BARNWELL, Vera Eleanor BARNWELL, Vera Eleanor - 93, Prince Street, Pictou, passed away March 24, 2008, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late E. Malcolm and Annie (MacKenzie) MacDonald. Vera lived all her adult life in Pictou, and was happily involved in her community, enjoying small town life. She was also a member of Pictou United Church, where she sang in the choir for many years. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Thomas, Prospect Bay; grandson, Christopher, Timberlea; granddaughter, Heather, Halifax; great-granddaughter, Claire. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter, and two brothers in infancy. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Haliburton Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to Pictou West Victorian Order of Nurses, Aberdeen Palliative Care Society or a charity of your choice. SIMMONS, Wilfreda Gertrude SIMMONS, Wilfreda Gertrude - 95, Halifax, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 25, 2008, in Northwood Care, Halifax. She was the wife of the late Frederick Simmons. Born in Sandy Point, N.L., she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Susan (MacDonald) Renouf. Wilfreda worked for several years at Stadacona with various responsibilities. She also worked for a time in the United States as a cook. She was a member of St. Catherine's and St. Theresa's Parishes in Halifax. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother. She is survived by daughter, Freda Bellefontaine, Halifax; son, Frederick Simmons, Vancouver; sister, Venita Blaskerfield, Halifax; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by son, Lemuel; grandson, Sean Simmons; brother, William Renouf; sisters, Theresa Renouf, Minnie Halbot, Viola Jollimore, Jean Gorman, Edith Tyner. Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 28, in Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Parish, Normandy Drive. A reception will follow the service at the church. Interment to follow in Fairview Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Nova Scotia Branch. SMITH, James Irving SMITH, James Irving - 76, Lower Sackville, passed away peacefully in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, on March 23, 2008. He was a 32 year veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy and a true sailor at heart. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 53 years, Doris Smith, Lower Sackville; daughter, Gayle Tweedie (Smith), Moncton, N.B.; son, Christopher, Lower Sackville; grandchildren, Christian and Breannah Tweedie, Moncton, N.B.; sister, Elenor, Toronto, Ont.; nieces and nephews from Ontario and Nova Scotia. He was predeceased by son, Phillip; daughter, Angela; granddaughter, Ferris; father, mother and three brothers. There will be a Canadian Forces service for family only, with burial at sea. Tailfer René François 1926 - 2008 « Si à mon souvenir vous êtes triste, oubliez-moi, si je fais naître une sourire alors mon passage sur cette terre n’aura pas été vain. » René François Tailfer À sa résidence, Québec, le 24 mars 2008, notre père est décédé. Monsieur René François Tailfer, fils de feu le Lieutenant-colonel René Benoît Tailfer et de feu Anne-Marie Eckes nous a quittés pour aller rejoindre son épouse feu dame Denise Ménard. Il demeurait à Québec (Charlesbourg). Immigrant d’après guerre, il a choisi de suivre notre mère dans ce qui allait devenir son pays d’adoption. Avec l’amour de celle qui lui a donné trois enfants, Danielle, Alain (Claire Malouin) et Christian, il a su bâtir un patrimoine duquel il était fier et auquel il n’a cessé d’ajouter des éléments de sa vie et des références historiques relatives à nos origines. Il nous a donné en héritage le plus précieux des biens, nos valeurs. Pour lui l’honneur, la famille et la foi étaient ce qu’il y a de plus précieux et c’est sur cette base qu’il a su affronter les écueils de la vie dans son nouveau pays. Aujourd’hui nous te rendons hommage pour tout ce que tu as fait pour nous et surtout pour ce que tu as été, un homme bon. Allez repose toi et veille sur nous comme tu l’as toujours fait. Ruby (Chase) Allison The death of Ruby (Chase) Allison beloved wife of Henry (Bud) Allison of 530 Old King George Highway, Miramichi occurred at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Easter Monday, March 24, 2008 at the age of 77. Born in Lyttleton, NB, the daughter of the Late Isaac and Ethel (Harris) Mutch. Ruby loved bowling, line dancing, horseshoes, washer toss, bingo, cards and traveling. She was a member of the Ladies Bowling League, Wednesday's mixed