YOUNG, Florida Passed away after a short illness on Sunday, March 9th, 2008 at the Bonnechere Manor at the age of 91. Pre-deceased by her husband John. Loving mother of George (Ella) and Grace (the late Murray) Yantha. Proud grandmother of Laurie Gauvreau (Jerry deBoer), Robert Yantha, Craig (Gilindy) Young, Rebecca (Howard) Mende and Ruth Young (Greg Mulligan). Dear great-grandmother of Jacqueline Gauvreau, Jonathan Mende, O'Sean Young and Jeremy deBoer. She will be missed by her brother and sisters. Florida was very active in the community especially the Glasgow Women's Institute and the Glasgow United Church. She was also quite involved with the Waba Cottage Museum and a long time exhibitor at the Renfrew Fair. The family would like to thank the staff at Quail Creek Retirement Home for their excellent care of Florida and the staff at Bonnechere Manor for their understanding and compassionate care. BIRO, Bill. Passed away on March 7, 2008 in Tel-Aviv at eighty-seven years of age. He will be sadly missed by wife Hani, daughter Susanne Biro Backman, Avrum Backman and granddaughters Heather and Barbara Backman. Predeceased by first wife Helen Schlesinger. Also survived by brother-in-law Dr. Andrew Gonda and nephew Peter Gonda who will greatly miss him for his unabashedly good humour. HAMMOND, Richard Callan. Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. Born August 27, 1917 in St. Lambert, Quebec, passed away March 9, 2008 in the Veteran's Unit of the Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, N.S. Survived by son, Donald (Janet) Calhoun, Bridgewater, and granddaughters, Julie, Bridgewater and Holly, Halifax; daughter, Donna Hammond (James Secord), Hanwell, N.B.; also survived by brother, Allan Hammond (Betty), Vancouver, B.C.; numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Frederick Peter Hammond and Mary Ann Elizabeth Hammond and brothers, Frederick, Edwin, Walter and Ralph. Also predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie Gates Hammond. Richard served overseas with the Royal Canadian Signal Corps and was a long time employee of Bell Canada. He was largely a self-educated man; an avid reader who enjoyed anything from physics and astronomy to philosophy and comparative religions. He had a passion for music particularly Verdi and Bellini operas and male Welsh choirs. He will be remembered for his intellect, his kindness, his passion for family and his very dry wit. MONK, Doreen (nee Banfield). At the Royal Victoria Hospital, on March 10, 2008 at the age of eighty-five. Beloved wife of the late Maurice Monk. Born in Cardigan, she was the daughter of Mildred (MacSwain) and the late Cyrus Dockerty. Prior to her death Jean was a registered dietitian, who was employed as a diabetes educator in Prince County. ROSS, Anne Louise (MacCallum) On Friday, March 7, 2008, Anne Louise (MacCallum) Ross, a devoted and beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed into eternal rest in her 81st year. She was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, Reg, in 1984. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Karen Ross, Susan Doiron (Rick), and Margaret Ross and daughter-in-law, Carol Stairs (Darrell); her grandchildren Peter Ross (Emily), Jason Ross (Emily) and Michelle Hixson (Brent), Kerry, Saundra, Kendra, and Tracey Clow, Amanda Doiron, Nicholas, Andrew, Leslie and Matthew Bakker; and great-grandchildren Tovah and Ethan Ross, Haven Chandler and Mason Bakker; her sisters Jennie Ling, Susan MacCallum, Betty Cruwys (Stan), and Lois Murphy (Leon), sisters-in-law, Helen and Marie MacCallum, and brother-in-law, Ron MacLean, and numerous nieces and nephews and friends. CONRAD, Diane Louise - Chester, died suddenly on March 8, 2008. She was a daughter of the late Constance Stevens and Clifford Cox. She was also predeceased by her husband, Earl; infant twins, Bessie and Frank; and special friend, John Cody. Diane is survived by her daughter, Jill and her husband Paul Fewer, Timberlea; son, Barry and his wife Cherylann, Ottawa, Ont.; her brother, Clifford Jr. and his wife, Marilyn, Windsor Road; her beloved grandchildren, Samantha and Nicholas Fewer, Sarah and Rebecca Conrad. Diane was a lifelong parishioner of St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Chester; a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 44, and the Chester Golf and Curling Club. She lived a very active life, was an avid golfer and curler, and enjoyed working with the Special Olympics athletes. