FRANCIS, Lee Milton 1914 - 2008 After a short illness, Lee passed away in his sleep on March 3, 2008 at 93 years of age. Lee was born on his parents' homestead and lived there until they relocated to a larger farm south of it. In 1927, the family moved to his mother's home area of Niagara Falls, ON. Lee grew up and completed his schooling there. Returning with his family in 1931, he joined the U.F.A. but eventually took technical training at N.A.I.T. In 1935, he purchased the Majorville store/post office, and ran it for over thirty years. During that time, he also repaired TVs and radios and, for a short period, he ran a small daily bus line from Majorville to Calgary (serving several small communities along the way). He built a brand new store in 1958. He retired from running it in 1966 and moved to his farm east of Milo. There he cultivated his love of gardening, growing a large garden and many fruit trees. His efforts won him numerous prizes at the local fair for many years. Lee also served for several years on the Milo United Church board. In 1986, he moved back to the Majorville store, there continuing his horticultural interests. When his sight and health became poor he moved briefly to Peter Dawson Lodge in Vulcan, before settling into the Country House Seniors Care Home in Gleichen. Lee was predeceased by his brother Cecil (1921), father William (1960), mother Ella (1964) and brother William (2000). He leaves behind a sister-in-law, Lorna and her two sons Tim and Dan, as well as numerous cousins. A Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow in the Garden of Devotion, Mountain View Memorial Gardens. LAGIMODIERE, Robert (Bob) April 20, 1956 - March 5, 2008 It is with great sadness his wife Lynette and daughter Lindsay announce the passing of Bob of Calgary. He fought a hard battle with lung cancer and passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at the age of 51 years. Bob will be remembered by his father Henry; brother Larry; and sisters Linda, Kim, Tracey and Darcey of Winnipeg; mother-in-law Evelyn; brothers-in-law Glen and Neil (Kelly); sisters-in-law Dianne (Guy) and Cindy. He was predeceased by his mother Verda and brothers-in-law, Ray and Gary. Bob was born and raised in Winnipeg where he and Lynette first met. He worked for the City of Winnipeg for twenty years and then moved to Calgary to start a new life as a husband, father and Production Accountant in the oil and gas industry. Bob will be greatly missed by family, friends and co-workers. He made a huge impact on anyone who met him with his humour, movie career, writing, his love of golf, especially his hole-in-one, and the Calgary Flames. We take comfort in knowing that Verda, his mom, and one of his best friends, Tim, will welcome him with open arms and will look after him for us. I thank him for so many things, for always making our house so much fun, talking me into getting our dog Nikki, always agreeing with my decisions whether they were right or wrong and most of all, for giving me Lindsay. PONKA,Melvin 2008-03-07 Melvin Theodore Philip (Ted) Ted Ponka, 62, passed away at his home on Thursday, March 6, 2008, with his family by his side. Ted was born on November 19, 1945, in Fort William. He was raised in Pearson Township and attended school in South Gillies. Ted completed trade school in Sault Ste. Marie and became a mechanic. He was a skilled improviser, fixer and builder of things. Ted was a proud family man with a big heart. He had a humble disposition and a knack for making others comfortable in his presence. He was a kind person, non-judgmental, and always found humour in life‘s situations. Whether he was grilling dinner or on a trip to Las Vegas, he embraced life wholeheartedly, everything was an adventure to him. He was a beautiful person who could lift you with just a smile and he will be terribly missed. Ted worked hard all of his life and always looked after his family. He worked for 37 years at CC Poulin as a heavy equipment mechanic where he had many good friends. He was an advocate for the workers. Ted enjoyed his time out in the country, going for sauna, fishing, camping, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He looked forward to Thursday night supper and cribbage with his daughter-in-law. Ted took great pride in his Finn heritage and participated in many Finnish cultural events in Thunder Bay. Ted is survived by his children, Philip Ponka (Beth), Ken Ponka, and Lydia Sousa (Steve), his grandchildren Andrew, Matthew, Jasmine, Kenneth, Zacharius, and Kathryn, and the mother of his children, Barbara. He is also survived by his siblings Aimo, Gerttu, Sonja, Corrine, and Violet, his nieces Karen and Linda, who were like sisters to him, along with numerous other relatives. He was predeceased by his father Mattias, mother Lyydia, sister Elizabeth in infancy, brothers Richard and Arthur, and sister Edna. Cremation has been completed. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Stephen‘s Anglican Church, 494 Leslie Street with the Reverend Ed Swayze officiating. Memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen‘s Anglican Church or a charity of your choice. A tree will be planted in memory of Melvin Ponka in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 28, 2009.

