SMITHEMAN, William Charles 'BILL'. (1943-2008) Suddenly passed away on April 6, 2008 at his home. Beloved son of the late Irene (Haywood) Rigby Smitheman and the late Clifford Smitheman. He will be missed by his stepfather Lynn Rigby, his stepbrother Kevin as well as many other relatives and numerous close friends. STRICKLAND, Mary Kathleen - Passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at the Brantford General Hospital on Sunday, April 6th, 2008, in her 57th year. Beloved wife of Tom Strickland for over 36 years. Loving mother of Tania (Scott) and Michelle. Devoted grandmother of Ricky, Jamie, Timmy and Dylan. She is survived by many brothers and sisters. Born in The Netherlands in 1908 daughter of the late Anna Beunker and Johannes Wijsman, she was the last surviving member of her family. Maria worked in the Housekeeping Department at St. Joseph's Hospital, she enjoyed Knitting and also loved playing cards and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church. Loving mother of Nellie Wijsman of Chatham, John and Tina de Kievit of Chatham, Dick and Tina de Kievit of Chatham, Joe de Kievit and friend Martha Harris of Chatham, Diane Van Dusen and husband Ralph of Chatham, Mary Hoskins of Ridgetown and Anne and David Hebert of Wallaceburg. Sadly missed by 22 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. He fought a courageous but short battle with cancer. Marion leaves to mourn her three loving daughters, Meg (Keith) Simpson, Kathy (Todd) Hansen and Tina (Keith) Bruce, grandchildren Kevin, Melissa, Jessie and Rhys. Ordonné prêtre le 29 juin 1956, il part pour Cuba le 13 septembre 1957 où il a travaillé comme missionnaire jusqu'en 1994. Au Canada, il exerce son ministère dans la région de Laval depuis 1994. Il laisse dans le deuil, outre ses confrères missionnaires, ses frères Gérard (Olga Samiga), Jean-Guy (Gisèle Chartrand), Gilles (Réjeanne Lafrenière) et André (Francine Berthiaume), ses soeurs Henriette (Jean Ste-Marie), Rita (André Massicotte), Monique (René Ste-Marie) et Suzanne (Gilles Fortin). L'ont précédé son frère Jacques et sa soeur Denise. Il laisse également dans le deuil des neveux, des nièces et de nombreux autres parents et amis. BRADFORD, Roger 2008-04-07 Roger died April 4, 2008 at the age of 67, succumbing to the ravages of Parkinson‘s disease, cancer and most recently heart disease. He was a much beloved husband, father, friend, teacher, coach, athlete, volunteer, outdoorsman and "stickybun" chef extraordinaire. Roger was born in Oshawa Ontario in 1940 and moved to Thunder Bay as a child. He graduated from Port Arthur Technical School (PATS), now Hillcrest, and the University of North Dakota before becoming a physical education teacher at the newly built Sir Winston Churchill High School, where he taught until his retirement in 1997. He lived life with a quiet dignity which often hid the passion he felt for teaching young people, coaching student athletes and conveying his belief in the benefits of activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. Roger always viewed his life humbly and had once said his obituary should read "I was born, I lived and I died." It was a life well lived. In his teenage years, Roger was part of the PATS team that twice won the National Rifle Shooting Competition. He was a cadet and militia officer with the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment which allowed him to shoot competitively at a high level and learn the joys of teaching others at summer camp in Dundurn. Roger enjoyed spending time on the ski hills with his friends, family and student athletes. In 1968, he ended a ski day early in order to marry Lynda, the person with whom he would share 40 years of great adventures, fun with friends and lazy summer afternoons on the deck. In 1982, Roger and his family participated in a teacher exchange to Australia. He learned new sports, and met many people with whom he remained in close contact. In 1985, he "ran away with the circus" for a summer with his wonderful friends Tom and Margaret, to work for the Thomas Carnival. He learned the ’ins and outs‘ of fairs and the carnival industry which helped him in his role as a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition. Roger spent most autumn weekends at Whitefish Lake at the Port Arthur Hunt Club, hunting ducks and partridge with his friend Roy and the dogs, or at the odd goose hunt with Ducky Dan. In retirement, Roger had the chance to travel the world with Lynda (as long as it wasn‘t during hunting season). He viewed exotic animals in Kenya, escorted 6 Australian women around Italy, snorkelled in Belize and on the Great Barrier Reef, bicycled in Mississippi, participated in a pub crawl by horseback through the Australian outback and watched the World Triathlon Championship in Madeira with his Australian Exchange family, to name a few. Roger was honoured to participate in the ceremonial kick off at the 2007 Community Bowl Football Game with his friend Gerry. They were delighted to see how the High School Football program that they helped to develop and foster was recognized and celebrated. Recently, through the Northwestern Ontario Secondary School‘s Athletic Association and OFSAA, he received the "Pete Beach" award for his outstanding contribution to sport in Ontario He watched with awe and wonder as his daughters Kendel and Erin grew, matured and accomplished life goals. He relished in the opportunity to share many moments with them, from their early activities and sports, to their later wanderings throughout the world. To his friends (from his youth, university life, the Vickers Heights neighbourhood and his teaching days) he answered to many names, including "Coach", "Rod", "Bo" or Roger. He always appreciated the fact he had so many long term, loyal friends who loved all his rough edges and continued to visit, call and support him in so many ways. Roger was predeceased by his parents David and Nora. He is survived by his wife Lynda, daughters Kendel and Erin (Toronto), and brothers David (Brighton, Ontario) and Ted (Vancouver). He will be greatly missed by all. Cremation has taken place with a private burial at a later date. A Celebration of Roger‘s Life will occur on Friday April 11 from 2-4pm at the Valhalla Inn, with a recollection of memories to begin at 3pm.