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and will be sadly missed. GLODE, Mary May - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing our our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, on March 9, 2008, in Glades Lodge. Born on May 24, 1915, in Bear River, Mary was raised by her late grandparents, Joanne and John Paul. She spent much of her childhood being taught the art of basket making. While accompanying her grandmother, who was the midwife until the 1930s, she welcomed life into the world. She was an accomplished seamstress, and loved to knit, crochet, bake play bingo, and travel. Mary was a member of St. Paul's Church, the St. Paul's Women's Association, and the St. John Ambulance Association. Mary's life was centred around her strong belief in God, and her family. She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Joan Glode (Bob) Backen, Anne Neil, and Mary LeRue (Jay Gordon); grandchildren, Jerry LeRue (Holly Moser), Terry LeRue (Lisa King), and Darcy Dearman (Brandon); great-grandchildren, Ethan LeRue, Jonah Dearman, Ashley LeRue; niece, Virginia Copping (Newton). Mary was predeceased by her husband, Frank, in January 1950; and her son, Kenneth, in January 2003. Heartfelt thanks to Gladys Feener and Diana Weaver for their care, concern and friendship over the past three years, she appreciated and cared about you. NICKERSON, Annie Mae - 83, Wood's Harbour, went home to be with her Jesus on Saturday, March 8, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Health Centre, after a courageous battle with pain. Born in Clark's Harbour in 1925, she was the third daughter of the late Daisy and Levi Hopkins. She loved the outdoors, took special pride in her flowers and helping in her husband's garden. Most important in her life next to her family, was her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Her faith shone through even during the hard times. Annie is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, Shirley; daughters, Shirley Ann (Joseph) Larkin, Shag Harbour; Judith (Francis) Atkinson, Centreville; Emily (Michael) Crowell, Shag Harbour; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; brother, Roy (Thelma) Hopkins, Framingham, Mass.; sisters, Marguerite Badger, West Roxbury, Mass.; Helen Smith, Barrington Passage; Nancy (Murray) Ward, Gaspereau Forks, N.B.; sisters-in-law, Nita Lowe, Clark's Harbour; Mary Lee (Arthur) Smith, Burnaby, B.C. VAN DEN HOF, Bernardus Michiel "Ben" - 86, Milford, passed away very peacefully with his family around him March 9, 2008, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born, June 9, 1921, he was a son of the late Michiel Cornelis van den Hof and Wilhelmina Petronella van den Hof (Schok). He grew up on a dairy and fruit farm in Heteren, The Netherlands. He was an avid soccer fan and player. In Holland after the war he delivered milk. Immigrated to Canada with his wife in 1953 through Pier 21. He resided for six years in Annapolis Valley and then moved to Milford in 1959 to purchase a dairy farm. His biggest passion was gardening, both flowers and vegetables, and also traveling. Ben was a member and past elder of the Milford Lantz United Church. He was a member of senior bowling. His grandchildren were very important to him. He is survived by his wife, Geertje van den Hof (Beukema); sons, Michiel (Cathy MacDougall) van den Hof, Halifax; John (Patty) van den Hof, Milford; daughter, Erie (Rod) Ogden, Lorneville; grandchildren, Alec, Ryan, Corey, Nico, Megan, Garrett, Alyssa, Anneke, and Colin; brothers, Michiel van den Hof, Berwick; Nico (Jo) van den Hof, Holland; sisters, Do Schuitemaker, Holland; Riet (Wim) te Lindert, Holland; many nieces and nephews. GADOMSKI, Jan In Ottawa on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the age of 87, after a short battle with cancer. Survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Anna Yvonne (nee Misztela); his 3 daughters Halina (Denis), Yolande (Rudi) and Basia (Andy); 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a sister, Wiktoria, as well as extended family in Canada, the U.S. and Poland. Born in Radomysl Wielki, Poland on October 17, 1920, Jan was the son of Stefan and Antonina (nee Trojan). During World War ll, he served with the Polish Army and Allied Forces as an officer in radar operations. After the war, he earned his Master's Degree in Electronic Engineering and, in 1952, moved to Canada with his bride. He worked for Northern Electric, Bell Northern Research and Nortel throughout his career in Montreal and Ottawa. The family especially wishes to thank the staff of Elisabeth Bruyere Palliative Care Unit for their tenderness. MacLEOD, Melissa (1928-2008) - Peacefully on Sunday March 9, 2008 at Hospice Niagara in St. Catharines at the age 79. She is survived by and will be deeply missed by her husband of 55 years Gordon MacLeod, her daughter and son-in- law Rhonda and Paul Coleman, her son and daughter-in-law Douglas MacLeod and Joan Gomes, her daughter Nance MacLeod, grandchildren April Coleman, Cassie and Jim MacIntyre and great grandchildren Austin Coleman and Jimmy MacIntyre, Rebekah Coleman and Meaghan Morris. She will be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews. Letizia was born in Castropignano, Italy and came to Welland in 1952. Over the next 50 years Letizia through her generous actions became a prominent and beloved figure in the Italian community. For over 25 years Letizia and her husband successfully owned and operated Scapillati's Grocery where the doors were always open and no one in need was turned away. She also dedicated a lifetime of service to Club Castropignano, taking on leadership roles in the Ladies Auxiliary, Coro Folcloristico Castropignano and of course in the kitchen where she worked tirelessly