Eileen) Ivany of Saint John; special cousin, Lil Nordstrom; and her daughter, Marilyn Dalton; as well as several nieces and nephews. Resting at the Cavanagh Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street (634-1712) with visiting on Monday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. HALE, FREDERICK ERNEST - The death of Frederick Ernest Hale of Saint John, NB, husband of Rita (Wiggins) Hale, occurred on Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Ridgewood Veterans Wing. Born in Fredericton, NB on December 13, 1922, he was a son of the late Frederick and Elsie (Parsons) Hale. Fred was a veteran of the Canadian Navy and served during World War II. He survived being torpedoed while on convoy duty en route from Halifax to the United Kingdom (HMCS Chebogue - off the Azores, October 4, 1944). After the war, Fred worked in the grocery business in Saint John. He ran a successful grocery and butcher shop (Hale's Grocery) on Russell Street in East Saint John for a large number of years. Many patrons will be familiar with his friendly and jovial personality while doing business. Survived by his loving wife, Rita for what would have been 60 years on September 29th, 2008; two sons, Fred Jr. (Patricia) of Rothesay, NB and Robert "Bob" (Valerie) of Bedford, NS; two brothers, Gerald (Carmel) of Redbank, NB and Richard of Halifax, NS; four grandchildren, Stefanie and Ashley of Rothesay, Gillian and Jonathan of Calgary, AB; and one great-granddaughter, Morgan; several nieces and nephews including Patsy Robinson of Toronto, ON. Predeceased by three brothers, Victor, Leslie and William; and one sister, Margaret Winchester. DAWSON, MARGARET IRENE - The death of Margaret Irene Dawson, loving wife of John Edward Dawson, occurred on Saturday May 3, 2008 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, after a lengthy illness. Born 1923 in Saint John she was the daughter of the late William and Cecelia (Gadon) Madore. Margaret was an avid Bingo player, loved to go to yard sales and flea markets. The greatest love was her family. Besides her loving husband Ed of 53 years, she is survived by her sons, Kevin Dawson (Yvonne) of Dartmouth, Jeffrey Gianakos (Gail) of Saint John and Karl Gianakos (Joan) of Kelowna, BC; daughters, Wendy James (Peter) of Ontario, Judy Dawson (Larry Snow) of Saint John, Nancy Gianakos of India and Diane Gianakos of Saint John; 17 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one brother, Richard Madore of Mass, USA; and Barbara Bouchie of Miramichi; several nieces and nephews and many friends. Lucille Hebert (Donelle) 1952 - 2008 Lucille Hebert age 55 of 259 Highfield Street Moncton, nb passed away at the Dr. George L Dumont Hospital on May 04, 2008 after a brief illness. Born in Grande-Dique June 13th, 1952. She was the daughter of the late Alcide Donelle and her mother Jeanne Donelle (Hachè). Lucille worked at the Dr. George L Dumont hospital in the O.R. department. Lucille is survived by her husband, Andrè Hebert, her mother, Jeanne Donelle (Hachè); brothers, Jean-Paul Downing (Jackie) Camille Donelle (Janice) both from Fitchburg Mass., Charles Donelle (Theresa) Moncton as well as several nephews and nieces. Born at Lowry Farm, McQuade District, he was the son of the late Robert and Selena (Kelly) Lowry. Bob was a retired CNR brakeman/conductor with 33 years service. COOPER, Teresa Margaret (nee Forestell) This exceptional woman, who meant so much to so many, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 79, on Friday, May 2, 2008, surrounded by family after battling leukemia with courage and grace for the past year. Predeceased by her one true love, her husband G.J. (Mike) Cooper. Mourning their loss, yet celebrating Teresa's life are children: Helen (Peter), Margaret, Michael (Sara) and Eric (Rose), and grandchildren: Andrea, Patrick, Daniel and William. ZANNA, Marta. On Thursday, May 1, Marta Zanna lost her life long struggle with kidney disease. Marta was predeceased by her sister, Maria, at the age of 16 and is survived by her parents, Anna and Michele. Marta's strong spirit and compassion made her unique. She was always looking out for other people above her own pain. She loved movies, dancing and above all children. She was a role model for so many people. She battled kidney disease since birth and had four transplants. The first transplant lasted 20 wonderful years. Even in her pain she always had a smile. She will be sorely missed by all those whose path she crossed. We would like to thank the staff of The Royal Victoria Hospital, especially the Dialysis and Transplant units for their many years of care and support.
