BIRCHALL, Gordon Albert Gordon Albert Birchall was born the seventh child of Rose (Blick) and Albert Birchall in the Virden Hospital in Manitoba on March 23, 1925. He died on April 8, 2008 in Acacia Ty Mawr, Shawnigan Lake. Gordon is predeceased by his parents, his brother Doug (Pat) Birchall, his sisters Gladys (Harvey) May, Florence (Gordon) Stevenson and his brother-in-law Roy Stoutenberg. He leaves to mourn, his wife Vivian, his sisters Edith Stoutenberg, Gertrude (Herbert) Kaake and two brothers, George (Phyllis) Birchall and Stuart (Betty) Birchall, plus numerous nieces and nephews. Gordon's dad was a Section Foreman on the Canadian National Railroad, so family moves meant that he took his schooling in Woodnorth, Manitoba and Vandura and Fairlight in Saskatchewan. Gordon joined the Army out of high school during the Second World War. He belonged to the Highland Light Infantry Anti Tank Support Corp. On his return from overseas he worked as a teller with the Bank of Toronto in Bredenbury and La Fleche, Saskatchewan. In October of 1949 he joined the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in Winnipeg, Manitoba and in 1956 he moved to Calgary with that same company. On his retirement in March, 1983, Gordon had served thirty-three and a half years with C.M.H.C. and was the Loans Manager in the Calgary office. Gordon's special interests have always been in sports. He participated in curling, tennis, golfing, archery, biking and jogging but he felt the biggest thrill of all came from downhill skiing. Gordon also loved to dance and so it was fitting that he should meet his wife, Vivian Jean McClarty while square and round dancing with a singles group in Calgary. They were married July 4, 1970. Gordon and Vivian lived in the Palliser and Woodbine areas of Calgary before moving to Arbutus Ridge in Cobble Hill, B.C. in 1989. Special thanks is offered to the staff at the Lodge on Fourth in Ladysmith and the staff at Acacia in Shawnigan Lake for their loving care over the last few months. A Memorial Service to celebrate Gordon's life will be held at FIRST MEMORIAL FUNERAL SERVICES, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, Monday, April 14 at 2:00 p.m. Gordon will be missed and fondly remembered by all his immediate and extended family and friends. HANSFORD, Suzette Katherine 1972 - 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Suzette on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at the age of 35 years. Suzette fought a courageous battle with cancer, not once losing hope or giving up. TAYLOR, Algar John 1918 - 2008 Born September 24, 1918 at Travers, Alberta, John died suddenly on April 2, 2008 in Calgary at the age of 89 years. He was predeceased by wife Jeanne in 1991 and by brothers Reginald and Frankland Taylor. John was a proud son of southern Alberta pioneers J.J. and Emmeline Taylor. He grew up near Travers until joining the Calgary Highlanders and RCAF for WWII. Later he worked for Massey Harris and in Calgary Real Estate. John was active in the community as a genial member of the Kiwanis, Lions, and Glencoe Clubs, and the Royal Canadian Legion (Kensington No. 264). The last of our family elders, John leaves niece Joan Watson and her family, nephews Reg, Bill, and Derwyn Taylor and their families, and Vivianne Millington and her family. A generous and compassionate gentleman who was a dedicated family man who worked as a milkman and courier most of his life. A man of many talents he was a baker and candy- maker extraordinaire who enjoyed model- making and oil painting. Herb also enjoyed boxing, swimming and singing and guitar playing in his younger years. He was known as the Ambassador of Goodwill at the Sudbury Downtown Farmer's Market and was mentor to many. His claim to fame was his kind heart and smile as well as his fudge, caramels and Christmas cake. Herb's baked goodies will be missed by many. John Evans, a resident of Rainycrest in Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Friday, April 11, 2008 at his residence. He was born Oct. 18, 1923 in Charlton, Wantage, Berks in England, and came to Canada in June of 1924 to Fort Frances. John completed Grade 9 and 10 of the General Shop Course in June, 1941 at Fort Frances High School. He then completed a five-year apprenticeship at the trade of Motor Vehicle Repairing Specialized on Jan. 15, 1948. John also completed a course of Heavy Duty Diesel Construction Equipment on June 11, 1965. Since John was single, he was able to move easily and worked all over Canada at various jobs. He worked in Alberta on the Canada Pipeline with Leduc Oil. He also worked in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Fort Frances, Hamilton, and Toronto. He liked to ride his motorcycle throughout southwestern