POULARD, Joseph 1918 - 2008 Paisiblement, à Laval, le 9 février 2008, à l'âge de 89 ans, est décédé monsieur Joseph Poulard, époux de feu Hélène Gélinas. Il laisse dans le deuil ses neveux et nièces Jean-François, Anne, Mireille, Josée, Danny, Jean-Charles et Anne-Marie, ses petits-neveux et nièces ainsi qu'un bon nombre d'amis. Natif de St-Pierre-et-Miquelon, il a immigré au Canada avec sa famille en 1948. Il a été Président de l'Union Française dans les années 1950 - 1960, infirmier à l'hôpital pour paraplégiques dans sa jeunesse ainsi que Caporal pour l'armée française durant la 2e guerre mondiale. Sharon Elaine Himbury (née Anderson) July 23, 1945 - February 16, 2008 Accomplished Artist and Best Friend “I’ll sing in the sunshine, then I’ll be on my way” The family of Sharon Himbury sadly announce her passing at Henderson Hospital on Saturday, February 16, 2008. She was the beloved wife of James and cherished mother of Ken and his wife Jen Brown, devoted daughter of Charlotte and the late Kenneth Anderson of Goderich, and much loved sister of Patricia (John) and Jane (Rick). Sharon was an “Auntie by love” to Chris Brown and her three children, Rebecca, Emilie and Soloman. Also left to mourn is her beloved dog, Lizzie. Sharon was a devoted member of many organizations including, Joseph Brant Museum, Red Hat Ladies, Probus Women's Club, Woodworkers, Performing Arts Burlington, Dundas Valley Art School, East Plains United Church, Canada Day Committee, as well as her assistance with refugees and newcomers to Canada. “Mrs. H.” shared her joy of the arts with children of all ages at Funcamp at Farandole Farms. CULLEY, Raymond Willard Raymond Willard Culley passed away peacefully at the age of 82 years on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at the Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary. Ray was born on June 27, 1925 in Calgary. He is survived by his wife Phyllis, his children, Colleen Metge (Denis Champagne), Jill Asbell (Bernie) and Brooke Culley (Katherine) and his grandchildren Kate and Emily Asbell and Wednesday and Wyatt Culley. Ray will also be missed by his older sister, Lois Melton (Bill) of Reno, Nevada, his younger brother, Robert Culley (May) of Calgary, his oldest friend and cousin, Bill Cunningham (Norma) of Calgary and cousins Maureen Lamond (Don) of Calgary and Elaine Stolar (Jerry), West Vancouver. He was predeceased by his parents, Belle (nee Dewar) and Willard Culley and one sibling, Donald. Ray was attending Western Canada High when he enlisted to serve in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943. He served as a T/O Signalman on the corvette HMCS Summerside until World War II ended. Ray made fourteen crossings from Newfoundland to Londonderry and back and the experience influenced the subsequent course of his life. His memories of these years are recorded in his book, "His Memories Can Survive" which has been given a place in Canada's War Museum. Following his wartime service, Ray worked as a bookkeeper for a number of firms including GMAC Finance and finished his formal career at Canada Customs and Revenue Agency in Vancouver. Ray continued to work after retirement for Statistics Canada and the Census Bureau. And, his voluntary enlistment in the RCN came full circle at the Naval Museum in Calgary where he could be found touring visitors in recent years. Ray was married to Phyllis on September 8, 1951 in Lethbridge. He and Phyllis lived at various times in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Regina and Lethbridge - the city where they primarily raised their three children. While there, he volunteered for the Sea Cadets as a Second Lieutenant amongst other endeavours that helped the youth of the community. Ray was an avid curler and won his share of men's and mixed bonspiels throughout Southern Alberta and BC. He was a faithful fan of the Calgary Stampeders and the Calgary Flames - much to Vancouver Canuck's fan Phyllis' chagrin. He had a great love of opera, the theatre and classical music throughout his life. Ray's avid interest in movies started when he worked as the Assistant Manager of University Theatre on Bloor Street in Toronto in 1946. He was very proud of his movie extra calls in Vancouver; a glimpse of him can be seen on such TV shows as the X-Files and the movies Happy Gilmour and Stay Tuned. His grandchildren were the delight of Ray's life. It was with great joy that he watched Kate and Emily grow up to be kind, loving, phenomenal women, and with the same joy watch Wednesday and Wyatt excel in their busy young lives. In his final years and despite his failing health, Ray found the energy to go on vacations and cruises, visiting Scotland (think Scotch), France, Argentina, Japan and Hawaii and revisit some of the sites of his wartime experiences in Ireland. In May 2005, he was given the honour of placing the wreath at the mouth of the River Foyle on behalf of Canada's Navy veterans in a ceremony commemorating the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Battle of the Atlantic. A Celebration of Ray's life will be held on Thursday, March 6 at Scarboro United Church, 134 Scarboro Avenue S.W., Calgary at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lung