senior team and Friday's mixed senior team of which she was the captain. She was a member of the Newcastle Line Dance Club, member of the Miramichi Friendship Senior's Club, member of the FSNA Club and member of the Heritage Club. Ruby worked with the Federal Government for 32 years in the Post Office Department, mainly in the financial part. Ruby was a people person, therefore loved her job as well as the people she met. Ruby is survived by: three sons: Garry Chase (Linda) of Ottawa, ON, Douglas Chase (Margaret) of Lyttleton, NB and Robert Chase (Joanne) of Bridgewater, NS; Nana to Stephen, Nancy, Jonathan, Andrew, Ross and Krista; special grand nana to Sarah; one sister: Evelyn McAllister of Aylmer, PQ and one brother, Allen Mutch of Sunny Corner, NB and several nieces and nephews. DODDS, Yvette 2008-03-25 Yvette Dodds passed away peacefully with family by her side at Thunder Bay Interim Long Term Care, Saturday March 22, 2008. She is survived by her son Bob and his partner Susan Phillips and her two children Devon & Hannah, sisters Yolande (Ambroise) Genier of Cochrane and Suzanne (Kees) Stryland of Timmins, brothers Fern Lamarche from Iroquois Falls and Rene Lamarche of Mattawa, ON. In-laws Charlotte Johnson, Andy & Lillian Dodds, Rejiane Lamarche and Lucille Lamarche of Cochrane ON. and many nieces and nephews and their children. Yvette was predeceased by her husband Gordon, parents Hector & Therese Lamarche, sister Aline Girard, brother Gerald Lamarche, in-laws Mr & Mrs Ross Dodds, Helen & Arnie Wessman, Bud Johnson and nephews Ross Dodds and Brian Johnson and niece Mary-Anne Wessman. Yvette enjoyed the outdoors, camping & fishing with Gordon & Bob and walking with her many friends. Travelling to Briers with Gordy and golf holidays to San Antonio, Texas and a trip to New Zealand. she also enjoyed sports including Tai-chi, golf and curling often sitting on boards and committees to help with golf tournaments and bonspiels, especially those to raise funds for cancer and heart & stroke. Yvette was also involved with the Celiac Disease Association. She had a soft heart for people in need and sponsored a couple of little girls in South America through the Foster Parents Plan. Along with raising Bob, Yvette and Gordon fostered some boys (Larry, Darren & John) here locally through the Children‘s Aid society. Visitation and prayers will be held at St Andrew‘s RC Church on Wed. March 26 at 6:00 pm with Funeral Mass at 10:00 am Thurs. March 27 at St. Andrew‘s, followed with interment at Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Northern Cancer Research or the Celiac Association.

CHISHOLM, Christopher "Eugene" CHISHOLM, Christopher "Eugene" - 89, of 104 Hawthorne St. Antigonish, passed away on March 24, 2008, in St. Martha's Hospital, peacefully surrounded by his family. Born in Heatherton on December 28, 1918. Eugene was a son of the late Jack Dan and Mary Ann Chisholm. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served as a trooper with the British Columbia Dragoons in England, Africa, Italy, France, and in the liberation of Holland. In 1950 Eugene married Clarita (Cameron) and together they raised 11 children. After 29 years of service, Eugene retired in 1979 from his position of District Supervisor with the Nova Scotia Power Corporation. Eugene lived his life with a strong commitment to faith, family and service to his community. He was an active member of St. Ninian's Parish and the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree, and was honoured for the 50 years of membership in 2003. He was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Arras Branch 59, holding many positions including Past President. Eugene was the recipient of the prestigious Palm Leaf to Meritorious Service Award. His volunteer work also included initiating the installation of the Life Line for Antigonish seniors, and palliative care volunteer at St. Martha's Hospital. He was involved in numerous fundraising activities and will be fondly remembered for years of calling bingo with his children for the Knights of Columbus. Eugene was proud of his Scottish heritage both as a "Jack Dan" and member of Clan Chisholm. Having enjoyed many hobbies, he was always excited about a good catch on George's Bay. He enjoyed hunting and gardening, was an avid card player and delighted in teaching his 24 grandchildren how to play a "good game of crib". Through his example he taught us how to live each day to the fullest, to enjoy a practical joke, and always to look out for one another. Eugene is survived by daughters, Loyola (Allan) MacDonald, St. Andrews; Monica (Tonny) Krauch, Bedford; Maureen (Mark) Crossman, Fall River; Paula (Brian) Kirk, Jo-Anne (Aubrey) Doiron, Clarita (Doug) Campbell, Antigonish; sons, Cameron (Frances), Herring Cove; Martin (Mary), Deep River, Ont.; Pius, Antigonish; Christopher, Halifax; Mark (Trina), Antigonish; 24 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Also surviving are his sisters, Mary B. Gilbert, Quincy, Mass; Theresa MacDonald, Heatherton; Jovita (John) Chisholm, Heatherton; Mamie Rogers, Prince Edward Island; brothers, Lauchie (May), Heatherton; Patrick (Joan), Toronto; sisters-in-law, Helen and Agnes, Heatherton; Mary, Halifax; many nieces and nephews. OLSON, Arthur Victor Sr. 1929 - 2008 Arthur passed away quietly on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Foothills Hospital due to complications associated with Alzheimer's Disease. He was 78. Arthur was a much-loved grandpa and dad, a man who almost became a Catholic priest, a gourmet cook who made the best baked/stuffed lobster ever, an avid gardener and the guy who gave his dog "Puddle" more than her fair share of yummies. Those who knew him were better people because of the inner smile he projected. Arthur was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on June 6, 1929. He was the son of a Swedish pew maker and an Irish mother. He served briefly, but proudly, in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He left the Corps to become a teacher in Boston. He received his Doctorate in Education from Boston University in 1957 - working under noted reading psychologist Donald Durrell. After working at several American universities, he joined the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria in 1977, where he served in various capacities until his retirement in 1994. In 1979, Arthur was named in the "Who's Who in Education" by Cambridge University. He authored or edited fifteen books and wrote hundreds of articles throughout his career. His last book, "Dying of the Light" chronicled his journey in helping his beloved wife, Aila, with her Alzheimer's. Aila died in Victoria in January, 1992. She was his true love, his best friend and he missed her very much. During the mid-1990s, Arthur was vice president of the B.C. Alzheimer's Association and head of the Greater Victoria Alzheimer's Association. In 1997, Arthur moved to Calgary to be near his family. He is survived by his son Randy, daughter-in-law Sheelagh, grandsons - Arthur (Sarah), Graeme and Peter of Calgary, son Bob (Connie) and daughter, Ginny Petrilli (Frank) of North Carolina. Many thanks to Dr. Charles Dixon for his many years of care, to Dr. Ed Verbeek, the staff of the Mount Royal Care Centre and to the staff of Unit 32 at Foothills Hospital (Bernie, you are the best!), the Emergency Department and the hospital's security staff. Thanks for making this sad time in our lives bearable. Your compassion is very much appreciated. CURRIE, James 2008-03-25 Mr. James Currie age 80 years, a resident of Thunder Bay passed away at the T.B.R.H.S.C. on Tuesday, March 25, 2008. Jim was born June 15, 1927 in Port Arthur, son of longtime residents Minnie and John Currie. After attending city schools, Jim began an electrical trades apprenticeship. He worked for several local companies, including Manitoba Pool Elevators, Canadian Westinghouse and Peterson Electric. In his youth, Jim was involved in a number of organizations but his consumate dedication was to the Catholic Young Peoples Society, the largest and most active church-oriented youth group in the city at that time. He was the perennial chairman and the motivating force behind their social, educational, religious and cultural activities. It was shortly after this time, when Jim’s entrepenurial and political life began to develop. Jim established Currie Electric Limited, working alone and sometimes with a helper at the beginning and eventually built the company into a well respected enterprise. He sold the company in 1972 but it still operates under the same name at this time. It was in those early years that Jim served for five years on the Port Arthur Separate School Board. He also served as chairman of St. Patrick’s High School Board and as a member of the provincial committee for Catholic High Schools in Ontario. In 1959, Jim was elected to the Port Arthur Public Utilities Commission beginning a career of service that spanned in excess of three decades. Jim served as chairman of the Commission for more than half of those years and was appointed by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario by Order in Council as the