Ontario on his days off of work. John also loved music and enjoyed playing his accordion. We all enjoyed his wonderful sense of humour and plentiful jokes. He had a way with children, and his nephews and nieces are left with fond memories of him. He retired in 1988 and shortly thereafter returned to Fort Francs to live. In the last 10 years, John suffered from blindness and Parkinson disease, which rendered him immobile and with impaired speech. He was predeceased by his parents, Florence Winifred and John Percy Evans; sisters, Connie Pierce and Renee Gartshore; and brothers-in-law, Michael Pierce, Jim Gartshore, Bruce Biddeson, and Earl Fawcett. John is survived by his sisters, Mary Biddeson of Fort Frances, Ont., Violet Fawcett of Calgary, Alta., and Joan (Richard) McCutchon of Hanover, Ont.; brother, Ted (Doreen) Evans of London, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Pastor David Groff of the Bethel Baptist Church will officiate. ATKINSON, Patricia May Patricia ("Pat") Atkinson, just shy of her 84th birthday, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Care Center in Calgary on April 8, 2008. Born in Banff, AB on May 14, 1924 she spent most of her working life in Burnaby, B.C. She was widowed from her first husband, Victor, by Polio in 1953, and then married Neal Atkinson in 1960. After many years of living in New Westminster, B.C. they made the big move to Calgary in 1998 to be closer to family. Throughout her life, she enjoyed crocheting, baking delicious cakes and pies with and for her grandchildren, playing solitaire and spending summer vacations with her family in Mara Lake, B.C. Pat is sadly predeceased by both her husbands Victor and Neal, and most recently her daughter Pam and son-in-law Ron Bullen. She is survived by her two sisters Bobbie Dodds of Calgary and Louis Randall of High River, AB; stepdaughter Marion (Barry) Sirianni of Calgary; two sons, Frank (Deanna) Margetts of Victoria, B.C., Del Margetts of Boston Bar, B.C.; grandchildren Lisa (James) Scott, Tanya (Jeff) Morris, Marla (Collin) Montgomery, Carol, Steve and Michael Sirianni. Her great-grandchildren are Chaz, Sierra, Kaya, Jules, Oliver, Emma, Lisa, Cody, Tasha and Michael. She will lovingly be remembered by family, friends and all that knew her, especially Ralph Canham who was our eyes and ears when we could not be there, thank you Ralph for all that you did for grandma. The family would also like to thank the medical staff at Chinook Care Centre who looked after Pat while she stayed there as well as in her final moments of life. PETERSON, Anne Marie May 6, 1929 - April 9, 2008 Anne Marie Peterson of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at the age of 78 years. Anne was born and raised in Calgary, AB. She worked at Suncor as a legal secretary until her retirement in 1986. Anne's friends were very important to her. She was an avid outdoorswoman, who enjoyed hiking, biking and skiing. Anne also loved playing bridge and attended programs at the Kerby Centre and the Family Leisure Centre. REBMANN, Karl Franz 1917 - 2008 Our beloved father Karl passed into the arms of Jesus on April 9, 2008. Karl was born in Neu Kupnowice, Austria-Hungary. After awakening to Christ as a youth, Karl remained steadfast to his faith through numerous upheavals in Europe. He dreamed of a peaceful life and was able to fulfill that dream in moving to Canada in June of 1953. Karl was a merchant, owning the Salamander Shoe Store in Calgary. In 1973 he retired and moved to Kelowna. Always ready for a prayer and Bible reading, Karl constantly gave thanks and Glory to God. In his last years, Karl resided at Carewest Signal Pointe, where residents appreciated his singing of Amazing Grace! Karl was predeceased by his loving wives Charlotte (Kasik) in 1964, Regine (Wendel) in 1999, and his daughter Gabriele in 2005. He is survived by his daughters Edie Morrison, Christine (William) Blake, Delinda (Brian) Deines, his son Ehren (Beverly) Rebmann, twelve grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. A Graveside Service will be held at the Kelowna Cemetery on Saturday, April 12, at 9:30 a.m. Memorial Celebration to be held at a later date in Calgary. Many thanks to the great souls who lovingly cared for Karl in his last years, among them Ghaneet and Salaam Taye and the wonderful people at Carewest Signal Pointe. SIDWELL, Kenneth Allan September 22, 1923 - April 4, 2008 Kenneth Allan Sidwell passed away on Friday, April 4, 2008 at the Foothills Medical Centre with his family by his side, at the age of 84 years. He will be fondly remembered by his loving wife of sixty years, Connie; his two sons David (Donna) and Jim; five grandchildren, Stephanie, Erin (Ben), Andrea, Dylan and Devon; as well as five great-grandchildren. OBITUARY