SHARP, Margaret “Maggie“ (nee Menard ) (McFarlane) - In loving memory of Margaret “Maggie“ (nee Menard) (McFarlane) Sharp, 91st year, who passed away peacefully at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph's Health Centre. Maggie was born in Eganville, she was a devout Roman Catholic and a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish as well as a 50 year member of the CWL. She played cards for many years and now can rejoin her card partners in a heavenly home. Maggie was an ardent shopper, she enjoyed cooking and baking. She was devoted to her family and loved to spend time with them. Beloved wife of Reginald McFarlane and Joseph “Joe“ Sharp both predeceased. Margaret Foat died at the Temiskaming Lodge in Haileybury on March 2, 2008 at the age of 76. She was predeceased by her husband Raymond Foat and her parents Russell and Maude Pirie. LINDEMAN, James "Bud" 2008-03-07 January 17, 1922 - March 4, 2008 James "Bud" Lindeman, of 405 Elliot Street, died peacefully at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. He is survived by his loving wife Frances, brother Bob (Miranda), sisters Arleen Furgala (Mike) of Toronto, and Mary Claire Stirrett; his daughter Janet Trutenko (Wally), son Doug (Carlana); grandchildren Stephen Trutenko (Delaine) of Calgary, Christopher Trutenko, Laura Keen (Dave) of Winnipeg, Joanna and Clifford Lindeman; five great-grandchildren: Violet, Kaius, Madison and Jaida Trutenko, and Sadie Keen; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Clifford and Violet, step-mother Irene, brothers Clifford Junior and Donald, and brother-in-law Roy Stirrett. Bud attended Port Arthur Collegiate Institute. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. During the Second World War, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and flew transport missions to Great Britain and Europe. He remained with the RCAF until the mid-1950s when he returned to Port Arthur to join Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. He retired in 1983 from his position as Superintendent of Pool 4. Lake Nipigon and its many islands were his favourite places. Bud and Fran enjoyed many years at their camp at McDiarmid patrolling the lake in their converted commercial fishing boat. Bud was very active in the Beardmore-Lake Nipigon Watchdog Society, an organization that advocated for the preservation of the lake. A private service will be held. BAY, Mary Alice 2008-03-07 On Monday March 3, 2008 at the La Verendrye Hospital, Fort Frances, Ont, Mary Alice Bay (nee Blackie) of Rainy River, Ont formerly of Port Arthur, Ont (Thunder Bay) passed away at the age of 92. Mary was born in Kenora, Ont on June 1, 1915. She resided in Rainy River, for forty plus years. Predeceased by her parents Frederick and Pricilla Blackie, husband Henrik Bay, and good friend and companion Wilbert Runke, one son David, sister Eleanor Christensen, brothers, Russell and George Blackie. Mary is survived one daughter Diane (Mike) Paziuk, of Thunder Bay, Ont, sister Ruth Chapman, two grandchildren, and two great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. As per Mary‘s wishes cremation has taken place with a celebration of her life to be held at a later date. If desired memorial donations may be made to your charity of choice.