until her retirement at the age of 78 in 2005. HIGGINS, Harold George Watson - 89, High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2008, in High Crest. Born in East Earltown, Colchester Co., on October 6, 1918, he was a son of the late Edward and Annie (Watson) Higgins. Harold started his working career with his father in the lumber business, later joining the North Nova Scotia Highlanders as a soldier serving in England during the Second World War and eventually becoming a member of the Provost Corps, Military Police. After the war he returned to the family farm working alongside his father and as a carpenter worked with his brother in the construction business. During his younger years, he was the Light Heavy Weight Boxing Champion of Nova Scotia. He was lay reader at the United Church in Trenton, Jolicure/Point de Bute, N.B., and Merigomish; was ordained on June 6, 1962, as a United Church Minister where he held charges at Point de Bute, N.B., and Southampton and was Padre of five organizations. He also worked as a Resource Development Officer for the Nova Scotia Government, was member of the Militia retiring with the rank of Major and worked many years in the blueberry industry. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Philae Shriners Club of Amherst, the Amherst Legion and a recipient of the Queens Jubilee Medal. Left to mourn are his loving wife, the former Sophia Selena Quinton; sons, Robert (Wendy) Higgins, Victoria B.C., and Harold Jr. (Wilma) Higgins, Marion Bridge, Cape Breton; daughter, Heather Higgins, Halifax; brothers, Borden (Tina) Higgins, Ormond Beach, Florida; Curtis (Geraldine) Higgins, Burlington, Ont.; sisters, Rebecca (Ernest) Hiscott, Fredericton, N.B.; Eyleen MacLeod, Truro, and Jenny "Jaye" Higgins, Halifax; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Kathlene McCara; siblings, Frances, Charles, Robert, Dorothy, and Wilena. Visitation to be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, in A.H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in St. Andrews Wesley United Church, Springhill, with Rev. David Lloyd-Pearce officiating. CHIASSON, Charles Joseph "Charlie" - 50, Petit Ètang, died suddenly on March 8, 2008, at home. Born in Chéticamp on April 3, 1957, he was the beloved son of the late Thaddéo and Marie (Chiasson) Chiasson, Petit Ètang. Charlie was a member of St. Peter's Church, Chéticamp, and was employed by Pleasant Bay Fisheries. Charlie loved the outdoors, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He would often be found travelling the trails around his home, either on foot or on his four-wheeler. He would always be up for a good night of playing cards. Charlie was an avid and lifelong fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and remained a dedicated supporter of the team in good seasons and bad. While Charlie was a quiet man, the impact he has left on those who knew him is monumental. He had a heart of gold, and was always helping others, whether asked, or simply because he knew on his own that they could use a helping hand. Countless numbers of people have benefited from his kindness, generosity, and friendship, and his passing leaves a significant void in the lives and hearts of many. To say that he will be greatly missed is an understatement. COLE, George Robert - 57, Mount Uniacke, Hants Co., passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2008, in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born on November 11, 1950, in Halifax, he was the son of the late Russell and Jean (Barnes) Cole. George was employed as an IT Consultant by HRM for the past several years. George's true satisfaction came from his volunteer work - a member of the Naval Reserves, Mount Uniacke Fire Department, manager of various Minor Hockey teams, and lastly as a treasurer of the newly formed Junior "C" Avon River Rats. Many young hockey players were encouraged and supported by George over the years and he was well-liked by players, coaches and parents. George's favourite times were the family vacations spent on Grand Manan where he and Lorna were married and their daughter, Sarah was christened. Sharing this special place with Sarah and Daryl, whom he loved so deeply, was something he looked forward to each and every year. Although his life was too short, he made the most of the years he had. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, the former Lorna Jean Horsman; daughter, Sarah; son, Daryl; sister, Gerri (Doug) Hewitt, Winnipeg; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, John and Violet Cole; maternal grandparents, Ninyan and Stella Barnes. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. today in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King St., Windsor. Précédée par son fils Alain Labonville (1960-1985), elle laisse dans le deuil ses fils : Richard Labonville (Dominique Turpin), Claude Labonville ; ses petits-enfants: Philippe, Jacynthe et François Labonville, son ex-conjoint Jean-Paul, sa mère naturelle Catherine Grandbois et ses sœurs Carmen Prince (Marcel) et Lucille Legault (Laurent) ainsi que de nombreux autres parents et amis.