GLADYS MULLIN (nee PHELAN) 1921 - 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Gladys Mullin (nee Phelan) on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. Gladys is predeceased by her husband William (Bill) Mullin and her brothers Leo (Jacqueline) and Bill (Gerry) Phelan. She is survived by her brother Gordon (Norie) of Calgary, Lena (Rudy) Gaudette of Massachusetts, and Anne (Don) Jackson of Brampton, and many nephews, nieces, other relatives and good friends. She was the loving mother of Sheila (Jean Guy Carriere) of Chambly, Rosemary (Richard Waring) of London, and Bill of Hamilton. She was the adored Nanny of eleven grandchildren (Patrick, Maryse, Daniel, Marc, Tara, Junie, Alison, Jeff, Caitlyn, Fiona and Christopher) and seven great-grandchildren (Marius, Leo, Charlotte, Quentin, Noah, Evelyn and Gabrielle). Gladys was an elementary and high school teacher for over twenty-five years, teaching in Longueuil, St. Hubert, St. Hilaire and McMasterville. She was an active member of the St. Lambert Golf Club, past president of the St. Lambert Lioness's Club, a member of the Catholic Women's League and devout parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, an active participant at Maison Desaulniers, and a valued bridge partner to many. Gladys will be remembered by all as a gentle and caring lady. The family wishes to express its sincere thanks to the wonderful staff of the Palliative Care Unit of Charles Lemoyne Hospital. Gladys is resting at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home, 307 Riverside Drive, St. Lambert with visitation on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 844 Notre Dame Avenue, St. Lambert at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2008. Lenore Isobel Bewick (Knechtel) Posted By Posted 1 day ago June 2, 1921 – March 29, 2008 Lenore Isobel (Knechtel) Bewick, on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Peace Arch Hospital following a recent stroke. Lenore was 86 and had recently moved to Surrey, B.C. from Trenton, Ontario. Raised in Hanover Ontario, Mom later left for Toronto to attend secretarial college. There she met the love of her life after a gentleman called over to her residence seeking three other available girls to go skating on a blind date. Matched up by height, she met Howard, a young aspiring chemist. They married on April 28, 1945 and together they raised four children while living in Syracuse NY, Montreal, Quebec and Windsor, Ontario. After retirement Mom and Dad moved to Trenton, Ontario where they settled into a relaxed life enjoying visits from the grandchildren. With the knitting needles and a copy of Reader’s Digest never far away Mom enjoyed watching the birds attend her feeders and the ducks dabbling in the Bay of Quinte. In August 2007, after finding the trips across the country to visit too demanding, Mum moved to the west Coast where the majority of her kids lived. Daughter of Karl and Margaret Knechtel (predeceased) of Hanover, Ont. Beloved wife of Howard Bewick (predeceased). Dear mother of Brenda (predeceased March 3, 2008) and her husband Steve Henley of Surrey, B.C., Paul and his wife Mary of Sudbury, Ont., Dave and his wife Beth of Prince Rupert, B.C., Brian and his wife Janet of San Diego, Ca. Dear sister of Doris and her husband Dr. Bill Zinn of Waterloo, Ont., Paul (predeceased) and his wife Deloris of London, Ont. and sister-in-law Marion and her husband Jack Williams of Penetanguishene, Ont. Lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Rob, Adam, Sam, Erin, Shauna, Melissa, Kayla and Zach. A memorial service was held at the Peninsula Resort Retirement Living in Surrey BC on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 followed by cremation. Special thanks to the fourth floor staff at Peace Arch Hospital who made Mom comfortable in her closing days. GRABO, Fred January 30, 1911 - April 10, 2008 Fred Grabo, beloved husband of Bertha Grabo of Beiseker, passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at the age of 97 years. Fred was born in Calgary. He farmed in the Level Land community for many years and still resided on the family farm at the time of his passing. Fred was an active member of the Beiseker Level Land Seventh Day Adventist Church. Besides his loving wife Bertha, Fred is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Gail Grabo, Rodney and Pat Grabo and Cameron and Colleen Grabo all of Beiseker; five grandchildren, Shannon (Scott) McQuaig, Bradley (Jennifer) Grabo, Dean (Monica) Grabo, Kerry (Scott) Sackett, Derek Grabo (Reagan Munden); six great-grandchildren; and one brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Margeurite Grabo of PEI. He was predeceased by his brother Alfred Grabo and his sister Bertha Palmer.