first chairman after amalgamation of the new Thunder Bay Hydro Commission. Jim has held leadership roles in the Ontario Municipal Electrical Association and has served several terms as chairman of District Three’s OMEA. In other activities, Jim has also served as Vice-President of the Ontario Liberal Party representing Northwestern Ontario. Over the years, Jim has held membership in the Chamber of Commerce, the Electrical and House Builders Association, the Knights of Columbus and the 4th Degree Assembly. Jim was instrumental in establishing the Order of Alhambra in Thunder Bay and personally received the Charter in a ceremony in Buffalo, N.Y. for this charitable organization. Over the years, on a recreational level, Jim has sponsored several Little League Baseball and Minor League Hockey teams. More recently, Jim has volunteered his time and energy to the construction of the Pass Lake Curling Club and the Pearl Volunteer Fire Hall. Jim’s most notable trait is his generosity and willingness to assist anyone or any cause in need of his carpentry and electrical skills. He is a man of almost untiring energy and talent and he has contributed innumerable knowledgeable ideas in helping his friends, neighbours, church organizations, urban and rural community organizations with their construction projects. Jim is a man of action and the first one to pitch in when someone is in trouble or in need of a helping hand. And he has always endeavoured over his political career to helping Thunder Bay and its people enjoy a sound economic future and an enjoyable and healthy quality of life. Jim has served 35 years in public life, winning 24 elections, a record for anyone in Thunder Bay. His dedication to this city is unparalled. His generosity and integrity is attested to by a wide range of citizens from all over the district. This is the measure of Jim Currie-- a true man of the North-- hard working, self-made, direct, uncomplicated and unsophisticated. Really a simple and humble man, sensitive to peoples’ needs, not taking himself or life too seriously and always displaying a warm and humorous nature to everyone he meets. Jim is survived by his daughter Jane Wilson, granddaughter Stephanie Wilson, sister Minnie Stirrett, and brother Vic Currie. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers: John, Frank, Bert, Danny, sisters: Mary Papineau, Christina Jeffrey, and Margaret Laforrest. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 25, 2008 at 11:00 am when family and friends will gather for the Funeral Mass at St. Margaret’s R.C. Church, celebrated by Rev. Ciaran Donnelly. PEDWYSOCKI, Steven David 2008-03-25 1983-2008 Mr. Steven David Pedwysocki, age 24 years, after a brief illness, passed away suddenly in hospital with family by his side on Saturday, March 22, 2008. Steven was born in Thunder Bay November 22, 1983. He attended local elementary schools and graduated from Hillcrest High School. Steven began working at Delmor Trucking Ltd. while attending high school. There he gained the knowledge and passion for working on large trucks. After five years of employment he moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta to begin his apprenticeship program in Heavy Duty Mechanics. Steven‘s true love was his family and home in Thunder Bay. He moved back home in 2007 and joined the team at Kenworth of Thunder Bay continuing his apprenticeship. Steven enjoyed BMX biking, snowmobiling, reading magazines, collecting trucking hats, model cars and spending time with his long time friends. He will be sadly missed by all that knew and loved him. He will never be forgotten. HICKS, Donald Allister HICKS, Donald Allister - 81, Beaver Bank. It is with great sorrow that the family of Donald Hicks announce his sudden passing on March 20, 2008. He was the dearly loved husband to Gertrude, sharing 58 years of love and companionship. Donald was predeceased by his parents, Clifford and Stella Hicks. Donald is survived by his sister, Carol (Hicks) Hopgood, and brothers, Cecil, John and Robert "Bob". He will be sadly missed by his son, Ronald (Charlene), Miramichi, N.B.; Jerry (Lorelei), Grande Prairie, Alta.; Jennifer, Calgary Alta., and Stewart (Tammie), Beaver Bank. Don was the devoted grandfather to 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Donald was a dedicated Witness of Jehovah since 1942, as such he took seriously God's command to teach Bible truths and enjoyed doing so. Of all the gifts that Don left his children, his example of love and devotion to Bible principles is the legacy he will be most remembered and appreciated for.
