GOWDY, Irene. Mrs. Irene Florence Gowdy, age ninety-three, passed away peacefully at Greenwood Court, Stratford on Monday, February 25, 2008. She was born in Chatham, New Brunswick. Daughter of the late David and Florence Still. Irene was active most of her life in girl guiding, nursing and the CNIB. She was a member of the Ontario Street Baptist Church, Stratford. Predeceased by her husband William K. Gowdy in 1982, by a daughter and son-in-law Pam and Alex L'Heureux, by her son David Gowdy and daughter-in-law Brenda Gowdy. Survived by her children Glenna Jenson, Ken Gowdy, Brent Gowdy and wife Betty, Nancy Clifton and husband Arnie, all of Kitchener; daughter-in-law Janet Gowdy, London; forty grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was loved and will be missed by all. Friends and relatives may call at the W.G. SHEWCHUK, Rev. Paul Procopius 2008-02-26 Passed into the waiting hands of the Lord on February 23, 2008 in his 96th year. Predeceased by his parents, Theodore and Ahafia Shewchuk, his brother Michael and sisters Olga and Anne, he will be missed by nieces, Lillian Kooinan (Gerry) and Sonia (Albert) Raynak, grand nieces Louanne Henderson (Paul) and Jennifer Tournour (Vince) and many great grand nieces and nephews in Canada and Ukraine. Father Shewchuk was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Studite Order of Priests and had lived a prayerful life at the Studite Monastery in Woodstock, Ontario since his ordination in 1967. Following his graduation from Fort William Collegiate Institute, he worked on the lakers plying the Great Lakes in the 1930‘s. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. After the war he returned to school and graduated from the Ontario College of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto. He returned to Fort William and ran Shewchuk Pharmacy on Simpson Street during the 1950‘s. In 1960, he joined the Studite Fathers and went to Rome to study for the priesthood. A memorable moment during his studies was a personal audience with Pope Paul VI with his Studite brethren. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Transfiguration on Friday, February 29, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. with interment to follow. Visitation will take place at the Blake Funeral Chapel, Thursday, February 28, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with Panachyda at 7:00 p.m. Welcome home good and faithful servant. MITCHELL, Janet 2008-02-26 Mrs. Janet Mitchell, age 68 years, resident of Thunder Bay, ON passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Born on October 16th, 1939 in Dumbarton, Scotland. Janet immigrated to Canada with her family in 1965. She spent her lifetime as a loving and caring wife and mom raising her family. She will be sadly missed and never forgotten. No one will ever love us like she did. Janet is survived by her loving and caring husband of 50 years John Mitchell; daughters Catherine Mitchell-Bosson and her daughter Rebecca, Laraine (Dave) Albrecht and their children Keith Hommy, Jesse and Ashna, Angela (Russell) MacLeod and their children Colin and Bailey, Debbie (Shane) Pike and children Nicole and Brandon, Colleen (Grant) Ditmars and children Travis and Curtis; sons William (Cheryl) Mitchell and Gary Mitchell and his children Karly, Kaitlyn, Drew, Kadee and Kenzie. She is also survived by her sister Angela and her sons Bradley and Kyle, and her brother Charles and family. She was predeceased by her mother and father John and Catherine McMillan. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service for family and friends will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, March 1st, 2008 at Lakeview Presbyterian Church with a luncheon to follow. CODY, John George CODY, John George - 66, Chester, died peacefully in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, on February 24, 2008, with his family at his side. He was born December 20, 1941, in Ottawa, Ont., a son of the late Patrick Leo and Elizabeth (O'Neill) Cody. John was a member of the R.C.M.P. for 30 years. Serving in Halifax, Windsor, Digby, Sackville, Yarmouth, Chester, Lunenburg, and the training division, he retired in 1992 at the rank of Sergent. John leaves behind children, daughter, Lisa Cody (Darren Leary), Falmouth; son, Sean, Halifax; daughter, Elizabeth, St. John's, N.L.; grandson, Christopher Leary, Falmouth; and stepson, Mike Conklin, Bridgewater. Raised in Brockville, Ont., John was part of a large and loving family. He was predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law, Mel Boulton. Family was important to John but he was also very actively involved in his community. He was Right Worshipful Brother and Past Master of Unity Masonic Lodge in Lunenburg, and served as Director of Ceremonies for Clarke Lodge in Chester. John also served as Deputy Grand Master for Lunenburg/Queens counties in 2003-2004 and was a member of the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Shriners, Royal Canadian Legion and Chester/Lunenburg Curling Club. He coached the Special Olympic Curling Team. Visitation will be held today from 7-8:30 p.m. in Davis Funeral Home, Chester, including a Royal Canadian Legion service, a Masonic service and an Order of the Eastern Star service. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 27, at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church, Hubbards, Father Chinedu Chukwu officiating, followed by a reception at the Chester Branch Royal Canadian Legion. LAPP, John Peter - It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to a beloved husband, father and grandfather. John went to be with the Lord on February 23, 2008, in his 76th year. He leaves to mourn, his wife Doris (Neff), his daughters Nancy (Kevin) Rafferty of Fort Erie, Ruth Lapp of Nova Scotia, Miriam Lapp (Guy Trepanier) of Ottawa, son Peter (Terry) Lapp and Ian Archer of Niagara Falls who was much a part of the Lapp Family. He had many interests including woodworking, gardening, walking, biking and skiing. He was a volunteer at local nursing homes where he played his harmonica. His first love was his children and his family. He was a gentle, loving man and will be greatly missed by all that knew him. EAGLES, BASIL A. - Basil A. Eagles, 97, of Salisbury passed away at the Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home on February 25th, 2008. Born in Monteagle, he was the oldest child of the late Edgar and Ella (Taylor) Eagles. Basil taught at country schools at Gallagher Ridge, Lutes Mountain, Upper Rockport, Mountain Road School and McKee's Mills. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant with the Field Artillery Regiment in England. After serving overseas, Basil worked for the Canadian National Railway, and retired as a Brakeman. Following his retirement, he worked for the Canadian Corps Commissionaires, receiving the 10 Year Long Service Medal. He was a member of the Second North River Baptist Church and he was a 60-Year member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Salisbury Branch 31. Throughout his life, Basil pursued a variety of interests. For many years, he raised goats and operated greenhouses at his home on the Blakney Road in Salisbury. An avid reader, his collection of books and maps reflected his love of learning and special interest in genealogy. He had a passion for knitting and his richly patterned socks, gloves and mittens are immediately recognizable to everyone who has the pleasure of wearing them. He is survived by one son, Bill Eagles (Patricia) of New Denmark; six daughters, Doreen Burnham (Fenwick) of Upper Coverdale, Marilyn Bishop (Mel) of Salisbury, Carolyn Prentice (Terry) of Santa Teresa, New Mexico, USA, Isabel Eagles of Moncton, Barbara Robb of Moncton, and Georgia Dent (Daniel) of Edmonton, Alberta; sons-in-law, Alex Kerr and Sherman Hicks; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Steves of Charlottetown; brothers, Gordon Eagles (Hazel) of Riverglade, Ernie Eagles (Gerry) of Sussex; sisters-in-law, Beulah Eagles of Kelowna, Annie Eagles of Thunder Bay; Marlene Gillcash of Lutes Mountain, Thelma Steeves (Aulden) of Moncton, Doris Gillcash of Moncton, and Louise Gillcash of Calgary; brother-in-law, Norman Gillcash (Phyllis) of Lutes Mountain and numerous nieces and nephews.