Association of Alberta and NWT or the Diabetes Association (Foothills). The family would like to thank the staff of Rockyview General Hospital for making his last days comfortable and dignified. PORTELANCE, Rene - In loving memory of Rene Portelance. It is with great sorrow that the family announces that Rene at the age of 82 left this world and has gone to receive his heavenly reward on Friday, February 15th, 2008 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital-Laurentian Site surrounded by those he loved and who loved him so much. Born in Field, he moved to Markstay at the age of 20. He retired in 1988 from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board where he was well liked and respected by staff and students. He was ordained a permanent Deacon in November, 1990 by Bishop Plouffe at St. Marc's Church. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, Coniston Council #11255. He enjoyed hockey in his younger years both as a player and coach and in latter years fishing. A devout Roman Catholic he lived Jesus lessons to love His God with his heart, soul and strength and love his neighbour as himself. His ministries included parish liturgies and projects. The light of Rene's life guided many people whether raising money for the tuition of a medical student in Haiti or praying with a friend or neighbour for God's intercession. Rene's priorities were faith, family and friends and now he is a guardian angel in heaven to all he loved and lived with on earth. Beloved husband of 59 years of Viola (McGillis) Portelance. Age 78 years of McConnell Manor and formerly Fourth Street East, Cornwall, Ontario. Beloved wife of the late Romeo Roy. Dear mother of Michel Roy of Whitby, Lise (Mrs. Normand Dostie) of Cornwall and Sylvie (Mrs. James Macallister) of Toronto. Dear sister of Laurier Charlebois Cornwall, Mrs. Estelle Serafin (late Roméo) Vanier, Gisèle (Mrs. Gaston Gaudet), Mrs. Marie-Thérèse Brazeau (late Gérard), and Sister Carmen Charlebois (Soeur du Sacré-Coeur de Jésus) all of Cornwall. Dear sister-in-law of Mrs. Germaine Charlebois and Mrs. Louise Charlebois Vachon of Cornwall. Also survived by nine grandchildren, Dominic, Josée, Adèle, Matthieu, Marie-France, Chantal, Joshua, Christian and Claire and two great-grandchildren, Gabrielle and Jonathan. ANGUS, Margaret B.A., LLD, CM - 1908 - 2008 Passed peacefully on Friday, February 15, 2008, in her 100th year with her family by her side. Born May 23, 1908 in Chinook Montana to parents U.S. Grant Sharp and Cora Krause and two brothers, Admiral U.S. Grant Sharp and Tom Sharp. Predeceased by her husband in 1996, William Angus Ph.D., LLD, Professor Emeritus of Queen's University. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Morgan (Owen) and her son, James Angus, seven grandchildren, David (Linda), Philip (Megan), Allison, Elspeth and Andrew (Daina) Morgan, and Jennifer and Grant Angus, as well as seven great grandchildren. Raised in Fort Benton, Montana, Margaret attended the University of Montana at Missoula where she and married William, a young drama professor. In 1937, they came to Queen's and Margaret fell in love with the history and architecture of Kingston. For 55 years, Margaret (Peg to her friends) researched, lectured and wrote about Kingston history. She spearheaded architectural heritage initiatives, initiated the heritage clothing collection at Agnes Etherington Art Centre and documented local heritage through both factual and dramatic literature. Her most popular work, The Old Stones of Kingston, is just one of several significant publications that documents Kingston's culture, architecture and heritage. She has a close working relationship with institutions in the Kingston region including Queen's University, Agnes Etherington Art Centre, St. Lawrence College and Kingston General Hospital. She was widely recognized and received numerous including the Jaycee Citizen of the Year in 1967, an honorary degree from Queen's University (1973), and an honorary degree from St. Lawrence College (2005). She held leadership positions in many organizations including local, provincial and national heritage societies. In 1992, she was recognized for her significant contributions and outstanding accomplishments by being award the Order of Canada. The family would like to thank the staff of Trillium Centre and St. Lawrence Place for their excellent care during Margaret's last years. The family will receive friends at the ROBERT J. REID & SONS FUNERAL HOME, 309 Johnson Street, (at Barrie Street) on Monday, February 18 from 2-5 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. James Anglican Church, 10 Union Street West, on Tuesday, February 19 at 2:00 p.m. Interment Cataraqui Cemetery. ODNEY, Stephen Hugh September 15, 1927 - February 15, 2008 It is with deep sadness that we say good-bye to Steve - husband, dad, grandpa (Jeremy, Travis, Kate (Tom Juke), Tom, Jordan, Luke), great-grandpa (Fierrya, Joshua and Zachary), adopted Dad to Chema and Oralia and their family in Mexico, and brother to Oscar (Yvonne) and Carl (Ruth) - after a hellish battle with cancer. At no time, however, did the battle diminish our memory of who he truly was and