BURTON, Margaret Freda "Dewey" - 76, Tidal View Manor, formerly of 11 Carleton St., Yarmouth, passed away March 6, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Margaret (MacGrath) Snowdon. Dewey worked as an RN at Yarmouth Regional Hospital for 33 years. She loved visits from her family and getting together for meals. Her dry sense of humour brought many smiles. She is survived by daughters, Janice (Bruce) LeBlanc, Wedgeport; Norma (Lloyd) Marsden, Yarmouth; Peggy (Dale) Royal Lake George; sons, Scott (Meredith Greene), Yarmouth; Mark (Myrtle) Bridgewater and Ellen Burton; grandchildren, Jill, Megan, Laura, Erin, Colin, Alex, David, Sarah, Stephanie, and Glenna; great-granddaughter, Madison. DUBÈ, Leopold "Paul" - 77, Halifax, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 5, 2008, in Glades Lodge. Born in St. Paul de la Croix, Que., on November 9, 1930, he was the son of the late Ernest and Alphonsine Dubé. Paul and his family moved to Halifax in his early years and he was employed in the family business for many years. Paul had a strong work ethic and completed any task to the best of his ability. Also, he will be remembered for his compassion and keen sense of humour. He is survived by sisters, Marieanne (René) Ouellette, Halifax, and Theresa O'Hara, Halifax. He is fondly remembered by many loving nieces and nephews. His family would like to express a very special note of gratitude to the compassionate staff of Glades Lodge for their kindness, support and care to Paul. DUHME, Walter Christian "Wally" - 79, Lower Sackville, passed away March 5, 2008. It is with great sadness we say goodbye to a loving husband, father and grandfather. Born in Germany and raised in England, he then moved with his family to Canada in 1965. He worked for most of his life at the Bank of Montreal in Toronto, Ont., and Halifax. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 53 years, Maureen Ann; daughter, Karen (Brian); sons, Graham, Martin (Rhonda); grandchildren, Rafer, Laurel, Kaitlyn and Hannah, and stepgrandchildren, Katy and Jason. HATT, Mary Elizabeth "Marie" - 83, Beech Hill, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 29, 2008, in Kindersley Healthcare, Kindersley, Sask. Born in Spanish, Ont., on December 27, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Napoleon and Jennie Suave. She was a loving wife of the late Bruce Myles Hatt; common-law wife to the late Floyd Taylor, and a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Marie was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Royal Canadian Legion, all in Chester. MacPHERSON (Walker), Margaret "Margie" - Crescent Street, Sydney, formerly of Stuart Street, died peacefully at home, at the age of 80 years, on Wednesday, March 5, 2008. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Archie and Christina (Campbell) Walker (Sydney). Margie was married for 53 years to her best friend and soul mate, Reid, who predeceased her in 2003. She graduated from Holy Angels High School and Nova Scotia Teacher's College, and taught elementary school in Cape Breton County for more than 20 years. The majority of those years were at Coxheath Elementary School. Margie is survived by sons, David (Farris), Lower Sackville; Gary (Deb), Olympia, Wash.; grandchildren, Kim, Chris (Crystal), Patrick, Ashley, George, all of Halifax, and Shawn, Calgary; great-grandchildren, Lilly and Emily, Halifax, and her sister, Mary (Carl) Saunders, Sydney. MORRIS, Ruth R. - 77, Advocate Harbour, Cumberland Co., passed away Thursday, March 6, 2008, in South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. Born in Toronto, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Mabel (Dale) Hewlett. Ruth was employed with Eatons in Toronto for 13 years and later as a payroll accountant with General Motors for 28 years. She was a member of the Advocate Baptist Church where she served as treasurer, was a member of the choir, and assisted with the Bible and Sunday schools. PIERCE (Weston), Nina Jean - Mineville. Jean passed away peacefully on March 4, 2008, in Melville Lodge Nursing Home, Halifax. Nina Jean Weston was born in Halifax on July 22 1924, the second youngest in a family of 10 children. Beloved wife of Robert Blenis Pierce, Jean and Bob lived for much of their married life in Scarborough, Ont., where they raised their three children and were active members of Ferndale Baptist Church. Upon retiring, they moved to Hudson, Fla., and then finally back to Nova Scotia in 1995. Jean is survived by her husband, Robert "Bob"; sons, Robert Jr., Halifax; Ron and wife Kathy, Porters Lake; sisters, Gladys, Veryl, and Margaret; grandchildren, Jackie Curren (Alan), Cameron (Kathryn) and Mark Pierce (Shelly), all of Halifax; Stephen and David (Alexandra) Weber, and Thomas Wehrmeyer, all of Florida; along with great-grandchildren, Robbie and Alexandra Curren and William Pierce, all of Halifax. She was predeceased by her dear daughter, JoAnne (Florida); parents, Everett and Nina (Harpell) Weston; brothers, Frank in infancy, and Everett; sisters, Beatrice, Edith, Dorothy, and Kathleen. REID, Janet Doris - 74, Halifax, passed away at home on March 6, 2008. She was a daughter of the late Edmund and Edythe (Burton) Dexter. Janet was a graduate of Dalhousie and Mount Allison universities. She was an avid curler at the Halifax Curling Club, as well as an enthusiastic golfer belonging to the Ashburn Golf Club. She was a lifelong member of Bethany United Church and was very active with the UCW and other church activities. She was also active in the Halifax Infirmary auxiliary for many years and involved in many other organizations. Janet was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother. Janet is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Earle Reid; sons, David, Douglas (Sharon), Gregory, all of Halifax; sister, Donna Dexter, Halifax; grandchildren, Nicol, Alex, Jonathan, Julianne, Liam, Keegan, Benjamin.