what he meant to each of us. Born (1927) and raised in the heartland of Southern Alberta, Steve discovered, and excelled in, the game of fastball, playing throughout Alberta and the Western US with the Granum White Sox and Calgary Doodlebugs. His power at the plate and precision in left field earned him a position of honour in the Lethbridge Sport Hall of Fame (1988) of which he was immensely proud. Married to his beloved Shirley in Calgary in 1954, a quick succession of kids (Jody (Ian) Sanderson, Oakville, ON, Blair (Sheila) Odney, Vernon, BC and Pam (Ray) Graham, Bassano, AB) and a bad knee quickly put an end to his semi-pro career, but Steve turned the same passion toward his working career. Opportunity and natural curiosity took the family from Calgary, to Edmonton, to Moncton, NB, Vancouver, BC and finally back to the prairies in 1969, where Steve and Shirley have been since. Steve worked in the oil and automotive industries for over thirty years, before turning his abilities to commercial real estate in the 1980's when Calgary took off. Hungry for learning, Steve added Dale Carnegie Training and business principles from the Alexander Hamilton Institute at a young age. Where he had the time for self-improvement between being on the road, keeping a cottage in Shediac and "rassling" with three young kids is a mystery. Steve's most resounding achievement was in the area of managing people. Creative, disciplined and with a sense of the absurd, he knew how to render the best from, and for, his employees. He was, before it became the buzzword of the millennium, a true mentor - he challenged, he encouraged and he never gave up. In retirement, Steve was thrilled to have volunteered for the 1988 Olympic Games. He loved his grandkids, traveled, spent the winters in Arizona and Mazatlan (where he taught English to Grade 3 students), and read New York bestsellers with a vengeance. He loved steak, model cars, reruns of Columbo, but his delight was golf. He was never happier than being at Confederation Golf Course - playing or marshalling - he was a student of the game. Of all that meant everything to him, there is no question that his crowning glory was his family, the diamond being Shirley. He would hear nothing against us, trusted we could do anything and believed in us unequivocally. His love shone through his crazy poems, the projects he built and all the games, concerts, plays, competitions and elections he showed up to. We made him laugh, we made him cry, we made him mad and we made him proud - we were his everything. He always said he could never have done it without Shirley - he was right. He had one favourite song, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, from the Wizard of Oz. "You're no longer earthbound, Dad - you're now somewhere over the rainbow too. We love you and we'll miss you." The family wishes to thank all staff in Units 72 and 47 at Foothills Hospital and all the wonderful and compassionate staff at Agape Hospice. FORTIN, Louis Joseph 1920 - 2008 Dans la sérénité, au CHUS Fleurimont, le 12 février 2008, à l'âge de 87 ans, est décédé le Dr Louis Joseph Fortin, époux en premières noces de feu Françoise Fortin et en secondes noces de Anne McCormick. Outre son épouse, il laisse dans le deuil ses enfants Marquis (Richard Fontaine), Louis, Brigitte (Donald Caldwell), Bernard (Suzanne Beaudet), Nathalie (Jean Grison). Il était aussi le père de feu Sylvie (Guy Boutin). Il laisse également ses petits-enfants, Sean, Nathan, Simon, Virginie, Corinne, Alexis, Clémence, Gabrielle, Geneviève, David, Bernard, Élisabeth et Charles, ses frères et soeurs, beaux-frères et belles-soeurs, neveux et nièces et autres parents et amis. Il laisse le souvenir d'un médecin de famille légendaire dont la carrière s'est poursuivie durant près de 50 ans. D'abord sur la Côte-Nord, ensuite à Sherbrooke, Lambton et Montréal. Il devenait en 1970 le premier omnipraticien professeur d'une faculté de médecin à l'Université de Sherbrooke et ses étudiants se souviennent encore de son magnétisme et de ses qualités de motivateur. L'Association médicale canadienne reconnaissait en 2002 ses qualités professionnelles en lui décernant le titre de membre émérite et l'Association des médecins de langue française l'avait honoré de même façon en le nommant "médecin de coeur et d'action” en 1991. Il restera présent dans la mémoire de plusieurs estriens qui ont reçu ses bons soins pendant de nombreuses années. Il a été une inspiration pour la nouvelle génération de médecins; il comptait 2 omnipraticiens parmi ses enfants. Une cérémonie privée aura lieu à une date ultérieure pour célébrer sa mémoire et disposer de ses cendres. La famille désire remercier le CLSC Magog, le ministère des Anciens Combattants du Canada, le foyer Connaught Home de North Hatley et le CHUS Fleurimont qui a collaboré à lui offrir des soins dignes de lui. WALTERS, Jo-Anne - Passed away peacefully, with her sister Irene by her side, at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Thursday February 14, 2008 at the age of 52. Beloved daughter of Helen and the late Louis Walters (2006). Dearly loved sister of Pat (Rose Marie) Walters, Irene (Dan) Covelli and Linda (Armand) Walters.
